kyres1 Posted March 2, 2021 Posted March 2, 2021 This is the last major infinity stone to ensure my (almost) total sprite dominance over the suit sprites of the server. Sadly, some evil, villainous force known as players decided to do the worst they could muster ; politely and correctly ask for a feedback thread on sprites they believed to be controversial and potentially a net negative addition to the game. The sprites redone are in the following order ; TCFL suits + EVA suit Hazard + CE suit Some explanation for the spriting direction ; 1. The stylistic direction was altered to match current suit sprites, of which it does, probably. Pending input, duh. 2. The colors take on a much more vibrant, less muted tone, intentional especially with full-body apparel to maintain distinct characters from dull backgrounds. For the individual suits ; TCFL suit : Takes on a slightly more understandable appearance, less cluttered and ultimately looks like a vest with pauldrons slapped on (which it is.) EVA suit : Maintains the sort-of duller stylistic choice of the EVA suit to contrast the shiny polish of the CE suit - the direct superior option bar rad shielding. Hazard suit : Dull red. Looks like old redsec, and looks both older and meaner. The previous sprite looked chunky and a little out of place due to its shiny polish. CE suit : Shiny, as God intended. Cnaym Posted March 2, 2021 Posted March 2, 2021 (edited) Fix it. ? Not a fan, looks washed out to me, lack of details. May be just my screen but I have already taken to calling the red one turd colored ICly. Maybe it's just me but the faction suits got some amazing designs while the others seem to be more of single colored blobs to me. Probably going to ignore it as most sprite changes since it finally comes down to personal flavor. If I had to buy them I'd take the TCFL one and use the CE suit as the EVA one instead. The EVA one looks like another softsuit to me and the hazard one is missing it's dangerous vibes completly. Art is hard, I do not usually comment on it. So, as said before, I really like how "industrial" the hazard and EVA suits look(I especially like how the visor thing looks on the former), this very clearly is some top-notch work. I think the CE's suit needs a bit of touching up, though. I get that it's supposed to be the more high-tech option, naturally, has all the fancy gear and such to make you feel like an engineering god. However, with its current color, it gets really close to the regular engineering suit in appearance. With the current sprites, you see the white hardsuit in a low-light environment(like half the breaches we patch up because we keep all our welding tanks in maint for some ungodly reason), you can instantly go "Yep, that's the Chief right there." With this current color, you have to spend a moment trying to determine "Is it the Chief, or just a regular engineer?" I'm not sure if you were originally going for white, but it could seem like a good color to differentiate the two while still preserving the shiny. As for the hardhat, my point still stands. It feels like a rather silly thing to add and doesn't feel as grounded as the other two I've brought up. The rest of the suit looks plenty "sleek", the design of the helmet just makes it fall flat, and I'd honestly pick wearing the regular EVA suit over this one any time, no matter the mechanical advantages. Plus, everyone knows engineers are never meant to wear anything looking like a hardhat after spawning in! Maybe try removing the "brim" and adjusting the shape of the visor so that it still keeps a unique look?
Carver Posted March 2, 2021 Posted March 2, 2021 Simplistic direction, but good details. I like these well enough, nothing immediately negative springs to mind (unless you count thunder thighs as a negative thought).
WickedCybs Posted March 2, 2021 Posted March 2, 2021 The hardhat aesthetic on the CE rig is very cool and I'd be pretty sad if it was removed. Rest of the sprites look well enough to me and I'll hope to see the changes in game soon.
Sparky_hotdog Posted March 2, 2021 Posted March 2, 2021 The TCLF one looks great, though something about the blue highlights and the white strip at the top of the helmet seems to meld together. It's not massive, and it might not be the reason I've come up with, but the white strip is way to hard for my brain to pick out from the blue helmet. The EVA suit is great. It's yellow, it's industrious, it has a cool visor. I look at that and immediately think "There guys are here to do some engineering" The Hazard suit shape wise I love. The yellow strips on the helmet are cool, the three-part control module is something that looks unique and entirely believable, the chunky looking leg pads are great too, and did I say the EVA suit had a cool visor? Because the Hazard one's on a new level. Only critique would be the colour; It looks fine against the pink background, but against the grey floor it does look more muted/maroon than I'd expect. The CE rig follows a similar path to the Hazard suit for me. The design is great, and as Cybs said, the hardhat look both makes sense and is awesome. But the colour feels both too bright, and too close to the EVA suit. As Redshirt said, it doesn't seem like it would stand out from other engineers at a quick glance. If you were intent on keeping the gold/yellow aesthetic, maybe a coloured patch on a shoulder or something just to make it distinguishable would be nice. All in all though, great sprites that I can't wait to see in game.
Zelmana Posted March 2, 2021 Posted March 2, 2021 I like the shapes on these, but I fear the dull brown hardsuit for the hazard is off. If it is a hazard (on an asteroid)- wouldn't we want something high vis? Not mute colors that blend in with hematite. Boost the red?
Shenaanigans Posted March 2, 2021 Posted March 2, 2021 I like these a lot! Very visually pleasing colors with enough detail to be distinct without looking overly busy. The only criticism I have is geared toward the TCFL suits, specifically the amount of colors in the helmets. I like that they're colorful, but I think they would do better with the neon green taken out or replaced with a cyan hue since the combination of red, yellow, blue, and green all in one small area clashes a bit to me.
