  1. Again, not much internal references. We don't know what "good CMO" to these people are. Fair enough for the RP. And no. I know a LOT of Heads that don't know every single job of their department - because IC-wise, it would be just SO MUCH studying for things like Medical and Science. Most Heads specialize in a single role (with general knowledge, sometimes). And furthermore, it's also extremely encouraged for Captains to have the background of a single department. For instance, there's my RD, Sybil, that mains actual research, while being rusty in genetics and robotics, and a bit of hazy on certain specifics of toxins research. And there was a CMO that no longer is on the server - he was the finest surgeon you could get, but don't ask him to do chemistry or he might blow it up, and as a psychiatrist he would make things worse. But still - a Head knowing all of the things is often considered powergaming because of how intensive it is to master all of the roles. As far as responsibilities though, that maybe the case for other servers - but we wouldn't have our own subforum if it was that simple here, hm? As for the two paragraphs, it said APPROX. It meant "don't type a single paragraph, but don't do a wall of text". Three or four paragraphs can be fine as far as I know. And for the violent bit - I understand. The problem is that, as I said, it would come up in the screening process IC. And a character who will respond and escalate like that is not ideal. I still feel that it should be explained how he got assigned. Favours pulled? Honors? Request? And finally, I agree with your last paragraph - and that's EXACTLY why Heads shouldn't be superheroes. They're not. They're there to direct their department, not be a single-man department. Otherwise, there would be no motivation to be a normal crewmember is there?
  2. I agree with this just because of today's antics.
  3. But Carver, that gives antags more reason to gank highly important people for their organs.
  4. Head of Security's Desk announcement: Attention, all station crew. As you may have noticed, there was an announcement earlier explaining that a fungus was aboard the station. Now, I've talked to the research director, and they've told me it eats walls. So, I want all idle personnel to please gather in the bar and wait for this matter to be resolved. The reason for this, is that it could cause a breach in our hull, and anyone out and about might be at risk. Ziva Mo'Taki [145.9] asks, "Head of securrrity?" Robbie Calhoun [145.9] asks, "Yeah?" Ziva Mo'Taki [145.9] says, "It doesn't rrrealy /eat/ walls. It'll be fine as long as nobody touches the fungus" Ziva Mo'Taki [145.9] says, "If they touch it.. Well.. The wall kind of starrts flaling aparrrrt" Sybil Rosetta-Sigma [145.9] says, "Same difference, really." Ziva Mo'Taki [145.9] asks, "Is the station still full of morrrons?" Sybil Rosetta-Sigma [145.9] asks, "Arguably?" Centurion [145.9] says, "No comment." Ziva Mo'Taki [145.9] says, "... She sees yourrr point. She'll get a harrdsuit, just in case"
  5. So uh, am I the only one who saw that Bickerson's bio has the date 2533 in it? That's like, in the future.
  6. Okay. I've never played with this player, but just based on the application alone, I say that they're not Head material. Here is a list of things that I find are wrong for a Head: According to who? I mean - since you're not whitelisted, it's most likely not according to anyone here. For all we know, you could be the most terrible. I can interpret that in two ways, and one of these ways could go very, VERY wrong. -The whole segment on the purpose of a Head. But most specifically, this: This is NOT what a Head is for, and I'm not sure I like what could happen with a Head that has that mentality. I'm not even going to comment. -Character is generic, "rough childhood and adulthood" character which is cited to have, in the 'things not liked' section a violence problem - which, while I'm not an expert, would certainly come up in the psychological evaluation that Heads, IC, are to take. (Unless it's something we've forgone/that I'm imagining remembering?) -On top of the above, this: To me, this implies that the player is too new to Aurora to know the rudiments of the lore. "Oh, I'm just going to start working at this high-tech secure research station." How do you expect to fill emergency medical roles, much less CMO, if you have to look at your keyboard to type? (Personal gripe of mine - I might be wrong On the flipside, there ARE some redeeming points: -One of the best answers I've seen for the reason of his presence in Aurora. -Good grammar and punctuation, and while pretty damn pompous and a bit sassy, generally seems like a non-bad player. But still, overall I have a bad feeling about this.
  7. Actually, Xelnaga - there IS more than you'd think that would be possible in these cases - the issue is that since, as you described, this is essentially gank, the only two solutions are counter-gank and/or powerplaying. For instance, and I'm sorry to all of those who are offended by it, when I am an AI in a situation where there may be ANY danger, I scan the whole station and set up my defenses as soon as something looks wrong (so basically, extended my core is 100% safe to enter. Secret, you have a 50% chance that if you try paying a surprise visit you're fucked. And if it's an actual gamemode, you MUST announce visits or otherwise you'll be dead before you even reach that radio). What's my defense mechanism? See, the AI has -full- control of the atmospherics in it's chambers. So what I do is vacuum the foyer empty, which serves two purposes - for the people who don't have atmospherics, it's a breathing hazard. No magboots, they get pulled right in at the mercy of my turrets (and there's a decent chance that if I saw and expect antags they'll be set to lethal). Then my actual chamber I overpressurize as much as possible - that way, if anyone tries coming in with any technique from any direction, they're either getting blown back from whence they came (which is most likely space or my foyer turrets, if they're not disabled). And then if that doesn't work, there's always the foam dispensers. Of course, that's still super ganky and borderline, if not downright powerplaying - but even then, this directly is affected by the expectations that no one will have magboots. And it's a cheap thing to destroy the AI so early - especially when, with a tiny bit more effort, you could most likely subvert it (that happened ONCE to me. The shifty fuckers made their way through the north, covering their tracks - they didn't even depressurize the other rooms. And they stole enough tools from Engineering (which was vastly understaffed) to be able to just deconstruct the walls to get access to what they needed. And subverted me. That was awesome).
  8. Covert, quick question. For Heads (very relevant to directors, but all Heads can do that to an extent) how much of the job should be administration and how much should be actual contribution to the department? Because I'll be the first to admit that I'm guilty of being an "uberscientist with access" - because it allows me to grab everything I need really fast - but I'm also the one who trains, records and marks discovery. And TBH, 99% of the time, crew is self-sufficient to the point there just isn't enough paperwork to fill out, things to note down, people to train, things to watch over. If what I do is considered incorrect, then I'd want better guides as to what I should be doing. (Though I have to say - so far, people seem to enjoy how I play my RD...)
  9. Because, by default, security has the most advantages. Vastly outnumbering, having actual access (and being able to get actual access), until it's compromized they also have the borgs and AIs, limited resources, corridors designed to make people easy to spot...
  10. Hey - welcome to the forums! This is a great idea - I do too listen to music while playing quite often! Here's what I usually listen to: Madeon - Adventure album Savlonic - Red album (Not everything is on youtube, but here goes:) Gorillaz' Demon Days and Plastic Beach albums (won't list all songs but here's my favorites) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=04mfKJWDSzI https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OJQyTnD74gk https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=crC4DKiKPYY https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tMt_YXr90AM https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xqqb0LGVKiI Kavinsky - Outrun album https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4gXqfO2YPNs Deadmau5 random songs: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HuC2MUmQaG4 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h7ArUgxtlJs https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wl6968xYsHg Mystery Skulls' Money, Ghost, and Magic: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YlEb3L1PIco https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_tZzlqkIQlU https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lhjk5x54bsE So really, more mood-based than atmosphere-based. Though you just can't skip the FTL soundtrack. SOGOOD.

    Socks!

I like this idea, and I would most definitely be using it.
  12. Destroyed sprites? Do you mean... like, these?
  13. Did someone say radiator and chemical containment sprites? Disclaimer: I wasn't TOLD to do them - but while I'm dissatisfied with the chemical containment sprite, it's more stuff to add to my portfolio as a spriter
  14. Yeah no. First, we WANT doors to be hackable - otherwise, most antags lose a very valuable and sneaky way to do their objectives - it encourages blowing walls up or melting them with thermite. And if antags still get to hack doors, then this whole idea is moot. For griefers/curious people breaking into places, we have security. And sometimes, in emergencies, it's a necessary action to hack into somewhere, either to not-brutally-die-in-a-holodeck-fire or to save someone so that THEY will not-brutally-die-in-a-holodeck-fire. Second, having the door switch identity check from IDs to fingerprints, mechanically, just asks to make everything more complicated. Instead of having a single item that has authorizations, you now have to make a system that remotely changes permission either in a virtual item on a person, or in the door themselves - and that can get messy fast, and may even be detrimental to server performance when there's a lot of people. Overall, not a good idea I say. And look at most high-security places today - they're still using a keycard of some form (either RFID, magstrip or physical strip or even NFC nowadays).
  15. We really do need a baseline description for most things. You made me realize that cult constructs MAY NOT be onyx-plated machine-shells.
  16. Yeah - if I ever see a RD behaving like that you can be CERTAIN there will be an incident report (if not downright a character/player complaint). As I said - it's not the first time I, as Sybil, taught newbies. Hell - just last week, there was this Zoe - completely new to science but with a good head on their shoulder. I gave them a tour of the outpost (because they'd never been on the outpost - said it was very educative), then gave them options and even allowed them a supervised trial run at xenobiology. They liked it, I promoted them to Student Xenobiology for that shift. The shift afterwards? BAM - without fault I had an actual xenobiologist. Give players a chance to learn safely and they will learn. Make learning organic - don't stand there ordering them like they're drones. If there's a librarian, tell them to study. If they're doing new things, stay there for safety and let them do their thing until they make a dangerous mistake. Ask them questions to test their knowledge, and if they don't know, give them the knowledge. And you'll have the best characters you'll have had - and then, later, if you know more optimal ways to do certain things, you can discuss it. (I think it was two weeks ago - I did that with Toxins, and ended up learning something. As a RD.)
  17. While I basically see it as "switching Cult from occultnuke to occultrev", I 100% fully approve of this because of how fleshed out it is, and would LOVE to see that happen - it definitely adds flavor to the whole gamemode. And I'd take it to 11. Cultists can summon Nar'Sie with 11 people/ghosts and have runes? Give the Chaplain and his acolytes wards that act like a wall to (or at least hurts) the cultists, and a ritual needed 11 people (not sure if we should count ghosts for a myriad of reasons - on the one hand, it would make sense to have holy ghosts and would give an incentive to the cultists to actually capture the souls of non-cultists, on the other it might be overpowered and might metapolarize people towards trying to work on a specific goal, and removes the evil in the cult's usage of ghosts) that wards the whole station against evil - which can have various effects, depending on what we want, from constantly harming cultists to preventing the summon of Nar'Sie until it's disrupted (just like non-cultists/the priests, IIRC, can disrupt the runes needed to summon Nar'Sie). But yeah - this would be awesome.
  18. So. I've noticed (and thought) about the current status of antags. As it stands, it uses whatever character you've currently readied with as the antag, only allowing you to change name. This has a LOT of disadvantages. Most crew with something special, about them, are severely handicapped (if not downright blocked from trying) while doing their thing. For instance - last I checked, IPC antags need admin intervention to get started, or they need to sloppily get to the station ASAP or they overheat. And wasn't there an issue of "the wheelchair operative" one time too? Point is, while they are interesting characters most of the time, they're not adequate for antagging. To this, I propose two solutions. Option One - have a "two-part" character sheet. First part is the standard stuff used for normal playing. But the second half - possibly hidden in Antag Options menu I think it was, is literally a whole second sheet for what character gets spawned when the player gets selected as an antagonist (or at least has the option to make the character not like the main sheet). Option Two - Give the players who've been chosen to be antagonists a chance to change character sheet. It might be less complex - but have a dropdown menu, before the name selection, that allows them to choose a character from their character slots (without modification). That way people can pick a character that won't be handicapped with the starting conditions of certain antagonists. Thoughts?
  19. ((YESSSS ALL THE PUZZLES. GIVE THEM TO ME AND MAKE THEM HARD.)) LOGIN>Klondike PASSWORD>******** ACCESS LEVEL>ENCRYPTED NET ACCESS GRANTED WELCOME A video feed of the silhouette man sitting in a tall chair, illuminated by various machines and screens showing a myriad of data feeds, show up. He is wearing some sort of full-face helmet, and his voice is hoarse, visibly affected by organic age.
  20. Fair enough, Shadow - though I meant with proper preparation, like whitelisting somehow, or Sierra's idea.
  21. Addendum: For the bartenders who feel REALLY fancy, Science can whip up some alcohol smoke grenades if you ask nicely and get the paperwork done.
  22. Nurses, MD, same difference. ;P But anyhow, point still stands. I'm 90% certain Jaden's the good doc I remember.
  23. A better way to implement this, I find, would be to switch the "focus" of the holograms from the holopads to the cameras. And a "Toggle Hologram" to either show, or not (and toggle a camera's "audio feed") the actual AI hologram. That way, the AI can set it's presence to anywhere it can see (which is even a bit more free than it's current position). That's my opinion, anyhow.
  24. Ckey/BYOND Username: Killerhurtz Position Being Applied For: Lore writer / wiki editor Past Experiences/Knowledge: I know how to edit a wiki, and I have good knowledge of existing IPC lore and mechanics (and really really care about them). Examples of Past Work: Wiki-wise I set up a sandbox wiki where I'll be writing things. Lore-wise? Does this and this count? What about this discussion? Preferred Mode of Communication: Right now, PM and Steam (name is "finallygotportal" without quotations) Additional Comments: I expect nothing, but would be willing and capable of putting one hour a weekday, most days (weekends, all bets are off - probably will spend 90% of the time I spend dead ingame to do it). Probably more.
