Marlon Phoenix' Unathi Lore Deputy Application
Marlon P. replied to Marlon P.'s topic in Developer Applications Archives
Great questions! My writing is very adaptable. Ive written something in just about every tone and for a diverse array of narratives. Anything Haydizzle wants me to focus on i will focus on. that said, my only preference is unathi continue to capitalize on the space opera market (romantic space adventure, melodrama, chivalric romance) because it's been a source of success. Thats such a vague and freeform concept that it really can go anywhere. When you say devices, do you mean actual physical devices? If thats so, then im not sure at all. Id have to think about it. If you mean devices more generally then, As mentioned in my OP im working on lore canonization submissions on new minor religions and the groups that follow them, and expanding the culture. As well as clerical work in regards to all the lore developments we've had. My goal is to have anything i contribute to have some kind of on-station roleplay impact. I dont know if its a satisfying answer but anything I write in an arc or lore I base on a real event in history or grounded mythology. Unathi lore arcs in the news serve almost like fables meant to inform roleplay, advertise Unathi with a dramatic story that shows their themes of being a space opera (swordfights, chivalry, wars fought over love; regular unathi stuff) stuck in a conventional world and how they deal with that, or give players insight into how Unathi operate to faciliate their own creativity. I believe they're consistent when judged together. Over 5 years they slowly developed from a backwater to a regional power with a lot of bumps and bruises. And in that time i was learning as a writer too! Could you please you give examples of where my writing's fantastical nature uprooted unathi from feeling grounded? Also im writing this on my phone during my works lunchbreak. Please let me know if i misinterpreted you and went off rambling in a way that didn't answer your questions! -
Oh man! Youre totally right. And i was there too! Lol! Nvm

Your work on NBT uniforms is great. You not only consistently provide uniforms but you are also responsive to feedback and prompty offer adjustments. At one point i asked what the uniforms look like under accessories and you provided a full range of visual representations. I hope you pass your trial!! Here let me help +1! -
I like the new colors. I was going to comment in-line with earlier comments on them. The zav_apprentice kinda looks like a heph brand uniform, but it might just be because they're stand-alone next to one another. With all the accesories and gear specific to their 'brands' it should all stick out more! So I don't see any recommended changes atm.

Mendell City Bugle Pt 5 Because adding small summaries and other work will inevitably break posts, I haven't hyperlinked any but the first few articles. I'm going to work backwards and hyperlink last so the formatting doesn't implode on me and take up even more posts. Man, this lore-canonization application is going to have to be like, fifteen posts long. And I can already see articles that don't have any follow-up "this changed!" so they might have to be retconned. Like with the Syndicate I do not know if the writing is that the status quo changed and it died out or they were retroactively removed entirely.

Marlon Phoenix' Unathi Lore Deputy Application

Im sorry there is one area you are mistaken. I have not argued against retcons. I asked if the old parties were retconned. This is the second time my asking questions has been seen as an attack on a rewrite. The second prong of my response on this is that its not even a bad thing of I was questioning rewrites, or even if I argue against one. There's a thread criticizing the new biesel parties; one I didn't participate in outside asking if it was an ic change. If when I do question a rewrite it's seen as me dredging up the past then so is any criticism, unless I'm uniquely meant to silence my own judgment? And even if I am 'dredging up the past', that is also not a bad thing. Something being old doesn't make it good nor bad. This is how they can be defeated in-game. Unless it changed you use a welder to open them up. Breachers are very strong but like in-game you can best them if you isolate one and gang up on it. Any lore hardware I use uses the same strengths and weaknesses as they do on-station. 12 zeppelins used in medieval times I would still argue don't count as having an air force when the tradcons had propeller planes that shot most of them down instantly. But i can ask to add "technically the first air power" to the hegemony's page. Being aliens the unathi's "tech level" developed very different than our own. I point to a society like the Inca where it was incredibly advanced and was one of the largest cohesive empires on the planet at the time, and they did all that without ever using wheels. It was a personal choice to not dive into the weeds on what technology they used in the past except what was explicitly mentioned because I believed at the time that a section on that would balloon to astronomical sizes. But now I think it could be done, but I still ask where the line is drawn. Like I personally do not know if it relates to character development on station if the Unathi switched from telegraph lines to wireless broadband in 2089 CE, but maybe it means something else about another technology? That's something that i'd engage players about and talk to haydizzle for. Atlas made a good villain because they had name recognition and everyone hates them, which is what you want in a fascist movement destroying democracy. Like, them calling for the sol capitol to be stormed in 2019 hits different after jan 6th... my only regrets are: i was ran out before i got to obliterate them in-character. KoTW did it though, and in a very fun way. And I regret not personally taking charge of their entire lore including the wiki away from the human dev at the time. Their wildly inconsistent wiki development was not from me. I was very hands off with the human wiki work, and the human developer was doing all of the wiki writing for ATLAS, I was focused on their narrative going on in-universe through articles. As an aside since I'm defending them: I don't actually support fascism or anything as stupid and nonsensical as racial dominance. Writing a villain doesn't make one emphasize with a villain. I could argue in narrative defense of ATLAS (but not their incoherent wiki info) all day, and i'd love to do it because that's how I learn as a writer, but that should go to a separate thread. I read the honor pages and it looks like they were added to, not really retconned. The rest also seems to be criticisms of info organization and wiki organizing. Pretty fair! There was a years-long debate on if everything needed its own page or should be consolidated onto one page. It looks like a new mantra for wiki organizing took hold in the year I was gone. Its weird that im being retroactively told id make a bad deputy because i didn't bet on the right wiki format horse. I've acknowledged what happened. My behavior was erratic and rude. Again, at the time I was under a targeted harassment campaign. Going wider, No work, including mine, is sacrosanct. I was writing Unathi for seven years. Elements will be edited, changed, or rewritten. Seven years is a long time on a single project, and I changed during that time. Of course a lot of older things will be reworked or edited. Every single species has gone through at least one fundamental reboots. Even Tajara, which are seen as extremely stable, went through a long period of rewrites, changes in creative direction, and hard reboots of each factions' entire ethos and reason d'etre. Every single dev would be denied if their work being edited meant they were bad devs. I am not unique. However, unathi have been edited here or there; after i left people extremely creative people added to and edited up but what i have is still there after a year and what seems like strong incentives to go ham on reboots. Reboots being neither good nor bad. I'm proud of the overall structural cohesion of my writing for Unathi that it's all still there. Even with the extremely natural, expected, and beneficial editing done to it by others. The same for anyone else - all work in a collaborative project changes going through the pipes, and even after being delivered. Thank you for your reply! -
Was just curious. We've been on the Aurora for 7 years, so was wondering if we'd change to match. Thanks!

Another great question with something I didn't expand on in the OP! Thank you! An extraordinary artifact, which would have strange abilities and powers, would definitely be something the anomalist could play around with before they are satisfied and ship it off. The reverse could be true as well if the rifts coughed up some artifacts for the xenoarch to investigate. I only paused on that mechanic because Evidence Fragments are placed on roundstart, and some knowledge requires characters to recognize the artifact and know that it's here from "rumors" they know at roundstart. But like I told another poster, having "minor" artifacts that aren't the big ones they get at round-start would still be fun to do so I will add to the OP sometime how the xenoarch can go with the anomalist. I personally feel that physically using the Generator should be something only the anomalist can do, but that's not a hill I'd die on. I felt that strongly and that's how cooperation and having it impact RnD's research speed were important things for me to include. The xenoarch has such a strong emphasis on social interaction that part of me worries that adding 2 in there would have them wrap up their investigations pretty fast. But this could be adjusted. The anomalist, who's job mechanically does follow that of a shaft miner, does have a radio and the Generator only needs 1 user. However their job doesn't "cap" like the xenoarch does (who runs out of artifacts) since the benefits they provide the Research Tree stacks perpetually. So I think having 2 slots would be fine to start with. No major project is implemented and then kept the same forever, and I assume that the job slots will be tweaked over time as we discover better ways of handling these jobs. It's just my personal assumptions on the 1slot / 2slot dynamic.

While on a 3hr drive across the state i passed some of the time working out (in my head) my planned proposal to haydizzle on the religious rituals. This would include things like items or rituals of questionably mundane natures; like the tajara tarot cards. This got me thinking about other minor religions on moghes. So i have another project to submit if haydizzle wants it. i have a framework for minor religions peppering moghes. Its that each one has to have a gameplay impact of mild to severe. Mild being dietary restrictions, severe being necessary items that take up slots or mandatory behavior etc. Anything i do though is controlled fully by the dizzle of the hay! -
There is cross-over. Ill have to edit the OP to make that clear. The xenoarch has artifacts and a method to determine if theyre "extraordinary" theyre placed on a rift to see how it interacts with it. Thats still stuff the anomalist does! this is a rehaul of its core gameplay loop. This rehaul is meant to be attached to my original overhaul of RnD to what for the sake of brevity I'll call v1.8, which changes the entire approach to research to a "tech tree". The goal is that the anomalists' work boosts RnDs v1.8 efforts. If for some reason 1.8 is denied, this and xenoarch is still possible, it would just fall to that criticism you mentioned of being redundant. In which case I think the core loop would still be fun, since as you mentioned its a more exciting miner, and miner is pretty staffed. Thank you for the response!

Thank you! What do you mean? Other than autakh, could you show me where? And are your concerns alleviated or reinforced by my writing in the op? Do you feel I cannot work in the bounds haydizzle would give me? Thank you for reading my app! Edit: Also its been awhile so i will mention i did not write original autakh they were a project from a deputy. I did sign off on em though! Theyre great! -

My next lore canonization proposal, which id work on as a deputy, is planning on being expanding the rituals of each of the faiths and how their, for lack of a better word, "magic" systems work. This would also include explicit explorations on the wiki about arguments/counter arguments each faiths have, explored in the original Religious Council where only in article form i gave players theological arguments in support/rejection of autakh beliefs. This would encompass all of them. -
While that's extraordinarily funny, the novelty drains pretty fast. It's possible. What are your thoughts on how a non-playable race's evidence fragments could be gathered in the case that the race is established as being the ones needed to identify it? Do we call them, or is it a mcguffin? If it's a mcguffin, how can we ensure Xenoarch cannot also use the mcguffin on playable races' artifacts and automating out some of the collaboration? These are the questions I asked myself, and I personally couldn't find an answer to them so I compromised on having artifacts come exclusively from alien races. However, thinking about it literally as I'm writing this sentence, I suppose existing artifacts don't have to be deleted and can keep being dredged up?

Thank you! I've edited the OP to resolve an inconsistency between whether or not the rift's state or the generator's state is what affects resource gain. They both mutually do so.

I did not make any form of defense. Past behavior deserves criticism. So does minimizing the behavior. Has his behavior continued? If so, -1. If it hasn't, then in my mind he's sincere and I can judge him on his own merits. If im mistaken, please show me why I should not +1. Has he lied about his behavior changing? Do you believe his behavior will remain problematic as a member of staff? If so, why? It sounds like you believe im minimizing harm. I'm not doing that. I say this as someone who faced a coordinated harassments campaign from within this community and was driven out by it. I believe people should be judged by who they are, not who they were.

The clothes compliment well with the accessories; the drip looks really good!

There is a stage in our lives where we do things that which we mature out of. It sounds like there is a concern that the behavior of the past can continue into the present. I am not sure I have seen Boggle repeating this behavior, but I haven't been watching him really. Even acknowledging past wrongs, I personally am a strong believer in people changing for the better. How much information do you feel each city should have, and what information is "important" to have in your mind? What do you want to put across when people read about Moghean cities? Thank you for any answer - and sincere good luck in your app in this friendly competition. đ

Gecko's underwhelming lizardeputy app
Marlon P. replied to Captain Gecko's topic in Developer Applications Archives
The Traditionalist Coalition was meant to be an entire world with innumerably complex and distinct cultures with their "own" traditions coming together to protect their "own" ways of life, through collective defense. The intention was to leave it as a blank slate so that any player could write any faction with any sort of culture and theme. It was, pardon the pun, a sandbox for them. Evolving away from this would be really exciting, and I'm deathly curious to see what form people would want to see developed. What would you say your line is between "sandbox" and "intricate details"? What sort of TradCoal assembly would you want to see in the history? Thank you for an answer and good luck in your application in the spirit of friendly competition. đ -
Overview This is the third part of my proposed RnD overhaul. Because itâs detached from the original documents it can be accepted or rejected without harming the cohesion of the other suggestions, found here. Justification. The xenoarchaeology/anomalist job has been suffering from staffing issues for years. It is also completely detached from the operation of the station as a whole, and the more important consequence of being inconsequential to its own department. The results are also repetitive, with the jobs not being satisfying in long-term play. That is why I have split them into 2 separate, 1-slot jobs. New Xenoarchaeologist Job Basics These scientistsâ and sociologists spawn with artifacts already present in their lab. These artifacts were discovered by field teams from âthe previous shift.â Using their specialized skills and cooperating with other departments they must find out as much information as they can to uncover if the artifact is mundane or extraordinary. Artifacts, even mundane ones, can carry great importance to other cultures. How far will you go for science? Xenoarchaeologist Mechanics Artifacts have five aspects. The xenoarchaeologist interacts with the artifact and chooses one of the following, filling in the answer from a drop-down list. Before completion artifacts are given randomly chosen descriptors. (A weird bowl ; a grooved staff ; a bold blade; etc) Its origin species. A list of playable species. Its age 200,000y, 10,000,y, 5,000y, 3,000y, 2,000y, 1,000y, 500y. Its purpose. War, recreation, ceremony, politics, religion. Its nature as mundane or extraordinary. The optional True Name. Provides additional benefits to its value. Aspects are discovered when five Evidence Fragments have been discovered. These are found in the following ways. Special âOld Booksâ in the library spawn on the shelves. They do not have text like traditional books, but when âreadâ describes an artifact used for [purpose]. The rest of the book is illegible due to damage. If a Librarian is present, the Librarian can interact with the book to ârestoreâ it, revealing the additional [era of creation] immediately. Up to five crew of the relevant [species] are randomly given knowledge of the artifact when they spawn, available in their notes tab. âYou have heard rumors that [descriptor] made by your people was recently brought to the Aurora. Itâs of great cultural value to your people. It's possibly [age] old.â If no crew of the type are available, and none spawn after 10 minutes, two Old Book Fragments spawns in maintenance with only the [age] and cannot be repaired. Its [nature] is determined by a chaplain or by an anomalist. A chaplain can examine the object and âinspectâ it for 20 seconds. After this is complete the chaplain learns its [true name] and [nature]. The artifact can be placed on a stable rift. After 15 seconds its [age] will be revealed by its interaction with non-causality. Mundane artifacts can be: Shipped to NT to be sold to the highest bidder. Unnamed: 100 ~ 400 credits True Named: 500 ~ 1000 Shipped to a factional embassy chosen from a list. This provides no mechanical benefits. It is for roleplaying colonialism or anti-colonialism. Extraordinary artifacts can be: Shipped to NT to sell to the highest bidder. Unnamed: 1000 ~ 2000 True Named 3000 ~ 4000 Used to accelerate research by being put in the destructive analyzer. Within the overhauled RnD, this would add 2 points to the Xenoarch topic. This stacks. Used to stabilize rifts. Weaponized.
