MO_oNyMan Posted May 11, 2018 Posted May 11, 2018 I don't know, i feel it would cheapen medbay services. Could be a bad thing, could be a good thing as you would be able to get some quick help when medbay is overwhelmed with critical injuries
Ornias Posted May 11, 2018 Posted May 11, 2018 I'm sorry, I'll have to say no. Most of this is stuff that shouldn't be made available to the public, because it will just reinforce the "I CAN TAKE CARE OF MYSELF" mentality, as well as providing ways for your average person to recover from injury without seeking medical attention. Dylovene, Dexalin, Ointment, and Bandages should be provided by medical, because they provide measures to recover from almost all non-surgical, non-virus injuries. It also provides realistic expectation that people will suddenly know exactly how to bandage grevious wounds, exactly how much dylovene to take, exactly how to apply burn ointment. Unless you can provide a reason why greater crew autonomy to heal themselves without interaction or cost to themselves (because money isn't a cost currently, nobodys going to say "I need to save $20 so I'm not going to buy this pill to stop this grevious burn") is advantageous to roleplay, I can't support this.
Bauser Posted May 11, 2018 Posted May 11, 2018 >Allowing people to purchase their own soap You absolute madman In seriousness, I'm softly opposed to this suggestion for the same reasons as Ornias. While I would probably enjoy the possibility to buy by own first aid stuff in a pinch, there's no doubt that it would take away from the medical bay's responsibilities a bit... And I think they deserve to get as much traffic as possible. I mean, you can already just walk down to medbay and ask for almost any of these things. It's not a laborious process. If you're persuasive, you don't even need to be hurt yet. I only see this addition taking away some crew interactions and allowing people to be more gung-ho about their health and safety than they already are (and I am categorically opposed to suggestions that make people feel safer in-character simply because I feel they already act too cavalier). A Dexalin autoinhaler also sounds like a (situationally) pretty powerful thing for just anybody to be able to get their hands on at the drop of a hat - and we know the price tag isn't going to stop anybody. I make the acute suggestion that it would exist basically for powergaming. In total, it seems to me that this is a fine feel-good/quality-of-life suggestion, but that it would ultimately detract from the quality of play.
LanceLynxx Posted May 11, 2018 Posted May 11, 2018 Idea is interesting, I would support this. But remove more powerful things. Autoinhalers, dylovene, stimpacks. these are medical supplies, shouldn't be available without doctor's orders. Ointment sounds something would realistically buy from a vendor though, so I'd keep that. everything else, is fine.
Asheram Posted May 11, 2018 Posted May 11, 2018 On the fence by this idea. I'd like to make a counter suggestion with adding more "Emergency medical supplies" lockers with inaprovaline, lesser dexaline pills, and bandages. To keep a patient alive until the EMT can arrive on location.
Doxxmedearly Posted May 11, 2018 Posted May 11, 2018 I like the idea, but agree with Lynxx. Also it wouldn't be bad to add sterile masks to the stock, IMO, unless there's something powerful there that I'm not aware of. Gloves, too, maybe?
zyymurgy Posted May 11, 2018 Posted May 11, 2018 In the same way that food vending machines lessen the need for the kitchen, this would lessen the need for medbay. -1 from me personally (and I wish the food vendors were out too so I am clearly biased). However... I do like the idea. So maybe put *one* in the medbay lobby in the event that there's no doc onboard?
Bauser Posted May 11, 2018 Posted May 11, 2018 In line with the above, before someone claims zyymurgy's observation (the existence of food vending machines) is evidence that medical vending machines would be appropriate: Food vending machines are a necessity because the kitchen isn't always staffed and hunger is inevitable. You can only have two chefs and if neither of them is available to fix your debuff, you'd be S.O.L.. In contrast, medical has half a dozen jobs and probably twice that many slots - any of which is perfectly capable of grabbing you a Band-Aid in the five seconds it takes you to text them and walk to the place. And that's if you get hurt at all; wounds are avoidable in a way that getting hungry is not. Therefore, the presence of food vending machines does not evidence the suitability of medical vending machines. Just to nip that in the bud.
BurgerBB Posted May 11, 2018 Author Posted May 11, 2018 Then perhaps I could make it so that the vending machines only spawn when there is less than 4 medical on the shift. If there are more than 4 medical, then the vending machine will be replaced with something else.
Scheveningen Posted May 14, 2018 Posted May 14, 2018 Wouldn't they still be on the station as soon as the department begins to fill up? It would be better if they were flavorized as 'hygiene vending machines' or something that sells fluff items. Paracetamol is a strong painkiller, btw, it's good enough to shrug off the pain of an embedded bullet. Tramadol is weaker.
