CourierBravo Posted April 20 Posted April 20 I've had to explain what this server is to several people now, and trying to describe it to people not in the know has been incredibly painful because there's not really a name for this setting. its just "The setting Aurora Station takes place in." What should be a 1 or 2 sentence explanation quickly turns into a paragraph or two of very clunky explaining. Maybe its a skill issue on my part, but I'd like to see some kind of Name for this setting. It could be something dorky like The Phoron Eclipse or The Orion Chronicals. or something. It could also be something really simple like "The Expanse" 's title for example. I just would like a much more catchy name than "Aurorastation's lore", y'know? Quote
Tex-Mex Posted April 20 Posted April 20 I've always just referred to the setting as the Orion Spur. The server as a whole is just Aurora. 3 Quote

"Aurora" or "The Aurora setting" doesn't roll off the tongue, or create any kind of hook. 1 minute ago, Tex-Mex said: I've always just referred to the setting as the Orion Spur. When I talk about Aurora lore, I simply call it Aurora lore. I don't call it Spur lore or Phoron lore. The most uniquely Aurora title is Aurora. Quote

It doesn't really do anything for anyone else. Additionally, Aurora doesn't really fit anymore, we haven't been on the Aurora in years now. I don't see any indication that we'd return to a station style of gameplay either. Quote
Mr.Popper Posted April 20 Posted April 20 It's technically antiquated with the removal of NSS Aurora, but I like to think "Aurora" refers to the Spur as a whole. The real aurora is the friends we made along the way, or something Quote

It rolls of the tongue badly, at least for me. "Aurora Station" rolls off way better, but that's a pretty antiquated name for it at this point. Something like "The Horizon" could work? It keeps in the current convention, and it rolls off better. Quote
Ricky_the_banshee Posted April 21 Posted April 21 (edited) Idk. The Orion Spur has always worked, or just referring to the server as 'Aurora'. I can understand that it's not entirely specific, since Orion Spur is simply the name of the setting or 'setting's location', whereas Aurora refers to the station which we have long departed from, but it works. They're identifiers to our unique setting, and I think the wiki itself does a fine job explaining what our setting is. Edited April 21 by Ricky_the_banshee 1 Quote
SinfulBehaviors Posted April 21 Posted April 21 She's got a point. It is a little strange that the entire lore is "Aurora" or "Aurora Station" when, first, the Aurora is a very tiny piece of the lore, and second, the titular station has been decommissioned for a while. The main issue is that when we say Aurora to each other, we know what the person means. If we do it to other people, they're clueless. It's not the most pressing of issues, but I can see why someone would want a better name. Quote
Rabid Animal Posted April 21 Posted April 21 I kind of agree Aurora is fine. "I was playing on Aurora-" "Aurora lore is like-" These aren't difficult things to say, its how all ss13 servers are identified, but I mean you could easily just say the spur or the horizon instead? Quote
Butterrobber202 Posted April 21 Posted April 21 We didn't change the server name when we were on the Exodus, and we didn't while we were on the Horizon. We're Aurora. 2 Quote

Aurora is more than just a station, as it were. I don't think we'd lose anything cutting the 'station' part from the server title if that helps mitigate confusion, but overall I have never seen anyone refer to the setting or server as anything but Aurora, and never 'Aurora Station'. At this point the word 'station' is probably just kept for the sake of the forums. 1 hour ago, Butterrobber202 said: We didn't change the server name when we were on the Exodus, and we didn't while we were on the Horizon. CatsinHD Posted April 21 Posted April 21 I mean, I don't think I've personally come across a situation where I've needed a catch-all term for Aurora's lore when talking with someone outside of the community (and explaining it is worthy of a 5 page paper at this point). But, as much as I meme around with the name Auroraverse, I do sometimes use it unironically, just mostly within the community. As for the name... yeah, let's just cut off the station portion of the name. Aurora has become our server identity at this point, I don't see any reason to keep the station portion if we've gone to a ship anyways. Plus, we can finally obliterate the Horizonship meme. 1 Quote
dessysalta Posted April 21 Posted April 21 I'm pretty sure ive heard one or more lore devs call the Auroraverse a "corporate dystopia", so if you absolutely need a descriptor then that's your starting point really. It's a sci fi corporate dystopian setting with inspiration from real world events and unique takes on species and their portrayal. Quote
Sniblet Posted April 21 Posted April 21 (edited) I’m not sure what this is asking for. OOC, it’s called Aurora. IC, it’s called the Spur. Do you want a third name for clarity? Like a subtitle? Is Aurora: The Phoron Eclipse an improvement? How would that help your friends understand what you’re talking about? Most speculative fiction settings are hard to explain by title/subtitle alone. Star Wars is called Star Wars; its setting is called the Star Wars galaxy. If you found someone who didn’t know what Star Wars was and said “Star Wars” to them, they wouldn’t have an accurate image of Star Wars in their head. “Star Wars: Attack of the Clones” or “Star Wars: Return of the Jedi” are still opaque. Is it that you want something at least more descriptive, as Star Wars is - a starting point for the first sentence, e.g. “Aurora is about…” vs “Star Wars is about a war in the stars?” In fairness, Aurora is kind of abstract. But so are Dune, Amnesia, IT, Firefly, xkcd, Horizon: Zero Dawn, Fate, and Peanuts. You could still explain those to a friend. If you’re having trouble getting Aurora across, I don’t think you can pin it on the title so much as the fact that it has no main cast and is the product of dozens of artistic visions that at no point came entirely together to say, “THIS will be our theme.” It’s an open-source writing project. Every day we keep hold of “corporate dystopia” is another miracle. Edited April 21 by Sniblet 1 Quote
wowzewow Posted April 23 Posted April 23 (edited) Unfortunately "Corporate Dystopia" isn't even particularly uniquely Auroran - this applies mostly to every other SS13 server as well, from the fact that majority of server lore branched out from the original Nanotrasen Megacorporate Goon lore. (Hell, I even think Eris done it better, because it's a literal anarcho-capitalist society where everyone has guns and what-not) Ironically, our corporate lore is the most neglected out of all of the other lore comparatively, and is further diluted by all the other planet and species lore. Not like that's a bad thing, but that's just how it is. Edited April 23 by wowzewow 1 Quote
