  1. Hi Kyres! During my time as deputy, you've been such a valuable resource and treasured friend who helped me put my thoughts into order and turn the vague gibbering I usually output into something comprehensible and workable. I'm not going to ask questions because Caelphon has that angle COVERED, but I am going to offer my whole biased friendship endorsement. Historically, you've been very good at keeping the lore moving with new ideas and such, I have no reason to doubt you'll bring that with you to the deputy position. Though I also saw you rubbed a few people the wrong way. Maybe an assurance that things won't go awry in the personal working relationship front will be appreciated? You're good at motivating people to work together (king of the world arc) so I think you'll do just fine. Best of luck.
  2. Hi! I'm liking the application so far but I'm curious about a couple of things: How does it affect Ella when she runs up against the inevitability of someone not liking her? Even the most well-intentioned and kind person will encounter people who don't like them. Presumably, this must have happened at least once in her year-long life working on a NanoTrasen facility or it will eventually happen in future. How might Ella respond to this in the face of her own risk-analysis? Does she ever consider the certainty of meeting someone who doesn't like her despite doing her best to ensure it doesn't happen? I worry a little that you might be writing yourself into a corner with a character that "only researches". It's difficult to roleplay a character with a one-dimensional personality like that, and I'd like to know what sort of plans you have for developing this character. I assume of course you have an idea on how Ella might branch out in future, with a year being a long enough to for her to consider deviating slightly. You don't need to tell me in-detail, as I expect you'll want to leave this up to IC interactions to decide, but how might you see her developing, theoretically?

Talk.NT Message Board 1711 | My Account | (0) New Messages | Affiliates | Help TOP page > General Discussion > Synthetic > New borg brain announcement Posted by: galaxyBrian - 06/06/2463 - 03:20 mornin fellas! friend at work told me about this new thing that zeng and heph has been putting together. some sort of new brain or something to replace the old mmi tech everyones been relying on forever. probably about time they did it, link here if you want to read the article yourself but i put all the best bits below interesting stuff!! i know @circuitdoc might be able to weigh in right? --------------- Reply from: ddddd - 06/06/2463 - 03:21 Wtf Why Are You Awake At 3AM Go To Bed LOL --------------- Reply from: ghostinthemachine22 - 06/06/2463 - 03:28 >Wtf Why Are You Awake At 3AM Go To Bed LOL it's only 3am where YOu are moron. they might be on a totally different timezone, or planet! good post btw OP. I saw some ZH trucks pulling up near a factory near where I work and I know they have borgs there so they must be rolling this out already --------------- Reply from: circuitdoc - 06/06/2463 - 03:40 This is actually really interesting! The old MMI design suffered from what we'd call "rot" which was as gross as it sounds - the brain being exposed to the air like it was meant it would begin to literally rot over time. The old cradles would pump some preservation fluid in but it's never been perfect, you would not BELIEVE the stench if you open a cyborg that's not been maintened for long enough (refilling fluid and cleaning the brain were a part of the job). Basically, a fully-enclosed solution has been a long time coming, but I've ranted about that enough in the past haha. Interesting to see them rolling out the upgrades for free, but these things never are. I did a quick search and the ZH fluid they're using is SUPER proprietary, and expensive. This is how they'll make their money on this, I'll even put credits on that being the case. REALLY interesting is that brains don't appear to need lobotomising any more? The suppression of memories is handled by an onboard processor and the diodes (for interfacing with the brain) are sunk into the greymatter almost automatically. This should make the job a lot easier. --------------- Reply from: galaxyBrian - 06/06/2463 - 12:52 >it's only 3am where YOu are moron. they might be on a totally different timezone, or planet! no i was posting at 3am LMAO --------------- BACK TO TOP

  5. Canon: Canon Event Type: Lance Sweep Event Scale: Small Assigned Admin: ShesTrying OOC Event Description : Following the closure of the war between Sol and Tau Ceti, the people at Ceres’ Lance have once again turned their attention inwards. They were on the TC-side of the fence during the conflict and have opted to remain for the duration of their contract - and in doing so become more and more entrenched within the NanoTrasen corporate umbrella. Fully aware of the chaos that the conflict brings, the brass at the Lance have decided it’s been time enough for another sweep, the goal being to catch any untagged shells and illegal IPCs that may have slipped the net. As with other sweeps, any IPCs without tags will be charged with being an unregistered positronic and be immediately retagged. The Lancers will work with the on-station security team to make sure this is done. Units MAY be squirreled away to be quizzed about other untagged positronics if there’s reasonable suspicion that they may know of any. The sweep went off without a hitch, with cooperation from nearly all station staff. Security stepped up to assist a very thin-on-the-ground Lancer team, and most crewmembers were tested. It was revealed that the bartender on shift was hiding on station as an untagged shell, claiming to have been untagged and modified by a "friend". The unit was taken into custody by the Ceres' Lance without incident. Crew may see Ceres' Lance operatives on station in their day to day, as the confirmation of hidden shells has drawn their attention to the sector. Ceres' Lance characters played by approved event players may occasionally drop in on random rounds as visitors. Please keep an eye out for them! Who knows about it : Anyone paying attention to Ceres' Lance in the news may know the sweeps have started again. Host/participants : Tailson(Ceres' Lance Researcher Giselle Royce), Other Lancers (unconfirmed)
  6. BYOND key: Tailson Discord name/id: Chris#9941 Borg / AI names: Borg: Brunton, ASSIST | AI: Harmony, Glow Have you read the Aurora wiki page about the AI?: Yes Why do you wish to be on the whitelist?: I've mained AI for as long as I can remember. I'd be a little lost if I couldn't any more. Have you received any administrative actions? And how serious were they? When I first played AI ever I think I ghosted instead of wiping the core. Didn't know there was an option at the time. Do you understand your whitelist is not permanent, and may be stripped following continuous administrative action? Yep!
  7. Capesh has a very important point that should be considered. I read this thread before and for some reason never noticed. Interpreted correctly the 4th law should be used to prevent any and all conflict that could hurt any being capable of acting with appropriate judgement. This would mean stopping fights, getting in security's way, etc. There isn't a clause in there for exceptions, so even if someone has murdered 20 crew, the AI must still safeguard them from security's attempts to harm them. Limiting it to manifested station crew would work just fine. Maybe even include "and those designated by command staff" as a caveat in the case of visitors etc.
  8. KONYANG SECEDES! After a five-day long period of silence following the departure of the 58th Fleet from the system, officials within the government have managed to reestablish contact with the colony of Konyang. In a shocking announcement, the planet announced its full secession from the Alliance and proclaimed itself as a sovereign state. Shortly afterwards, many other Outer Colonies planets followed suit, declaring their own independence. Spokesperson for the new Konyang government, Gwok-0783 released a statement regarding the secession. “It is with a heavy heart that we announce our secession from the Sol Alliance. While we sympathize with the suffering of our former countrymen, especially those still on Mars, it is clear that their sympathies do not lie with us. Having been plundered and abandoned by the Alliance, we have no recourse but to break with it and move forward as a free and independent Konyang.” Although the proclamation has been met with popular support throughout Konyang and the Outer Colonies, and widespread anger in the Alliance parliament, many questions remain for the young state which, in its own words, promises to be “more free and more just” than the government it seceded from. Notably, the Konyanger government has broken from several long standing policies including the treatment of synthetics and, as the newly-formed government states, “In the hopes of fostering goodwill,” has chosen to instate a policy of total equality. Currently, the government is shared between corporate representatives, freed IPCs, and local Konyang settlers. This announcement comes in the wake of its abandonment by the 58th Fleet, which left the system after seizing most of its phoron reserves. Reports indicate that similar actions were taken by the garrisons of neighboring systems, with the area being depleted of its resources. Einstein Engines has reportedly pulled several high level executives from the area for their own safety. Several Einstein affiliates—including Terraneus Diagnostics—have announced that they will continue to operate. Many suspect that the humanitarian crisis in Sol has spread to the Outer Colonies, with bordering Coalition systems reporting a massive influx of refugees from the unstable sector, often arriving in disabled and damaged ships and reporting tales of frequent conflict between the myriad groups in the region.
  9. MIRACULOUS MARS ARCOLOGY RESCUE! 340 survivors were today rescued from the ruins of the collapsed Aoina arcology several days after the catastrophe originating from the planet's Southern pole decimated a large portion of the red planet's surface. Search teams continued their hunt in the wake of the disaster and were alerted to the presence of survivors by a repeating message broadcast over wide-spectrum radio bands. Upon arrival to the site - thought to have been completely lost - rescuers arrived to find a section of the arcology operational and sealed to the outside environment, being tended to by around twenty arcology-assigned cyborg units. The temporary protector of the site introduced itself as Arcology Administrator Gamma Sigma Zero Five (ArcAdmin γΣ-05) and went on to explain that, by pure chance, their AI core avoided destruction in the initial collapse of the arcology and was protected from the concussive blasts by the rubble. It had mobilised all operational units in order to protect what residents remained in the Aoina arcology, and it was the AI that was broadcasting a request for assistance. Among those rescued was 38 year-old Amin Perincek and her three children - aged 3, 7, and 10 years old - kept inside the arcology freezer complex, usually reserved for storing perishable food supplies. "We were trapped with a smaller group and swore we were done for, I was about to start sayin' my hellos to the heavens when one of them colony robots cut into where we were stuck. It didn't say much, but it told us to follow, and showed us to the freezers here." Of the 340 survivors, 202 required urgent medical attention, and have been rushed to nearby functional hospitals, already flooded with patients. Arcology Administrator Gamma Sigma Zero Five stated that it will simply continue to search the ruins of the arcology until power is depleted, at which point it will enter a low-power state with its assigned units and await recovery. Officials cannot say when this might be.
  10. Hi Trinvo, thanks for reapplying! It's a very strong application this time and I'm happy with what I'm seeing. I would be remiss if I didn't ask a question or two, though, so here we go. CORK-13 seemed happy about being sold and clearly had a very close working relationship with the chief medical officer at their Oran facility. Could you go more into the reasons CORK-13 was so eager to be sold? You mentioned it being a 'better place for specimens', could you elaborate on this? Also, touching on the apparent lack of desire to be a truly free IPC and instead seeming content to be owned by a corporation would be great. All in all, it's a very good app. I think dropping the IRU prefix and all of the requirements that comes with that has done wonders for your creative freedom here.
  11. I like these changes a lot. Will they work with Geeves' radio jammer changes and disallow door bolting in the range of one of these? https://github.com/Aurorastation/Aurora.3/pull/10246
  12. Okay so, I just want to start out by explaining that I think this is a horrible, dreadful, awful idea. It's unjustly limiting and addresses a problem that, as far as I'm aware, doesn't even exist. You don't need to perform arbitrary nerfs in order to buff something else. The laws thing - you won't be able to hurt anyone with antimov laws and such. "They shouldn't anyway" isn't a correct justification of this, as it's definitely an antag action to load an AI with those laws in the first place. No AI is getting banned for carrying out what their laws say. Not following the laws after an antag has gone to the trouble of changing them is actually worse as it's considered rules lawyering to get out of those situations that way. Also if a law says it overrides the others, it does, even if the law would normally break the others. So far this looks like a PR designed to eliminate a problem I haven't seen happening. I've not had any major complaints about borg play, and as far as I can tell people aren't generally upset with how borgs are played by people. All this PR looks to do is limit people who play borgs even more when they really, really don't need that. No other role on the station is mechanically prevented from harming crewmembers because it's absurd to do that. You argue that lawsets are "already pretty darn restricting" and then try to restrict them further? Why? You don't need to merge this to implement improvements to borgs. There is absolutely nothing preventing that from happening. A borg having a better screwdriver doesn't mean they shouldn't be able to use it for evil - server rules do that just fine. It should go without saying that if a borg is validhunting then.... Ahelp them? Validhunting is specifically against the server rules, and it's not just borgs that do it. So, in conclusion, this is a dreadful idea. No. I hate it so much.
  13. Hi Trinvo! I'm curious about this character. It looks like you've written them to be a sort of "blank slate" character in terms of things they know, people they associate with, etc. This is absolutely fine, and I'm personally a big fan of naïve IPCs. However, I feel like you could expand a little on Barnabey's personal opinion on its situation. You've expanded a lot on what this character is (thank you for that!) but you've not touched on who they are, which I always argue is more important. Don't feel like you have to limit yourself to two paragraphs in the character description; that's just a minimum. If you could go into who this character is, what they think, how they think, their opinions on others and what they think of their assignment with NT - Do they like the corporation? Do they like working in the bar? Do they dream for something more or are they content? Go into as much detail as you can! So far you've demonstrated that you can come up with a concept for a character, so please could you develop the character into someone I might find myself interacting with in future? Motivations, personal objectives, hobbies and things that bring them joy. Things they like and hate. These are what make a character interesting. People are a product of their past experiences, and I would argue that by making your character extremely young you've given yourself a difficult job of defining a personality, as there's not much of a past to draw from, so I'm interested in what you come up with. Looking forward to your response!
  14. I completely agree with Zyrus. I understand that this has been abused, and that it's still very much open to abuse. I'm actually in favour of removing it because I don't feel like it adds much to the AI as a toolset. I'll miss being able to set up the engine on lowpop with no engineers, but it's not like we haven't been dealing with that problem forever before the mech was added, so that's fine. HOWEVER: What I do have an issue with though is this and the mindset behind it. In a classic case of the bad ones ruining it for the class, the AI has been subjected to a continuing array of nerfs in an attempt to 'reel them in' because of a few instances of bad AI play. Malf was basically soft removed, door bolting is gone, now the mech is disappearing. It feels like the goal is to just reduce the appeal of playing AI so much that it can be reasonable to remove it because nobody enjoys it any more. I want to clarify that nobody has said this outright, this is just how it feels to me. Call me biased, because that's definitely the case. I've been playing AI for literally years on this server at this point and my interest in joining the lore team stemmed from my interest in AIs as a sci fi trope. It's so frustrating to see my favourite role eroded time and again because some people won't play nice. Start handing out warnings and bans for bad AI play, stop penalising everyone for the bad actions of a few.
  15. Isn't the minigun 50TC? That's pretty much a gimmick choice on its own, as the nuke should be. Maybe instead of removal, make it a purchasable item that's priced outside of the ability to have more than one so they have to commit, like Doxx said?
  16. I've flip-flopped back and forth while reading this between righteous indignation and righteous agreement. The truth of the matter is that AIs are a difficult thing to balance based purely on the logic of knowledge = power and these guys can see everything. I agree that they have the ability to shut down antag gimmicks. That said; so does any other role. A gunshot to the head is perhaps more effective at stopping an antagonist than a bolted door, so some amount of restraint from the AI player is definitely expected. THAT SAID I'm not entirely in favour of keeping bolting and shocking in, either. Bolting has problems which we all agree are there. Shocking it pants and should go away unless you're malf or whatever. That's a given. I've always been in favour of the AI being tucked behind the command whitelist. It carries the same responsibility as a command member (make sure the round progresses for everyone) so I don't see why this wouldn't be common sense. This has been repeatedly shot down as an option so I'm not going to argue for it any longer. Is it possible at all to assign abilities to a law card? Maybe when programming the laws, there are options for softlocking vs. hardlocking, shock vs. no shock, etc. This would give malf the abilities back (as all restrictions are removed, of course. Maybe make it a researched ability) and will give more power to purged and more aggressive lawsets (NT Aggressive and Quarantine spring to mind). What if the bolt ability is replaced with a softbolt? The door turns red indicating that the door shouldn't be opened. Players can still left-click on the door to open it, but it won't respond to someone bumping up against it/walking into it, meaning they need to make a conscious decision to open the door against AI recommendation. As it stands, removing these abilities will make regular AIs no less helpful than before and will remove that no-choice doorbolting thing, which is definitely a good move. However, not allowing purged, malf or aggressive AIs to bolt and shock will be detrimental, I think. If command decides that the AI needs to be more aggressive, the decision is their's whether they head down to the core and change the AI's behaviour themselves using the law cards. As an aside, I love the mechs thing. Maybe we can get holo on the holodeck soon, too? Hardlight for hugs and lasertag? (Hardlight for public malf beatings?) Obviously, everything I suggest will require coders and I don't know what level of shit the AI code is currently at (I assume 'catastrophic') so grain of salt time pls. I'm just an ideas guy. Uh, so, TL;DR: Bolts and shock normally bad, agree Bolts and shock when malf or aggressive? Probably yes ok Maybe two types of bolt: "Please don't open" but click to open anyway; and proper bolts Lawset cards have different rules maybe? Vroom vroom mechs
  17. My goddamn head. ?
  18. Oh my god that's extremely high praise from people I respect so much. :-: Mechanics aside, I feel like lawed synthetics sort of "know their lot", whereas IPCs don't seem to have that same thing to them. I'm aware owned IPCs exist, of course, but they always struck me as a group trying to find their place in a world that might not want them. I think the key difference is that: Their outlook on who they are and where they belong.
  19. I was hedging on the luck and chance bit, maybe the result of a small trash avalanche (trashalanche) jostling it around enough to start it up/knock it out of standby mode. I understand the likelihood of that is terribly low, which I feel adds a little bittersweet luck to and otherwise extremely unlucky robot.
  20. BYOND Key: Tailson Character Names: Rex Winters, Kere'Selsh Qorina, Byron Reichard, Margaret Stainforth, Harmony, Brunton, PocketBuddy 2.0, Giselle Royce, Geraldine Schofield, Henry Weeter Species you are applying to play: IPC What color do you plan on making your first alien character: Exempt! Have you read our lore section's page on this species?: Back to front. Please provide well articulated answers to the following questions in a paragraph format. One paragraph minimum per question. Why do you wish to play this specific race: (One paragraph minimum) It's probably clear to most people that I thoroughly enjoy playing synthetic characters, Harmony, Brunton and PocketBuddy 2.0 making up a considerable amount of my total time playing on Aurora. I get the feeling that due to my frequency playing synthetic characters it was never considered that I wouldn't have the synth whitelist. Uh, well, surprise! I've always been happy to play stationbounds and AIs over IPCs due to me lacking a fun and convincing concept for an IPC character that I would enjoy playing on station. With me getting the Deputy position I've gone and devoted the time and energy to making that IPC character, something that I've been threatening to do for a long time. Identify what makes role-playing this species different than role-playing a Human: Renewed suspicion due to the SLF arc has, I assume, made playing IPC something of a sordid affair. There's always going to be people who adore their synthetic coworkers, but with that extra hackle-raising experience, especially for characters who were already quite hardline against synthetics, it's probably reinforced their negative views. This is actually something I've always enjoyed about roleplaying synthetics. Not that I have a thing or anything but being treated as a second class citizen (albeit a very helpful one) always seemed to fit being a robot. Mechanics! Big chonky metal, clompy-stompy feet, telly-face, heat management, different dietary needs, and so forth. Whenever I've played my other synth characters, I've enjoyed playing up the mechanical differences as a quirk of the character's personality. There's nothing quite like bullshitting some technical jargon instead of saying "my leg hurts (or at least it would hurt, if I had the capacity to feel pain. Which I don't, but my programming tells me to be personable and personify myself I will)". I'm aware how different mechanics between stationbounds and IPCs are, though perhaps not to the same depth that a player of IPCs would. Looking forward to getting hands on with that. Character Name: Essen Please provide a short backstory for this character Most people wake up to the shrill beeping of their alarm, well aware of their desire to ignore it because they have to go to work. Essen was not so lucky. Woken it was, but by the grinding sound of metal and rust below the treads of a junkyard loading vehicle. No apprehension of the impending work day, no desire to stay in bed, no memory of much at all, sadly. An abandoned mind in an obsolete frame. The first few days for the poor nameless thing were spent wandering its new home, ducking from the large machines that roamed the scrapyard. Before long, it would find itself on the streets, away from the crashing of iron, and now into the care of a group of likeminded fellows living in the slums and alleyways of Mendell City. Life on the streets of the city wasn't particularly easy. Where its companions would steal food, the IPC would scavenge batteries, sneak into buildings to charge, whatever else it took to survive. It was from these companions that Essen learnt the way things are done, giving the thing a skewed view of the world. It was a child from this group of vagrants that eventually gave Essen their name. Right there, on a plate, faded and scratched away from time and neglect, were the letters: S/N. Though not particularly lawful people, but good nontheless, with a strong sense of community and cameraderie. This had the unusual effect of giving Essen the impression that the impoverished and downtrodden were good, helpful, friendly, and those with plenty were cruel, facetious. Unaware, of course, why exactly the IPC was always the first into buildings, the first to make a move... The first to get caught. Given the chance between decommissioning or working back the debt accrued from crimes both real and falsified, Essen has been signed on to work with NanoTrasen as part of its rehabilitation, until such a time that the great debt is deemed paid. What do you like about this character? Sad homeless robot. A once-coyed machine with a strange set of morals and a kinship with people of lower social standing seems interesting to me, since most IPCs are generally owned either by themselves, or by someone many times wealthier than they are. A robot coming from a background of homelessness and petty crime, missing its old family, perhaps unaware it was the fallguy all along strikes me as a fun dynamic. Learning about how the world works outside of the alleys and gutters of the society it "grew up" in. Everyone roots for the underdog. How would you rate your role-playing ability? I usually put 7/10 here because it seems like a decent mix between confidence and humility, but I've been playing for how many years now and haven't ever had a complaint about my roleplay ability so I'm going to say 9/10 because confidence is a drug I just won't quit. Notes: I know I said that I never really felt the desire to play IPC at the beginning of this app, but this character idea has been in my head for nearly a year now so clearly that's not entirely true.
  21. I had to ask, too. Yeah, they sound neat, kinda wish I was around to see them to be honest. Sounds like we're on the same page.
  22. Hi Niennab! I have to say, I miiiiight have started playing/gotten properly involved after they were removed, I don't know what they used to be like! I think maybe I'm a collaborator. I'm happy to bounce ideas around and get to work on projects with someone else. Any project that I start will probably see a lot of feedback because that's how I work, generally. As you outlined it, I'm really happy with what you have so far. It's a good way to work. On that note, what sort of things would you be looking for from a deputy? You say you don't expect deputies to take on projects (though obviously it would be nice), what would be your ideal deputy be?
  23. Oh my goodness Doxx that is incredibly high praise. Onto the questions! My favourite is the Martian borg project. Thousands of people signing up voluntarily during the big Martian project, then the resulting mega scrapyards that dominate entire districts of the red planet. That Wall-E feel with the scrap mountains and canyons. Just the visual aspect of that must be astounding. We often mutter about free synthetic societies, how many shanty towns filled with scrapped cyborgs and IPCs do you think are out there? My least favourite is a more difficult question to answer. I'm actually not too happy with the AI for every situation thing. When I say that, I mean a lot of people take it as read that getting an AI for a facility/business/home is a fairly trivial matter. I can't see it written down anywhere in lore, so I suppose this doesn't count, but I also don't see it written down that it should be prohibitively expensive for anyone but a large, profitable company to get one brought in. I feel it downplays the potential power (and potential power NEEDS) of a stationary AI. I really struggled with the last part of that question. I'm very happy with synthetic lore from where I am, rather than applying to fix anything I'm here to expand on new ideas and fine-tune. I actually really like the idea of the hivebots as an enigmatic enemy, if my little essay wasn't hint enough at that. At the moment (recent buffs notwithstanding) they're like a random event not too different from carp. The potential for a hive intelligence becoming an actual problem is great, and I'd love to play with that idea some more. Who built them? Why do they do what they do? Questions questions. Only ever actually interacted with one glinty member of this faction IC, so it took a bit of prodding for me to look into it and realise that, yes, it's a full faction! With a history! I actually like Golden Deep. I think they're interesting and they fold into the Purpose lore quite well. They're your classic greedy space merchants and they're proud of showing that off. Getting turfed out by business rivals and feeling like a pariah when you move away from the collective is also really interesting (probably my favourite bit). I'd love to see this faction get a little more love - I feel like there's a lot of potential to bring it into the limelight. Also, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k-COG4YTn6M
