Fire and Glory Posted July 12, 2017 Posted July 12, 2017 Say the spooky scary traitor gets you in a neck grab and drags you in maintenance, lets say it's dark, he whispers a few sexy things to you, then he starts choking you. If there are no sources of light, you will not know you're being choked until your indicator tells you you can't breathe, and even then, you don't know if things are just vented or if it is actually him. Or maybe you won't know about it if you're blind. I don't know if this applies there too. Thus, I propose that when someone is getting strangled with big meaty fists and the like, the victim gets a nice red message like, You're being strangled! Or something else. Howzzat?
Kaed Posted July 12, 2017 Posted July 12, 2017 Golly, and here I thought the big red message about being neck grabbed, the gasping emotes, and the obvious damage you start taking were signs enough. I guess I didn't realize being strangled is so poorly telegraphed. >_>
Fire and Glory Posted July 13, 2017 Author Posted July 13, 2017 It only shows up if you can see, Kaed . Theoretically if someone wearing night vision ran up to me in pitch-black maint, grabbed me and upgraded his grab twice and then started choking me, I would not receive any messages. I decided to check and I found this also applies to blind people. Gasping emotes only tell me I can't breathe, for all I know someone broke a window.
sonicgotnuked Posted July 13, 2017 Posted July 13, 2017 Oh boy, do I smell memes with force gloves and strangling ERT somehow through thick voidsuits? Anyhow, yeah, I would like my victems who I strangle in the prison bathrooms to see big text to show that they are fucked.
Garnascus Posted July 13, 2017 Posted July 13, 2017 Seems like a reasonable change to me. I honestly didnt know that the messages do not show up if you cannot see.
Kaed Posted July 14, 2017 Posted July 14, 2017 Actually, according to a test me and Lohikar did, it has nothing to do with whether or not you can see. The lack of ability to see messages is entirely based on the current light level - your ability to see with night vision or anything else is completely irrelevant. He also said the fix would be difficult and probably involve rewriting darkness code. (maybe you can fix tajaran night vision during that time too)
Scheveningen Posted July 14, 2017 Posted July 14, 2017 I believe you may have misconstrued what Lohikar said, because I don't think he would've made that conclusion. Blindness completely disables your ability to get any feedback in the textport from actions, emotes or anything that isn't a sound that your character would normally view, provided you aren't also deafened. Meaning if you cannot see at all due to an in-game disability, you strangely enough cannot see who is hitting you, who is emoting, or whatever else. Being in pitch black however, at a good enough distance and not including those with actual darksight or night vision capabilities, has the adverse effect of making them out of your line of sight.

The testing I did with Kaedwuff resulted in messages being squelched whenever the attacker was in darkness; ignoring the victim's vision flags, dark sight value, or eyewear (NVG). Blindness also will squelch the messages, but through a different mechanism. I can't say for sure that it's tied to the lighting engine's brightness, but it seems likely from what limited testing we did.
Fire and Glory Posted July 14, 2017 Author Posted July 14, 2017 My NVG example was mostly a construct that'd allow someone to practically do grappling with someone who cannot see in the dark. However, if darkness completely strangles messages and you cannot do something along the lines of "am I being strangled, if yes, give me this message" then it is probably more trouble than it is worth.
DatBerry Posted July 14, 2017 Posted July 14, 2017 another thing would be covering eyes, you would still feel his hands gripping your neck when your eyes are covered or if your character is blind.

The reasons for why you can't see certain emotes tend to be one, the other, or both applying at the same time (relating to darksight, physical blindness, or both). It makes sense if you cannot see who is choking you in the dark, in terms of being able to see an aggressor, I suppose. Moreso if your eyes are crippled or atrophied. It's probably not worth touching darksight or whatever. A simple "You're being choked!" notifier to the victim is good enough. And maybe the person doing the choking should have red text messages pop up periodically that they are throttling a person by the throat (provided they can be seen, in the dark or not), since choking someone to death is not exactly subtle.
