[Accepted] Lualyrr's IPC Whitelist Application

Recommended Posts

BYOND Key: Lualyrr

Character Names: Kim Lowe, Thuy Huang, Lia Rowley

Species you are applying to play: IPC (Industrial)

What color do you plan on making your first alien character (Dionaea & IPCs exempt): ///

Have you read our lore section's page on this species?: Yes!

Please provide well articulated answers to the following questions in a paragraph format. One paragraph minimum per question

Why do you wish to play this specific race:

I've always had a fancy for partial synthetic characters. Especially the cooperation of organic and artificial parts was something that fascinated me.

Lately however, I feel like I'd more and more like to play a fully artificial construct, that is mostly free of human needs such as food, compassion and some such. I think IPC's are in the highly interesting twilight zone between humans and station-bound Cyborgs/Androids/Robots.

Further I think IPC's are a good way to add some tension to the Roleplay. There's still many people that are very anti-synthetic, and plenty of people that are pro-synthetic.

Last but not least I'd like to enable some of the Roboticist - IPC roleplay beyond 'Repair me.' Maintenance is for example a - in my eyes - interesting aspect in the calmer Extended rounds.

Identify what makes role-playing this species different than role-playing a Human:

I have intended to play my character largely in the way that the Lorepage on the Information uplink suggests. (To quote it briefly; "..most tend to have complex processing units and in turn, positronic brains. This allows them to have a wide skillset but they generally lack in complex emotion synthesization or much personality...")

My IPC is supposed to appear robotic in general. Their speech pattern will be logical and clear - void of filler words. (Uhm. / Well.. / Like.. ) Thus they might seem simple or unintelligent at first glance, while they really neither need, nor possess meanings of complex emotion synthesization.

Hostility can be met with a more logical approach. My character won't be able to act out of spite or dislike. Neither would they favor person X over person Y just because person X has been friendly in the past. This part is in my eyes especially important for a Security based Unit. And thus probably one of the main reasons why NT would employ an IPC into their Security force at all - next to their general durability.

Character Name: DSU Vindex

Please provide a short backstory for this character, approximately 2 paragraphs

A mere three years ago, a small NanoTrasen subsidiary tried to create a capable, mass production-able Security Unit. In an attempt to satisfy the growing need of Security due to the Corporates expansion, “DSU Vindex” was designed and manufactured alongside a handful of other IPC Prototypes. A critical testing phase has ruled out most of the other IPC’s either due to mechanical failures or the fact that their Industrial Frames could not provide the necessary function to serve as a dedicated security unit. The subsidiary held a majority vote and decided that “DSU Vindex” was the right candidate to be presented to NT officials.

The presentation went well and “DSU Vindex” was greenlit to be stationed on one of NanoTrasens Stations. It served well on the Triage Center Station NSS Phoenix and hasn’t failed to perform its duties once. The Robotic nature of “DSU Vindex” soon proved to be a problem for some of the NSS Phoenix’s patients. Especially critically injured and thus traumatized personnel reacted negatively to a construct lacking empathy and emotion in charge of their security.

Since the Security Unit did a good job a redeployment was discussed and finally decided. Without any major tweaks “DSU Vindex” was transported and stationed upon the Exodus where it serves the internal Security Department up to this day.

What do you like about this character? I like the simple idea of playing an artificial being. I played station-bound Cyborgs before but I disliked the fact that someone could just hack a door and change the way I am supposed to behave. Or change who I should prioritize.

As an IPC I can play a comparably robotic Security Officer, that’s sole purpose is to uphold the stations security and protect the crewmembers in disregard of personal emotions.

I do not intend to play them in an entirely robotic manner. “DSU Vindex” will be able to chat and properly interact, should it be approached and the situation allow it. It just won’t develop relations - be it negative or positive.

How would you rate your role-playing ability? 7/10, assuming 5 is the average. I sure had days where my RP has been subpar, or where I was too lazy to emote. Especially when things get hectic or when the general situation didn't allow. Overall I try to not fall out of character and think I've been able to do so in the past.

Notes: Since this is my first Whitelist Application, I appreciate both; constructive criticism and personal opinions. Thanks for reading this.

+1, Lowe is one of the people that pops into my head when I think of Aurora, especially roboticist, and any time I've RP'd with them or seen them in an RP situation, they've always done a pretty extraordinary job. I've got no doubt in my mind that they'd be able to roleplay an IPC very well.

Thuy Huang is such a fun spontaneous character to interact with, while Kim Lowe is a more serious hardworking but fun loving individual. Lia is a relative newcomer to your roster and is looking to be as pleasant as your other characters. Your RP skill is solid and you're a pleasant person to talk to in and out of game.

As for the actual app I like the backstory and it seems to fit the robotic nature of the character. I'd like to see more robotic robots in our midst as opposed to humans in chasis. You've put in a lot of thought for how the IPC will act and react around the situtations, and seem to have put in a lot of thought for how synthetics should work in general. It's nice to see that you genuinely care how a synthetic would act, even telling us speech patterns a human would have that your character would not. You really seem to take this serious and I like that a lot.

+1

First things first, i always throughly enjoy rounds where i get to work with play with Lualyrr at robotics, though i haven't interacted too much with either Thuy or Lia, i can already assume from what i've seen that they're as deep and friendly characters, to an extent of course.

Asides from OOC fuckery and other characters, this idea sounds dull in my opinion, but i know that Lua will do something that will turn it interesting to interact with. To add to all of this, we could really use some more officers with less attitude, this won't be a character that will have a lot of friends/relationships with the crew, quite the oposite rather, but reading about how interested is the player in sending their synthetic to robotics for checks (whenever the antag/graytide of the hour isn't killing someone) sounds like a plus for everyone, seeing how boring can both the security officer and roboticist roll get if the rounds goes slow, so they offer more oportunities to RP with without too much feelings (or feelings at all) still.

All and all, i trust that Lualyrr will be capable of handling the whitelist accordly without a problem.

+1 from me!

I've been enjoying roleplaying with Lualyrr for quite some times now, or atleast with Kim Lowe.

As Dragonspare said, the idea may sounds dull at first, but if you think about it, IPCs (unlike Human, Skrellian, Unathi, Tajaran, Etc...) and especially Industrial one, aren't usually made to be "super original". They're made to fulfill their work.

I'm certain they'll be able to pull it off like a charm, as from previous discussions I had with them, they're sharing the same view on robotic, in a "Cold machine" manners.

I have extensively RPed with Lualyrr, mainly when she is playing Kim Lowe, and all of my interactions with the character have been pleasant. She is an extraordinary RPer. 7/10 is an understatement. She has also RPed a lot with synthetics, because Lowe is a roboticist, and I am very interested to see how well she will do when she is playing the robot. No doubt, she will do amazingly well.

The robot itself sounds interesting, and in a sweet spot. My favourite part of the application has to be "I do not intend to play them in an entirely robotic manner. “DSU Vindex” will be able to chat and properly interact, should it be approached and the situation allow it. It just won’t develop relations - be it negative or positive.". I am glad we are getting some actually robotic robots, and this one sounds like it will be interesting to RP with, as if I could ask it a question, and it would try to act humanish, but it is really a cold, robotic response.

+1 so many times over.

Primarily for the fact that I've seen Lualyrr in all of the characters, but never once realized who played them until I've seen them here, shows they're able to perform as a variety of different characters, without it seeming like they're played by the same person.

That to me shows some remarkable skill in roleplaying, so I'm lending my +1 for this.

The appeal of IPCs for me also lies in the grey space between humans and robots. The definitions of what is real and what is synthesized work best when blurry in our weird sci-fantasy, in my opinion, but it's nice (and somewhat rare) to see someone lean on the robotic half of that rather than the human one.

There are plenty of people who attempt to RP a synthetic character divested from emotional investment or persistent relations. It is a surprisingly challenging thing for many (also something I'm not sure I could manage entirely), but Lualyrr I believe will be able to do so convincingly. The player is a strong writer who places plenty of thought into the synthetic condition, and I believe they'd make good use of the whitelist.

Vindex's story is sufficiently thought out and not needlessly overblown. I look forward to seeing it around!

I enjoy this application overall, but I noticed a few different small things that may be wrong with it.

To start out with what I like, i'm glad to see more and more people start roleplaying IPC's in a more "You know what, imma robot, not a human in a robot suit". Though I don't hate people who like to play a more organic feeling IPC, its a real nice change of pace!

Onto the only flaws I can really see. The application is a little short, but thats not always a bad thing. I am not 100% sure, but from what i've read about most of the corporate lore, Nanotrasen never really tried to build synthetics, they were much more focused on their new-found discovery of Phoron and blue-space travel. Usually in those types of situations its best to try changing the lore of major corporations, and instead just create a small company of your own. (Though, it isn't completely unbelieveable, as it never really states Nanotrasen completely refused to build synthetics.)

Overall, from me this is a +1. I am more than happy to indoctornate have more people in the synthetic master race playerbase.

So to touch on the OOC parts. I think Lualyrr is a good member of this community with characters that are enjoyable to play with from the OOC level, and as a person that was helping them with their application prior, I can tell with certainty they've put a lot of thought and time into this, while it may not entirely translate into this application, a lot of thought was put in how they'd be on the station.

Now onto the IC side of things. There's nothing better to me than a normal and basic background story that isn't pushed to the extremes of the realistic limits we have for synthetics. It's short and sweet, conveying all that is needed and I like it. The fact it is acknowledged by yourself that while they don't feel emotion, synthetics can however simulate it is another good point.

So all in all, you get a +1 from me.
