DronzTheWolf Posted March 9, 2021 Posted March 9, 2021 I was looking at the loadout, and miners have no hard hat access, nor is there a mining helmet for us industrial IPCs to use. We can't use the actual voidsuit or hardsuit helmets for light, so we're just screwed, right? Wrong. This suggestion is to give miners their own helmet, which gives the same yellow light as the voidsuit helmet. Or at least give them access to the current hardhats, so they can wear those. Below is the .dmi of my proposed mining headlamp, and the sprites to look at.Mining Helm.dmi
ThelonTV Posted March 9, 2021 Posted March 9, 2021 (edited) They look dope as heck! Edit: I'm retarded and can't read. Edited March 9, 2021 by ThelonTV
Happy_Fox Posted March 9, 2021 Posted March 9, 2021 I very much support extending hardhat access to miners for the benefit of IPCs/Dionae. Would also make sense for all miners in NBT if they need to do prospecting on planets etc to have access to them.
Lmwevil Posted March 9, 2021 Posted March 9, 2021 yeah also useful for vaurca who don't wanna use their darksight for whatever reason, tbh if miners just started with lanterns that'd also be pretty dope
BunkyB Posted March 9, 2021 Posted March 9, 2021 Diona don't get enough light from lanterns or hardhats to survive in space. They're boned unless someone gives them a circuit light.

Carver Posted March 9, 2021 Posted March 9, 2021 Is it not somewhat supposed with their (at least previous) brute resists that Hephaestus units and to a lesser extent Ka (I honestly can't remember which of the bug sub-types had the brute resist) have built-in helmets? It seems silly to me that a G1/G2 in particular would want some impact-resistant plastic instead of relying on their industrial-grade frame. If anything, I'd prefer a return to mining having lanterns or perhaps those heavy flashlights you rarely see about.

You can't hold a flashlight and pump a KA at the same time. The big flashlights can't go in pockets, and a flashlight doesn't provide light inside a belt like the mining/explorer belt. The hard hat is a perfect workaround. And you forgot the most important part of mining: Aesthetic.

Could just have attachable headlamps instead of a helmet (which might be a neat universal synthetic loadout option). On the note of storage, I think flashlights can go in the suit slot of the low-light safety vests. Overall I just want to minimize the dumb aesthetic of 'industrial model with head thicker and harder than a hard hat wears a hard hat'. It's like strapping a stab vest over plate armour.

What you think is a dumb aesthetic is actually pretty cool to others. Like me, for example. It's less like putting a stab vest over plate armor and more like putting a ballistic plate inside of a soft armor plate carrier. As well as mechanical reasoning, industrial IPCs do not get any of the bonuses of wearing a helmet when they're not wearing any head protection. The stun resist from being bottled over the head, for example.
Happy_Fox Posted March 10, 2021 Posted March 10, 2021 Also when the Xion mining team came to the station in the KotW arc they all had mining helmets on and looked FANTASTIC

Getting bottled over the head is a scenario that only occurs under circumstances entirely unrelated to where a shaft miner requires light, out mining. That's a very curious 'need' for a helmet.

That's a very curious 'need' for a helmet. That wasn't really a 'need' as much as refuting your explanation of "why would an IPC need a helmet". It was the first thing to pop up in how helmets and other armors differ mechanically from species armor, that being that species armor is just minor damage reduction with none of the other mechanical protections.

Fair enough, my point is more that it just seems ill-fitting and the mechanical need for a light is what should be addressed as the existing problem - rather than a cosmetic desire for a helmet.
DronzTheWolf Posted March 12, 2021 Author Posted March 12, 2021 This will also open the helmets for non-IPCs. Which, they won't need it. It's just a cool aesthetic thing so your miner can look more like a real miner. Another thing that could be done is a soft cap mining lamp like they had in the like.. 1800s/1900s.
Carver Posted March 12, 2021 Posted March 12, 2021 A soft cap might be cool, both on grounds of being something pretty reasonable to wear even outside of the work environment and that those tend to have more adjustable fitting than the liners in helmets (so it wouldn't seem too silly for it to be wearable by most species).
DronzTheWolf Posted March 13, 2021 Author Posted March 13, 2021 I'll see about making one, based loosely* on the mining hat from RDR2. Just with a battery and electric lamp instead of an open flame.
ImmortalRedshirt Posted March 15, 2021 Posted March 15, 2021 Wait, I'm confused. Don't voidsuits get in the way of hardhats?
KingOfThePing Posted March 15, 2021 Posted March 15, 2021 Its about species that do not wear voidsuits
