What would you like to see in a combined bar and kitchen?

I'm considering mapping out a combined bar and kitchen, so that there's just one place for bored people to RP people to congregate in, instead of two.  What would you like to see in such a rework?

Suggestions I've heard or thought of so far:

  • A proper club, with a dance floor
  • Bar with no seats
  • A proper restaurant, with waitstaff and all - back kitchen, front register/desk, large seating area
  • A line setup at the front desk, so people are encouraged to find a table and sit down
  • EFTPOS being already setup
  • 1x1 and 2x2 (or more?) tables
  • A stage (and job slot(s)) for a proper entertainer (not memey clowns and mimes) with rails and custom lighting
  • Customizable lighting (we have all these different colors of light tubes but they never get used : ( )

Edit:  here's my map so far.

Three things from me

Would the combined area take up the whole footprint that they took up separately?

Having a wait staff would be pretty epic, though I'm sure some people would say "But muh research station, not a resort."

The layout of the tables in the bar always bugged me, so this is a perfect time to get that right as well.

I always wanted to see a kitchen with a conveyor belt loop setup. That way it would look like one of those sushi restaurants that keep circling around their food!

Has been discussed in the past and I cannot remember why it got dismissed (more than once) but in my opinion it's perfect. Rented out franchise space on a NT station, everyone wins. Can be used to plug some (fast) food lore, too. Big clap from me +100

Would it also make sense to move the "opening" of the bar/kitchen onto the central hallway ring, where Hydroponics is currently, so that it's more visible and also closer to the holodeck?

Absolutely. The entrance right now is out of the way for most people. Well, the "real entrance" to the bar anyway. I wouldnt mind swapping places with hydro, to be honest. Makes more sense for this to be closer to the central ring as hydro.

I think it'd be cool if we have a food court-ish setting where both the bar and kitchen pour into a central dining area.

We could even consider shrinking down the entire bar area into a communal dining area. Would spur bar-goers to interact with the chef crowd provided the chairs/tables are close enough.

Firstly to shrink it down, half the dining area is nearly never used and ends up being wasted space that contributes to the middle of it being stupidly dark (for lack of ceiling lighting in this game).

Past that, I enjoy more utilitarian diner looks. A great (if outdated) example being the food+bar on Donut 2.

Something compact that still retains a fair amount of seating, centralizes the counter but still has a couple private tables (not too many as they're not too commonly used) and understands the appeal of a 2 seat private table. This also allows for better coordination between the Bartender (whom now doubles as a waiter) and the Chef, if the Chef prefers not to take the orders themself.

Above all, make it small. You should be able to see the entire eating/drinking area on a single screen. Our current stage is already never used past people grabbing megaphones from it, and similarly no one would really ever dance nor want their dining/drinking experience to be sullied by inappropriately behaving crew. Leave the club and theatre experiences to the holodeck which can accommodate those sorts of events.

I agree with Carver's and wowzewow's posts. Personally, I would style the place as a diner: a main counter where people can sit and eat, retain the booths along the walls, and have a few small individual tables.  More or less the same thing as the Bar right now, but it definitely needs to be smaller. The persons working the counter should be able to see the majority of the dining area. I think a casual, practical, no-frills dining experience is most fitting for the station. It can still serve good food but it doesn't need to be fancy about it. The bartenders and cooks can serve as waitstaff as needed, the cooks already have waiter uniforms in their closet that they can wear if they wish. If you want to push a serving role, just add "waiter" as an alt-title to bartender.

A stage/dancefloor is unnecessary, practically no one has performances to put on, and if they did they're better off in the central holodeck because most of the Bar can't even see the stage, bad set-up for a stand-up comedy routine or music performance. Toss it out. Most people who want to try being an "entertainer" will just use the entertainment radio channel anyway.

Moving the entrance closer to the center of the main level is a great idea too, I support that.

Also get ride of that phonograph and put a proper jukebox in. Place needs more variety in tunes! They can order a phonograph from Cargo if they want it back.

@niennab It does feel like that a bit, yeah, but then again one could argue the same for basically anything related to mapping before NBT.  It'll be several months-ish before NBT comes out, anyways, and we'll be playing on the Aurora during that time.

I like that second one quite a bit. Functional, aesthetically pleasing, has private places on the rare occasions players would want one. I think it could work nicely.

If we're going with the second pic, I think we should move both sit-down tables one square to the right and the upper one, one square down. Makes it feel less tucked away IMO.(Can't leave from the bootom left chair if there are 4 people sitting down)

Here's an update of how I've been doing it, in conversations with others on discord.

Might even be able to turn those walls in the small private room into tinted glass so you can darken and lighten it on command!

I'd say replace the stage area with more private seating. Again, no need for it when the holodeck exists and already has a stage setting in a far more central area - and it's rather awkward that there's exactly one private seating area.

Also: Put a SmartHeater in one of these two spots (or somewhere else if you take my above advice), the chef needs one.

Wonder if I should add more music to the jukebox?  Like this playlist?

Or perhaps some of the Fallout 3-NV-4 music?  Just imagine Big Iron playing...

If it were my server and I didn't have to worry about copyright, I would shove in a bunch of songs from the Cowboy Bebop soundtrack, for all that wonderful space jazz and space country.

But it probably is best to stick to oldies. I support any music additions that can be done at all since the jukebox is pretty limited.

...wait. You can add music to the jukeboxes?! Hardest +1 I have ever given. It'll maybe actually create an atmosphere then instead of...
