We were all bald once.

So I have been playing ss13 for quite a few months now. In that time, I have learned all about the game, it's mechanics, how to RP to the best of my ability and what is acceptable behaviour and what REALLY isn't.

The purpose of this thread is to get back to our roots and how how far we have come.

Example: I began on Bay. There, as I was learning how to switch hands and equip and unequip, there was a Borg that showed me around named N.O.S.E

Now to my noob self, I actually thought all bots were named N.O.S.E, so for the longest time, whenever I wanted to call a bot, I'd say "can someone go and get the Nose and bring it here?"

Needless to say I felt very sheepish after learning the truth.

So yeah, give us your worst.

I began on facepunch, but I took the time to make a black man with a pink afro-kind of character that spoke in riddles and occasional expletives.

I was bald once, when I was born I was bald.

But to be serious, my first server was Apollo. I learned most of the mechanics there, with some help from with wiki and a PC gamer magazine - which had made an article for the game.

My first game was on a server that I really can't remember too well. It was a long while ago, when the map was just a hallway connecting Engineering to the Brig essentially. And I spawned in as a clueless engineer, walked outside of engineering.

Immediately, someone yelled "TRAITOR" and grabbed me, stunning me. Then stripping me and throwing me into space.

Overall, good round.

Posted

Actually, my first round consisted of spawning in as a black man with a pink-haired afro, walking right out of arrivals with a stride to his step and a jive to his rhyme.

A changeling camping arrivals ganked me via paralysis stun and sucked me dry.

Once upon a time, a Bluey started out on Alium Deathtrap. His friends were doing deep roleplay and stuff, but he just couldn't get in to it. This game was soooo complex, so much stuff he could do!

Bluey was a botanist. His friend was a librarian. Bluey couldn't even figure out how to save characters yet, so his was randomized each time. He was a bald woman named Valery.

(s)He said hello to their librarian friend. (s)He asked for a book. He showed them one, and (s)He took it and ran off, literally screaming "#yolo"

A chase ensued. Bluey found a crowbar and began beating his librarian friend's head in. Security was called. Bluey tried to run, but he was caught! And tossed in a cell! The officer left the cuffs on, so he escaped the cuffs and started beating the window. The officer came back, flashed him, and took what was his.

Now, it was obvious that this baldie was little more than a senseless griefer. But how the security officer reacted changed everything.

He sat down. He talked to Bluey. He asked Bluey why he had to act this way. Bluey said he was bored and wanted to start shit. The officer explained to Bluey that he's not doing anything productive, and that he's limiting how much fun he could have by being a criminal in a cell. He used some big metaphor about Johnny Cash to convince Bluey.

Bluey saw the light. He saw the wonders of roleplay.

That officer was Huey Bancroft. Bluey remembers his name because he was so awesome.

When Bancroft found out that Bluey was in a cell for 30 minutes for stealing a book, he waited until it was over and took Bluey straight to the therapist. Then, Bluey began to actually roleplay and he loved it.

Then Bluey got banned for stabbing people with Chloral Hydrate.

Then Bluey hopped servers like a bunny and got where he is today.

I first started playing on Apollo and always read different wikis for SS13. I kept experimenting and doing stupid shit on there till I got perma'd, then I went over to bestRP, got way better, then came to Aurora.

Started on GOON. Started at the final stages of the Ovaries station, played throughout the entire Donut 2 station, and then a good few months into the Mushroom station. For those who know the time references, anyways.

Did, usually, either mining or security with a friend of mine. I was rather proud whenever I managed to get a RIG suit with uqill and whatnot. Also became somewhat good as a miner, if I do say so myself. And really enjoyed the heck out of it.

Security was also a fun experience. Died a few times, fucked up a decent lot, but funtimes were had.

One thing I was always afraid of, though, was playing antag. I did it a few times, and kinda never again. Because stressful. Minus nuke ops, nuke ops while antag was also fun.

Also, Erec Bellard was my character, so that's where the name came from :P

I was introduced to SS13 by a group of friends who played on Paradise. I don't quite remember who this was, but I'm 99% sure it was Loow... One of them told me how to put a paper bag on my head. But didn't tell me how to take it off. I panicked, and then someone walks up, takes the bag, throws it in disposals, and walks off without a word.

I also saw a mime being dragged down the hall by a clown. The squeaking still haunts me to this day,

I saw a random let's player play this game around a year and a half. The idea of an RP game where you have a job of your choosing was something I always wanted.

First round, joined as a orange haired security officer with a last name Harkonnen. Didn't know shit, a kind fellow security officer tought me how to play. He tells me to join as chemist next round.

Second round, he teaches me how to mix space drugs and how to inject them into cigs. From that moment I liked the game.

Played for a month or so, stopped, started again five months ago.

I jumped from server to server, actually ending up on Aurora relatively early. When i came, i knew the bare bones, and a helpful tajaran quartermaster taught me how to operate everything (don't remember the name and i regret it a lot now). It was very different frm other servers. I saw the quartermaster decorate the lobby and talk to some russian sounding officer about someone having a thing for the Tajaran. He showed me how to operate everything and i tried my hardest not being really boring (i was) and really thankful he showed me everything. Then he left and i got a chance to be QM. It felt really good and i started learning how to not be te most generic person onboard. I also remember starting off with a cyberpunk inspired name that i had to change because i wasn't aware of heavy ar pee. I proceeded to make William Rydell, first consistent character , and just test stuff out from then on

Been about 2 months playing i think

I have primarily played on Apollo, Aurora and Hypatia; I started out as Gollee Truesight, Shaft Miner, along with Eragong as Calvyn Joran. We server hopped between Apollo and Hypatia for a while, Eragong got bored after he got a month ban from Hypati. Inis, Gollee's sister, began showing up in security; where Tool thought she was a griefer. My other original starter character was Valstann Staghelm, an angry engineer.

I have only been banned once, a dayban from Apollo that was entirely wrong (In my opinion).

I only play on Aurora now, or Alium, when Aurora is down; as it isn't actually that bad.

Inis and Gollee originated as Warcraft characters, and the characters that sprang up around them, Whisper, Varan etc, have been translated back to WoW.

I have exstensive retconned backstories of Gollee and Inis if people want to laugh at them.

I started on Goon a long long long time when I saw a youtube video. I was bald of course, and it didn't play anything other than Supply just because. Then eventually after a couple years I migrated to Yogstation thinking it was some intense RP, I began as Liam Bernhaben a sec officer. After a couple months of Yogstation I migrated to Hypatia and was amazed at the RP. There I saw Maria Valance(Chaz's character, I didn't know him back then) and then after only a couple weeks moved onto Apollo. On a Apollo my first round I joined as a security officer with no limbs and just kind of crawled about the floor. Apollo was really dead back then about 16 players per round. I'm surprised I didn't get banned for my limblessness to be honest. The next round I joined as a security officer with no legs but with two arms, someone ended up dumping me down disposals where I met someone who I can't even remember their name. They had one of my favourite medical characters who saved me.

There I was carried around by a detective, the detective actually had a traitor mission to protect me, I had no clue. After that I joined as Liam Bernhaben, detective. And so began my hefty time as security, pretty much always played as detective and then eventually Warden. I then applied for a head whitelist where I was denied for having terrible grammar(thanks Laser) and was unchanged in my opinion to be white listed, so I put up a second one. While I was waiting for that one to be accepted I was playing as Liam Berhnaben Warden and was hacked to death by a botanist and his friend, my HoS eventually found me, this HoS was Nikolai. Nikolai Petirovsky. Nik +1'd my app as did a couple other regulars and that was it. I was white listed. I then created Michael Tool the HoP, the one armed HoP. And continued my stint in security and HoP until I became comfortable enough to play Captain.

On my first Captain round my HoS had been transformation stung, my HoS was - Lysanuh Dilgan. My hop was furious that I wasn't having Dilgan arrested but I was moved by Lysanuh's words. Lysanuh of course became sort of tutored by Michael and in time the guy who played him(Nightmare00) became one of my best friends. Me and Nightmare played security endlessly and I met some good people along the way Seth brode(Sub digital), MrRagingSunshine, Farcry and a load of others including Nebula and even Rasputin, Hackie Man's character.

One person that always sticks out is Monroe Sagan(played by Rockin'since). He is the best damn CE I've ever played with and is honestly one of the nicest people too. I became heavily invested in the community and friends with a lot of the staff including Chaz and Sphere(huehuehue we'll get to these two) and even KT.(the git) one round that always sticks out to me is when Me, Nightmare and Chaz all played security and me and Chaz were Soghun(Unathi), KT(The Apollo community manager) demanded Chaz stand down as HoS Chaz said fine and did, me and nightmare were outraged and stood down as well. We all went to drown our sorrows in the bar and it ended with us having the captain tied to a chair bleeding out, Awan with his face bashed in by my stool and Nightmare strangling an assistant as the Captain had attempted to arrest us for quitting.

I met Gollee and Skull at some point here, my first encounter was Skull asking me if we had combat mechs in our lore and telling me about his Eridani federation in the bar, and with Gollee, Inis arrested me and beat me a little bit by the orders of the HoP, who was later fucked over by the HoS. All this while I was the CMO. Eventually I decided one of my characters would romance Inis, Inis at this point was a hard nosed super mutant bitch. Eventually my character managed to wear her down and then Gollee retconned her to being nicer.

Anyway I eventually worked my way to moderator where after about a week I was made an Admin. During this the Apollo lore team had been founded and, me, sphere and Farcry were all discussing a new server in the Google docs chat, eventually I told them that me and Rockin'since were planning on starting one, they jumped on board and eventually they had convinced most of the playerbase to join us at a new server. I was so shocked and we began making plans immediately. YOU WOULD NOT BELIEVE HOW LONG IT TOOK US TO COME UP WITH THE NAME AURORA.

The problem is, some people I hadn't invited and people that were ex staff of Apollo had new ideas and weren't going to go with what we wanted, they left to form MA and we continued with Aurora. Eventually Laser found out and decided he would side with the MA lot. This is where what I like to call the 'split' happened. Laser took people, Carston took people and We took people. Forming three servers.

Me, Chaz and Sphere founded aurora and managed it, but we were helped by a few others. I was community manager for a good little while before I decided I was done with SS13 drama. I then left SS13 for months before coming back to find Skull as the Head Developer, Sphere as the Host and Subdigital as the Head admin. I left once more and returned during the summer of 2014, where I played for a few months and left once more only returning in February this year. Anyway I know you didn't expect a life story but I felt I should tell my origins and some of my favourite tales

As a story I like to tell often, I started on LLA, back in 2011. This is when the Security area, bridge, court room, and brig were all connected. My first game was like a lot of people's, in that I started as Security. This was before Space Law was a thing and such.

So, mid-way through the round, myself as Phoenix Rock arrests somebody, and I jacked to the timer up to about fifteen minutes for theft, without asking anybody. The HoS later called me into his office, and told me what I had done was wrong.

Not giving too craps, I figured out how to grab people, and called the HoS to the security airlock. Once there, I grabbed him, while still in front of him, opened the airlock, and threw 'him'. Of course, instead of spacing the HoS, I spaced myself.

The HoS had been the Host as well, so that was pretty fun.

I managed to get almost the entire staff against me, besides the Host, and once he left, so did I.

Thus began my year long break from SS13, which later turned me in just server hopping around, until I finally came across Apollo.

My first round ever was on Goon. I was never bald, but I very quickly got crowbarred, welded into a locker, and spaced. I didn't stick around.

My first real station was Libertystation, a smallish light RP community. Mostly I ran around as an engineer or chef, and the highlight of each round were the constant engine fires (they used combustion) or the constant toxins fires.

Eventually I found Baystation, and quickly fell in love with their style of play. While I can't say I always had good times there, the staff were for the most part friendly and the community there was (and still is) amazing. I went from engineering, to science for the longest time, to medical, to engineering, to medical, and back to engineering.

Sadly, B12 has changed in many ways since it was a few years ago. Their administration has had an almost complete overhaul, and their playerbase has similarly had a very large turnaround. While I remain friends with many of the B12 old guard (Hawk_v3, Kyrnz, Yoshax, Sparklysheep, Ikky, Searif, Serithi) i found myself coming here after getting fed up with the decisions and insular nature of their administration. While in-game you guys are more restrictive in many ways, I've found your staff to be almost uniformly friendly and open. It's a welcome change, and I'm happy I moved.

At least when I disagree with skull or sound on something, my opinions and ideas are not instantly dismissed as "irrelevant". That is a very, very welcome change for me.

I started playing on BestRP after a couple of friends pestered me to and I spent, like, a week figuring out how to get BYOND to run on linux. One of my friends helped me get started as a geneticist (he likes medical stuff, so usually played CMO), brought me space drugs, and showed me where to go to evacuate when the time came. I survived many rounds hiding in genetics (or, later, R&D and chemistry), keeping my head down, and avoiding clowns, and getting high.

When I was confident enough with the game, I started playing AI... which I learned mostly meant my job was to track and bolt the clown. Also other miscreants, but usually the clown. I was "Red Queen" or "SAL9000" at first, later I came up with "EmPrESS", which is awesome. After a while I got a little sick of the Total Fucking Madhouse that BestRP is (or was, I don't think it's around anymore), so I started playing on high-RP servers. Aurora and Hypatia mostly. And I settled on Aurora 'cause the AI laws on hypatia are weird. Also, I like the head whitelist.

And so, here I've remained, playing EmPrESS, bolting clowns, and occasionally being forced to release the singularity. But really, that's only been 2 or 3 times... you know, that I can think of.

I first played SS13 a couple of years ago, after reading all those whacky stories of whacky space antics somewhere on the internet. I wasn't really into roleplay at that point (didn't even really know what it was), so I joined as a baldie on one of the Goon servers with plans to have a crack at the captain's famed laser rifle. I took one step off the shuttle and got a beaker of acid thrown in my face. In paincrit and blacking out every minute or so, I was pulled (not dragged) to the medbay by a passing security officer. One of the doctors turned out to be a ling, who quickly dragged me into maintenance and promptly ate me.

I didn't play again for several months.

When I finally tried again, I wanted to see about a more slow-paced server, and decided to try Apollo. My first proper character was Grant Miller, a bald security officer who later graduated to a skinhead haircut. After a few weeks, I applied for and got a whitelist, and so Grant became a Captain/HoS. Nobody liked him because he was creepy, so I retired him and created a new character: Janet Fisher (I had trouble coming up with a last name, and saw my copy of Splinter Cell on the table, and named her after the protagonist). I started to develop her character.

When Apollo split, I followed the largest grouping of my favorite players over to Aurora, where the origial triad (Chaz, Sphere, and Tool) granted me the title of modship. The rest is history.

That was a fun, interesting read, tool

Especially to someone like me, new and not very acquainted with the past of Aurora

You're welcome Johnny, I'm pretty sure Skull did a history of Aurora post(Happy birthday Aurora?)(missing a few things like Sphere's involvement) but it's still worth a look if you're interested in how we got started. And thanks :)

I never started bald, I started with a Mohawk. Began on /tg/ and quit at the beginning when /v/ discovered SS13 and the server went from semi-reasonable shenanigans to ALL THAT MATTERS IS SCORING VALIDS. Hopped to Bay when it was a really strict mess and people literally berated others in ooc on a daily basis and Spaceman96 was the prime example of it before he finally fucked off. Eventually staff turned over and things got more lax but not to /tg/ level and recently SS13 hasn't had it's same draw.

Oh boy do I love to tell this story.

The first time I ever tried SS13, I logged onto one of those servers where assistants start with a plastic bag.

I had no idea what I was getting into - I decided I would just click some buttons, figure out how things work.

Within a minute or two, I've managed to put the bag over my head and, unable to get it off, I suffocated.

Hello Space Station 13!

I would basically just log onto different servers, try to RP for a minute or so, fail terribly and stuff an SSD down the disposals.

The admins would yell at me, I'd log off, and repeat somewhere else.

The milestone was this one time when I found myself flying in space, running low on oxygen and raping the hell out of the pray button.

Skull answered those prayers and summoned up an entire bloody location within a few minutes to act out a religious experience for me.

Haven't left Aurora ever since, except for a round or two at Colonial Marines.

Edit: I have this feeling I knew how to make improvised grenades before I knew how to behave.

Right-o.

Basically, before IncognitoJesus was IncognitoJesus (I guess you could say, it was the one time in my life I was actually Incognito, hue). he was in several ARMA II milsim units.

Dorky? Probably, but it was nice. Either way, it was through ARMA that I met somebody named Casey, who was an admin on Best-RP.

It was on BRP that I forged my knowledge of general game mechanics, my first round being an assistant (who wasn't bald, in fact) who was led around by a Tajaran captain (okay, the rules may or may not have been bent for him) throughout the station. I was promoted to Blueshield so it at least looked somewhat okay. I had the game mechanics explained to me, and then Casey logged off and I was on my own. I started playing on my own after he stopped playing, and then well, yeah. I bounced around from various jobs, and had a few different characters (Hardic Rammendeep, for one).

Either way, I decided I wanted to try something new, so I loaded up Alium Deathtrap. From there, I went and found the nearest SSD and began strangling him in the escape airlock. I then got a PM from Walter which asked me to find the rule I broke or something to that effect, Idunno. I then said, "What rule?" and was then perma'd. I think it's still in effect, but whatever. That was my first ban, one of only two. I then ventured out to Apoc Station. Basically, I was talking about how horrible the AI was and then got a day ban from the lovely staff members there for apparently "OOC in IC." I assumed the AI was a friend of theirs, and shrugged it off. Whatever, it's only a game. I then went to Apollo for a round or two, where I said one thing in OOC and Battlejesus was on so obviously, he said something about my ckey. I decided to leave, and more than a year ago, I ended up on Aurora. I started Senri Toya, who then became Senri Ishikawa, and yeah.
