As a side note; I'll have to find it again, but I remember playing with a voice synthesizer software that was holy-shit good. Like, if I remember correctly it was ACTUALLY good enough to create a synthetic radio host with. But yeah, the bottom line is: I'm confident in the new TTS capabilities that I say we should consider it. I'll be back with samples.

Capn Sperg's IPC application
Killerhurtz replied to TaToBa's topic in Whitelist Applications Archives
That's the thing though. I post here not as a mod, but as a loreperson. People who ruin rounds by accident in engineering are dealt with by moderation - and even then, sometimes, it creates RP. But as a loreperson, my role is to make sure that our lore is respected. That includes making sure that people are informed of the lore, and have the skill to play within it - and to ensure enough consistency in the lore display that new people are not confused. The reason why we ask to put you out there is not "are you popular enough?" but rather "Are you seen as a decent enough roleplayer to be correctly able to represent the lore that we are actively writing"? That being said, your attitude is seriously negative, and I am beginning to weigh against it. However, unless it gets too bad to handle, I will not hold it against you - the same conditions apply, get people to vouch for your capability to roleplay before the deadline. -
SirXenomorph's Skrell Application
Killerhurtz replied to SirXenomorph's topic in Whitelist Applications Archives
Okay, I'll be honest, your app rubs me the wrong way. There's nothing specific, but just generally. THAT BEING SAID, I'm not going to weigh in. Your application has been looked at, and while there's a few changes that will need to be done in regards to the technology, the basic backstory is acceptable. I will leave this application open until February 18th, 6PM PST approximately. Until that time, you are encouraged to post, once per round, a link to this chat in the OOC channel on the server in order to get people to vouch for your roleplaying ability and character. Should you get no comment by then, the application will automatically be denied. Once the deadline arrives, I will be passing judgement on it. Best of luck. -
Capn Sperg's IPC application
Killerhurtz replied to TaToBa's topic in Whitelist Applications Archives
I'm giving you an extension - don't forget to advertise in OOC once per round (and give a link - you'd be surprised how much higher the turnover is). The new deadline is Thursday, 10 AM PST. (That's 1PM EST) -

Yes, it's necessary. Your sheet mostly checks out, but if you can't get people to vouch for you it means that we don't know you enough to trust you with this. -
Capn Sperg's IPC application
Killerhurtz replied to TaToBa's topic in Whitelist Applications Archives
Your character is decent, however there's three things: 1. Numbers, last I checked, still aren't part of the character set that the server accepts in a name. Dumb, I know, but it is what it is. 2. Post in OOC, once per round, to advertise yourself so that people may post feedback here, otherwise I will need to deny it. You have until Tuesday. 3. RAVIOLI RAVIOLI GIVE ME THE PASSWORDI -

Uberzweihander's IPC Whitelist App.
Killerhurtz replied to Uberzweihander's topic in Whitelist Applications Archives
Extending the deadline. Don't forget to advertise OOC - it'd be a shame if I had to deny this app because no one else but me approves it. -
No, it's not. I absolutely LOVE the concept. MMIs are great and all that - but it always struck me as wierd that they didn't have something like this - because even with suspended animation/life support, there's no better way to maintain a brain than with an organic body. There's only one small issue, and it's lore. The ETHICS of growing a conscious human and putting them in a cryo cell to act as station AI are... dubious, at best. (It's still something I could see happening, personally, but talks will need to be had) Still, I absolutely love everything about this. The concept of an actual sapient, emotional AI. The sprite. And how, in a worst WORST case scenario, the AI can actually be helpful - instead of being carded, you can temporarily take it out of cryo and give it a gun to make sure the one most important piece of technology (and it's even more expensive/important now that it's alive) has better chances of making it to CC. Or allow it to self-release and it can just bolt open the doors to Departures and make a dash for it if things get too terrible. It's like the (missing - maybe it's there in new code) mechanic of taking an MMI/posibrain out of an AI and transplanting it in a borg/IPC frame for extraction, made easier. EDIT: Quick talks were had. The ruling was that there was absolutely nothing lore-breaking about Nanotrasen implementing this type of processors, and there's even been some enthusiasm in the lore team about it. So by now it's up to Skull/the coders to approve and make it happen if it's something we want..

Flowhound News Network The REAL news network, with real information. New Species In Town - Instruments or Infestation? Recently, a new species - scientifically called the Vaurca - has made it's entrance on the scene of Tau Ceti. Basically gigantic insects, their society is reported to be quite similar to them as well - and so is their capability to work. Slowly but surely - their impossible work drive and their immensely lower costs have made them a powerhouse of cheap labor, quickly filling posts in workplaces that could otherwise be taken by actual citizens, driving entire families to the streets and stealing a large part of the market to themselves. We are already feeling the effect - the reported unemployment rate has increased by one-point two percent in two weeks. Projected estimates show that, at this rate, every single sector that does not have a paperwork, safety or otherwise public service component will be replaced by the Vaurca within the next four months, increasing the unemployment rate by upwards of sixty percent! And that's only because, right now, lax laws ALLOW them to occupy these roles - and soon, even, maybe even the civilian sectors will be affected - not even our banks and restaurants will be safe. Do YOU want to be served by a big space bug? And THEN there's the problem of their mouths. Have you seen it? Large like an arm, strong like a hippopotamus' jaw. They're reported to eat meat, too. Is that their plan? Run down our economy to feed on the unemployed with their large, violent mandibles? Experts say it's possible - they have been noted to be able to tear the flesh and rend the bones of our good citizens, which only tried to defend themselves - and if they can assault people, there's nothing stopping them from just grabbing a snack out of someone's arm. It could be your resident hot dog stand attendant. It could be that friendly worker whose job just got replaced by one of the bugs. It could be your grandmother, even. Or it could be YOU! And what protection do we have? Laws? What are laws going to do against such a great number? What's more, they reportedly need only air to be exposed to space. What's stopping them from becoming a bigger problem than space carps to space stations, tearing the steel walls apart and inflicting the dread of being exposed to vacuum to the poor crewmembers inside? What's stopping them from breaking open a station and turning it from a workhorse of our great society into a big space ant buffet? Turning one of our warships into a well-protected snack bar? Your local space elevator could even be a pit stop. We need concrete action. We need actual laws that limit their numbers - laws that allows us to, at least, turn them back, if not to make sure they never come back by whichever means required. We need laws that assure that there will be no space arthropods creeping up on our children's window and making them their next appetizer. We need the power to make sure that no good people are out of a job because some insect asks for less! We need safety. The question is; who will provide it? This was your host, Donernest Zundelshwarz, signing off.

Uberzweihander's IPC Whitelist App.
Killerhurtz replied to Uberzweihander's topic in Whitelist Applications Archives
I do quite like this idea, so +1 from me. Though there's three things you should know: 1. This DOES mean that this will PERMANENTLY retire Frank Hardie as a human, and you may get whitelist stripped if human Frank Hardie is purposefully used. 2. While you have my approval, you need more. As per protocol, I will leave this open for 1-2 days - post in OOC chat, once per round, a link to this application to get more reviews. 3. RAVIOLI RAVIOLI GIVE ME THE PASSWORDI Best of luck! -
I meant it more like Hitchiker's Guide holocubes or Mass Effect style datadisks. The shape doesn't matter as much as the function - just generally some ultracompact storage device that actually looks like it would fit in a reasonably-sized box.
-
I, too, like Sierra's idea because it's what I originally had in mind. 1.) Doubt it. 2.) What sterilizing fluid? This doesn't seem really all that planned out. 3.) No. What you do with corpses as a medical professional is thusly: You retrieve the body, you attempt to put it back together to make it presentable for funeral proceedings, you hold the body for next of kin to recover so that the deceased's family and come and do funeral proceedings as is their right. Cremating a body or holding a funeral for someone without contacting their family first is culturally despicable and is one of the most ultimate forms of disrespect for the dead. It's only SLIGHTLY okay to burn a body if its presence is actively harming people, but even then dumped corpses in maintenance are supposedly an anomaly for the day-to-day work schedule of a private corporate workplace in the middle of space. Not unless Bones Jingleton has anything to say about it, of course. And as far as anything goes, I rarely see you on the server to begin with, but. I see plenty of people stick around to observe (I mean they are sort of forced to wait for 30 minutes before they can respawn anyway) and get cloned when medical gets around to it. It's really just a moot point. One thread per suggestion. Mixing multiple ideas into one thread actulally makes managing this forum or deciding what to add more difficult to manage. And ya wonder why I'm not onboard with any of this. But I guess me disagreeing with you makes me an asshole, right? "If. If is good," Delta said to himself, totally unironically. Hardly makes it any different from any sort of gas leak. This wasn't really innovative to begin with. >be a medical professional >not wearing long sleeves and covering almost every trace of skin >not obsessing over even the slightest risk of contagions >not grabbing all the spray bottles at the beginning of the round and telling the chemist to mass produce space cleaner >not bothering to forcibly sleep toxin people who desperately need medical treatment >not screaming at other lesbian doctors to cover up their bodies and to put a sterile jumpsuit on and some clean(er) underwear, because exposing skin in the medbay is haram Holy shit, I'm going to make a almost-non-ironic Muslim medical character because of this. In which that seems to occur in many rounds due to the current meta-mindset of secret/nuclear/literally any other murderbone game mode > extended, this is why I'm very much against this suggestion. At the very least, it will be viewed as a nuisance mechanic and nobody will be made to give a dead body any second thoughts. Still not convinced, no matter how much one could attempt to make it less overbearing. It'd be better off not implemented. I don't think it's worth the dev team's time and effort. Bodies are not normally left to sit for 30 minutes, they're typically either found and immediately dragged to medbay or never found in that time. There are better ways (HEM, way better ways) to make the game more engaging yet difficult. You can't roleplay with festering, rotting corpses. 2.)Sterilizine. AKA a chemical that already exists in the codebase for that purpose but isn't used because there's currently no disadvantage of operating without it. 3.) You're talking about right here right now. I don't know how much of it is going to be respected by a mega-corp, in space, where needs are needs. As far as the single idea goes, I'm aware - that was not a suggestion, that was an idea to debate after (if) this was implemented. You just asked for what it could bring. AS for whether or not it's worth the dev's time, that's not your prerogative so it's a moot point. And you said it yourself - bodies are either dragged or never found - it makes finding corpses easier/more interesting. You DO seem to have a personal vendetta against the idea though.
-
That's a very good point. Though as far as IPCs/prosthetics go, I disagree for the most part; IPCs MAYBE if we decide to define a really set weight, but as far as it's defined IPCs are not particularly heavier than humans, and prosthetics can only help to a degree. The "big, heavy lizard" part refers to all of it - they got strong arms to hold the weapon, but more body mass and stronger legs for a better shooting stance, as well.
-
Well they can start to rot in 2 minutes. Or 20, like I suggested. What it would bring to the table? -Greater urgency in dealing with patients - actually use sterilizing fluid, actually clean up the blood that's everywhere, actually cremate/send off corpses. And as far as cloning goes - I don't know many people who stick around waiting to be cloned 20 minutes after their death. -Possible new interesting weapons/situations, along with possible usage in events - I'm thinking probably even a wizard spell. -A new threat to watch out for, if it happens -A new emergency to deal with (and from what I've seen emergencies IC are the biggest providers of RP) -Hell, make it a new hazard if you want. There's already a breeding alert where stuff spawns - let it fester and they all die, causing the room to be infested with miasma. Or have a mouse die in the vents and have a room have some miasma slowly be injected in the system until the section of pipe is cleaned/replaced. -More careful medical, as infections will gradually get worse as the tile gets miasma'd unless dressed and disinfected, and people will more readily catch infections if not sterilized before being cut open. As I said for the cloning part - make it 20 minutes, or make it 40 minutes maybe - we're not talking about instarot. We're talking about bodies which, unless something drastic happen, wouldn't be cloned until much later in the round anyway.
-
Can we like, stop mentioning lifeweb? If this happen it will be on our own prerogative. And yeah, we do have these things. Dwarf fortress happens in a year - but that's because a year is like 5 minutes of gametime.
-
That's good enough for me. Approved. Enjoy your tin can.

Arguably, we can create lore reasons. A variant of wallrot (which is a fungus that attacks walls - only once in a while does it become a serious infestation, because metal is tough) which targets organic matter. All space travelers are given vaccines - so as long as they're alive, their body is amply capable of fighting it. But once they die, the fleshrot (for a lack of better term) quickly sets in, decomposing the body. That's a suggestion - but as I said, we can easily create various explanations. Also I didn't know it was a Lifeweb thing, I never played Lifeweb. We're not lifeweb so we shouldn't compare it to Lifeweb, we can code our own damn thing. As Fowl said, I based it off Dwarf Fortress. Also, why should we not touch these two files?

This. It's the future - why are we still using 8-inch floppy disks? I understand that, for visibility, we don't actually use a 2px microSD card, but seriously? If needed I can totally code a few holocubes for this purpose, too, so that they look better. The only reason I can see why it's like that is because the nuke disk is also a disk, and so changing the size would allow the nuke disk to be hidden much better - like in a box, or say, inside the captain's chest cavity.
-
Real answer: Probably you've been playing on the new codebase without knowing. The Vaurca haven't been ported to the new codebase; ergo, when the new codebase is active, it's impossible for there to be Vaurca for now.
-
Pretty much everything is implied in the title. A new atmospheric gas identified as Miasma. Lore-wise, it would be a mixture of decomposition gasses and microbacteria. Mechanics-wise, it would be a gas that creates a very thin fog at high concentrations. It would also be smellable (like a red text going "You smell a putrid odor"), and cause minute toxin damage. It would also, however, greatly increase (if not guarantee) infections to occur, and would have a chance to cause people exposed to it to be spontaneously affected by a random virus. And since it's decomposition gasses, it would also be combustible (to a much lesser degree than plasma, of course). As side effects, a high enough concentration could induce vomiting. It would be created in a variety of ways, depending on how far we want to go: -Decaying bodies. Dead people or animals, after let's say 10 minutes (not supposed to be realistic, but interesting), start emitting miasma. -Infections. Infected people produce small amounts of miasma, proportional to the severity of the infection. -Food rot. Food that isn't stored in a safe place (which, for all intents and purposes and to keep things simple, means all crates and lockers), will eventually decay into a "Rotten Mess" and emit miasma. -Xenoarcheologic anomalies -Ground blood that's been sitting there for a while -Cultist Rune (passively so - make that rune somewhere, hide it, and there would be a mysterious source of miasma) -Wounds. Unless sterilizine is used, wounds cause minute amounts of miasma, increasing the risk of infection. Of course, since it's a gas, it would go into the atmospheric system - and so a miasma vent would need to be put in. What would this bring? Well, for one, no dead would be forgotten about. We would have an incentive to use the crematorium and to get people cloned ASAP. Also an incentive to get blood cleaned really fast, and for the chef to make things on-demand rather than just spam food and then go abuse the bar's services. Medbay could get a lot more interesting a lot faster - especially in the first few days where the people who don't read patch notes still don't use sterilizine. In general, it gives a lot more interaction with the dead. Thoughts?

So, in my other thread, people echoed a thought that I found was too true. "Unathi and Tajara are too close to being reskinned humans". So why not make them different? Here's what I suggest we should tweak: --Unathi-- As per the lore, make them actually unable to fix hunger with the "nutriment" chemical. Animal protein or egg yolk only. Blood, maybe? Give them a tailwhip skill, iguana-style. They're big, heavy reptiles. Give them a slightly slower walk speed (probably just a bit faster than a cyborg) On the other hand, they're big, heavy reptiles. They ought to be able to hold a gun more stably, and so give them a slight accuracy bonus when using firearms. Toxin damage from ingesting the following chemicals/food items: Cream and Milk (they never developed the gut flora to digest it). Frost Oil (they're vulnerable to cold). Capsaicin (shit's actually mildly toxic, yo). Cherries (Unathi most likely don't have the mouth dexterity to bite off the flesh, and the pits are toxic to lizards), Eggplants (apparently toxic to lizards) Slower healing (because humans actually heal really fucking fast compared to other animals) On the flipside, since a lot of lizards are known to be capable to regrow limbs, they can actually slowly heal bone damage A sharp sense of smell allows them to gauge air composition ---Tajara--- Drop the idea of wearing gloves altogether, I don't know how putting holes for claws in insulated gloves doesn't compromise them, but yeah. It'd restrict their activity by quite a bit, but it would make sense. Also, if it's not already the case, they can't wear hats because ears. Faster heartbeat and breathing (so they consume more air, so they suffocate a bit faster) Claws make it uncomfortable/unsafe to use one-handed weapons (I say one-handed because it can be argued that most, if not all, two-handed weapons' pistol grip can be ignored) Haloss has a very small chance of causing the Tajara to catch fire (I mean - electricity and fur? Doesn't mix) Sparks and getting shocked (like by hacking a door or cutting a live wire) also has a small chance to cause a tajara fire Fur and a generally smaller frame gives them a slight evasion bonus against brute weapons Toxin damage from ingesting the following chemicals/food items: Cream and Milk (only a small part of humans can actually drink milk anyway; most mammals stop being capable of doing so after infanthood). Capsaicin (shit's actually mildly toxic, yo), chocolate Agile tail helps with balance. This can be manifested in several ways: gets up faster or simply doesn't fall down when gravity comes back on, is not affected by slippery floors, so on. Thoughts?

I'll leave it open for two more days. While you have my personal approval, it is poor taste to approve apps out of the blue - and so don't forget to advertise it in OOC to get reviews.

-1. No RP value at all, characters are chucklefucks, and apparently IIRC Mark is filthy rich just for the sake of being rich yet still works.
