Funny thing is Cassie, I noticed this thread can be interpreted as passive aggressive after I posted it. But really I generally prefer to stay brief unless I'm elaborating and I chose to do it in a way that amused me. Just poking fun at the server's diction. Also, don't quote me on this but I think Jakers made his thread because of this thread.
-
I have no interest in discussing it, pointing fingers, finding the root cause and all that. Just asking everybody to not.
-
So I'll quote a famous quote on this server. "Let's not." Thanks.
-
That was quite the story.

And plasma is used for the travel, right? I read on the wiki that plasma revitalized space travel but doesn't specify. Just looking for clarification here.
-
Saved. Is bluespace a mainstream use for extended travel?

How much of space is explored, and in which way? Just, point in the general direction where space is currently being discovered. And by who? For that matter, how much do we know about planets that aren't home planets? For example we're currently studying the atmospheres and soil composition of other planets, Mars being a focus. How much of that information do we know about the planets around us? Another question. Do we have an idea of he progress we've made in regards to terraforming?

I think that was a fair thing to do, James. People don't promote others they don't know without proper documentation and experience in their employment records that allude that maybe this person might be a good head of security. As a head of personnel I myself very rarely promote others to a command position. I generally give them a "Senior" position that tells the department that they are a subject matter expert and also have the access of their respective head positions without the command access. Even players I know. It all depends on the character. I understand that they wouldn't want to promote some random person without proper qualifications or experience. Just like in real life. If you want a higher position without proper qualification then make your character renowned. Otherwise give them some realistic records that match the job you're trying to get. We actually have an employment records template that one of the admins made somewhere on the forums. Can't quite get it for you now but it does exist.

I may have been the one to l that in another thread and in OOC. If Scopes thinks like that too then that's awesome so I'm not the only one. Skull's post made me very excited.

Honestly I'd just like some more screen variety. Myself and someone else try to pick screens that either aren't used or very rarely seen. I have no issue with them having monitors for heads. I think it's kind of funny to imagine.

I lol'd at the medbay horror stories. Those are pretty classic and they haven't gotten old for me yet. -Fucking things up I want to mess something up but I feel I'll be judged for it. And people will talk about how awful I am but I just want to do some things wrong for fun. -Scripted RP Like someone said earlier, its way too fake. It's all forced. I don't like it, no way, no how. And for the most part, awkward for me because I feel like everyone else is just forcing their characters too. -Talking on general comns I feel like that's kinda like the hangout spot for the cool kids. I have to force myself to say anything there unless it's a "heat of the moment" kind of thing. And may be surprising to everyone else considering Tina "encounters" but -Romance Like everyone else in this thread, romance in space station is weird. Im able to do it when things transition naturally and I can comfortably say, "Yep, Tina, you get it" but otherwise it seems just like scripted RP to me. Weird. And believe me I've tried to force romance on Tina but I just could not.

Haven't read the thread but I haven't integrated racism in my characters simply because it doesn't occur to me. Racial identity is pointless to me so I don't even think about it. You're right though, we need some more racists. One thing in particular that I'd like to see is racial tension still existing between different colors of humans. That's basically non existent save for griefers. I do however, see quite a bit of prejudice toward synthetics. Some of it is akin to white supremacists, others not. Honestly my view on why there isn't so much prejudice against them is rather Fruedian in nature. This is mainly because I see a decent amount of prejudice against synthetics, but I think its because they can be sexualized.

No it's not needed but it's nice to have.

But you already said taking hostages using the hostage feature is virtually useless. So we take that out of the equation. One-two punch.
-
You have two seconds to break sight as is though. And it would make sense to reflexively shoot someone if they talk into their headset. The general point of it is to take a hostage. If someone REALLY wants to get shot, okay. When thinking of hostage situations you're kind of funneling to one way of doing it. That is, stun, tie, lesbay speedstrip. The ol' one-two. I enjoy roleplaying hostage situations. I've been on both ends and I've had to shoot several people for talking. I do tell them to be quiet. I do tell them to get down. I also give them a limited time to comply before I MAKE them get down. But I would like people to fear talking into their headsets.
-
So why have the feature if it's useless?

Tip for all you powergamers: You can open the PDA while it's in your suit pocket (and probably while in the ID or belt slot) by clicking and dragging the PDA sprite info a viewable location by your character. It just opens the screen and you can do whatever without ever putting it in your hands.

Tina turns her head to face Android with a curious gaze in her eyes, darting back and forth at the brief image of the warehouse. She parts her lips to say something but hesitates, and tightens her lips in a dissatisfied grin at Android's comment about how uncool and unpopular she is and also everyone hates her and thinks she's ugly. She loses her expression of existential anguish, her expression neutral with a slightly dropped jaw - listening intently to Android's last statement. She pushes herself off the desk and looms down at her deck of oversized cards. "Well," she starts, "You'll have to tell me about how you got that later... In the meantime." She looks up from her cards and her expression turns to eminate a curious happiness and let's out a quick, shallow sigh as she holds up the back of the cards to the camera again. "Cards. You can't sully divination with greed because by nature it's centered around YOU. Or anything that takes your fancy but I would say that's greedy too. And it's not a bad thing! Greed is part of us as..." Pausing for a moment at there end of her last word, her bare lips open and her tongue stuck at the palate in her mouth. She darts her eyes quickly upward to either corner of her field of view several times before looking back at Android and furrowing her brow slightly. "Sa - Yes, sentient beings. If you just want to know " what happens" then I'll be happy to help... I'm curious as to what will happen, too. Then I'll ask what I need to know about the near future if you stay on your path." Tina closes her eyes and drops both of her hands below her desk, opting to lean against it; holding her head over it closer to the camera. She studies Android intently, her eyes scanning him behind her glasses. Her shoulders shift, clearly shuffling the cards and nothing else as she mouths her question. She remains silent for what seems like ever like wow get it over with please. She sits up once again and off the desk. Her elbows rest on it with the deck firmly in her hands. A thumb carefully feels the edge if the cards, attempting to touch every card. Tina maintains eye contact... With the monitor. On her screen. After a few seconds of card touching, she picks one and cuts the deck. Placing the deck to her left, her arms are removed from the desktop. Three cards are drawn and placed face down in front of the hot and very cool Tina. "Look at the three cards I drew. Pick the one that feels right for you."

That is my point in saying it's an "arbitrary problem".

Additionally, of course people are coming here and screaming elitism. People get their feelings hurt, they get upset because they can't do what they want. Its going to happen. We will always have people like that, there will always be people like that in the world. Its like that in many organizations, its going to happen. That's not a speculation, there's no "if", its going to happen. No matter what.

But discussions are on a need to know basis in the government and the only things discussed or told to the public are things they deem that the public needs to know. Or PR. If you're confused as to my stance on this then I'll clarify here. 1. The head of staff forum, as is, should maintain its privacy. 2. If you want to make a simple change with how it is now, to make it an effective addition and not just splitting up discussion between multiple boards then it needs to be rethought or simply, removed. Neither of which I'm against. It needs to be relabeled and redifined, split, merged into another forum, whatever. With a simple change like that it needs to be made clear the intent of the forum. The head of staff forum right now serves multiple purposes. Some of it is just for fun, some if it is more serious and some of it is IC. Which is where XanderDox's idea comes in. But it shouldn't stop there because the OOC thing would still then be redundant and because we still have the issue of fragmenting discussion or otherwise migrating discussion. So it either needs to be split AGAIN or its purpose needs to be redefined. Or both. Also, not everyone's whitelist will be accepted. So there are people who are interested. Some might be more interested than white listed players. But they can't participate anyway.
-
So why have a head of staff subforum? If freely available to see by anyone, merge it with the general forum. And why not let anyone post if anyone can see? An aspiring captain might want to inquire further or find their method questionable. They can make a post elsewhere. So once again, why have it or why have a posting restriction if not a viewing restriction? It doesn't make sense to remove the view restriction but not the post restriction with both the ideas that everyone's word is equally valuable and command can help people understand what it means to be an "officer" of a research station. In the case that command can help others, then the head of staff forum needs to be relabeled and more accurately/descriptively named. That's changing the purpose of the forum. Which I don't have a problem with. But with how the head of staff forum is to my understanding, it's hardly a thing that needs to happen. So maybe it should be relabeled and redefined?
-
That's very unnecessary, Bokaza. You're over thinking a simple situation with an arbitrary problem. If people can view but can't respind, but are free to discuss elsewhere on another subforum. Why have it? Yes they can apply for a whitelist to "contribute more directly" but that's playing into something youre against that is, white listed players have a stronger voice. We don't and your proposal only promotes the idea that we do. It makes more sense and is a much simpler solution. Nix it. Xanderdox's idea I think makes more sense and is an idea that I wouldn't mind being explored but honestly once again why have an OOC portion if that thing I said earlier?
-
So we shouldn't have a head of staff forum? I'm not advocating privacy for the purpose of "being a special player" as you're suggesting. I hardly participate in the forum. I already elaborated on the privacy in my last post but being in command is akin to being an officer in the army. They're not special. You pay courtesy and respect to them but what are they? Administrators and managers. Nothing special. Normal people. But they discuss things among other officers that are kept confidential from enlisted. And that's fine. If everyone sees and has the right to comment, in or out of the subforum, you might as well just take it away. Which is something I can get behind because honestly if that happens, all you're doing is fragmenting discussion and causing unnecessary clutter. People will go back and forth between the forums or just migrate the discussion entirely to another subforum. Why deal with that? Just take away the head of staff forum.
-
I personally don't believe non-whitelisted players should have view access. I don't really participate in the forum so I imagine my word doesn't have much weight on it but the privacy matters. People who are non white listed and want to participate but cant I imagine might develop animosity for those they disagree with but can't really voice. One of the few reasons the concept of "need-to-know" exists. It also reinforces the idea of rank-restricted access. Like the attention to heads thread where command staff are informed of the going-ons of certain characters and their employment status. That's pretty nice.
