  1. I've been working on some concepts for a Bionic Engineer job who acts similar to RnD, in that creating the bodymods would require some sort of research (Hopefully different than with the destructive analyzer), and like the Geneticst in that he was part of Medical as well as research, and was encouraged to develop useful pedestrian bodymods as well as researching more experimental and dangerous bodymods. However, since I've no idea how to code, I lost interest in the idea because it had no final step, and concepts are great and all but less useful than toilet paper without anything to back them up. (At least toilet paper can clean a mess) However, the idea with actually spawning in with bodymods is a bit contentious. With the bodymod system you could arguably ask for custom bodymods, but there's definately no way you could spawn with bodymods that actually give an advantage.
  2. There's a cultural restriction, which is something that shouldn't but can be broken (And I agree with the Inviolate, but breaking the Inviolate shouldn't result in OoC repercussion, but rather IC repercussion from your fellow Vox. If you somehow convince an entire skipjack of Vox to break the cultural laws they've been ingrained with, then power to you.) And then there's a racial restriction, which literally can't be broken out of because it is a biological limit. And in most cases I don't agree with this. Vox being cowardly as a race because of biological limitation is something that I don't support. Vox being subversive and less confrontational because of their culture and their current situation is something I do agree with. So to what I presume you're suggesting with your "small code to prevent them from going balls to the walls" is an in-game mechanic that simulates a biological limitation, such as Dionaea being slow, except in this case somehow making Vox cowardly. I really don't support this. However, if you mean implementing reminders of the Inviolate, or a similar binding cultural code, then I wholeheartedly support that.
  3. BYOND Key:Lord Fowl Character Names:SOLO, Collect, Ohm, The Welfare Engine, Two Birds Beaks Together How long have you been playing on Aurora: Five months or so. Species you are applying to play: Skrell What color do you plan on making your first alien character (Dionaea & IPCs exempt): A dull greyish colour. Perhaps a dull greenish brownish green. Have you read our lore section's page on this species?: Please provide well-articulated answers to the following questions in a paragraph format. One paragraph minimum per question Why do you wish to play this specific race: The Skrell have always interested me, when excluding the IPC and Dionaea race, as rather interesting. Other than the Tajaran and Unathi races that fall into a stereotypical science-fiction race, the Skrell have at least a few aspects that stick out as unique, despite their underdeveloped lore. Identify what makes role-playing this species different than role-playing a Human: The Skrell is unique in that it combines intelligence with a sort of apathy, which while being unlikely the completely emotionless nature of the Diona, is certainly nothing like the exuberance of the other races. The Skrell also particularly strike me as somewhat unrepresented, much like the Unathi or Dionaea. While there a veritable horde of Tajara and IPCs, there tend not to be too many Skrell. Character Name:Zultar Karjei Please provide a short backstory for this character, approximately 2 paragraphs In the glorious city of Eriuyish Zultar Karjei was born from the union of Razi Karjei, a noncommissioned officer within the Skrellian navy, and his sister Oolaie Karjei. Of note in the tale of Zultar Karjei is his own sister, Elisnah Karjei, who unlike, the more scientifically minded Zultar, opted to pursue the more militaristic approach of their own father. As stated, Zultar diverted from this in the typical manner; opting instead to take a course of natural inquiry. Thus, while his sister and much the rest of his kin took the path of their father, Zultar trained in engineering sciences. During the course of his schooling, he ‘learned’ of the corporate space stations (Of course, it is more or less impossible to be unaware of the existence of the corporate spacestation, but rather that during the course of his schooling he became aware of the job opportunity they presented.), and determined that their research environments were statistically superior to the research environments present on Laush V, especially due to the cost of living on Laush V and particularly within Eriuyish. While his parents were not particularly lacking in wealth, given that his mother lived within Eriuyish in the first place, and his parents certainly were arguably altruistic towards their offspring, Zultar was filled with the asinine presumption that as a youth he did not require the assistance of others, especially not of his birthers. So, graduating from the academies of Eriuyish, he was able to get a job on a small, privately owned research station. This surprising offer was, unbeknownst to Zultar, largely due to recommendation from his mother Oolaie. However, upon arriving at the station, he discovered that his intended function was somewhat less than he expected. Serving as a combination lab assistant and maintenance technician, he mostly spent his time repairing pipes and such around the station, or running errands in the lab. Content, however, with being merely adjacent to new and potentially exciting developments in any scientific field whatsoever, he proceeded with this manner of living for some three odd years, eventually gaining more trust until he was trusted to work in the lab of his own initiative. It was during this period of time that he began to research biological engineering. While it is possible that in his time aboard the research station may have developed practical development, his stay was cut short by a workplace accident. On November Eighth, 2442, it is recorded that Zultar lost his entire hand and some of his arm due to carelessness with one of the fabrication machines, and due to the weak immune system of the Skrell, and the ill-equipped medical facility aboard the current domain of work, his entire left arm was amputated, and at a hospital planetside, replaced with a mechanical prosthetic. As the nature of the accident was prompted by carelessness, Zultar was fired. It was for a long duration of time that he was without dedicated occupation, and it was in this span of time that he again was introduced to the altruism of his kin. His sister Elisnah took care of him for this time period, and together they forged a new path in space, seeking occupation. Elisnah deigned to support her brother rather than to enlist within the Skrellian military, as the mobile lifestyle that the military life implied would render such a supporting nature to be highly difficult. With such and such decided, she began to look for more domestic security works, while her brother more or less moped. Forging some modicum of success through her own industry, she was able to gain occupation as a security officer for NanoTrasen, and after some significant persuasion, she was able to convince her formerly enthusiastic and bright kin who was now devolved into a state of utter apathy to do the same, signing as a bio-engineering and medical researcher. With a certain element of peculiar sullenness, he gathered his already developed research, and he and his sister left Laush V to travel to the Tau Ceti system, having been selected for the station NSS Aurora. What do you like about this character?: Kultar displays a most Skrellian nature of inquisition while also portraying a sense of futility induced by prior failure. It is an archetype that is appealing because it is so dynamic. The fate of his existence is a variable that defies prediction, and while this of course applies to many characters, Kultar's dry personality (Which I think I painted quite well with the aesthetic design of his backstory), will perhaps create some unique roleplay situations. How would you rate your role-playing ability? Really, I think it’s gotten better. -100/10. Notes:
  4. Does it being a rare occurrence preclude installing prevention? If Ffrances is correct in saying that the addition is not difficult, then there really isn't a reason not to install it. Not only does it negate admin/mod interference completely in terms of votes (Especially now that there is a "Last Vote" counter), it will handle the scads of new players who simply don't know the ruling of not calling a vote before two hours.
  5. Another problem is people that just don't vote. It's hard to gauge what the 'majority' believe, when a large percentage of people maintain absolute neutrality. (Or worse don't vote but still rage against what was selected and don't ready up because of it.) Also, amusing that in the thread Sound linked, 1138 brought up the nature of majority, and then two months later posts a duplicate thread.

    BATTER UP

Stun baton baseball? Poor child, you think to low. This would add whole new layers to the popular Syndicate Past Time - Energy Sword Toss.
  7. Reporting Personnel: PBU-211 Rank of Reporting Personnel: Spider-bot Personnel Involved: Security Officers Jade Rathel and Centurion Time of Incident: ~15:00 Location of Incident: Fore Hallway leading to Brig Nature of Incident: []Workplace Hazard []Accident/Injury [x]Destruction of Property []Neglect of Duty [x]Harassment [x]Assault []Misconduct []Other _____ Overview of the Incident: Due to a previous workplace accident, I was placed within a spiderbot chasis, I began to walk the station, and in time, came upon the brig. As I was leaving the brig, following an officer so that I may pass through doors unimpeded, I heard her (Jade Rathel) say over her radio headset that she planned to throw me against a wall. I of course questioned her, and as she made increasingly hostile movements, zapped her with a low voltage prod, and attempted to escape. She blocked me and the entire hallway off with two sets of security tape, and proceeded to taunt me. Soon, Centurion came, and assisted in the taunting, eventually pulling out a stun baton and threatening to bludgeon me with it, presumably to death. I, lacking any hope of egress or fair justice, attempted to wrest the stun baton from his hand, with little hope of succeeding owing to my tiny metal fingers, wherein he proceeded to beat me to complete paralysis, destroying completely my spiderbot chasis, which quantified both as a destruction of my property, and severe assault. Did you report it to a Head of Staff or IAA? If so, who?: None were present. Additional notes: Centurion in short displayed either excessive cruelty and inconsideration, presumably believing me to be worthless as a spiderbot, and thus deprived me of my rights as a crewmember, or is excessively itchy on the trigger, and resorted to beating me to utter paralysis in response to an action that wouldn't have been threatening to a fly. Perhaps a combination of both.
  8. What /I/ am asking is just to change the name of the arm blade. I don't really see the issue with Changelings smacking people with large organic sticks (children be damned). The ability can still be called arm blade, because that's a sweet name, but the weapon it spawns should have a more vague name. This would also work to advantage of atmosphere when people see the message logs for the arm blade's attack, if the assault is discovered or blatant.
  9. "Weapon #1 Severity: severe Hits by weapon: 8 Approximate time of wound infliction: 12:47 Affected limbs: chest, head, right arm, left arm Possible weapons: 100% The arm blade" I think that speaks for itself. It's really immersion breaking, compared to this one: "Weapon #2 Severity: severe Hits by weapon: 2 Approximate time of wound infliction: 12:50 Affected limbs: chest, left arm Possible weapons: 100% large organic needle" This message at least gives a sense of mystery, and certainly preserves the aura of immersion.
  10. I understand where you're coming from, but there's no indication that actually dictates ERT, DOs or any other person that's not standard personnel as crew. Now, this doesn't mean the second they step onto the station the AI should label them intruders, or should act against them, and it doesn't mean the AI shouldn't recognize them for what they are. It's merely that the AI isn't bound by law to recognize them as crew. Eight cases out of ten, the ERT's objective will coincide with the AI's, and the ERT's actions will parallel the AI's lawed intents. Most of the time when this does not occur, it's because the AI is malfed/subverted/traitor, which is irrelevant, or the Captain is for some reason against the ERT, which in my opinion could create an interesting scenario. In essence, just because the AI isn't by law explicitly told to obey the ERT, that doesn't mean they should purposefully obstruct them. EDIT: Also, another aspect of disclarity in the AI's laws is that it doesn't define crew at all. So there's actually nothing that says the ERT are or aren't crew, and its up to the AI's interpretation of what crew is. I currently base my interpretations solely off the concrete data present, such as the crew manifest, but its up to the individual player. Again, this doesn't provide the AI excuse to chucklefuck with the crew just because 'lel i'm AI that doesn't define janitor as crew now die.'
  11. I disagree with the third point because I can already see even competent chemists being told no by the CMO and /especially/ the HoS when they try to order it because 'no grenades to dangerous, bad boy'.
  12. If the only reason for a switch is "meh the old colour was getting old" then that means in a while we'll be seeing "meh blue got old", canon.
  13. I beg to differ. There are frequently rounds where security outnumbers many departments, even on traditionally lower tide portions of the day. There are four departments that would need a guard (Cargo, engineering, science, medical.) That means only four security guards are required. Based upon how this would work out, I could see pretty much most rounds having a departmental guard and at least two extra officers.
  14. I've always interpreted that the AI doesn't listen to the orders when it messages CC, merely relays it. And then the Captain verifies the order. There's never been an issue with that interpretation, and the interpretation better matches the lawset provided, which is the only concrete evidence to base an interpretation off of. Now, of course other interpretations can be based off of more company hierarchy integrated AIs, but at that point it eventually just becomes a matter of, well, interpretation.
  15. It's pretty much the same job as any other security officer, just patrolling and guarding a different locale.
  16. I don't want you to write solid laws that the AI must follow. In fact, I quite enjoy the fact that an AI is not bound to such solid laws, and are allowed to interpret them in multiple ways, such as your idea of considering CC crew or not. If the AI's laws were 100% without player interpretation, then the role would feel like slavery both ICly and OoCly.
  17. By its current laws, an AI does not need to listen to ERT. You are correct. Irrelevant of why NanoTrasen did it, it's in the laws, which specifically not only say 'crew', but 'crew of your assigned station', limiting it directly to the NSS Aurora. The AI's highest authority is the Captain. Full stop. Now, the Captain follows the orders of the ERT and CC, so they'll likely order him to order the AI around.
  18. puts roburger in lunchbox. gibs station.
  19. CC is not a member of the crew, eg the AI does not need to listen to them. The AI, by law, is commanded to obey the crew. It can obey anything else at its discretion, however an AI does not need to follow regulations/CC orders unless a member of the crew orders them to.
  20. The suggestion of having departmental guards entails much more than just changed access; it also implies significant modification to the map, adding a security outpost to each department.
  21. At high tide the departmental guard works as expected. However, at low tide it does not necessarily work /worse/ than a regular security division. Remember that a departmental guard has as much access as a regular officer, plus access to their specific department. So they can act as a regular security officer as well if the situation calls for it. This does not limit the actions of a security officer, but merely provides more direction to it.
  22. 1: We're more than a plasma research facility, in fact many occupations on the station are dedicated to researching things that have no relation to plasma. 2: We're not a secret facility, as a nitpick. 3: For variety's sake, OoCly, and ICly it is once again likely for research purpose.
  23. Who says a Robot is old technology? In fact, just by the way it works, one would expect its /new/ technology, perhaps even experimental. Its processors are integrated, which means it can operate without a positronic core or an MMI. That seems an advance in technology, not a step backwards. The fact that it can't be repaired can likely be explained by the fact that its so new methods of repairs haven't really been developed. And, considering we're a research station, it is our job to field experimental technology. There is no indication that a Robot is old technology.
  24. Its the choice they make when they select 'Robot'. It comes with inherent advantages and disadvantages. It can be changed any time by the cyborg player, so if they grow discontent with the disabilities, then they can modify it themselves.
