  1. Maybe it might also compare with the rags already in the game? Could it perhaps be reworked similarly? In that instance with the rags, you'd also think that they'd be more commonly found (in normal, non-ghetto circumstances). Then again, that might have a few issues with the gameplay balance department considering their other uses. Even if they are a separate item distinct from rags: would there be any difference when trying to clean up dried fluids? Would there be a way of acquiring more handkerchiefs? Do they come in different colours or patterns? Would there be any other forms of kerchiefs? Could I tie them around my neck? Could I put it in a breast pocket? Can I make a hobo bindle if I tie them to a stick or a rod? Would one be able to get one out of certain existing bandanas or neckerchiefs? Could I use a scarf to dab something up?

    "Push" verb

The number of TIIIIMES this would've been swellular. Do you think it's possible to somehow combine both push and pull so that if you're moving towards the object, you're pushing—— actually I guess that might have issues with how you go with to-the-side movements because pushing and pulling work slightly differently from there. Do you think it could also be made with a hotkey? For pulling, it's ctrl-click.
  3. ey yo that sounds real sick I guess chances are we probably wouldn't be in any position where we would be firing so far away as to hear the whizz before the crack of gunfire. Or even hear any gunshot to begin with if you're that far away. So we might not have to worry about that. For now. Adding more sounds for it seems like fun for those who like to get their heads in the universe and those who like to get their heads in the game. I wonder how processing's going to handle it in those off-chance intense, heavy firefights with all sorts of bullets flying everywhere. Regardless, I'm almost certain whizzing was achieved in another codebase somewhere... But it might just be me.
  4. This seems like a pretty neat idea that's certainly doable in terms of whether a person can actually achieve this, and personally I would like to see it become a thing for that reason. However, I do want to consider that others may feel that this would lead to some sort of abuse. How I would imagine it would be that, worst case scenario, you'll get people practically playing hot potato with a live grenade (for example) when any other person would just gtfo the heck away from that jazz — if possible. Or like, jump on it or something and be a total hero. That's entirely something that's likely to happen, I feel. I think that's a bit more a community-related issue though; there are a number of things you can actually do/exploit in the game but are generally frowned upon and/or moderated against. That doesn't necessarily guarantee satisfaction from everyone, though. I have a question questions related to how this is implemented if it would be: Regarding people who are restrained (as such with handcuffs, cable ties, straightjackets), how would this be handled? Regarding people who are buckled (as such in chairs; but not restrained), how would this be handled? .................and I guess this one is really more like a coder's momma forewarning: "Don't forget to check that they have feet to kick with" And speaking of which, what about people with damaged legs, organic or otherwise? Do you think it would be viable if, say, it caused some pain or malfunction for them to kick something while their leg is damaged (albeit maybe not something extreme like OH MY DEAR GOD I STUBBED ALL TEN OF MY SHATTERED TOES ON THAT PILLOW AAAAAAANNNNOOOOOOOOOO)? And what if you kick something heavy? Something metallic? Can you kick animals away? Can you kick me away? There's perhaps a few things to consider. Might be a bit weird that you'd only be able to kick with an empty hand but I guess that's part of a (current) technical limitation with controls, huh? If this is being implemented, there might also be an opportunity for adding in a new room, either added on or as part of the holodeck system. Put in a (small) football field or some such.
  5. This would be really grand. It probably wouldn't be fair to just ask for the removal of it outright considering it was just implemented. Other people may probably benefit from it in some way. But the way it is currently implemented, in my opinion, makes certain audible emotes really awkward. Before I saw this thread, I was actually coming in thinking if instead it was just made a toggleable feature, perhaps in Preferences and/or the character setup's global tab. If we're going with Shame's method instead/as well, I was also thinking maybe refrain from autopunctuating not just with quotation marks but maybe also other forms of punctuation like commas, colons, semicolons, possibly em and en dashes. As it stands right now, I think it only doesn't place a period when it detects (at the end of the message) an exclamation mark, a question mark, or a hyphen.
  6. But how is this any different to someone arguing that we need to follow a game purely by mechanics and them using that argument when talking about people who try to do something else to that? And, hey, you're right. This is a sci-fi game. This isn't necessarily about "realism", but BELIEVABILITY. Surely you would disagree with something like a 17-year-old high school kid having the position of Chief Medical Officer, rambling on about how their life sucks and their parents are dead and then blatantly fondling their special serpent necklace whenever a single person walks into the same room? Yes, but doesn't this apply to just about everyone? This is a game we all come here to have fun and enjoy, and yes, we have slightly different ways of having fun. So OF COURSE people are going to say that, and rightfully, I feel, they can. After all, what are forums for? We have threads on ban requests and complaints, and anyone could tell you when they take one look at them that this is at least based on the fact in some partial way that this is something they personally disagree with — lest they wouldn't be making a complaint in the first place. Let me try to put it like this: if you had a character that could do every single thing in the game, would that really be fun in the end? Not just for you, but for everyone else with their roles? Right, but again: it is. And I understand that we tend to operate under "staff's word is final", but yet we are also told to understand that they too are human. What happens if, hypothetically speaking, they don't quite see it any other way to even understand why there is a conflict between two parties to begin with? Things happen for a reason. Even then: what happens when the entire server is on it? Because I have seen first-hand moderators tell me that they would personally agree with something on someone, but it's just it's the "status quo" of what everyone else is saying. And look, this is an extreme analogy, so feel free to call me out on it: but if everyone suddenly managed to get to a point where everyone was sticking their characters' dicks into vaginas across the station right on this server? Everyone demands for it, but does that make it "okay"? I don't even have to go that far: What about cloning? "Oh, I'm cloned? Rgh. Time to get the bastard that got me. Let me out, doc'." Holodecks? "Bah, this doesn't really hurt: this is just a training thing." Civilians suddenly taking up arms whenever armed mercenaries in military-grade gear come in? R&D suddenly, miraculously "researching experimental weapons" that they already know what is going to be like so that they can now go out and shoot a motherclucker. Even when these things are being reported, it still happens. Because no-one is trying. And what doesn't help either, is that when it comes to that point, it doesn't help that we run some sort of black ops operation and aren't transparent about what why something happened, for some cases. Particularly a recent one too. And I understand that's to protect the identity of someone here, but you can still do that. Because this isn't about some witch hunt and shaming an individual — if it comes to that, then what does that speak of our community? I have seen so many people that have left because they feel we are toxic, and I have proof to back that up. The fact that we can't even see that being a possibility just makes it all the more dangerous. If we can't even be bothered to take a look at the mirror, then who are we to speak of another's characteristics? We don't need to go around seeking punishments of players because that's not what a game should be about, I would argue. Yet here we are. It won't change anything, because it still happens, and because people barely ever learn out of this. But the worst thing of all is that it could have been resolved a much more different way. You do realise that the implications and connotations behind staff intervention, along with things like player complaints and incident reports, go well beyond than just the apparent professional and unbiased paragon we try to make them out to be? Even if the intent was just to be a friendly sit-down, it will be stressful, and nerve-wracking, and quite easily seen as an attack. It is a natural instinct for one to feel the need to defend themselves. I mean-- look at me right now! And then- that? Combined with my perception that people tend to always think that they're in the right? That is a deadly combination to the entirety of community integrity. We should be trying to avoid those things, not seeking them out! Indeed, but so it's rampant, then why does it have to come to a point where it needs to be ahelped expecting action to be taken because it's perceived to be against server rules when staff would easily see it for themselves? So it's rampant, that could suggest a whole majority of people are doing it, too, which might then suggest why "no-one is(/appears to be) ahelping it". My apologies for coming off as attacking you here, by the way, Zundy, so please understand that I'm not- Like- I love you. But try to picture this: You're a new player looking for a new server that does high/heavy/hard roleplay. Take a look at the BYOND server list now. Not even a quarter of those would be marked as HRP. When Aurora is marked as one, what could you expect? Because what difference are we, again, from something that does MRP instead, if we can't uphold any sort of atmosphere? People come here justifiably hoping to find "realism". Where else can they go? If we can't even be fucked to even try — and I mean really try — then why call ourselves HRP? And you know, you're right. "You wouldn't be playing on the Aurora" is exactly what people had in mind when they left. They got fed up of trying only to be knocked back down, and what seemed like everyone just discouraging them from doing it in the first place. So much disappointment because they thought we were supposed to be encouraging this, when we've been doing the opposite, I feel. But going back to tea here without the cosmic rambling and more on a "superficial level": as TheDocOct argues, I would agree that this won't change the fact that people do these things in the first place. So my other argument for me is that I don't see how tea healing people makes much sense.
  7. Now with all that nonsense aside, I would also like to say I am personally interested in Kaed's suggestions. I think that would help a big tonne here on this aspect. Because, to me: A) It would make a lot more sense B) It would add more to the game C) I personally hope it would come off as a good compromise here based on some of the points already brought up by others
  8. Could I also mention — in a horrifically late response — that they have been reported, only for the response to be along just the same lines that have been brought up here: "tea has healing properties; therefore, it's okay"? Do you really need me to sift through my entire collection of logs, especially when this is about a group behaviour in the community here? Just try it yourself and you'll see. I could try showing you more logs if you want but — I'm just saying — it'll take a while to sift through them. We can report about as many people as we like, but that's not going to change the fact that people are still doing this without thinking. Again: TEA that HEALS PEOPLE in SECONDS. Yes, it seems like such a small petty thing, but this is the topic about that one thing, out of many. You would be surprised at how much difference even the tiniest things can make; how can we call ourselves a HRP server if we can't even be bothered to even think about something "so basic and simple", to the point we just flick it away without ever allowing for discussion just because you disagree with it? Overall, this isn't just about tea having healing properties here. If it comes to the point where people insist on using just tea because they KNOW that it heals hey-presto, then we really need to start wondering about a few things here: How can we call ourselves HRP if we can't even sustain a believable atmosphere? I have seen tonnes of people leave by the numbers now because we couldn't do that. If mechanics takes such a precedence over immersion, then why bother going to HRP in the first place when there are tonnes of other places, that would get what one would want far better because it was designed specifically with that mindset as a goal? This is one of the few places where people would really hope when they come in, to find an atmosphere they can immerse themselves with, and not have to be dicked over by people yodelling at them on how to play the game "correctly". I understand that we may have different ideas of what "roleplay" means, but please understand that there are the set of people who get fucked over because people want to stick to mechanics. How is that fair? Why does one side get more favour than the other? Why are there even sides here? It is so easy to stick by the mechanics and stay with those bare bone minimums. Because it is so convenient for us as players — but if that's the case, then you have to ask yourselves: are we really role playing at this point? Making everything easy for ourselves to deal with as players? It's like playing a game on the easiest difficulty with cheats on over and over again. And you know, maybe that's how you want to play that game: fine. But to insist that of other people? I beg your pardon, but "our wounded immersion" should be taken into a higher consideration than one might think — especially since it is a server rule to do your best not to break it. This happens all the time, so "ahelping it" is not going to do much, as above. Don't kid yourself: on my observation, experience, and opinion, a lot of people here just want to win the game. Or how about the fact that people wear hardsuits and voidsuits from start to finish all the way right through without ever taking them off? "Hypothetical" indeed. And I would agree with this. But what is being done right now? Because this will just keep going on and we'd just accept it just because everyone else is doing it. Punishing someone is not going to solve anything if it's in our behaviour of which we are perpetuating to INSIST that we are right no matter what, because people are just going to leave without ever understanding what went "wrong". Because we already treat something as so "right", without ever stopping to consider it. Now I'm by no means saying ALL OF Y'ALL ARE FUCKIN' BLIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIND. But I would like to say that if we don't even try to understand where someone is coming from, then what's the point? But look, I don't want to start going on a witch hunt here or digressing too much from the topic at hand. But my point is that this isn't just about tea having immediate and effective healing properties per se; even then though, why would it? We are letting so many people who come here down. Why bother coming here if we can't even live up to the name? If you honestly cannot see why "something so small and unimportant" is being brought up by someone, then why even encourage any room for discussion? Maybe I'm being dramatic here (and by all means please point that out), but please at least take into consideration that this "little trivial matter" has managed to come to a point where it has been brought up for specific reasons. And from an antag point of view: How do you spike people's tea with toxins? Okay sure, you can just use more, but what if-- when people just keep on insisting on drinking more tea the moment they see "Your body stings slightly."? Obstacles exist, and I would, personally, at least say that they're meant to exist. If we keep throwing them away for the sake of our convenience as players, then from a mechanical point of view: how is it going to be any fun? Conflict can come in far more vastly different forms than just the one of "shoot shoot bang bang someone is dead station is in chaos".
  9. Could I just butt in to also mention that this is tea we're talking about here? I recall reading the code comments related to the reagent effects saying something along the lines of "because it has antioxidants... or something like that". It's going to take far more than several cups of "black tart tea", first of all, to even see the effects of that. This stuff has immediate effects at such a severe intensity. As Keinto pointed out: I have seen first-hand people who just rushed the vending machine, doing that card-spam trick, then proceed to sprint back to someone puking their guts up and then pouring tea down their throat like a gas-guzzler. Countless times. This stuff. That is used to just casually t- I mean can you imagine someone with porphyria just walks in and all they get from a doctor is: "Okay kiddo here's my note of prescription: 20x cups of tea any tea just tea" and off they go? Do you realise how ridiculous this looks in way of maintaining immersion? I am going to have to personally disagree with the whole idea of 'preserving resources' and 'introducing alternatives', because that to me just seems like a mechanical excuse of having some sort of 100% perfect round; we could be accepting the challenge here, the conflict here, when there are no medical professionals around to assist. Likewise, this is not the only way to involve other people: it's not like all of a sudden we need 'tea' to involve other people. This game has much more creative potential than that, I believe. But could you just play this back in your heads? Someone's been exposed to VX gas or something, and then out on the radio, someone's chanting "DRINK TEA!!!"-- it- it- I'm sorry, but I, in my opinion, think that's just ridiculous. Trust me: the game gets a lot more boring a lot quicker if you don't accept having an obstacle. If we're just going to flick it away every single time then what could you expect when you find yourself sitting around going "Oh how I wish someone got severely injured." And could I also point out that tea has other effects besides antitoxin? But I admit that applies to quite a number of other beverages. As someone else also pointed out: a few single digits of damage can hardly be considered "serious poisoning" — yet at the same time, people treat it as though it is. The moment someone lights up on that monitor, you're going to have little Mr/Ms Guardian Angel asking questions and going straight for treatment. The moment someone's health even dips below 100, generally speaking, people will be seeking out something to rectify that — and in some cases, as I've witnessed countless times, would be going so out of their way and do whatever they can to get it. Tea. For God's sake. Cardiac arrest on the floor treated by hero bartender who hops the counter with two cuppas in their hand. Or- Or- Or people going to get drunk and knowing straight off the bat to drink tea with it as they go along. I don't think we're taking this very seriously.
  10. +1 It seems to me that there is a lot of detail put into this and a lot of thought placed in for this character — that information is quite abundant here already. I think they'd be a very interesting addition to the game and the narratives that could present themselves within. I've had several interactions with their characters before and I must say they've always held up quite well. Yeah I'm not entirely sure what else to say. It's solid. Solid.
  11. +1 I haven't really had many interactions with these characters but I have been able to be around to observe. I do think they take quite a lot of things into consideration when it comes to RP and I also believe that they would be able to handle an IPC just fine. I like the fact that this character utilises background entities in a way that feels as though it expands upon the universe; I am in agreement that the character is quite simple and not so terribly flashy — in terms of backstory — but in a really good way.
  12. +1 I personally like the sort of 'storyline' (if you can say that there's one determinate outcome for everything) that is going on here and I have no doubts about their ability to carry out an enjoyable RP experience for others with this proposed character. They've already made a lot of rounds in research very fun with their research director Carl Anderson — who, in my eyes, has already demonstrated a decent understanding on synthetic mechanics in terms of incorporated roleplay — and I sincerely believe that they have something going with this particular IPC character. I also like the usage of Solis Cognito University and the respective information currently on that article. Now, again, and forgive me if this sounds a bit lazy, but I've seen nothing but effort when they're roleplaying as their aforementioned characters. There is a lot of thought put into it, and I personally feel that it shows.
  13. +1. I have a very enjoyable experience roleplaying with their characters; each interaction is memorable and I would think that it would be a great idea to allow them the opportunity to play as heads of staff. Honestly, I think it'd be quite beneficial for all of us to grant them the opportunity and I have a lot of faith that they will help effect more enjoyable experiences for everyone in the rounds to come, whichever way this goes. Besides_we_need_more_research_directors_anyways.
  14. +1 I don't think there is really much that I could say that hasn't been said already. I have a lot of faith in Superiorform in that they mean to do well. I don't doubt they'll do a great job as Unathi: they seem to have a decent understanding of the species and seem to have a good idea with what they want to do with their proposed character. I've had stellar experiences roleplaying with their characters and I believe that this character would contribute to players' experiences as well. I just hope that they will have the opportunities to show their character.
  15. +1 DatBerry's always been quite good fun to RP with their various characters I've encountered throughout my time on the server. Now I admit I haven't read too much into Unathi lore (so bear that in mind) but as someone outside of all that jazz, I would say that this may bring something interesting to the server with different scenarios, potentially. The tie-in with the Zhan-Khazan Tajara encounter after having lived most of their life on Moghes (if I'm not mistaken), for example, could potentially be a minor detail that may play in as a factor — whether significant or mundane — with RP in runtime. Especially as a character enrolled in security. But don't take that from me because I haven't read too much into Tajaran lore either. It's a little snowflakey but I guess that may be somewhat inevitable given the concept of the character, if I may be so bold to say that I refer to the whole notion of the fact that they're a Guwan. But it's not anything OTT and, well, snowflake doesn't necessarily mean bad anyways (...even though it has negative connotations but anyways). I mean it's difficult to draw a line, if at all, with 'snowflake' and vivid, in many cases. I mean, you try going around describing people's lives and history that you know IRL. Nevertheless, I'm sure that DatBerry will be able to handle it appropriately and actually quite well — especially given that they recognise it right there. I think they'll know what they're doing, and I'm sure they'll be rightly open for any other feedback from the community if needed. I think there's some interesting potential for development here; it could introduce further diversity. Don't take my words too into mind because again, I know barely a few in Unathi lore. But to me, this really seems all right.
  16. Superiorform's always been an absolute delight to have on the community, in my opinion. Based on what I've seen, they're tolerant and open-minded, friendly and mature, and they really seem to care for the community. It is clear to me that they usually think about situations they come across before they make a move towards its resolution. I am in agreement with how they say they can handle anger, for it rarely ever shows and the times it does they always seem to have it under control. Everyone is capable of anger — we are all human after all (or so it seems) — but the sooner we accept that the better it will be; I believe I can see that with Superior. They are a very understanding person and I think that is an important trait to have for the server's staff, and they are very much wary and cautious of their actions. But importantly still, I can see how they adopt a doctrine of creativity. I'm fairly certain that moderators are official role models for the community. They are important to the staff, but they aren't here for the staff: they're here for the community. They communicate with others very well, and I can see that in Superior; they do not smother and impose on other people but instead inspire and create. They don't appear to do this for social status or ego but to help others have the fun we all came here to have together. I cannot stress enough how much I REALLY, REALLY would like to see this person take on the role of a moderator for this community. I would like to say though: real life may or may not come in at some point soon. But I am still most definitely in support for this application; we cannot know what has not happened.
  17. +1 I am going to begin by saying that it is quite clear that you are a very good sport when it comes to the game and to roleplay, and you are very tolerant and respecting towards others based on what I could see. That is a very healthy attitude to have when it comes to all sorts of things. I think it's absolutely fantastic that you can recognise certain key aspects that could be worked on. They are important aspects in my opinion, but the very fact that you can recognise and acknowledge them is already a very big step to improving. And THAT is why I think you would deserve it. You keep an open mind, and you always seem to be trying to include people, making sure they don't feel excluded. At least to me. That is a very fine quality to have, of which will play in incredibly well if you nail it with as a head of staff. You have always been a great pleasure to roleplay with and I feel like I can say that you're genuinely here to have fun and — just as important as it may be to you — help bring such enjoyment for others. That is, after all, what at least most of us came here to do. You rate yourself 5/10 for RP... Come on, Stryker! Your humility is very admirable and I just can't tell you how wonderful it is to see that trait. But trust me: I believe you're a lot higher than a 5. You try, and you try hard! Showing a penchant for that, you will always be getting yourself way up higher than you were before. I mean, just earlier on today you found a way to try and improvise on an unusual interaction and you tried to make it work and also sound reasonable. I could sense though that you were keeping other people in mind throughout the course of this fun little "Yes, and...", given your position then as a medical doctor (so, sorry for holding you up there! ;P). And speaking of that interaction then, I asked you afterwards what you were anticipating given the whole dodgy antag-ambush setup it all seemed to be like. You said you were expecting me to attack you, yet you still accepted that whatever happened happened. In fact, that reminds me of previous times I've seen you where you usually just went along and played ball. It wasn't about winning some silly little game — what is there really to prove in that, and what good comes out of yourself as a person, as do you feel? No, I can tell (or so I think) you're in it more for the creativity than for 'winning' by the game mechanics. Because winning to you is about the fun and creativity that can come out of all this in the meantime, isn't it? I've seen your characters and I think I can see you actively trying to bring new things to the table: I seriously think that is yet all the more a great reason as to why you should get head of staff. Now, with that said. We have our lovely peers that have shared their thoughts with you. I assume you already have an idea as to what you feel you could do to try and improve. Remember: it's your choice in the end on how you want to go about it. Only you truly know. If you still want some sort of opinion from me: I will agree about the 'snowflakey' thing; I'm sure you worked hard on it, and it's still all right. But believe me when I say: you do not need any 'snowflaking' or 'snowflake backgrounds'. It is still fairly interesting as is, but... yeah... Try and do what you can. If you need tips, ask for tips — you do that already! Just bear in mind that that's what they are. Don't want to railroad you into anything. I can also see where you're coming from in regards to the 'too many skills' thing. But you recognise it and personally, I think you might just find it a lot more fun if you allow yourself to cut back a bit, even if you do have the justification of being synthetic. And I don't mean fun just for yourself, but also for others: if you think about it in terms of MMORPGs or TTRPGs do, people in a party play a role, and it's better to specialise in the end than to spread out too far (although where that 'threshold' is, however, I cannot say) — but hey, you said it yourself in your given definition of 'roleplay'. I find that fun, in this sense, could last a lot longer if you pace yourself a bit than to burn yourself out, speaking from my mind playing this game hooked like a crack junkie for nearly a decade now. BUT: you play it the way you think you should play it. No-one should have to make you feel like you absolutely have to do something. You know yourself better than anyone else. Making a story is really, really fun. Being able to make that story with others? Even better. And what better to help it go along if you feel confident to take up the role as a head of staff? However way you go about them if you do, they can be used in all sorts of different ways in the game. They can be involved or introduce all sorts of different scenarios and can play roles in all sorts of narratives. I said this quite a bit before and I'll say it again now: the little things can count. Or along as I would put it: "The subtleties count." Depth. Breadth. In regards to your definitions of what a whitelisted player should do: yes. That I would say is a very robust attitude to have. Like, VERY. Nothing more needs to be said. Or at the very least not that I can feel right now. You're a friend to everyone, Stryker, and I would really hope to see you as a head of staff. You try, you keep on trying, and you keep on going having fun whichever way you go. Just bear in mind that this is only coming from me. -- I might come back to this post a little later on because right now I should be long asleep. Jet lag conditions and all. But as it is, it is as it is. Knowing me I'll come back like I am again now thinking how cheesy all this is but it is what it is. Things are cheesy and cliché for a reason.
  18. Hey all, robo-mum Ashley Paynter's (#respect yo) player here. It's probably a tad bit late to offer up my couple of pennies but here goes. Firstly, I'm not complaining. Secondly, I'm probably going to sound like some sort of hippie peacelover. Third, I'm not going to mention it often this post, but think about the word 'vengeance'- and also don't apply that to my post, because that's never what I will go for as a player when playing a game here. At some point, I'm going to start talking not just about this round, but rounds in general, and even the game, or the fact that it's a game, and probably real life applications. If it ends up being a problem I'm sorry, but I just feel it appropriate to add this. I have always said that I don't really like contributing to forums because I always get this sort of 'psychological force' that just deters me from doing this sort of stuff; being asked to see what I have to say is something that has always been quite hard for me to do so it always takes me time to try and express what I want to say. I also often tend to get mixing, sometimes conflicting viewpoints and opinions on things, as a forewarning. I'm not adopting any sort of accusative tone here when I say this: I think I do remember now why I don't really contribute that often to forums, and that's because of drama. Just posting this already I almost feel like I'm adding to drama. It's a big post after all. I don't mean to sidetrack here a bit but this is just something I'd like to get out of the way first. I don't like how drama happens in games like these because I personally think it's stupid to choose to get so kicked up over it because you're choosing to make yourself suffer when you can choose not to. It's funny though because this would be my first post on these forums -- something on a 'player complaint'. Likewise, I'm not mad. At all. And to be honest, I really don't care anymore if I do die. Plus, I got to see some pretty funky stuff from the other players' actions. I'm going to offer my side of thinking during game time: I can easily tell or predict what game mode it is as early as about a minute I join into the round, even if it's mid-round — it's the little things that give them away. Names, announcements, behaviours, dialogue. Intentional or not. I don't like how I can do it but I do, so I try very hard to push it to the back of my mind — which I can do quite successfully most of the time so that I actually, literally end up forgetting what game mode it is — until it surfaces up again. When it does surface up I try my best to keep that train going and that boat rocking: I try to take actions that I feel would not cut off the antagonist too quickly so that they can carry out whatever they're planning; stating this as a general statement and not meaning to point fingers here or shame anyone, but even if that means I get 'ganked' (a term of which I feel its definition is mostly subjective and thus varies greatly) then I'm totally fine with that. After all, death can potentially add to the atmosphere and tenor of the story. Role play, to me, is about players getting together to craft a story. And we should be having fun, right? That's what games are for. We're still people though and we have slightly different ways of having fun, and I can understand why people would be upset because that fun, to them, is being taken away from them. Likewise, I knew pretty quickly it was malfunction so I tried to think about what I could do to NOT blow the whistles too quickly. When the captain approached me asking me to take a look at Big Brother's programming and behaviour, I reasoned that it would, ICly, be relatively logical to do so. The thing I WASN'T doing though, was looking at your law set. Paynter was thinking more about personality quirks and such, not laws, when it comes to this sort of stuff. When I arrived to the AI Upload, Big Brother, if I recall correctly, flickered to life on the holopad after I was lingering around for a while (with Dina Hegarty at the time) and stated something like "You are here to inspect my laws. Stop dabbling about." At this point I wanted to express that I actually didn't want to inspect laws but instead come up with some RP mumbo-jumbo voodoo magic while in the AI Upload and then be off on my way (or not, depending on how it went ) but the round kept ticking and the train kept going so I didn't really find the opportunity. Anyhow, we entered the AI Upload foyer, and then the scary stuff of being surrounded by security units and then getting beaten up yadda yadda dead. (I found it cool when they showed up on opposite sides and the doors opened and the lights flickered.) Don't get me wrong, but I kind of predicted a fairly strong chance of this happening about three minutes into the round, gradually stronger as time went on. But I don't feel it right to blame anyone here. Just to clarify, for future reference mayhaps: I'm not robust on this server. It's not the same for me, this movement and ticklag. Somehow it's too slow and fast at the same time, but mostly too slow for my senses and in toto I'm just not that great. Which is fine by me because that's a great change of scenery; I impose these aspects onto my characters when I play them. Ashley Paynter is weak. If this was a TTRPG, she would have like 2 or 3 dumped attributes: constitution, strength, and in some cases dexterity and wisdom. I like to RP any injuries/conditions/ailments/whatever negative thing that my characters receive — Paynter especially — for a longer period of time, because I think, in my opinion, the game makes them go away too quickly and people just seem to recuperate in the snap of the finger, potentially. I'm willing to play ball anytime if you want. Likewise, I let myself get beat up. I mean, Paynter was probably focused on the fact that she just got the wind and lights knocked out of her so maybe the term 'surrender' has a slightly different connotation than how I would try to describe the IC scenario, but anyways. I deliberately don't cry out anything on the radio because I feel that, realistically, that wouldn't be have a decent probability of happening. At the very least, not with my characters. I do this because I want to let people have the chance to do something, and perhaps even face something slightly different in comparison to someone who would put up more resistance. I've been playing this game for many years and I just want to see something different happen and I want to see people get creative. Most of the time I feel like every round to me is just the same thing, so I get incredibly happy and impressed whenever someone does something just slightly different and I see something new. Don't get me wrong, the 'same stuff' I perceive can be interesting too: I experienced it for myself on multiple occasions. It's different when you're looking at something from the inside rather than the outside. That's why I try to be careful not to be so imposing of certain scenarios or situations: when I RP, I don't want people to feel like I'm imposing something on them, that I'm forcing them to do something. In the end, I actually want them to react in how THEY feel their characters should: if that's getting my stuff imposed on their characters then fine, that's their choice. As long as they're having fun. I have fun when other people are having fun. I mean, I can still be fine with the 'same stuff' going on, but just to put it, I'm like a sparkly princess waiting in a tower and enjoying the view and the tower. But I also want a bit of a thrill to happen — something different. Again, if people are having fun with that, then fine. So I get lased. Okay, that's fine with me, genuinely. If I die I die. Oh well, who cares? I shouldn't. Besides, the game was a lot harsher in the past when it came to death. Up to the point where you had absolutely no chance of getting back into the game by normal means until a new one started. Apart from respawn: I think that might've existed then. I'm still not complaining and I will never intend to for this situation and for hopefully everything else that happens in the future. But that doesn't stop me from feeling somewhat concerned because I think, "What if this was someone else not like me?" My concern is that someone else will take it differently, and apparently and, well, quite predictably, they did. But my concern isn't just on Youbar. I tend to feel concerned — perhaps I can even call it to an extent a sense of pity — about the people who feel angry and whatever negative emotions that come out because they've been affected. I mean, I knew that even if I didn't make Paynter cry out or make it evident she was in trouble, I knew people would find out and get suspicious very soon afterwards. I was more worried about what would, and in fact what did happen next. I don't like how there's all this drama. I don't like this complaining and I don't like how this thread has been opened. But I think I understand why it does. I also think that this is a cycle. I see it as a cycle, and guaranteed people are going to be upset in the future over something in the game. To always be so upset, to me, is just not a good thing to have in general. Like, in real life. I think this is a cycle because I find that people are still choosing to react the same way. I kinda tried to express what I've been meaning on deadchat that round to people but I got the impression people disagreed with me. People were discussing what I could've/should've done to prevent this and that, and that I should be 'standing up' to this sort of stuff. I also see people saying how they should do this and that in preparation and then justify how it's not 'powergaming' and 'metagaming' and whatever. I mean, it was still really cool that people avoided doing it for most of the time that I could tell. Look, guys, gals, and others, I just think there's a better way to handle this instead of always this complaining and drama. It's a bloody game. You might feel you've had your fun taken from you but are you really going to continue to let that happen by kicking up all this fuss and adopting the same tactics over and over? I often think that part of the reason why this is still happening is because we're still not choosing to change something. I also think that there's this sort of 'lack of trust', this 'tension' when it comes to antagonists and non-antagonists. This sort of "Who's going to pull the trigger first? Who's going to make this shitty? Should I do something to stop that happening? What if they do something?" Like, antagonists doing pushing to do something because they're afraid they're going to get cut off. I mean, people are always discussing "Right, I'm gonna get the emitter." and all that and then I see the AIs going "I was afraid that was going to happen so I acted this way." It's like we're not, in the end, making the decision for ourselves and how we want to make fun. Beautiful things can happen but we're still, at times, choosing not to make it happen. I could be wrong. I probably am, but I can't help but feel like this because I've never seen anything else but this for so many years — and not just in SS13, mind you. I'm not saying "Don't complain." or "Take down these boards." — we're all humans after all and this can be how we are. Maybe it's just how I view people viewing the word 'complaint'; threads and such on this board are probably needed for the server and the players. It's just that it's saddening to me to see all this drama, and so often. Especially, to emphasise even more, in a game. I see people saying stuff like "Okay, the next time I come across this player — because I know this player and what they're like now — I'm not going to take any chances/RP/be nice anymore." To me I think that doesn't help the problem. At all. If anything, it can contribute to it. This behaviour just isn't right, in my opinion. What happens if this just becomes such a thing? Will it start to be sort of 'ingrained' into the players' mindsets to do this stuff? What happens when it's their turn to be someone else in the game? What happens when they're the antagonist? We'll have different perspectives on how it goes, and yes, it doesn't mean it will happen. I mean, we've had what the people call 'good rounds'. I'm just going to reiterate: it's just sad. We seem, to me, like we're stuck in place and in this cycle. I'm not going to complain against Youbar or their actions. All I want to say is that I'm generally concerned for everyone because of everyone. Don't get me wrong. I do also feel that the round could've gone a lot 'better'. I can't make people just behave the way 'I would want to' because that would just... no. I want people to think about what they do, but I want people to also not be so worked up and rigorous, if I'm using the right words. And if that makes sense. I tend to lose steam when trying to express what I'm trying to say. Again, sorry for the late response. 'Vengeance' is probably too much of a powerful word to use when it can be interpreted as something like 'justice'. If you want to 'punish', I did suggest on deadchat that you can still do that while maintaining the RP and perhaps through doing so encourage the thing you want to see happen. But I got a reply saying that it won't work, it's so much effort, it takes a lot of time and resources, and that I don't understand what it's like for the staff and what it's like being a member of staff (or at least, that last clause is the impression I got about the meaning of it with one of the responses.) No, I don't, because I'm not a member of staff and I can only speak from my mind. I do want to say though that I've been playing for a long time now, I've been staff, I've handled my own server. I've been there, at least to some extent. I believe that contrary to those beliefs, it can still be done. Even with one person — you can be a whole lot more capable than you might think you are. Sorry for the somewhat inserted sidetracking and inserted derailing of the particular topic at hand. If it's too much against the rules and going off track a bit then uh, oops. Sorry for the probably gibberish'd stuff and conflicting logic — this is just me at times. I kind of get the feeling now after writing and then checking and then making some additions like some sort of fool, especially in my current conditions. Plus, I can handle travelling halfway across the entire planet to a destination but not from a destination. Waking up extremely late, tennis first thing. Probably not in the best state to respond, but there you go. I read people trying to play good sports. In that regard I do hope people keep that up. You don't need to stop. We can still be good sports. I just hope you (plural) understand what I'm trying to get across here. No-one's obliged to agree with me, but this is just how I feel myself. You're perfectly entitled to your own opinions. Maybe this, and no doubt any of these ones addressing something else in the future, are needed after all. But to draw it up: no complaints from me, it's totally cool, please be careful. Have fun. Being an antagonist can also be tricky. There's also the fact that not everyone can be happy about something. Anyways, I'll most definitely still look forward to playing with you and you all here.
