  1. I'm interested in part of this suggestion, specifically this - Mechanical degradation after a long time running, or faulty body parts hindering movement in one way or another seems very possible especially in a working environment like the Aurora. Being slowed down, or having occasional messages telling you about faulty servos/hydraulics/joints/etc would add on to role play and help mechanically as well. For station-bounds, this seems a bit redundant considering a small amount of damage has a chance to affect a critical component anyway. However, the rest of the idea is a tad silly. IPCs by nature aren't inherently wireless, nor are they traditional computers one could simply transmit a virus to. There is also a basis in mechanics for this already, as malfunctioning AIs can take over IPCs by hacking the APCs they use to recharge. Discussing it with Cake, we're pretty unanimous on that part. I think there's definitely merit in the mechanical degradation you mentioned, though - maybe working around that is best.
  2. Trivial lore is whatever will never be touched in role play. In my head, it's different from bad lore - both can be made in good spirits, and trivial lore may even be interesting - but there is absolutely no point in my mind to make lore which will A. not affect the universe at all or B. contribute to a centralized story which will have nothing in the way of player involvement. One thing I've been vocal about on the server is how much I love Vox lore - it is very short and straightforward, and the uniqueness of the Vox both on the server and in SS13 as a game allows players to make consistent characters while playing out their own unique and interesting story. It is ultimately a race which should be untouched - and lacks very little in the way of trivial lore. This logic, of course, should not just apply to racial wiki pages - things like planets, corporations, locations and other major things can easily be made pointless by excessive long-winded pages or repetition. Yes. There's no I in team. To be honest, I'm learning. Any excuse to start working on it again is fine by me and I can definitely provide whatever you want, given time and specifics. Absolutely. One of the things I like the most about roleplaying on the server is that I'm constantly out of my comfort zone - not everything is exactly how I want it always, and it helps reflect it onto my characters. Working with conflicting opinions and reaching middle grounds is incredibly healthy for a team. I figure that line of thought would help greatly, as the lore developers should work for and alongside the community, not against them. 99% of the time, yes. I very rarely have anything important to do but if I actually get a schedule to abide by, I'll inform you.
  3. This is a pretty simple and straightforward suggestion. I don't know how complicated it is to make the wizard spawn with more than one spell book, or give him more spell points in each school, but as it stands here are a few reasons why I think a change is necessary, separated by schools. Standard - I have never seen this book used nor have I seen it used myself. There is so little in the way of unique spells that it is pointless to pick this. Its only prevailing aspects are its artifacts. Cleric - 6 spell points. As little as I play cleric, I can say for sure that the utility of it is massively cut short by its spell points. Often clerics are forced to be peacewiz, as despite their ability to mend literally any wound, they can't heal internal bleeding and fractures - the two things that screws over wizards the most. Their most unique abilities are their blinding spell and major heal. For being something based entirely around peace and healing, there is very little holding the cleric up as something you'd pick for a peaceful wizard round. Unlike the other schools it has no room for spell combinations and the heals just make you a glorified walking advanced medical kit. Its artifacts are lackluster, especially with how garbage the staff of focus is. Cleric could obviously do with the addition of spell points, somewhere between an extra two to four. *Okay, after testing cleric again, apparently it has a bone mending spell. This changes quite a bit of my argument for cleric - however, it won't be hard to just disable you since you can't get the mastercraft set with cleric. So... you need to be robust as hell, I guess? Battlemage - Some absolutely RIDICULOUS spells, with one absolutely massive downside - it's a one trick pony. Either you're just a dude with a sword and shield who has a teleport scroll with 4 uses, or you're a naked hulk who gets shot to death in seconds upon being seen because you physically can't stop screaming, you can't return to your normal color, and you have laser eyes. Battlemage is built to be the most hostile wizard school, yet it is incredibly weak in comparison to the movement oriented spatial manual or "I'm fucking invincible" lich. One could say that the downside of battlemage is purposely designed, but when you're going up against 10 or so security officers and 30 crewmen, things usually end in 30 minutes. Even on dead hour, this spell book doesn't hold up at all. It's way too simple when you're limited to five spell slots. Spatial - The best spell book. No matter your gimmick, so long as you're robust and a good roleplayer, you can make spatial work. It is in a perfect position right now with ten spell slots - there are endless combinations you can do with it. It does get incredibly annoying when you're chasing a wizard with it for two hours to no avail, but very typically the player screws up in one way or another and kills themselves before that. Druid - This is like cleric, except it actually has unique and interesting spells to hold up a peaceful wizard round. However, once you pick those spells, you're done. Pick bears, vines, and jaunt - that's all you're getting. You spam bears and get grass everywhere. Woo. Or you get a beast companion - and get grass everywhere. But you can also summon beer into the hands of people around you. This entire spell book is "be peaceful or die" with no incentive whatsoever to generate conflict or antagonize the crew. A few more spell points could change that entirely. Necromancer - Literally pick lich to become a salt factory. This entire school is dedicated to murderboning and salt. Recent nerfs have made dealing with these annoying things more bearable, but honestly giving them more slots might lead to some creativity beyond "ooga booga me skeleton, me make more skeleton and me invincible". Though, with the sheer amount of drama and awfulness this school makes, it might be best to leave it untouched while the other schools get more attention. Changing the spell slots in accordance to the school's varying amounts of weakness is preferable. Giving all of them ten spell slots and calling it a day is pretty stupid - especially with how ludicrously broken lich would become. Lastly, an interesting way to actually randomize wizard rounds a bit more is to give them more than one spellbook at roundstart. This would allow people to mix and match their abilities to whatever extent they want. Of course this means lowering the spell points overall so you don't get 2 spatial manuals and suddenly have 20 spellpoints and become god. edit: typo. i'm tired.
  4. Ckey/BYOND Username: kyres1 Position Being Applied For (coder, mapper, spriter): Synthetic Lore Deputy Past Experiences/Knowledge: I basically grew up piecing together lore for several science fiction, and on occasion fantasy universes. I've been game master in various tabletop games that have lasted as long as a year each, from which I got quite a bit of experience writing on the fly, as well as creating an entertaining and involving story. The main story I had pieced together was something I heavily involved myself in, meticulously putting in some pretty pedantic details and trying to fit in the pieces as best I could. Just about all that could be expected of Aurora's lore, I had and still have filled in for the most part. Furthermore, irrelevant to actual lore writing, I've come to learn to 3D model pretty well over the years and I had at one point helped provide reference for a Hephaestus industrial mega-station as part of helping Cake. It never came to be used but I'll gladly try to help out where I can with Blender. As well as that, I'd like to think I'm half decent at spriting and could contribute with these skills on the side where needed. Examples of Past Work: This one's a bit tricky, as there's a huge amount of stuff I could share from my writing, to my models, to sprites and more. The vast majority of which I'd rather not put on the forums, but I'll gladly pick and choose what to give out to whoever asks for it over PM, so long as it's relevant. Preferred Mode of Communication (Skype, Steam, etc.): Discord @ noodle_buster#1934 preferably. Additional Comments: Please give as much criticism as you feel is needed. This is the first time I've tried involving myself in the community this way in my 3(?) or so years playing and I'm pretty excited to see how it'll turn out.
  5. First application - Security module, VAO Second application - Mining module, ROCKY Third application - Combat module, VAO Additional comments: This is my first application, so while the sprites are done and saved properly I'm not sure what to do with the images to use them in-game. As far as I know, this is only the third or forth time anybody has made a custom borg sprite, so I'm prepared for whatever weird BYOND stuff that might need to be done. Criticism is always appreciated. As for the DMI's, I think(?) I did them right. PM me and I'll send them to you. I was told that I would need to make the rest of the available modules as custom sprites as well, or pick a default sprite and be stuck with it. In the case of the latter I would pick the "sleek" sprite for the rest.
  6. There have been plenty of requests already to remove cloning before on this forum, the most recent being a few months ago in October. I don't think this discussion should ever really fade away with how many people feel about it, and something good might come of looking into it further. The most common deduction with the issue of cloning is just removing it altogether. Though, I think there's some merit to letting it exist - plenty of merit, actually. It is a research station after all, and it would make sense for something experimental like cloning to take place with volunteering individuals, namely employees. But there's a middle ground to be had here, which I'll say my opinion on now - Cloning should stay, but a less insane approach - like DNCs being standard, and cloning procedures being nonstandard - would make more sense. In a workplace where death is so prominent, of course cloning would exist. And of course, many people would consider being cloned after death if they don't see a moral issue with it. The problem in this case is that the vast majority of people without DNCs, are simply people who haven't even set their records. This often leads to repetitive and boring role play, with people being cloned in mass who most commonly care little about the effects of being a clone, or how their character would react to the fact that they had just died. Loredev input on the matter detailing why everyone would be set to clone by default would be nice. On rounds where the antagonists die and are non-crew, like raiders or mercs, and are cloned simply to be brigged immediately, or interrogated - one begins to question what the laws behind this even are. It makes total sense for NanoTrasen to consider an immoral approach like cloning its employees to keep its workforce bolstered. It's part of the lore - NanoTrasen is a gigantic, uncaring corporate entity. But crazy things like cloning have very big places in this game, and they need to be more clear cut and understandable. tl;dr, make DNCs standard. If you want to participate in cloning, then you probably care enough to set "Postmortem instructions: Clone" in your records. no mechanics in game need to be changed or removed, only regulations at worst. everyone is happy
  7. Sokolov is a fantastic character who's always a joy to roleplay with. Calion plays them well and is one of the better Tajaran players on the server in my opinion. Not cramming lore down everyone's throat upon being inquired of their past is a good plus. As far as Fideal, I'm not sure. I've rarely seen Fideal but when I have, they were an antag. Not really a good way to judge but Calion definitely kept good role play going with Fideal while it lasted. It's a definite +1 from me.
  8. I've played (namely as antagonist) with Seb's character Samiya quite a bit and I can say I'm pretty happy with the way they role play. Their dialogue, grammar and IC character interactions have always been top-notch and I'll happily leave my +1 here because of it.
  9. Tailson has provided some of my most fond experiences on Aurora with ASSIST and PB, and in the sparse times I've role played with Rex it's been no different. He's one of the few people on the server who has been able to consistantly pull off snarky and funny characters without ever crossing any lines or going out of character. I would gladly give my first +1 to this guy. Hope you get to play a squid, bubber.
  10. Literally none of this has happened. The account where the "bunch of miners" entered the raider ship was when a single miner in an industrial RIG entered the skipjack and showed no signs of hostility. This was the same woman who was bragging about her possession of hardsuit plasma cutters, a thermal drill and more all ten minutes before hand. It is also the same woman I had no faith in to actually roleplay fear of a shotgun, so of course I wasn't going to kill her. "Dress up" never happened. She was in a massive obnoxious looking dress staring at me as I talked to her about how my team was idiots but I would remain loyal. Afterwhich, the vox (who was not screaming for help. they were screaming in their native vox language and didn't look mortally wounded at all) came inside on his own avail after making it seem like he couldn't enter, and proceeded to reccomend I attempt capturing the miner with the incredibly powerful hardsuit. With... our single combat shotgun, and no armor. Needless to say I tried reccomending him otherwise but I assumed it was just Vox stupidity ICly which led to the player killing me. I was content with that, but clearly there was something else going on there. I have absolutely no idea why I would be considered to be playing "dress up" with miners on the ship. On that note, the miner was Mackenzie Groncko if that's how you spell it. I don't know who their player is. They're essentially Serena Jonson 2.0. Furthermore, "neglecting antagonist goals" is something I've never done. I've always put the fun of the crew first and foremost before the fun of the antagonist and I've made that very clear in AOOC before every single mixed round begins. If you believe otherwise, ask literally any person who has played antagonist with me. Antagonist goals are the fun of the crew and perpetuation of roleplay through conflict. It's why Cult is often frowned upon - because antagonists will go to just about any length, even murderboning, to achieve their goal of summoning Nar-Sie with the thought that they need to "win". This was not a complaint. This was a warning that I've since toned down from. The previous complaint was about me stuffing a space piano in the super matter. That doesn't make a very good impression either, but hey, it's a complaint and I'm not a liar. Of course it has to go back to "sexual" partners. No, what I did was list off my closest friends and then my friends sequentially because this was a sudden question given to me by a person I barely knew who happened to be my superior. Sex had literally no role here, and it's funny, because I honestly thought Jackboot handled the situation very well with my framing ICly. This fact has made me stop ticking antagonist as Yahir a lot. I won't lie, I land antag a LOT and my varying results has skewed the character in general. It's very common to see Yahir the center of attention over radio when he really shouldn't be, because people think he's "up to no good" when he could literally be sitting in the foyer talking to someone. I would say that this is because of an over arcing metagrudge against him, but I honestly can't blame it if I get traitor/ling/cultist/rev/headrev/loyalist every round. It is namely why I've moved to different characters and tried toning Yahir down. The intention was never to grab attention. It has been. TrickingTrapster is a person I've roleplayed with (in fact, they're very central to a story arc between a lot of engineering staff as Yumi Yotin) and has been slapping me on the wrist along the way. They have also issued a warning previously for, you know it, borderline ERP. If I'll be honest, the situation here is similar with Kaed's previous complaint. Not to attack Kaed in any direct manner - in fact I admire his characters after having actually roleplayed with them. But the complaint was based around first impressions. I have very rarely roleplayed with JackBoot and know absolutely nothing about his characters. The few interactions I've had with Jawdat have been when he was an antagonist, and I can only note two. A lot of the interaction Yahir has is canon but as I said it's hard to judge any more with how common he gets antag. Like I said I've moved to different characters and unticked antag as him to help remedy the problem of CONSTANT STUFF CROPPING UP. I honestly can't blame Munks at this point for needing to point it out. The character's behavior has been improving ever since because with the way he acts it's hard to believe he could maintain employment. You'll also notice the rate of crazy shit being built in maintenance by him has gone down drastically. Correct. And I'll say that time and time again I've toned it down and heeded to criticism, and at this point he might as well be a completely different character from the walking meme in which he started. The character is nigh two years old and conveniently, his first major interaction was with none other than Mikhail, someone whose player was apparently banned for ERP long ago by what I've heard. In short, much of the interaction I've already had regarding the events noted in this thread have already been OOCly handled through dreaded bwoinks or discussion with the players themselves (barring Hive and Munks and Saudus, each of which I've still yet to speak to except occasionally). Conveniently it seems everybody with no interaction with me has heard nothing but bad regarding the subject. Also, hurricane Nate is going through my area later tonight, so if I don't respond to this subject for a few days, that's why.
  11. Yahir Jones here. To be completely honest I had no idea any of this stuff with the AI was going on. I'd like to form an opinion on it but I personally witnessed nothing the AI was doing. I wasn't even there when the quartermaster originally drained the captain's blood. In fact, after about thirty minutes in (when the quartermaster died in the brig) I didn't interact with him at all. I will admit that, at times, the AI would sometimes follow me in holographic form and simply stare at me while I was conversing with crew. It was unnerving but after seeing me partake in suspicious conduct it wasn't TOO out of the question. Though, like I said, my interaction with the AI was basically nothing. I don't know what I could add to this, sorry.
  12. Alright, so this is my first post ever and it's a shame it has to be a reply to a complaint of all things. I won't complain though as it's best I throw my two cents in while I can. Firstly, before I move on to my response, this is my first time roleplaying with Kaed's characters to my knowledge. Feel free to prove me wrong but I feel it's worth noting when, to me, it is a first incident report. Secondly, I'd like to state that I have nothing to do with Traz other than an IC friendship between Zaun and Yahir. I've never even talked to them OOCly. Anyway - The majority of this is true barring the most important parts. The "rolling power outages" was the abnormal power grid activity event, and it activated whilst i was inside of the core already. Being the only engineer on board, the power outage obviously took priority over a piano, but at this point I had already pushed the piano into the crystal and had been making my way out. It was, indeed, a ridiculous meme challenge, but the repercussions for it were non existent. I resumed my engineering duty immediately after fixing the core and the power outage was resolved within minutes. The effort involved ctrl+clicking the piano and walking to the core was two, maybe three minutes of work, only amplified by Radic's IC frustration with the ordeal (because it was technically cargo's piano.) This is an interesting way of wording things to make me out as the villain here. The discussion was regarding the place of workers in society and how a social hierarchy can place some over others. Genders were a passing subject almost immediately brushed over. It was an interesting IC discussion which, of course, had no place in the common channel. It should have been moved to the entertainment channel. My honest opinion though, is that instead of exhibiting an OOC discomfort over it purely and making your actions seem rash, to instead make your character fed up with it as well. Before the announcement there was no chatter from security telling us to stop - the announcement came, and it was you threatening to disable one of the station's most important functions for an otherwise mild misuse of it. Of course, ICly I'd have stepped in, being an engineer and actually caring about people with emergencies to scream over common. It's iffy as well, because I'm uncertain as to whether or not you even felt OOC discomfort or if it was your character after all. Both matter of course, we're just here to have fun - but give IC reason for such simple OOC issues and you'll go a long way. This seems oddly personal for, like I said, someone I've never even interacted with. Regardless, a worker caring about their own workplace's safety and stability (not to mention the friends he has within the workplace) would certainly go over a commanding staff's decision, especially over something which, IC, is incredibly menial and pointless. Not to mention the commanding staff being in a whole different department and perhaps not even understanding the vital function of telecommunications IC. Stated before was the importance of one's workplace safety and, more importantly, the safety of their friends on board. This is reason enough to defy orders from someone whose reign is not over your own department and who may not even fully understand the implications of their orders, it being over another department's assets in this scenario. As a closing statement, I don't play edge lords and I don't aspire to be known as one who does. How you came to the conclusion to lump the flamboyant sexual deviant discount Preston Prestoff known as Yahir Jones in with an edgy crowd, I don't know. But I am interested in hearing your thoughts on what I've said.
