[Dismissed] Antag whitelist for special antags
Scheveningen replied to BurgerBB's topic in Rejected Policy
That's the more ideal solution imo. Although at first glance from a new player perspective (hypothetically) it might be silly. PLAY 24 HOURS OF THIS SERVER TO UNLOCK NINJA. ACQUIRE FIRST GREENTEXT OF THE DAY BONUS AND COLLECT IMMEDIATELY. -
Gather around, everyone. Let's all hear about what I did when I was a noob. My very first day playing SS13 was very fun. Do note that I did all of this in a day. First ever round when I joined SS13, from what I recall, was on Apollo. Spawned in as an assistant, no idea what I'm doing. I hadn't even escaped arrivals yet. Another assistant walks up to me and starts pulling me along. I ask where I am and where I should be going, they reply, "Follow me, I will show you around" and takes me into maintenance. Dude was a changeling. I get eaten and I don't even realize it until I'm dead. Darn. I hop off for a bit and read the wiki and wait for the next round. I join in as an assistant again, I figure out how to use the radio, pull things, so on... Then I decided to explore a little! I discovered what happens when you open an airlock into space. I never stood a chance. Week 2 after I decide Apollo isn't for me (this was mid 2014 apparently), and the other servers don't do it for me, especially not as much Goon since I was absolutely bad at playing on Gooncode. So I join into Aurora on the account that predated OneOneThreeEight. So I join in as a drone to explore the map and actually figure out what I'm doing. This is only week 2 so I'm not even close to knowing much about the game. For the very first time I interact with an air alarm. I hit the button to 'siphon' not exactly sure what it meant but, for me, I was just a newbie with a lack of imagination or inference for context clues. I was not very impressionable when I was 16-17. Enter SoundScopes into my internet life. God bless that man for bwoinking my stupid ass, as I siphoned the air alarm to the bar. I deny these heinous accusations absolutely true assertions that I siphoned the bar. I was honestly scared about getting banned and didn't tell the truth. Very silly of me to do, since he apparently had logs that I synthetically fondled the circuits of an air alarm. He didn't tell me this, of course, but he did teleport me from the scene of the crime that I escaped which totally shocked me. I was quickly spooked and I logged off immediately, having been caught in the act. This was my first ever encounter with an administrator. Probably not the best encounter you can have but it was a decent enough start for me to understand that rules were actually important to follow. And also not to lie. Lying is dumb because not only can you be caught doing it but it doesn't set good precedent for anyone you play with. It's stupid. I don't really remember too much else but after that ban that I sat on, I made a new account, blew off Apollo/Hypatia and then just played Aurora a lot. I have too many stories from then and now to really put into a singular post. Still plenty of fun though.

Remove maintenance technicians + electricians
Scheveningen replied to Scheveningen's topic in Archive
The solars aren't enough to power the station not because the power net is lazily mapped out (although there's an argument to be made that the map was made inefficient on purpose which has 'good' and bad things to it) but because even if they were mapped out perfectly, the station's devices have such a huge demand on the power grid that neither generators, solars or non-engine related means will actually outweigh the wattage demand that the station takes up. The station's absolutely massive and there's so many rooms and devices that the related areas add up to a significant amount of power draw for. This is why the power fails in under an hour if the engine isn't set up. This is also why I've been so expressive as to say that engineering would be better off at least without the maintenance technician role. Because engineers basically serve as this when they have nothing else to do. Electricians can stay, I guess, but they should start being encouraged to beeline to the tesla and solars as their first initial duties. -
[Dismissed] Antag whitelist for special antags
Scheveningen replied to BurgerBB's topic in Rejected Policy
Not a fan of whitelisting antagonists. Blacklist stopgaps supposedly already exist to prevent pubbies from being able to play certain team-based antagonist types until the timer runs out after they first log into the server from one set date in which the blacklist ends. -
this thread now looks incredibly hilarious without context

Then they should be encouraged to actually learn. If they don't want anywhere near the engine they shouldn't be playing engineering. It's in the name, even. -
Remove maintenance technicians + electricians
Scheveningen replied to Scheveningen's topic in Archive
Agreed. I hate being that head of staff that has to deliberate in regards to making that call, since I'm potentially ruining chances for an antagonist to get anything done in a round, but it's the only IC response that makes sense. -
holy smokes these are great
-
Engineering has OOC necessity to exist in the round such as security and medical do. The round does not progress if an engineer is able to do one job at the very start of the round and that's set up the engine. Maintenance technicians and electricians are among one of the multiple facets of the game progression in which certain players use as a stopgap excuse for not doing what's generally expected of a station engineer. They forego their primary reason for existing on station (to maintain the engine and fix breaches) to have a special title and otherwise not do anything particularly useful in it. The alternative titles do not actually bring more to the table than what they inevitably tradeoff for engineering characters: the ability to set up the engine. Station engineers need to be able to, bare minimum, set up the supermatter engine without delaminating it. They can specialize in practically anything else and have weaknesses in other areas, but their core purpose needs to be centered around setting up what is required for the round to progress in a semi-stable fashion given the current map's overreliance on power. The engine is too critical to the round in its current iteration for these alternative roles to even exist in their current fashion.

[Accepted] Sleepy's Unathi Lore Dev App
Scheveningen replied to SleepyWolf's topic in Developer Applications Archives
The tongue-in-cheek implication that your ideas are poop. Hilarious, not kidding there. Sleeper Werf's a wonderful fellow to have in this community and he's generally not a confrontational individual nor does he create issues by himself. He's got a creative cutting edge to him and I'd wholeheartedly recommend him be the Unathi lore deputy as he's got swell amounts of spirit and talent for writing fun characters. -
[Implemented] Give IAA's Injunction Authority
Scheveningen replied to Azande's topic in Accepted/Implemented Policy
My HOS files out injunctions for radio abuse like candy, whenever I can manage the slot. I've had plenty of people arrested over it and I usually try to tell command staff when I file injunctions out to their own staff. I think IAAs should be able to do a bit of the same, though admittedly its harder to enforce for them since they're just a babby IAA compared to a BIG DAD/MOM HoS. -
New Station Directive: 'Regarding Freedom of the Press '
Scheveningen replied to Azande's topic in Completed Projects
It does suck, yes. I will note that the newscasters designed to D-list are quite uncommon in security though. I believe the warden may have one and the HOS may also have one. I don't think there's one anywhere else because it would be a travesty if security officers could censor by themselves. If they can't, it means the HOS/warden/captain are solely responsible. -
New Station Directive: 'Regarding Freedom of the Press '
Scheveningen replied to Azande's topic in Completed Projects
I forgot this was a thing. I'm honestly rubbing my hands and going "NEHEHEHE" having been reminded that I can do this to combat someone who really likes using the newscaster as a pedestal to launch their slander upon. Anyway, what I described isn't necessarily a good thing and I wouldn't mind journalists getting some leeway or at least there to be guidelines regarding how to escalate rather than hitting a channel with a D-notice. -
[Processed]The United Empire of Moroz
Scheveningen replied to Scheveningen's topic in Lore Canonization Applications Archive
The latter, really. I want to provide a more progressive approach now that I've read it and moreover my discussions with Zundy and Pegasus. My response in proposition is less to destroy them entirely but manifest them in a way that makes them become its own polarized faction that contributes to divide the Dominian populace on a singular issue: The sovereignty of man over God, or the sovereignty of God over man. This isn't to say that you can't be religious anymore and instead of implementing the banishment, I'd like if there were more political conflicts between the Church and State. Industrialist-Materialistic Zeal vs. Religious-Traditionalist Zeal. Both factions would still be united to #HateSynths since it's one of the most uniting issues given how ironically barbaric they see the action of a synthetic being built to imitate life. Everything else would make Dominia a more polarizing concept where you fall into one of two groups: the grimdark industrialists that subscribe to the silent belief of the Emperor that all exist to contribute to a singular empirical whim in producing an efficient, long-term stable society (with the Tribunal's help, if necessary, and if not then they are a threat), or that of the Tribunal, which posits that the only unity the Dominian people can find is in God above all else. -

This. The Holy Tribunal doesn't fit in universe at all and it has the least amount of motivation to even exist, if there's any motivation at all besides someone deciding the lore really really really really needed a WH40K reference. Reason #1 why I think the Tribunal is so utterly irredeemable in its current iteration: You board as a die-hard Dominia supporter to tell Edict Breakers to kindly go back home and kill themselves. That's exactly what they're written to do. It's so utterly tasteless.

also I know I said "retcon" but my gameplan is for a failed revolution to happen and have all these changes occur progressively so that it doesn't disrupt existing character concepts too much, as I know people love that and I don't want to completely erase their accomplishments. They just have to pick sides, but it'd be arguably much more interesting seeing ex-Dominians of all shades and colors for various reasons. It'd be funny to see an Ex-tribunal and an Edict Breaker in the same room looking at one another and seeing how pointless it all was for the both of them. There'd arguably be MUCH more justification for them to come in droves to Tau Ceti being still loyal to the religious governance that Dominia once was. Their main language is also TCB too, so basically they're gonna find it easier to integrate in terms of a communication standpoint. -
[Withdrawn] Burger's Developer Application
Scheveningen replied to BurgerBB's topic in Developer Applications Archives
No it is not. There's a very defined difference between content consumers - who typically do nothing to actually contribute or improve to something they often spend more time whining about than it's worth, or content creators, who will actually put up with those people to pursue a hobby - one that anyone can learn with a little effort. Even the shittiest content creator is leagues better than a consumer, as they actually *do something*. You know the people playing the game are enjoying a hobby too, right, and you changing the hobby they're trying to enjoy is actually important to them, yeah? Kind of a massive distinction to make in case you forgot that while people can be abrasive in suggestions here, odds are they play the game more than the contributors do. Maybe consider how much say they have, instead of antagonizing them and calling them inferior? Literally shitty defense of this bull. This is some retarded us vs. them mentality you got going here. Fuck right off with that shit if you're going to bring that divisive elitist trash to this server. -

Putting content creators onto a pedestal higher than that of those who only play the game is kinda arrogant and elitist, don't you think? Never thought I'd see this day come, honestly. -
[Withdrawn] Burger's Developer Application
Scheveningen replied to BurgerBB's topic in Developer Applications Archives
That's kind of the issue here. This isn't about Burger going, "ah, shit opinion anyway" to someone who only goes "-1, this sucks and so do you", because this is actually his response to most forms of criticism that are generally more strung out in length and the critic's own personal reasoning. To the point where he'll say this to apply to the broader scope in general. . This is how much he cares about your opinion. I've no qualms with this individual contributing to be part of a state of affairs in a team structure as staff, but he should stay very far away from actual decision-making related to the staff position. He's proven countless times to get easily frustrated at feature feedback especially if it's negative. He admits it, even going so far that it "gives him depression" when he reads the negative feedback. Assuming he's not exaggerating (though I'm not sure about that, I'm sure he was plenty serious about calling me a downie and still hasn't apologized for it), he takes offense easily and gets aggressive on the forums when replying to negative feedback to the point of being tactless and disrespectful. -

Veering off the rails just to discuss the similarities of the various religions in-game is absolutely bollocks and it's not what I'm here to discuss. Stop derailing. I don't know how else to explain to you that Dominia in its current iteration is absolutely unreasonable and barbaric. Dominia as it stands is absolutely not sustainable in the current age. The original concept from the player who wrote it effectively had their writing co-opted and stolen by the lore team, it was rebranded through everything he wrote about it and then left the name "Dominia." It's easily perceived at this point that the lore team's plagiarized a concept from a player and then completely turned it on its head while keeping the name and some of the more ridiculous elements in the original design. It still leaves the shadow of ridiculousness that it originally was in its current barbaric iteration. This is absolutely not the standard the lore staff should be setting, to take concepts not theirs to begin with and edit everything without their permission. This is absolutely unethical and the end result in terms of merit only bears a very bitter taste in how Dominia is presented. If Dominia does not change it will continue to be treated as unseriously as it is. This is not an issue that administrators can immediately ban away from the servers, this is an issue inherent to a failure in writing and being able to think ahead as to how the readerbase is going to treat an impending concept. Dominia has an incredible amount of potential as an antagonistic faction but I find it ridiculous that you want to keep the absurdity of the faction how it is. As it stands it's not being taken seriously and it draws its own font of players who act ridiculous because of how absolutely ridiculous the core concept is. Was the Dominians screaming about God completely unexpected? Did that shock you when you heard about it? It's completely groanworthy. When I see a character in a marziite garb, I expect them to be intimidating and depending on the character I'm playing I might reply with a defensive or a spooked response. When I see a character in the dominian finery or see a clearly romanized name, I instantly expect them to be over-the-top acting like a religious zealot screaming at the top of their lungs about God, Edict Breakers and so on. Because that's supposed to the majority representation of what to expect from Dominian culture. Dominian outcasts, criminals or vocal minority moderates are not wholly representative of a good deal of what the written nature of the Dominian lore page is supposed to tell you about the average Dominian citizen and their lifestyle. This is a similar situation to the station being overpopulated with Guwans not too long ago, which caused an issue because they had numbers that were greatly over-represented. If this is supposed to mean that you can only play a Dominian that isn't a complete fanatic to their nation and cause, then I don't see the point of Dominia being so over-the-top at all if you can't act within the lore expectations to begin with. Because NanoTrasen doesn't make a point out of hiring extremists or crazies onboard their station, apparently, which is also reflected in the rules of having to roleplay a sane character. I've provided solutions to allow for a discussion regarding the "sanity check." You've chosen to ignore them and not give credit to any points brought up here. You only came into this thread just to say "no" and "no you're wrong" with only vague explanations as to why. You're arguing in bad faith and I'd also argue you're being super selfish and not considering anything other than your own viewpoint. -

I checked back to this thread because I wanted to say something that was still a bit relevant but Coalf kind of hits it on the head here. I'm not sure whether Burger does care for feedback or not but, well, yeah. It's kind of the impression I see here. He has said before that he'd rather see "+1 i like this" rather than a few paragraphs of a negative response.
