Pedantic's Command Whitelist App

Recommended Posts

BYOND key: Pedantic11

Character names:

-          Mariana Oritz

-          Xu Xianliang

-          Akila Musan

-          Halina Na’Baal

-          Njoki Mostafa

-          D0-N1

How long have you been playing on Aurora?:

Roughly eight months, or since the tail end of the KOTW arc.

Why do you wish to be on the whitelist?:

Primarily, I want to have more of an impact on rounds, as well as to be able to help newer players become familiar with Aurora’s systems, especially brainmed. Other than that, just being able to give some departments a bit more direction while supporting others’ roleplay would be a good way to get more involved in the server and community.

Why did you come to Aurora?:

I’m a refugee from TG initially, wanting a bit more structure and rules of engagement in a round. I spent too many games ghosted in the first ten minutes just because someone wanted my keycard and decided to husk me on the spot. Aside from that, I like how events from one round can carry over to others, even if only those that don’t involve an antag.

Have you read the Aurora wiki on the head roles and qualifications you plan on playing?:

I have.

Have you received any administrative actions? And how serious were they?

The most I’ve received have been warnings, once on Halina to fit within the ability requirements of a role (speech for all engineering staff). The second was due to me breaking realism and attacking an armed and armored antag while being unarmed while playing Mariana. The last warning was while playing Xu, and accidentally causing several instant deaths using the mobile apiary, which has thankfully been fixed. I’ve never had a job ban or temp ban, nor lasting administrative actions.

Please provide well articulated answers to the following questions in a paragraph each.

Give a definition of what you think roleplay is, and should be about:

On the Aurora server, roleplay has two components: Interpersonal and Reactionary, both with the overall goal of interactions with other characters and playing through the effects of those interactions. Interpersonal is simply day to day interactions, speaking and sharing stories with one another to promote or solidify a character’s story, forming links with others and generally just ‘being people.’ The reactionary component is how these characters then behave when put into high stress or dangerous situations, such as those presented by antagonists, allowing them to draw on their existing skillsets and social links in creative ways. Together, these components allow for a wide range of characters to come into the field, creating a fabric of different stories from their interactions and cementing an engaging experience. That is, at the end of the day, the end goal of an HRP server: to have that web of connections and witness how it responds in different ways.

What do you think the OOC purpose of a Head of Staff is, ingame?:

OOC, the Heads are meant to provide direction and training to their staff, as well as to fill in for positions that are missing in the manifest. The nature of this can change depending on the department- for instance, the Research Director will likely not need to provide much overall direction to their staff, but they will need to provide oversight and ensure the safety of those staffers. Heads can also serve as secondary, non-violent antagonists depending on the role and their relationship with the crew. For instance, the Head of Personnel could prioritize maximizing profits, which would in turn drive a story for those under their command as well as the rest of the station. Finally, Heads are also supposed to coordinate the station’s response to antag activities and random events to the best of their ability.

What do you think the OOC responsibilities of Whitelisted players are to other players, and how would you strive to uphold them?:

I would say the biggest responsibility would be to try to give the players the best round you can, within the confines of your role. This would mean not isolating players (Antags included), as that reduces their ability to interact with others, hurting the roleplay aspect they came to Aurora to begin with. Additionally, taking steps to ensure a player can stay in the round (not dead, sedated, or otherwise black-screened) is a part of that responsibility.  Other than that, you’re the first character most new players will go to with questions, and its your job to do your best to answer them.

Could you give us the gist of what is currently happening in Tau Ceti and how it affected your character and their career?

Following the events of the Second Solarian Invasion, the Republic of Biesel has expanded rapidly, fueled in part by the cooperation between the member companies of the SCC. Resources have been stretched thin as dozens of systems have been brought under Mendel’s control, with frequent incursions from the new Human Wildlands. In response, the Republic (and by extension, Nanotransen) has been coordinating diplomatic efforts with some of the Solarian Successor States to secure its western border, as well as furthering ties with the Coalition of Colonies and the Serene Republic of Elyra. Now, the Republic is dealing with a refugee crisis as hundreds of thousands of dissidents flee the Jargon Federation, all under the pressure of an ongoing phoron shortage.

As for the characters and their careers, Tian Zhao has managed to wrestle a ranking medical position with Nanotransen to further the influence of House Zhao in the megacorporation, with the aim to improve technological exchanges, perhaps even leveraging the uncertain position of the Republic’s new border regions to help secure this assistance. Additionally, due to the shortage, Nanotransen has produced several new Analysis and Discovery Frames, one of which with the designation AD-14X (“Ajax”) to be deployed to the NSS Aurora to help manage the division’s scientific efforts.

What roles do you plan on playing after the application is accepted?

I plan to play Chief Medical Officer and Research Director, since those are the two departments, I am most comfortable with. I may branch out to Chief Engineer, but I doubt I’ll explore the other Departments before I’ve spent more time in them.

Characters you intend to use for command or have created for command. Include the job they will be taking.:

-Tian Zhao (New Character): Chief Medical Officer

-A-14X (New Character): Research Director

How would you rate your own roleplaying?:

I would say I rate at around a seven, maaaaybe an eight on a really good day. I tend to avoid writing intricate, complicated backstories for my characters when they’re first made, instead organically growing it based on their interactions. This does mean that initially they may be rather dull, or just have large holes in their story that I haven’t filled yet. But, I like using this method because it allows me to easily adjust their story to better fit with the regulars they interact with, leading to more interesting character moments overall. It does sometimes fall flat, which I usually solve by rewriting a character that is young enough (As in, no one really remembers them) for it, or dropping in another using the lessons learned from the previous one. In command roles, the second will likely be more viable, since Heads tend to stick out a bit.

Do you understand your whitelist is not permanent, and may be stripped following continuous administrative action?

I do.

Have you familiarized yourself with the wiki pages for the command roles?

I have.

Extra notes:

Nothing really comes to mind.

WOO MORE CMO PLAYERS, Ortiz is a great character, and i love Musan aswell great dreg mixer, great medical player, i think you would do very well in command. Also we need more CMO's.

your characters feel real, and have depth and backstory to them, furthermore any and all OOC contact i've had with you has been chill, you're fun to be around.

+1 from me.

There are just plenty of good things I can say about Pedantic, and I've been pushing them to make this application for long now. I really believe they'd do a great job, and would trust a medical bay ran by their characters.

Just played a round with Sofia, A CMO, and I thought Pedantic's roleplay was interesting and fun. I was playing as the captain, and from what I could gather they seemed to be running medical well, roleplaying neatly with patients, and even had to work out an embarrassing situation where they were sprayed with mindbreaker. They were able to pull it off both humorously and gracefully, demonstrating a strong maturity in roleplay and range in ability. Definitely a +1 from me.

I taught Pedantic a lot of medical, back from when they were super new. When I play command, I very regularly make their character Yhara's 'deputy' to ensure medical runs smoothly while I take care of other command matters. I have no doubt they would do well in command.
