Player Complaint - Talc & ODIN
Scheveningen replied to Snakebittenn's topic in Complaints Boards Archive
I think it's genuinely telling of people's character that they get offended from IPCs goofing off for one round and yet they'll outright refuse to report recurring server/community-related issues and put off those types of complaints until the very last second when someone finally decides to be brave enough to report a real issue. This was a malf round and apparently accounts of who goofed off when and how are muddled enough to the point where people have gotten the facts wrong about this round. I joined briefly and cryoed briefly as the HOS, particularly as soon as I saw a security cyborg with a laser carbine sticking out of its first hardpoint 40 minutes into the round and which I decided, "Maybe I shouldn't play this round." I spent the rest of the round observing and found other things more noticeable than Talc/Odin goofing off, especially since they were evidently subverted by a hacked APC between the 20 minute mark in the round towards the end of the round. So meaning there's <20 minutes of unaccounted for silliness not related to malf AI shenanigans. That's hardly a round ruiner. -
You wish I would let you off that easy. If I make three paragraphs that are on-topic and three sentences that aren't, the net effect is probably fine - we can handle talking about multiple things at the same time. And I wouldn't bring it up if it weren't relevant. Since that Discord exchange happened within the hour following your response to my post... ... I'm pretty sure we can just skip the part of this conversation where you pretend it has nothing to do with your raging hard-on for me. Anyway. @Jackboot The "this is just a game" justification isn't observed for any other roleplay concerns on Aurora, so why does it suddenly apply here? I mean, if we want to make an arbitrary exception, I don't see why we shouldn't, I just think there's a need to acknowledge that it is an exception. Because the reasoning being "we need things to go like this because it's a game" can be really problematic if it's applied to other situations, like general antag motivations. And although there is surely SOME precedent in history for ideological violence erupting like that, it doesn't explain how it emerges from the context of this ostensibly docile research setting. You're not wrong, as evidenced by the fact that Revolution generally works as a gamemode, but you can see how the justifications are stretched thin. My point is, like Reyn says, Gang mode stretches the RP even thinner. If Revolution is a problem, then trying to solve it with Gang is a move in the wrong direction. . You conveniently forgot this part, pal. Also cute that you brought this discussion from discord to the forums in some half-assed attempt to embarrass the both of us because you just can't let a conversation go. Again, derailing the conversation.

[1 Dismissal] Mining Mimics Maul Mere Mortals
Scheveningen replied to LordBalkara's topic in Archive
Mimics only make an appearance in the cargo warehouse because of an issue where a former mapper accidentally (maybe) used the wrong crate path to add a crate into the security firing range. This is of historical notability because of how many people were mauled due to this slight 'accident' in mapping and the dev team thought it too hilarious to remove entirely, so mimics have a little under a small chance of occasionally spawning as a hostile mob in the cargo warehouse. It's not ideal to further increase the chance of people being mauled by a hostile crate, though, it's supposed to be one of those, "One in a thousand rounds" type things, because this is SS13 and things are allowed to be goofy once in awhile to pay homage to the original style, while keeping it rare enough from happening since we're also a HRP server. The intent is to not be too unserious and also not to be too serious. The balance isn't perfect but it's enough for some people to be satisfied (not really). We don't really need more mimics. -
You're derailing the thread, dude. Stay on topic.

[1 Dismissal] Remove Healing Effects from Tea
Scheveningen replied to Ornias's topic in Completed Projects
Okay, damn. You made like two huge posts going on about ahelpworthy things right after a post said these are situations worth ahelping over. It is not the fucking tea that is the problem. It is players being stupid. The only fix for terminal OOC stupidity is a server ban and that's all that can be prescribed. Tea is hardly impactful enough in the game to be a problem. -
Not a fact, actually, seeing as how antagonists doing things is treated laissez-faire by the server staff unless they do something below and beyond the most mediocre expectations of antagonists. In which it's dealt with by a case-by-case basis if it actually violates any rule or precedent. Said 'restrictions' are hardly restrictive enough to be considered a problem. Having immediate justification for your actions is all the rules ask for. No, it does. Did you know that the Columbine shooting took place hardly up to 2 hours? The shooting began at 11:19am and ended shortly after 12 when the two shooters killed themselves in the school library. It's not unreasonable to suggest violence can escalate in such a period of time. Uh, no. Everything you do in-game with supplementary justification is in-character. If you're worried about breaking character, that is actually your fault, not the fault of the game mode. You know, it's really not that unfathomable that a criminal network would attempt to seize the station, project territorial boundaries and intimidate people into their gang or press folks into their ranks to get shit done? Gang does this to a more interested degree that revolution does with all of the power dynamics involved. It's super easy to oversimplify a game mode concept you don't like. We don't need to get rid of revolution. While it is generally ineffectual since it requires really verbose players who can intelligently convince people to join their cause (totally unlikely to get at least 1 who wants to take point for every rev round ever), there's not really room to delete an entire game mode from existence. Maybe one day you'll get a good round out of it or something, being persistent in attempting to enjoy the round might get you a good round out of the mode some day. As for Gang, eh. While I like the game mode, I only enjoy playing it if I'm on /tg/ where the standards for roleplaying and conflict are much lower. It wouldn't really be worth trying something with the expectation that porting a game mode to a completely different server culture dynamic wouldn't cause any consistency issues. Neutral-negative, really, not willing to support this.

Let's not do something too extreme. Let's just nudge how much ERT can be utilized. You have to be dead for the typical 20 minutes in the round in order to spawn in as ERT when it's called. You shouldn't be able to get an immediate reward for dying in the round to be able to get back at whatever killed you. This enables antagonists to be further and away from whoever they victimized in a reasonable amount of time, and also limits conditionally who can mess around as highly geared NT-contracted mercenaries.

Arrow768 Wasn't it you that wanted to make brand malfunctions turn sentient and extremely dangerous? I thought that was a cool idea. Regardless, I still find this to be an interesting event because it's annoying. It's such a mild inconvenience that it just snowballs the chaotic element in the round further if it isn't fixed immediately.

I do not support the removal of extended from secret. If you're voting secret explicitly expecting antagonists, you're doing it wrong. I don't like malf. I'd ask malf to be removed from secret because I think it's a bad game mode where only three routes are ever done because most "antag mains" are amazingly uncreative and default to peaceantag gimmicks because they A.) think they can't get valided for it and B.) are not mechanically skilled enough to do anything different. But no, this would harm the legitimate malf players who enjoy getting nitty gritty and violent with people. Just because you don't like extended doesn't mean you should dictate what everyone else should be able to play. It is very infrequent people vote extended on purpose, it is always a tossup between extended and secret, with overwhelming voting for secret. Being able to vote for a random game mode is a concession everyone can make and would rather make over voting a singular game mode in.

Curtail ERT Authority [Implemented]
Scheveningen replied to Kaed's topic in Accepted/Implemented Policy
This is the current status quo and what they are supposed to be doing. ERT that are arbitrarily relieving the captain of command... rather than acting as a functionary that in the context of the emergency ranks above the captain... are exceeding their official powers and acting completely idiotic. I don't need multiple paragraphs to quantify how stupid it is for ERT to do this, but not much needs to change aside from the playerbase being encouraged to report beyond-borderline IC things and the administration being encouraged to slam the hammer down more for bad roleplaying. Yeah, those players are idiots and I'd support an ERT ban on whoever was playing those folks. Open up a complaint on whoever it was and I'd happily support whatever punitive action they get for it. I mostly just don't understand how ERT don't need a whitelist and get operational authority above command staff, honestly, there's a power dynamic issue here. -
[Accepted]Movie for the modern man.
Scheveningen replied to Coalf's topic in Lore Canonization Applications Archive
The only real significant distinction to be made is that this is an alternate timeline and things have radically changed after 1969. So while Bond movies probably didn't turn out too differently, Star Wars wouldn't have happened. -
Minor nerf suggestion to two-handed weapon types
Scheveningen replied to Scheveningen's topic in Archive
It doesn't seem to matter too much given their 2-tile range, though. Using harder materials will compensate. -

Scheveningen replied to Coalf's topic in Lore Canonization Applications Archive
But then it would be the 25th century. -
[Accepted]Movie for the modern man.
Scheveningen replied to Coalf's topic in Lore Canonization Applications Archive
It's the 26th century, not 24th. These are all classic movie ideas. -
Small issue with pikes as of current: They attack just as quick as traditional melee weapons with the benefit of serious 2-tile reach. This is super nasty and it would be best to attach attack delays to all of the heavier two-handed weapons so that they aren't completely busted.

A general warning regarding the NT-ISD Aurora-affiliate discord.
Scheveningen replied to Scheveningen's topic in General
Nothing I have said was untrue or inaccurate and any inaccuracies I made was clarified in the original edit of the OP. This is the problem. . But apparently he left at this point. -
A general warning regarding the NT-ISD Aurora-affiliate discord.
Scheveningen replied to Scheveningen's topic in General
Still failed to explain how you weren't able to plan in advance some sort of proper discussion with the three of them on deciding how to move forward if you were somehow still capable of concocting a plan that involved removing two out of three of them as soon as you came back. And also how you kept it from the other three staff members what you intended to do with them until the very last second when you had the power to remove them. That's kinda dishonest. But it was cute. No, actually, I would've totally been onboard with your plans had you not basically fired two of your staff for no fucking reason, which then led to your third man deciding 'well fuck this shit sucks I'm out'. I liked when the people running the discord server ran a reasonable tight ship and were upfront about it rather than having one person running the show also stab multiple of their fellow staff members right in the back for keeping their own ship afloat for absolutely no reason that could be beneficial to you whatsoever. I do not see how losing 2 staff members and hoping to keep only Doc onboard would've been of any remote benefit to you. You don't remove people who have done nothing wrong. It is unethical and uncalled for. You have a complete lack of a moral compass and this just shocks me. -
A general warning regarding the NT-ISD Aurora-affiliate discord.
Scheveningen replied to Scheveningen's topic in General
So basically while you were completely out of touch and on hiatus for several months you give thanks to both Amory and Icuris for their contributions to the discord server by removing them, because of your own selfishness and desire to push your agenda with the discord server. You proved just how disposable you saw those staff members were by removing them without a prior discussion on your goals with them. Your grand set of plans did not include Amory or Icuris, and so you removed them so that you would not need to make concessions for keeping them around. This is selfishness and narrow-mindedness. You outright did not consider attempting to have individual discussions with them before making a decision, your mind was already set. Allow me to simplify; "If I didn't deceive them and withhold the truth that I was going to remove them anyway, I would never have been reinstated as the owner of the discord channel. This might've been okay anyway but I chose the seemingly easier route for me so I could have direct control to do whatever I wanted and continue where I started. I started this server and thus I am owed the responsibility as the original owner to return and do whatever the fuck I please regardless of what the people I instated did to keep my server alive for the longest time." Those three individuals kept that server on life support for you only for you to turn around and give them the backhand as you returned. This is disgusting. You were voted back in, the only right you have to the server is the one that Doc, Amory and Icuris gave you directly. Even Doc will attest to this. You were voted back in and then you ousted 2/3 of the people who volunteered to keep your server alive, active and civil. The third saw how full of shit you were and left. This is the very definition of a hostile takeover, AKA, a coup. You had no intention of keeping anyone other than Doc. This is selfishness, again. This is you attempting to force an outcome you want rather than an outcome that would benefit more than just you. This powerplay didn't benefit anybody but you. You would have kept all three of your fellow staff members if your judgement wasn't so unsound that even Hellen Keller is raising an eyebrow at your fumbling. You are the very last person who should be running that discord based on what you did. You have no shame or consideration for what you did, and a value of security is to be self-reflective and avoid abusing your power for selfish reasons. Your duty is to others, not yourself. Never yourself over others. This is a nothingburger. This is lore speculation and is not justification for having removed two discord staff members for legitimately no good reason aside from them being in the way of your plans that would've otherwise have gone accordingly if you had just fucking kept them all on-board the team and with your ideas. You never fire someone from staff without good reason. I was damnably close but I left the mod team before that decision was ever made, because I was sure in a position where there was good reason to pinkslip me. It's pretty clear: He plans on turning security into militarized cops by merging the FSF and ISD into a single entity. That is all you need to know. And somehow this ties into his Developer's Genius Vision of removing loyal people that just got in the way of his dream. This is perhaps the part that makes me the most furious above all. They apologize because it's bad PR on their plate, not because they have a sudden epiphany on what they did wrong and what ways they will change from now on. It is one thing to make mistakes in the heat of the moment or bad judgements in the heat of the moment. This was planned far in advance by mcspizzy to have those two individuals who worked very hard to keep his server alive and still ripe with participants who chat and discuss things, just removed without any consideration or discussion of their contributions. This is a mark of a manipulator and you would do really good for yourself and your friends if you expressed yourself by boycotting that server and petitioning the administration to have that server removed as an Aurora-affiliate. This kind of behavior is not something the Aurora staff would condone themselves and they would do well if they removed NT-ISD from the Aurora affiliates listing in our main discord. This kind of decision making is not something any one person should ever endorse. -
General preface: This is non-Aurora discord drama. This has nothing to do with the regular server or the official Aurora discord server. At a point prior to the community member McSpizzy departing from the NT-ISD discord to sort out things IRL, they were the kickstarter of the discord server and the head admin at the time. Icuris, AmoryBlaine and Doc was McSpizzy's temporary successors and otherwise trusted individuals to handle things indefinitely. Mcspizzy recently returned and asked to be reinstated. The aforementioned successors held a vote and unanimously agreed to let Mcspizzy back on to run the server again. As a measure of thanking all three of them for their service to the discord server, Mcspizzy effectively removed all three of them from the discord with zero explanation or prior warning, and as of this post and 2-3 hrs ago has still not provided anything close to an adequate explanation as to why. As of this post, Mcspizzy is the only individual with any degree of power to the discord that remains. Despite having the time to remove several staff members and briefly speak only to Doc on the matter(who testified to say they barely got much of an explanation either), Mcspizzy apparently did not have time to make concessions or give explanations as to what was happening, for what reason, what was being planned and for what purpose, etc. It comes as a surprise to me that this even happened in the first place. I cannot fathom as to how such an extreme course of action felt like a good idea to Mcspizzy at the time. This is extremely unfortunate seeing as how, as of this post, no one knows why these drastic changes occurred or as to why the individual Mcspizzy chose to immediately remove three ISD discord staff members without explanation. I see this as a gross abuse of trust on the end of Mcspizzy and a complete lack of grace and dignity on their part. I have not personally witnessed a more undignified, inexcusable abuse of power and trust of other participants in a community in a very long time. Because of the removal of 3 out of 4 ISD leadership and the apparent lack of communication at all on the end of the current-ISD-owner, I am disavowing the ISD discord and the direction it seems to be taking for the worst. I would ask (read: not demanding) the Aurora administration revoke their affiliated group support for NT-ISD and remove the link for the aforementioned discord server. Mcspizzy betrayed the trust of several loyal community members (and a fucking server mod who volunteered to help out, even!) who stuck to it and kept the server alive and civil, only for him to repay those individuals by completely removing them from the equation without so much as a explanation as to why. If a person is willing to do this once and not even give a simple explanation as to why, they'll do it again. If you have any interest in a discord server that wishes to establish closer comms and tighter knit discussion between individuals that play security avidly, stay far away from the NT-ISD discord. The NT-ISD server host has not chosen to stand for the values of more than themselves and has selfishly taken a direction of the server without any consideration of pre-existing discord staff members. I'm really sorry I had to make this post but this is supposed to serve as a warning so that nobody else gets unreasonably fucked over for nothing as a few other community members did for their efforts. At this point, don't bother waiting for mcspizzy's excuses. He has nothing to say that will make up for this totally unfair display of power abuse to individuals who did not even deserve it. Expect him to damage control. DocAmoryBlaineIcuris Thanks for your contribution to the NT-ISD discord for as long as it lasted. Edit: I have seen the explanation currently as was confided to me. I am not going into detail with it (unless either would like to explain for themselves) but the fact remains that mcspizzy still removed three individuals that kept the server alive for the longest time, and removed two of them without warning, and only gave a speech to Doc who had to pass it on after icuris and amory were already removed. Doc chose to leave shortly after, Doc wasn't explicitly removed. The excuse that was given by Mcspizzy does not improve the situation whatsoever, it is still pathetic and a damning statement of the character of the person that caused this amazingly stupid and unnecessary radical coup to occur. And to think this all happened because of a vote with good intentions.

[Denied] SatinPristOTD Mod Application
Scheveningen replied to SatinsPristOTD's topic in Moderator Applications Archives
A week or so may be a little too soon, it's jumping the gun a bit in applying, even if you have HRP experience.
