Complaint: Vira DeSantos Nuke round
Frances replied to Vittorio Giurifiglio's topic in Complaints Boards Archive
How old is Vira? Because a captain with extended military training and scientific knowledge is fairly Mary Sue-ish. Edit: I'm not saying it's undoable. But I'm expecting the roleplay from a person taking on so many responsibilities to be absolutely spotless, from an OOC fashion. -
Complaint: Vira DeSantos Nuke round
Frances replied to Vittorio Giurifiglio's topic in Complaints Boards Archive
I'm in agreement with Skull - there is no excuse for a scientist to hunt nuke ops, even less gank them, and even less gank them when they made no intent to fight. This seems like blatant abuse - I'd nevertheless like to hear 1138's side before handing out a verdict, but as I said on Seven_Ghost's complaint, this is the kind of behavior we cannot accept from characters in science. I'm tending towards a jobban. -
Opposing the entire station to break someone out of permabrig and then throwing explosive grenades at the security team is definitely flat out self-antagging. Did you even ahelp for permission before going to break someone out of perma during an extended round? Being in science does not allow you to go rambo with science equipment simply because you feel like it, or must perpetuate a vendetta against anybody who isn't your department. The rules clearly state to stick to "sane, balanced characters", and going to break someone out of containment at your workplace without a thought (breaking down a window from space was involved) and chucking grenades at people certainly does make you a little unhinged, if not at least very extreme. I'm tempted to give out a jobban for this, but I'll wait for input from another admin first.

Going around keyboard smashing is not a smart thing. Going around keyboard smashing on a heavy-RP server, even less so. I also cannot play out a scenario inside my head where this would cause someone to accidentally hit someone multiple times. So no, you need to control yourself. The ban stays in place.

1. Please use the unban appeal format found here in the future: http://aurorastation.org/forums/viewtopic.php?f=38&t=15 2. It was your own responsibility to inform us you had to go - I cannot think of any pressing matters that could justify leaving without at least giving staff a heads-up you had to leave, and being talked to by an admin is about the worst time you can leave the server, so plan accordingly. In this case, I'm against lifting the ban, because you failed at providing any roleplay to the person you were attacking - you simply stunned them and started beating them down in maintenance, which is unproductive and isn't fun for anybody involved.

I... Yes, but... What do you base your criticism off of in this case?

Ozemandea's Xeno Whitelist Application
Frances replied to ozemandea's topic in Whitelist Applications Archives
If you looked at other people's applications, you'd have noticed that they have at least put a modicum of effort into writing up a believable story for their character, which makes an attempt to (usually) integrate the species' lore. Given that you are not sure whether we even offer some of the races you're applying for in this thread, and are trying to apply for a race which does not even exist on our server, I highly doubt that you are informed on the current state of affairs of each species' lore as they are in our universe. Not only is this catch-all application utterly lazy, but you have not made any effort to type up even sensible answers to any of the questions asked - "you have to act differently" is not an answer to "what makes a species different from playing a human". You're gonna have to apply race by race, and you're gonna have to show that you take this more seriously than you currently do if you actually hope to be accepted. I'd suggest sticking to a single race for now, and actually thinking of fleshed-out answers you can give in your applications rather than generalities, as well as a backstory that makes more sense than "he arrived, he did the work, we hired them". Locking this because I can't see what kind of logical retort could be typed up to it. If you have any issues understanding what the problem is here, send me a PM and we can talk it out there. -
Ozemandea's Head Whitelist Application
Frances replied to ozemandea's topic in Whitelist Applications Archives
Aurora has only been around for one year. Additionally, due to the general attitude and lack of seriousness you've put in answering these questions, as well as your other present application, I'm highly tempted to deny this. I'll nevertheless wait for the other person in charge of applications to give me their opinion before doing so. -
The % fuckup chance on teleports already happens rarely enough that it's not really a consideration - and since it doesn't add anything mechanically, it seems to me like a failure in game design. Like, think of how many instances where somebody being teleported in space will be hilarious, vs the amount of times that it'll just majorly suck for the person, and nobody else will really care. It's an anti-fun mechanic with very little positive to it - not a good way to implement risk into the process.

I haven't played as much as I'd like to recently, so going off my own ignorance here. Some people said they had input to give, though, so I'll wait for that.
-
I haven't noticed any of your head characters, but I haven't heard anything bad from you in some time - which is a good sign in itself, and is enough to warrant an unban imo, if you've been playing other head roles just fine. Will wait a few days to get input from other staff members, and proceed from there.

From my experience, I'd say we end up banning/jobbanning/talking to a geneticist every 2-3 days. It's not a lot compared to some offenses (random grief), but the fact remains these are mechanics that are really not conductive to heavy-rp at all (discovering superpowers nobody supposedly knows about every round?) and don't see much legitimate use.

1. No one said anything about whites being solely responsible for slavery, and your post came essentially out of the blue. Additionally, I don't think it's an essential requirement to bring up other people who have engaged in slavery (historically or currently) when discussing the current status quo of whites around the world (much in the same way when we discuss the situation of Melvin punching Richard in the face, we don't have to talk about every single punch in the face that was given at any point in time by anybody, dead or alive). 2. Your argument made a very poor job of explaining your point, if that was it. Coming in and saying "let's not forget whites ended slavery" without context makes you sound like a slavery apologist, and is not related at all to other practices of slavery. I actually don't understand the relation between these two things at all. -

I'm going to stop you here before things escalate any further because what you're saying is actually both ignorant and fairly offensive. The basis of your argument is "whites stopped enslaving other races because it was too expensive". Is that, a point, that should go for them? Should we give praise to our aggressors for ending their aggression? I think the fact that white people engaged in slavery is far more important than any "yeah, but they sure did stop after a while, though." Furthermore, the majority of today's social inequities have been built upon a history of slavery and racism perpetuated by the Western world. Thee are outstanding issues that still exist to this day, and saying that whites should be given any amount of praise or recognition because they could have fucked up even worse is absolutely wrong. Slavery is not over, also. Human trafficking is a very real thing, and it's not because people don't own slaves in your observable community that they don't exist anymore. -

:I Annnnd... whooooo caused slavery in the first place? -
"Neglect of Duty" would be the corporate regulation that prevents that, though. Job-specific clothing exists for a reason. Non scrubs/jumpsuits-labcoats equipment is unsafe in medical because of sanitation/contagion, suits wouldn't make sense in science because they don't offer an appropriate amount of protection in comparison to labcoats, and they wouldn't be safe/appropriate equipment in engineering either because they would be cumbersome, restrictive in movement, unable to carry an engineer's equipment (toolbelt works just fine, sadly, but for the sake of immersion), and probably not as regulated for safety compliance as approved engineering gear is. Security has the excuse that officers must wear uniform at all times to be identifiable, so again, no suits there.

[Denied] Kane DeWitt - Worn Leather Jacket/Outlands Jacket
Frances replied to Kane's topic in Denied Apps
Welp. Alright, you win that argument. Unless somebody else wants to step in and explain that's not the kind of atmosphere NT would want to cultivate (which is really more of a lore debate), I don't really have any objections at this point. -
I think the problem you described is more of a general annoyance. Is it more difficult to get through a crowd of people when carrying someone on a roller bed? Certainly. But I wouldn't say it's impossible, and it still doesn't really make sense ICly for medical to have their own shuttle given the size of medbay (do note that no one else has their own shuttle, and escape pods are more of a leftovers from crew transfers being recoded from evacuations).

Are these events ahelped? Because that seems to go very clearly against our rules of playing average and balanced (ghosts). And since it's not an issue I was even aware of, I'm wondering if it's something we could simply try curbing, by disciplining the people involved.

Valkrae's suggestion is interesting - virology isn't much of a job at the moment, which is why it was grouped with doctors, but if you take it apart and merge it with cloning, you get... biologists? Maybe. I don't feel the full association there, thematically. The easiest way /would/ be to give doctors access to the cloning lab - since there's few legitimate geneticists, doctors end up doing most of the cloning already anyway.
-
That is fairly vague. Could we get some more details about said questions?

Here's the main difference, and why pride of certain things is more okay than pride of other things. Should you be proud to be white? I... don't know. But should you be proud to be a Nazi? Nope. A lot of pride movements belong to minorities - groups that have been bashed, ignored, and marginalized. Pride provides them something to rally behind; something to make them feel like they're not alone, and they're not forgotten. They're basically like a bit of a support group, in my eyes. Do Caucasians need a support group? Not really, because there's very few areas in the world (if any) where they're a minority. Do some people bash Caucasians? Absolutely - but that's generally in relation to the amount of race bashing Caucasians already did, and that opens up a whole new debate on positive discrimination and what's acceptable/productive or not. -
I have not seen a legitimate geneticist in a long time. Genetics has no sense being on a heavy-rp server as it currently stands - all of the mechanics are about discovering "superpowers" that let you do ridiculous things, and nobody seems to do as much as bat an eyelid ICly when it happens.
