  1. Noooo. No. A 19 year old character can not have plausibly been a cadet, an apprentice, an intern and a lab assistant. They may have picked up something of other departments (using a flash, knowing useful materials for science, dismantling simple things like racks and tables, knowing first aid.) but they can just not have received all that training. You need to apply, email back and forth with an employer, get an appointment to discuss your CV, et cetera. What we ARE saying is that a 19 year old can know how to do /most/ things in a single department on a need-to-know basis (filling circuit imprinter with sulphuric acid for science, laying cables/set the engine for engineering, using flashes/handcuffs/proper arrest procedure as cadet (though rn officer has 18y/o age requirement), setting cryo tubes and have proper medical equipment as medical intern, generally setting things up.) but they can't explain to anyone how it works, or why it works, just that it works. And probably isn't optimal either way. As for actions being simple ICly, some actions just /are/. Setting a digital valve is literally just pushing a button or two. Knowing what to set it to takes theory, but actually doing it is pushing buttons. Just like the microwave, dispensers and vendors, science machinery, robotics machinery, guns, shields, and the list goes on. Knowing what buttons to press is the hard part, not actually pushing it. Plus, half of any job is common sense (you don't point that gun on yourself, the bandage goes over the wound, the air stays IN the pipes, these machines need materials to make things.) so you could do a bit of guesswork. Though, keep in mind that knowing how to do something doesn't immediately mean you're capable of doing the job. Knowing how to cook doesn't make me a chef, making a table doesn't make me an engineer and knowing how to apply a bandage doesn't make me a doctor, for example.
  2. Yeah, what Sierra said. Pushing a few buttons isn't hard, no matter how complicated the machine itself. If you understand the machine, you know WHY you press those buttons, but you're not doing anything radically different than when you didn't know. You don't have to know what the supermatter crystal is composed of, or that it kills you if you touch it. All you need to know is that it's the power source and that it works if you follow specific steps to set it up. Likewise, with SMESes. The whole installing coils thing will need guidance, but all you are doing when setting the power is... Pushing buttons. Different department example: Firing guns as security. Firing a gun isn't hard, you pull the trigger. Aiming, and consequentially, hitting someone with said gun, that's the hard part. Pulling the trigger (read: pushing the button) is not hard at all. And even surgery, if you strip it down to the bare bones, isn't that complicated: You cut them open with a knife, you fix them, you close them up. Yes, untrained people will hit arteries, make bad cuts and forget anesthetic, but that doesn't mean the actions themselves are hard. The difference is that a trained surgeon actually practiced and mastered it, so the patient does not die. And finally, even science isn't too hard (at least research). You can tell any lab assistant: Here, take this thing I printed, put it in the thing and then *push the button*. Robotics? Oh, just push this button behind the one labeled "robot". There, parts. Not to diminish any need of training, but like Sierra said, getting a step by step guide from a book or trained personnel will make you able to do tasks like that. The theory behind it is what differentiates monkeys from personnel.
  3. Yeaaaah keep this stuff off-station. Making callbacks to it IC should be fine though ("I had a great time last night.") if you don't go into detail. If you really want to build on the relationship, ask for their byond/discord key in LOOC and discuss things in private chat. Trust me, I've done this, it's a foolproof way. Unless you're foolproof-proof fool.
  4. They said you can still delete your characters if you're still trying to make one that sticks, just IC name changing will disappear. And that's even somewhat realistic, as IRL namechanges also need to go through all those legal authorities.
  5. Locking and archiving, since the original complaint has been resolved.
  6. I think it may have... Half as much impact as atmos? I mean, water is a very required thing in many areas of the station(Botany/xenobotany, kitchen, xenobiology, showers, custodial.) but how will you implement the amount of water left? I guess it adds something for traitors to mess with, but like atmos, if it becomes that important it will be round-breaking. This could lead to interesting situations, I see potential, but it needs tons and tons of polish.
  7. Huh. Well, I guess the random character thing is for when you can't decide what to make your character, and that's good, it gives you inspiration for the character. To be honest, I didn't even realize people were doing this at all. Though in hindsight it makes sense, but a random character every round is... Bad for immersion, as well. Pretty sure NT doesn't do single shift payments and then fire the person. I'm in favor of this.
  8. I did take that into consideration, and it has been explained in an earlier post. My decision remains, the captain was on the wrong end there, starting a chain of miscommunication. I'm not handing out punishment, because most of this entire issue is based on IC miscommunication that led to more miscommunication. But my ruling is still the same.
  9. This looks like a huge bit of miscommunication, starting around the ending of the meeting. Most posts here agree on how the meeting went, though with different opinions on the intent of the captain. After cross-examining these posts with the issue posted in the OP, I'm going to have to rule this as the captain's fault, for trying to take charge too early. He did not let the HoS command his own department to stay in the brig, even though the HoS was aware of the demands, and then it seems to have snowballed from there because of the animosity it created.
  10. I think the largest problem with ninja is the players not getting how to RP properly with it. Most get into a single argument in comms before mass murder ensues, generally. People need to learn, imo, that murderbone is not the best way to antag everything.
  11. Uh, no thank you. I hate regular cult with a passion already, it has flaws in its lore, concept AND execution. The latter is mostly on the players' part, but I have /never/ enjoyed a cult round on any server. Adding another cult is just... No. Even if it is based on base building, where would you build? Those machines take up space, and pretty sure you have a low chance of your entire department being cult.I say no to this. (And remove regular cult while we're at it but that's a personal gripe.)
  12. I'm up for that, though you could extend it slightly to the kitchen and the chef, with the whole taste thing. If you do it for drinks, do it for food too.
  13. Yeah, I see the same issue as everyone else here, namely there being nothing to do on Tcomms, not to mention they can listen in on channels they have no access to. I personally don't think it will add a whole lot to the roleplay, and there will be even less people on station. I would endorse some kind of "emergency route" to the tcomms satellite for if there is no CE or RD to handle it. And for antags to abuse.
  14. Hum. After reading through all of this, I think I see a bit of miscommunication in here. What the OP is saying is that different people have different mindsets on things. Fair enough, one person is scared of spiders while the other keeps them as pets, for example. So one person is less afraid of guns than the other. Or explosives. And while the arguments the OP makes do make sense, he should also understand that we, as mods, not only need to let people adhere to the rules, but also need to keep the game fun for everyone. Hence why you get bwoinked if you suddenly start attacking someone. Why don't you try emoting grabbing crowbar and walking towards the victim? I get that emotes are hard to do during combat, but before and after should be doable. From what I've read in this thread, your intentions were fine, but the execution was flawed. When the wizard stepped back and threatened you, that's a sign they are willing to RP the situation out. They will most likely give you time to type out an emote or say, and rushing them in that situation is quite a dick move, even if they bombed you twice. Should you have typed an emote before you jumped her, I'm quite certain it would have been a much more fun situation for everyone. Especially in the medbay situation, where the antag was in no condition to fight back, an emote or two before you attack goes a long way. I think you should keep that in mind next time, the game needs to be as fun as possible for everyone, straight combat is not the optimal solution to a character snapping.
  15. Ehhh. Idk about this. I would like time to go a little faster than 1:1 to RL time, but too fast isn't the way to go either. Besides, the time right now is wonky too. One shift the time on the status tab is 12:35, while the next shift is... 8:20. What? So that means, if you ARE doing 1:1 to RL, that's a shift from BEFORE the round prior to it. So that would technically mean you cannot reference the previous round unless you make a loophole. I would lean in favor of time compression to actually get a bit of progression going with my characters (I don't think any of them would transit off and on the station 5 times a day.) . I would be in favor of the medium compression, that seems like a nice progression to me, not too fast, not too slow.
  16. I won't get into the whole "what edition is better" thing but I'm up for joining the party. I prefer some customization in my character however.
  17. Ugh, never mind. CCIA forbade Yumi coming onto the station /at all/ during pregnancy. God damn it. Edit: Hang on, sent an appeal to maybe come in as visitor. Might actually get something out of this.
  18. Lukas Chapman. It's not really a secret.
  19. BYOND Key: TrickingTrapster Character name: Yumi Yotin Item name: Maternity Clothes Why is your character carrying said item to work? Quite simply because she is pregnant and needs special clothes to accomodate the growing belly. Item function(s): It's just clothing, really, but maybe changes the sprite to enlarge the belly, to make it a little more obvious. Edit: Maybe, to make it more mechanically relevant, increase maximum nutrition need and increase the speed at which Yumi goes hungry. Item description: Loose, stretchy clothing to accomodate growing life. Item appearance: I'll assume yumi like to keep her style, so white upper clothing and purple lower clothing. How will you use this to better interact with crew and/or stimulate RP? Mostly because Yumi is carrying twins, her belly will expand faster and more than with single pregnancy, and she will need these clothes sooner or later. Pretty sure no clothes like it are obtainable right now, so I might as well ask for them. Additional comments: After the pregnancy is over, I might ask for removal. Might. Not sure though. I may also apply for the same kind of thing wedding dress, but we'll have to see.
  20. Yeah, Vile, that may be cool and everything, but I was looking more at a short-term solution for the coders too. What Nanako suggested works as well, but a huge overhauling suggestion like yours would take incredibly long to implement, on top of all the other things the coders are working on.
  21. Sonic, that's actually half the point. Right now it's way too easy to subvert an AI. While I don't say it should be impossible, right now all you need an ai upload board as a traitor and you basically control the round. That's balancing the scales just way too far in the traitor's favor, imo. Maybe restrict hacked AI modules to a certain amount of uses, or only one active law per board? It's a little crazy how easy it is to control a powerful tool like the AI as a traitor.
  22. No, not really. Giving people beatings and taking away their stuff is not the same as denying access to the shuttle. If anything it was him abusing the fact he was secvamp and the crew being unable to do anything about it. That action did not have any prior roleplay involved, he just rode up to the escape wing in a cargo tug and "banned" the shuttle.
  23. Alright, so, this is an idea to bring a little bit of a warning system and a bit of balance, I guess, to antags uploading their subverted laws to the AI. Give the captain's office/RD's office a password that needs to be typed in before you can actually upload anything. I thought of this because it seems to be so incredibly easy to subvert the AI as traitor/wizard. Especially if that traitor is a scientist/engineer, when they have access to boards with which they can just build the console out of everyone's sight, or on the outpost, and just do whatever the hell they want to the AI. Putting a password in they have to find out before being able to upload stuff would give them incentive to break into places and actually give the crew a clue to what's going on, because right now, once the AI is subverted the crew is usually screwed, especially on deadhour. So, here is how it would work mechanically: After selecting a borg/AI you get a prompt to fill in a password. Fill it in wrong, and the console flashes an error message and you cannot upload what you wanted to. Put the right password in and you can use one board before you have to put the password in again. The password should be simple words, like Pretty Shoelaces or something like that. Traitors can also get a part of the password by emagging the console, after which they would get a message like: "A few letters flash across the screen: ..et.y ...e..ce." After which they can try to guess the password. If the password is entered wrong, the AI will get an alert that someone attempted to hack it with a location, but if it is filled in right, it will be none the wiser. The password itself would initially be in the RD's office on a paper, like with the monitor password, or in the captain's office. Or both. Traitors can get to them if they are crafty, but it should be quite a bit harder than it is now, because now it feels way too easy.
  24. First and foremost, yes, I don't like the way you antag, but that doesn't have to do with this warning. This was purely about your end-of-round move you pulled right there. Secondly, me making calls on grey area antag actions is one of the reasons I am a mod for. We were talking about it in LOOC when the round ended with no way to delay it. We were not done talking, so I took it to PMs because it was becoming an issue and I did not want to involve other players into the discussion. At that point I started treating it like I bwoinked you instead, since you were being overly defensive in my eyes. My job as moderator is to be unbiased when I am making calls like that, so yes, I can and I'm supposed to act unbiased when it's taken to ahelps. I did not defer to catnip because, like I said, /at that moment/, I felt he was pretty involved in the matter. Catnip himself witnessed the warning I wrote and it did not seem any issues were taken on his side, making me more confident he would have warned you too. I did not "rush" to deal with it, I simply continued where we left off in the last round. And, if I'm totally honest, to me, this feels like the warning ruined your fun of being an antag and you're making a complaint over it. Not saying that's the actual case, but that's what it feels like.
  25. "wasn't really breaking the rules (grey area)" That, right there. A grey area can both be punished and not punished depending on the circumstances. It's one of the reasons moderators and by extension admins exist on this server, to determine if people that get into the grey area are being in the wrong or not. "There is literally no way for you to prove that." Right back at you, you have no way to prove that I wasn't. At that point I felt catnip was just as involved as me since he was under your direct command ICly. "No, it's just speculation." I asked Catnip to give this a read and voice his opinion, since we both keep referencing him.
