How long have you been playing on Aurora?: April/May of 2017

Why do you wish to be on the whitelist?: There's a severe lack of HoS currently, and I wanna play IAA with Pikl.

Why did you come to Aurora?: HRP is hard to come by. Aurora isn't entirely my cup of tea, as my cup of tea is 24/7 extended with a small community and plenty of ERP. But that being said, it's the second best thing. The community, for the most part, is welcoming enough. I love the gameplay, it feels nice to me, a bit laggy, but hey, that's how it is when the pop is this high. Also, BlueSec. I really like BlueSec.

Have you read the Aurora wiki on the head roles and qualifications you plan on playing?: Yes.

Please provide well articulated answers to the following questions in a paragraph each.

Give a definition of what you think roleplay is, and should be about: Roleplay here should, in my mind, be about blending believability and realism. Characters are grounded in the universe set up by the lore, but can, somewhat, diverge from this.

What do you think the OOC purpose of a Head of Staff is, ingame?: Handling of 'IC issues' on station and acting in a manner that is exemplary of proper RP and player etiquette.

What do you think the OOC responsibilities of Whitelisted players are to other players, and how would you strive to uphold them?: Whitelisted, in the sense of Heads, exist to control Departments, and are expected to understand said department. They have a responsibility to know what they are doing, and not pass along wrong information or abuse the position. Heads of Staff, ideally, should be working to better their department.

Please pick one of your characters for this section, and provide well articulated responses to the following questions.

Character name: Harry Entfield

Character age: 47

Please provide a short biography of this character (approx 2 paragraphs):

Born 2413, Mendell City, to Franklin Entfield, MCPD Law Enforcement Officer and Mary Entfield, MC Public Library Librarian. First born, followed by sister Anne and brother Charles. Attended St.Rosalind Secondary School, was Linebacker on Football team. Below average grades. Lost friend in car accident related to DUI. Graduates High School in 2431, barely. Attended MCPD College, graduated 2433. Little of note during this time outside of meeting future wife Yukio Satawa.

Works with MCPD for 10 years, before applying for Security Officer position with NT in 2443.Works as Security Officer for 5 years before taking 2 years in order to gain degrees necessary for Warden occupation. Spends 10 years as Warden before receiving promotion to Head of Security.

What do you like about this character?: I like that he isn't really something special, he's just a guy who has gone through life.

What do you dislike about this character?: He's new to the occupation. He is only now, in the [CURRENT YEAR] been promoted to the title of Head of Security. I also dislike that he's generally just a normal guy. You'd think that after 47 years of breathing, something would be noteworthy.

What do you think makes this character fit to be a head of staff?: Well, he's got years of experience in Security work, and he's shown commitment to NT.

Please provide well articulated answers to the following questions.

How would you rate your own roleplaying?: 7/10. Not going to pretend I'm the best out there. It's hard to get big into on-station RP when you're being accosted every five minutes by, [Common] John Doe says, "Security-- help!". I enjoy Discord RP though.

Extra notes:

Not big on writing paragraphs for questions I feel I can answer with a sentence. I don't like adding fluff to what I say. I'll probably have to edit this thing later. I dunno, I think it's good. Also, if this isn't pressed through, I'm going to beat up anyone who gave me -1s.

+1 overall, based on tangential, but positive, interaction with Carmichael. The RP is there as is the knowhow.

I'm just curious though, why not continue Carmichael's story instead of developing a new character? Obviously you are not the first to do this in an app nor will you be the last, but I do see it often that a new character is introduced in a whitelist app. (my apologies if you've played Harry before, he's not listed on your active characters)

Also, you like that Harry's not anything special... and dislike that also? Am I reading that right? I can understand if you mean it is a double-edged sword, I suppose.

Yeah, pretty much. And I suppose I could work with Carmichael there, but he is really just a mess falling apart rapidly without much of a support. So him as a HoS is probably the last thing that would be allowed to happen. Especially with his record. I think a fresh new face is good too. I might change the names. I want more Chinese aboard to represent the massive Chinese population that is under represented.

Thanks, by the way.

I'm. Really, really against Carmichael, as a character, becoming a HoS. He's a good foil character, because he's great at regulations and the like, but I feel like he lacks that sense of "when to get shit done"-ness that the other Head of Security's have. On the flipside, I think Amory gets heated as a player, but is overall a good one, and can probably pull of a Head of Security reasonably. I also think that if he played IAA, he'd be really fucking good at it. I'll give a tentative +1.

P.S.:

Short, to the point, nothing extra but nothing important detracted either.

I agree with Xander that I wish for biography to be explanded, providing a shorty story or a timeline of life events does involve our decision making process as we can often tell if a character would be good/bad for a role depending on their personality.

Further i have a question it is a tricky one and you are free to not answer it if you don't feel like it, but.

What do you think takes precedence, player freedom or in-game regulations? Or some kind of mixture of the two?

Player freedom is important, and the good player is able to set their character up inside the regulations, and not require much stray from them. Honestly though, regulations go out the window half way through most rounds. I think regulations are more important. Freedom as I see it on the server leads to anarchy. And then no one but those willing to kill or fight are having fun preying on those who do not.

I, personally, enjoy having to create fun while playing as a straight-laced regulation minded Security Officer. It demands creativity, and a true understanding of you wanting fun and your character wanting fun. I dunno, I wrote this organically. I hope it's a good answer.

Overall meh. I would +1 the player because they have demonstrated their capability to roleplay, but +/-0 the proposed character because it's intentionally bland and lacking in actual character. I would -1 Daniel Carmichael the character becoming HoS without some serious development to make him more fitting for the role.

That said, I will have to -1 based on the chance that you back-door Carmichael into Command through a featureless proxy without actually having him develop to suit the role, regardless of whether or not that's your intent; eventually there will be a HoS slot open, and no officers, when you want to play Carmichael.

Did this not answer that? Why would I purposely put a character that is too young and not designed for the role into the role without a massive overhaul?

Edit: I'm offended that you would suggest I was doing this to get that character into the position of HoS. I think it is disgusting to implicate that I would actually 'backdoor' him in, especially when you haven't seemingly read the rest of the replies and comments.

This doesn't seem like a complete or satisfactory answer to me. Can you expand on this? What does 'control' mean to you? Do Heads have any OOC responsibility outside of knowing what a department is capable of?

In the context of the question, you are being asked what your responsibilities are to other players. What would those people playing characters look to you for?

Control to me is keeping the people below you in line and striving towards the same objective. Overall, the objective is a HRP environment, and for Security specifically it's being able to handle the antagonists in a reasonable manner. Making sure the Officers aren't trying to decap the Wizard who just arrived and wishes to speak to the Captain. Making sure they aren't arguing to the point of there being no teamwork and acting in a self-destructive manner.

Very much so do Heads have an OOC responsibility to enforce a standard on those below them, otherwise everything would have to be handed off to the Mods. Minor things, like drinking on the job, getting into a minor RP spurred fight- these are IC, which Heads handle, drinking to kill one's character or getting in completely unjustified fights in order to kill others is OOC. My responsibility to other players is to keep everyone in a straight line, but still allow there to be fun stuff going on. Heads are there to direct those below them. This can be done from afar or from the front. Either or, as long as they are directing them. At least, that's what I think.
