ShimmerIsTaken - Human Lore Deputy Application
The7thLain replied to Shimmer's topic in Developer Applications
Hi! Thank you for your application. Please pardon my delay in posting these questions, it's been Thanksgiving week and I've had little time to get to responding to you and the other candidates. I've read it over and I have a few questions for you to answer at your earliest convenience, but preferably by the end of this weekend if you can manage it. If you do not answer by then, I will move forward with making a decision on your application without the information sought by the questions below. 1. You have submitted a number of LCAs to our team over the course of your time playing here on Aurora. What does the writer position allow for you to do that simply making LCAs doesn't? You mentioned that you can contribute more than just by simply submitting LCAs, but I would like to hear your thoughts on why you are applying for the writer position specifically. 2. Your ideas for arcs are interesting and certainly seem to stick to an event-focused story rather than using articles or the like. Do you have any experience in running or volunteering for story or non-canon event rounds beyond just being a normal player in them? 3. Your thoughts on what to do for Elyra are interesting. I think the inter-faction dynamic could be a unique change to the country, but I do worry about it falling into some of the traps that some other factions in the setting have, that being a sort of frozen political conflict, where the factionalism and rivalry is stated to exist but nothing ever really happens with it. Could you elaborate some on how you would play with that dynamic in the future? -
Kintsugi’s Human Lore Deputy Application

1. You mentioned the material scarcity and economic conditions being something that you would like to expand upon and describe how they impact the lives of humans in the spur. Please name some ways specifically that you might write these impacts into our lore. These can be general or location-specific if you want to get that granular. 2. Elyra seems to be a hot-button issue for many of our applicants this time around. Could you explain some more on what your rework would entail beyond the crisis you mentioned? What would Elyra look like after the crisis has finished? 3. Beyond your ideas of setting importance and article complexity ratings for pages, what other ways would you like to streamline the organization/digestion of human lore pages? We on the team also agree that some of our pages can be somewhat intimidating to newcomers or even longtime players due to their length, complexity, or both, and would like a more thorough explanation of your ideas in addressing this issue. -
FlamingLily - Human Lore Deputy Application

1. I am intrigued by your assertions on the ideas of the Solarian and Coalition Super Cultures in comparison to the Elyran and Dominian ones. Given Sol's current state, how would you try to highlight this super culture more beyond the general rhetoric that the Sol Alliance might say about itself? How would you square this strengthened super culture with the diversity of Sol's various worlds? 2. Elyra is a topic that many applicants have brought up as "something in need of a look at." Due to the popularity of this topic, I would be bereft if I didn't ask you about your thoughts for the what the future of the faction might hold from the OOC standpoint of a human writer. What are your goals for the faction and what do you want it to look like once you have achieved them? 3. The phoron scarcity is likely going to last until the soft-reboot/NBT2-ening that is being worked on at the moment by the devs and the lore team. The "aftermath" of the scarcity is likely going to be a team-wide decision and has yet to be determined. Since you cannot write about the aftermath, I would like to hear a little more about your thoughts for just what the corporate-unrelated (since the Human Lore Team doesn't have direct purview over what corporations do or how they act most of the time) impacts of the scarcity might be on a general scale or location-specific scale, specifically impacts that escalate as time goes on. -

If you do not answer by then, I will move forward with making a decision on your application without the information sought by the questions below. 1. I would like to hear your ideas for what the "vibe of economic depression" might look like in your writing. I agree that it is something we should have, but how would you personally try to achieve that in the lore you would write? 2. Your idea for an arc does seem fun-fun-fun, as you put it. I think that we sometimes do forget that this is a game we play for fun. What I am interested in though is what impact this arc might have in the Horizon's story as a whole. Arcs take time and planning and because of that we usually want them to be tied into the ship's/crew's/setting's overall narrative, even if just ostensibly with the latter. How would connect it? 3. A lot of the additions you've mentioned seem like they have some promise, but they all sort of fall into the category of broader explanations of extant socio-cultural or scientific factors that exist within human factions and cataloguing them. Do you have any additions that you would want to add that are outside of this sort of statistics-minded lore? -

If you do not answer by then, I will move forward with making a decision on your application without the information sought by the questions below. 1. When you mention fleshing out the daily life for what planets in the Sol System might look like, what do you have in mind? I don't need a full explanation for all the planets (that would be too much work for just this question), but I would appreciate some specifics that are illustrative of the trend you would want to write out. 2. A Dominian arc focused on the colonial empire flexing its muscles is something that holds a fair bit of potential in my opinion, to the point where the concept has been thrown around every now and then within the human lore team itself. It's an interesting idea for sure, but I would like to know a little more about what your narrative goals would be for an arc like that, should you have a part in writing it. What do you want to achieve in the story? 3. A lot of what you have mentioned here is very setting-wide and big picture. A wide outlook is good for writing something as large as human lore, but we also write this lore for a game that we all play set on a ship flying through space. How would you want to see these changes or impacts that you've proposed effect the Horizon and its crew? You can pick whichever ideas that you've already mentioned and apply them to answering this question.

Hello everyone! Once again the time has come for us in the Human Lore Team to fill a vacancy in our ranks. We are quite excited to open up applications for a Deputy Writer position here and are excited to see what thoughts and ideas our candidates might apply with and how the greater Aurora community might perceive them. I have headed the human lore team for over five years at this point and I am very excited to help usher in this next chapter of what human lore on Aurorastation might look like. My deputy @NewOriginalSchwann and I both will be watching these applications with great interest and will offer feedback to the candidates after the community has been given some time to interact with their submissions. Before I show the questions that the application consists of, it would be prudent of me to express some of the Expectations and Standards that apply to a person in a human lore deputy writer position. They have been included in a spoilerised dropdown below. To our potential applicants, please be sure to thoroughly read and digest these before you apply. Rules for Commenters: Anyone can comment on the application, however those offering comments to the applicants must maintain good conduct and follow the server & forum’s rules. The same goes for applicants responding to those offering feedback on their applications. Brigading is strictly prohibited. Mass -1’s without any sort of substance or feedback of an applicant’s applications will not be tolerated and will result in moderation actions being taken. Applicants are free to comment on the applications of their fellow candidates and leave constructive feedback, however comments that are seen as unprofessional or comments that disparage one candidate in favour of the commenter’s own ideas or application are prohibited. Those candidates that comment in this manner will have their applications swiftly rejected. Format: Candidates must make their respective applications as new topic forum posts under the applications boards sections and clearly title them in a way that it would communicate to a reasonable Aurora forum browser that they are indeed applying for the Human Lore Deputy position. Along with this, applicants should clearly provide their BYOND Ckeys and how long they have been a member of the Aurorastation community at the top of their applications. Please also tag your post with the tags of "lore writer," and "human." When answering the questions asked in the application, please copy and paste the questions onto your application and then provide your answers to each question respectively. Application Questions: The application questions can be found below in a spoilerised drop-down. Time Parameters: These applications will be open for three weeks (2025/10/28 - 2025/11/18) so as to allow our prospective candidates enough time to get their ideas out there. While an applicant is free to post whenever they please within that time window, we encourage those interested in the position to apply early so that there can be more community participation and engagement on their posts. We want to inspire discussion and conversation with these applications and look forward to reading the interactions between the community and the applicants themselves.

Hello and thank you for your application. Upon further review and consultation with the IPC team and the Lore Team Management for the IPC and phoron-related parts of this post, we must decline the addition of these proposed changes and deny this application. They are not concurrent with how the IPC team wishes their species to be written with new synthetic vaults added to planets elsewhere than Konyang. Also, we the Human team disagree with their additions as part of Dominia's history. However, this was really interesting for us to read and we enjoyed the concept. It's made us think about adding something to the Dominian lore which gives them a broader explanation for the anti-IPC part of their faction beyond a religious doctrine that appears unjustified from an OOCly position. We want to add some explanation for that in the future and we wouldn't have thought of that unless it were not for this application. As such, when we add that content, whenever that might be and whatever form it takes, we will be crediting the both of you as writers in the announcement we make on the Discords and in the wiki's changelog. Thank you again for submitting your application.

Hello. Thank you very much for applying, I'm happy to see that we have passionate people in the community who want to contribute to the human lore of the server. Unfortunately, we've decided to proceed with another candidate. I hope that this does not discourage you from continuing to be an active member of the community who cares about human lore. -

Hi. For transparency's sake I would like to comment that I was the mod in question that Mel consulted with about the above-mentioned meme. I found no issue with it in regard to Rule No. 5 at the time she asked me about it, and I still find no issue with it at the present.

Hi, pardon the delay on these questions. I've had some personal events delay these for you and all other applicants. I will ask you three questions, the first I will ask to all applicants and the latter two will be tailored to your application specifically. Consider these questions as being from both myself and my deputy. 1. On balance, how do you see the Human Lore of the server being different with you than without you; what is something that only you bring to the table as a deputy? 2. We are happy to see that you enjoyed our past arcs. What about the arcs specifically did you find enjoyable and how would you try and replicate what you liked most in how you wrote an arc in the future? Note: This is not asking you for ideas for a future arc, but rather, how you would try to achieve the things you enjoyed in past arcs with your writing and storytelling techniques. 3. You've mentioned in your application that you believe that there are some areas, namely planets, that human lore needs some more attention. Please give me some examples of the places that need more attention in your view, and how you would like to proceed to making these additions. Please provide a minimum of two and a maximum of four areas you believe need improvement. Note: There was a new rule implemented after Xanu Prime's update that limits planet pages to a hard capacity of 15,000 words, so brevity is more important than ever.

ReadThisNamePlz - Human Lore Deputy

Hi, pardon the delay on these questions. I've had some personal events delay these for you and all other applicants. I will ask you four questions, the first I will ask to all applicants and the latter three will be tailored to your application specifically. Consider these questions as being from both myself and my deputy. 1. On balance, how do you see the Human Lore of the server being different with you than without you; what is something that only you bring to the table as a deputy? 2. Your focus on your application for "antagonist" lore is interesting, but also something that we in the team have had worries about in the past. How do you feel that antag lore should be implemented while striking the balance between not making it for antagonist characters exclusively while also avoiding some of the pitfalls that antagonist-heavy lore enables such as people purposely playing "victim" characters or on-ship characters that are, for lack of a better word, "evil?" 3. A lot of what your application focuses on is pertinent to on-ship developments and interactions rather than actions or developments that are off-ship "in the world." How do you intend making human lore that already exists or that the team may write in the future more present on the station during normal gameplay rounds, that being secret and extended. Do not consider running on-station events when answering this question. 4. You are an admin, and naturally this position comes with a substantial amount of influence and information in server affairs. It has not played any part in our considerations about you for the position, however there are some in the community who want to see "new blood" in the staff team, as in someone being hired to staff who is not already in a staff position. Do you have anything to say which may address this concern, should you get the position? -

Consider these questions as being from both myself and my deputy. 1. Something that has brought the Human Lore Team some concern throughout this application is your past body of work, and while you have acknowledged your prior immaturity in this area of things, we wanted to understand how your process in writing now differs from how it way back then. While we have a very broad swath of lore, factions, arcs, and locations, in human lore, we cannot focus on everything and keeping things tonally consistent between our 40+ planets can sometimes be challenging. What do you see as the tone/mood of our setting, what are your biggest priorities from a writing standpoint, and how would you implement them into human lore? 3. You mention wanting to focus elsewhere rather than Sol and Eridani. This is not an uncommon sentiment among the player base, as while we have a solid collection of people who love Sol and find it interesting, a general trend of opinion within the community is that we should move away from Sol-focused content for a while. The Coalition is a place that you mention as something that you want to see expanded upon, and as of this writing it is one of the lore team's primary areas of focus. Rather than how you may see the Coalition interacting with itself, we wanted to ask how you think the Horizon could interact with and be impactful within the Coalition's future developments? -

Consider these questions as being from both myself and my deputy. 1. On balance, how do you see the Human Lore of the server being different with you than without you; what is something that only you bring to the table as a deputy? 2. A lot of your application is somewhat Sol-heavy. While we do not solely judge applicants on their ideas for what they might write as a deputy, we also take into account their ability to work with a team and implement ideas, we are curious to know about what plans or ideas you might have for future developments or additions that do not involve Sol whatsoever? 3. A large part of being a human lore deputy is being able to write and write not an insubstantial amount. While you will not be swamped with work a lot starting out, we have some concerns about your lack of experience and little-to-no body of prior work. As a deputy, you must not just be a resource on human lore, but a participant in the creation of it. What strengths do you think you might bring to the human lore team that may make up for this lack of experience in the creative writing process or may strengthen your writing? 4. You are an admin, and naturally this position comes with a substantial amount of influence and information in server affairs. On balance, how do you see the Human Lore of the server being different with you than without you; what is something that only you bring to the table as a deputy? 2. We've received some criticisms from the community before about focusing too heavily on government or military lore, as some in the community feel that it is too detached from their characters. This is a compound question: how would you make the government lore of the various factions have a place on the ship and in the lives of player crew characters without making it intrusive, and similarly, what are aspects of human lore that you would want to write about/develop that are not related to the government lore? 3. A lot of the arcs you've proposed here seem rather confrontational. A complaint that arcs ran by the lore teams in general have received before are that arcs are too combat heavy and result in too many deaths. Do you have any ideas for future content which may address this concern or future arcs that might not involve conflict between the various factions in the setting?
