Edit One: Name changed. Pipish -> Kizikh BYOND Key: Doxxmedearly Character Names: Wynter Steele, Librarian HARPI, pAI Rafia Lakhani, Engineering Apprentice Species you are applying to play: Unathi What color do you plan on making your first alien character (Dionaea & IPCs exempt): Sand Have you read our lore section's page on this species?: Several times over Please provide well articulated answers to the following questions in a paragraph format. One paragraph minimum per question Why do you wish to play this specific race: Unathi have always been the race that interested me the most. Initially, when I was brand new to SS13, it was an aesthetic attraction; I’ve always gravitated towards reptilian races. But it didn’t take long before my interest went beyond that; I love that the alien races aren’t just humans in different skins, Unathi especially. They’re individuals with distinct personalities and beliefs, but they come from a different culture with a different set of core values. Interacting with the Unathi crewmembers has always been an interesting and enjoyable experience, which had me diving into the lore after my first few shifts; there I fell in love with them. The clan system, the importance of honor, the technological gap, the religions, the ongoing news, the Guwan (NT’s exploitation of Guwan is such an excellent theme)… I find myself rereading the lore and watching for updates constantly. Beyond the lore, I enjoy how they interact with people, from the hissing accent to the different body language, to trying to understand things about humans and adjust to a multi-species crew. I’m pretty excited to create Unathi characters and explore their personalities and beliefs, especially with regards to how their race’s culture impacted their past and affects their present. There’s a lot to them to work with. Identify what makes role-playing this species different than role-playing a Human:Unathi culture is much different from human culture; this affects their every interaction, perception of their coworkers (and how their coworkers perceive them), and how they carry themselves aboard the Aurora. They place higher value on honor, which affects them both in and out of combat engagements. They are a spiritual people, as well, which is tied to their culture and views (Especially regarding cyborgs and prosthetics). There are also a number of subtle, but important differences, such as their body language and emotional displays, accent, aversion to cold temperatures, etc. Then, of course, there’s the tremendous gap in how men and women are seen and valued in Unathi culture, and how vastly different their opportunities are. They also come from a different technological era from humans and other species, which should be kept in mind when roleplaying and having conversations. The Aurora is a very different place from their home system. There's a lot that clash with their typically more conservative views. Character Name: Kizikh Guwan Please provide a short backstory for this character, approximately 2 paragraphs Kizikh was born during the Contact War, one of a clutch of two daughters under Clan Vikrin. Her father, Karakmor, was a scientist, who was working with his colleagues to research the effects of the war on the Moghes ecosystem, and attempt to curb its predicted devastation, often using his home as a place for meetings and discussion. Kizikh developed a curiosity because of this, and secretly listened in on their discussions. While she was a meek and shy girl, her curiosity slowly began to overcome this. Clan Vikrin expressly banned women from reading and writing, but after spending months working up the courage, Kizikh started sneaking books from her father’s extensive library, and began to teach herself. It became easier to do when the war ended, as her father spent more and more time away from home, doing work and experiments in the field that kept him away for days at a time. She knew that if she was caught, she would be in tremendous trouble. But she wanted to help her father and her planet; she was willing to take the risk and educate herself so that she might help one day, naively believing that she might be forgiven if she could help her father’s work. Her self-education was helped along by a nearby temple of the Akhanzi Order, located in the mountains not far from the community. Every meal or gift she received was split and saved to later offer to the shamans in exchange for literary education. They inspired her, kindling her curiosity and love for learning, and she slowly took on their beliefs. She was motivated to not only learn, but to teach; her free time was spent with a small group of girls from other clans, helping them learn to read and write. She eventually found herself falling romantically for one of them, a young woman named Iskri. Confused by this, she asked the Akhanzi for guidance, and learned about how love was the most important way to enhance the soul, and that while it may initially displease her ancestors, it could be overcome if the relationship was stable and loving one. It was not long after Kizikh came to terms with this that her father arranged for her to marry the son of a powerful, influential clan that he had long sought an alliance with. She felt nothing but sadness from this; she did not love him, nor did she think she ever could. How could she please her ancestors without love? At the same time, what of her duties, and her clan? After struggling with her conflicted feelings for several weeks, she summoned her courage and did what she felt she had to do. She ran. On the night before the marriage was set to be finalized, Kizikh gathered what books and supplies she could and ran. She thought she might find shelter with Iskri; she went to her and confessed her feelings, urging them to flee and have a life together. But Iskri did not return Kizikh’s feelings, and moreover thought they were strange, and that Kizikh was insulting her ancestors. Heartbroken, she continued to run, taking shelter with the Akhanzi. She stayed with them for three days; when her father learned she might be with them, he started arguing with them and making threats. While he might not have been able to force them to turn her over, Kizikh immediately gave herself up, rather than cause trouble for the order that had taught her so much. Iskri’s rejection forced Kizikh to think about her actions, and she believed she was dishonoring herself and her clan by fleeing. She would return, and do her duty. But the damage was done. Her father barely salvaged the alliance and Clan Vikrin’s honor, agreeing to two terms after days of negotiation and apology. The first was that Kizikh’s more “Well-behaved” sister would take her place in the marriage. The second was the exile of Kizikh, both from her clan and off-planet. This devastated her, but her pleas and promises to her father fell on deaf ears. The court accepted the petition, and Kizikh was henceforth marked “Guwan.” NanoTrasen approached her as she was being shuttled off-world, and offered her a work contract. She did not know how disadvantageous the terms were; she was grateful to them for the opportunity and for extending such a kind off to a Guwan. She managed to pass the Horticulture Aptitude Test; given that she educated herself using books about flora and ecosystems, and spent years tending her home’s extensive garden, she was determined to be an excellent fit for a role in maintaining and growing plants aboard the NSS Aurora in a service role. She was happy to take this opportunity, if also frightened of such a large change. While it seems like a far dream, she hopes that one day her work with plants can help keep Moghes habitable. What do you like about this character? There’s a lot I enjoy about Kizikh. Her motivations for learning weren’t due to an act of rebellion against her culture or family, but rather because she wanted to help her father, her people, and her planet. This was what she felt her duty was. Even though she is meek and shy, she still manages to summon the courage to take a few risks that are important to her and what she believes. And now, even after losing everything about her old life, she isn’t doom-and-gloom about it; her story is a hopeful one (with a rough start), where she has an opportunity to grow and make her way despite such huge setbacks. Now that she’s going to be exposed to cultures outside of Moghes, it will be interesting to see how she grows, what she learns, and how she comes to terms with who she is and where she fits in. She still has emotional ties to Moghes, and still wants to help the planet. She cares about being Guwan; she didn’t intend to ruin her family’s honor, and understands that she has none of her own. This bothers her, haunts her, and will affect how she interacts with others, especially Unathi (Which will be very stressful for her). Right now, there’s a part of her that hopes she can return to her family, or at least make some sort of amends for the trouble she caused. She wants to restore her honor, even if she, right now, doesn’t believe she’s worthy of it. She’s a shy young woman, full of questions, whose curiosity is constantly at odds with her anxiety, which is a combination I enjoy and that I feel makes for interesting RP. There’s a lot of culture shock for her to deal with here, which is a great setting for that combination. I want to see her grow and realize that the Aurora is a better fit for who she is than Moghes was, even if it’s a scary and difficult adjustment to make at first. How would you rate your role-playing ability? 8/10. I am a very experienced RPer (15+ years) but newish to SS13 controls and RP format. I’m getting the hang of it though. I’m a bit shaky for the first few shifts on a new personality/character, but I adapt quickly. Notes: Her background here is set before the 4/1/60 events in the Wasteland Window, and after the 8/29/59 edict that the court has to finalize Guwan declarations. I know seeing “Guwan” is probably a big red flag for characters, especially a first whitelist app. I hope this doesn’t come across as an attempt to subvert Unathi culture and get around the lore. Kizikh doesn’t have a sense of cultures outside her own. I want for her to learn about others IC, confront values different than the ones she was surrounded by on Moghes, and grow. I understand applying as a whitelist with a Guwan makes it more difficult, but I want to make sure I understand how to play one; if I earned an Unathi whitelist, I would play her most frequently, and want to make sure I do so correctly. It seems… disingenuous to try to circumvent a whitelist in this situation; I have a lot of respect for the work put into the lore, and I want to make sure I can do the Unathi justice in my RP. If I am rejected, I am rejected, and I will use that opportunity to grow, but I would like the chance to receive feedback and make changes before that happens. Thoughts on justifying her exile:
-
On the other hand, imagine that delicious despair. Yeah, that's the other issue. Even if they're not specifically intended to grief, I can see a lot of songs being played that are just obnoxious or too silly, or not fitting at all. Another great point. I know a few members do digital music. I wonder if they might be interested in cooking up some tunes for the jukebox? I know I would certainly give it a shot.
-
I disagree. It would be an unnecessary pain to deal with that, I think. It could get very messy very quickly. I do, however, agree with expanding the selection available, if that's even possible and not a tremendous hassle.
-
It's pretty fun; I love seeing not only the different sec, but the influx of ganger characters. I would say another week could be fun. I'm against making a permanent attachment, though. However, I don't play sec, so I'd like to hear how they feel about it, too.

The Aurora Reader: A Library and Literary Blog

NSS Aurora Poetry Jam: What’s Next? Thank you to everyone who participated in the Aurora Poetry Jam! It was a huge success thanks to you- we received an incredible 30 entries this month! Trust me when I say I know it isn’t easy to publish your work; baring your creativity, your thoughts, and your feelings for all to see is an act of courage. Most of you haven’t written before this humble call for poetry, but I hope that you will all continue to do so. And to the readers who did not participate, I hope this volume will inspire you to take a chance, to tap into a side of you that you may not know is there, and experience the joy of seeing a creative piece from beginning to end, and putting it out there for everyone to enjoy. So then, what’s next for the Aurora Poetry Jam? Firstly, I will be arranging and publishing the poems in a single volume to be stored permanently in our archives. The official title of this volume will be “Sound,” named after one of the entries. Not only will this be stocked on our shelves, but for the first few days (at least), I’ll be bringing extra copies around for each department to enjoy. A free copy will be made available for participants to take home, if they wish (Steele Publishing, based in Mendell City, has volunteered to cover the cost of printing as a thank-you for such a massive literary contribution). I’ve also received several questions about whether or not there would be a verbal reading of these poems; while not originally planned, the interest in this seems higher than I anticipated. Therefore, I will be holding readings across several days and several shifts (In order to give everyone a chance to participate); please keep an ear out for the announcement! These will either be held in the holodeck (if available), the bar, or the library. Participation is voluntary, of course. Step up and read your poem, or come by to hear them performed! And if you saw a poem that you particularly enjoyed (but did not write), you’re free to come up and read it, as well. Once again, thank you everyone for making the first NSS Aurora Poetry Jam a tremendous success! Keep an eye out this week for the details of our next literary event, “Letters from Home.” Posted by Wynter Steele 9:27am -
[Accepted] Zyymurgy's IPC Whitelist App (x2)
Doxxmedearly replied to zyymurgy's topic in Whitelist Applications Archives
Backstory is incredibly well-thought and believable. I really want to see Celes interact with the crew; I love upbeat synths. And coming with her owner to NT? Beautiful. It seems a bit odd that "the girl," her owner, remains nameless for most of the story? Is she Nisreen, referenced in the last paragraph? I like that she's one of your characters, too, but maybe it would be better to mention her name earlier in the background paragraph. I've only interacted with Akeelanii, but she is an excellent character, and I have faith in your roleplay abilities. And this app looks much better than your last one. +1 from me. -
[Accepted] Maereo's IPC Whitelist application
Doxxmedearly replied to Maereo's topic in Whitelist Applications Archives
What's up with this modesty? Zion is a delight to roleplay with, consistent, always in-character, and overall amazing. Maereo, there are plenty of people I would give a 5/10 to, or a 7/10 to, but you are not one. 9/10, easily. Especially after seeing you play a wildly different character from Zion (Milaya) and how quickly you adapted and played her well. I'm confident you could play any whitelist race well, including IPC. Maybe you're not confident because as you told me on discord, you're newish to RP and SS13, but I'd never have guessed that. The fact that you asked me for critique on your RP and for any tips shows me that you're also always looking to improve. As for the app/character itself... Love the concept. A frat IPC? That's amazing. I would like to see a little more (Maybe a sentence or two) about how exactly/why exactly K.E.G. came to be with NT and the Aurora. It's pretty vague as the app currently stands. I'd like the know what motivation or circumstances led to him being with us on this station. That said, huge +1 from me. I know you can do K.E.G. and any other IPC character justice. -
[Accepted] Worthy's IPC Application
Doxxmedearly replied to Worthy's topic in Whitelist Applications Archives
I really love Flair's backstory, and I'm going to echo Redoktober's interest in seeing how an IPC designed to be the protagonist of a spy movie translates to security work. I have no doubts that Flair would be a fun and interesting character to be around, especially played by Worthy. I also like the integration of the recent security shortage events. I can definitely believe NT bringing her onto the Aurora given their scrambling for sec personnel. I'm not sure if it's a stretch to have an IPC designed for movies/entertainment fill a security role, though, but I think that's up to the lore writers. I have no trouble believing it. +1. -
Aha! I forgot all about that one. Yeah, that can be added back in, then.
-
The fact that it's not too different is intentional; the current library design is functional, but messy; I'm aiming to tidy it up with small optimizations, not totally overhaul it. I'll admit that the fire alarm/newcaster placements on port were pretty arbitrarily placed by me. Those can always be rearranged to make sense. I also felt the same about carpeting the starboard side, but wasn't sure how to do it well. Noted about the labeler; that can easily be placed back. Though not sure how that fixes paperwork issues; you can rename papers and folders (IIRC) by just right clicking them when holding them. Maybe I'm not totally sure what you mean? I'll admit I don't see many people using the library for paperwork, so I'm unsure what barriers they may have. I'm also not totally sure what you mean about the requests console; that's already locked behind the librarian's desk in the current design. Can't most paperwork be printed from departmental request consoles? I didn't think it was library-specific.
-
Here is my take on library mapping. The deets: New shelf totals: -1 Nonfic and ref shelf, +1 adult shelf. Why did I downgrade 3-rows of most book cases to 2-rows? It makes for easier stocking; you can still fit as many books as you want, but it's quicker to make it look nice. Extra shelf (unlabeled) by the front for whatever you want for the day. Most libraries would use it for things like “New arrivals,” or “librarian’s choice,” etc. A journalist might want to display her interviews. The visitor computer is now more visible, might be used more. The island provides a nice central location for supplies. Some people only use the library to buy laptops, so I moved it to the front for easier access. Filing cabinet moved to library office. It was a little weird to have it as public access. Journalists should find this nice for storage. Lose one individual table/chair set in this design, but still aesthetically nice. Never seen all small tables filled. -2 chairs from long table. Should feel less crowded and more private for those looking for quiet time. Office is slightly bigger. Locker holds suit, bookbag, EFTPOS stuff. File cabinet holds folders. Generally makes the office neater. I removed the desk because frankly it seemed out of place. Swapped the position of the book upload scanner/librarian PC for aesthetics; it looks better when you’re printing a book for someone at the desk if you can turn in your chair to face the PC instead of the scanner. Generally tidied up. Removed the wrapping paper, added a deck of regular playing cards. Moved the charger towards the front for easier access. Conerns: Unsure how the shelves look, aesthetically. Trying to balance how it looks with how accessible they are. Being on the left makes it less of a walk to view the shelves, but I'm not sure if putting them against the wall makes it feel too crowded. As said in a previous post, I do not play journalist, so I am unsure how well this design works for them. Feedback would be appreciated. The roomy office should feel like a step up, I hope. I'm not 100% sold on how I arranged the items in the office. Maybe there's a better way? Unsure if subtracting some shelves makes the library feel even less important than many feel it is. Basically not 100% sold on the top half of the library and how it's arranged. Been wobbling back and forth on removing/adding tables, putting the lone shelf on the left versus the right, etc. Feedback would be appreciated.

Ah, no, the book scanner is, in the current map, the device that you place books into for archive upload. It's directly next to the librarian's computer. Without it, we can't add new books to the list. I wasn't sure if the one outside of the librarian area was the visitor computer (which can only check the archives, not print, to my knowledge), or the librarian computer. Thank you for clarifying that. I feel like I would prefer the printing of books to remain as librarian/journalist-access only, but maybe people don't feel the same. I know Coalf gets sad when he can't get books. I like having a visitor computer out there still so people can view the archives and say "Oh I want this." That's a good deal of librarian interaction; if they can print their own, though, it sort of takes that away.
-
Huh wow I thought everyone but me had forgot about this thread. I was working on my own map, as well, which I'll post sometime this week so we can compare notes regarding our ideas, since mine has a focus on the librarian instead of the journalist. (The small changes I posted when I made this thread have since become an entire redesign, like yours) My main question with this map is: where is the librarian computer and book scanner? Those are probably the two most important things for the librarian. The layout itself looks very nice. The spaciousness is good, and the shelf layout is pretty neat. I agree, too, that it would be cool to have a journalist slot + a librarian slot, with the journalist getting their own office area. I don't know how likely that would be, though, given how few people play either.

[2 Dismissals - Bin Sun/29/2018]]Remove the detective's revolver's lethals
Doxxmedearly replied to Worthy's topic in Archive
Personally, I would prefer to see them with their current gun + rubbers. The aesthetic of the revolver-toting detective is a good one, and one I would be sad to see go. But that's all it is; an aesthetic choice. (And Jackboot's idea on page 1 about an energy revolver is a pretty neat one). Mechanically, I have no argument against a laser pistol, and I would offer no complaints if this was the agreed-upon solution. As long as lethals are gone, really. I agree it's silly to have them on you on code green. -
O.R.B. is, without a doubt, one of my favorite characters to see and interact with. I love the borg, and Capesh is easily one of the best RPers on Aurora, from what I've seen. I could go on for a very long time about how great the character is, but that's getting off-topic. That sprite is beautiful. I love it. It fits the setting seamlessly and is unique without being obtuse. I would say that this is well-earned and would no doubt be put to good use. Major, MAJOR +1 from me. Edit, to go more in line with Tish's post Does it make sense to the character? Yes, absolutely. It fits ORB's personality and the background written makes sense to me. I have no complaints. Is it a reasonable thing to have on-station? No doubt. Does it fit the general style of things? Absolutely. It would not look out of place at all to see ORB with this chassis.

I'm in favor of replacing lethals with rubbers. I think it makes a good deal of sense and cements its role as a self-defense tool during standard operations. -

Hello everyone! There is less than a week until the end of the first Aurora Poetry Jam! You still have plenty of time to submit your poems. I’d like to offer a few reminders as we approach the deadline: Poems may be submitted via the NSS Aurora Uplink by sending it to: Doxxmedearly. If you don’t see me on shift, this is a great way to make sure you get to participate! You can publish your works anonymously, if that makes you comfortable. If you’re still feeling creative after submitting your first poem, remember that you can submit another! If language or writing is a barrier, please feel free to dictate your poem into a universal recorder! I will be available with a recorder if this is the method you would prefer. Don’t forget to title your work! This is a collaboration, not a contest: A majority of our submissions are from first-time poets, so you’re not alone! Don’t worry about skill; poetry is first and foremost about expression. Still uninspired? I will be stocking poetry, songs, and rhymes in the fiction, adult, and religion sections of the library. Great writers use references, so please take advantage of this! I am always here to help if you need! I’ll gladly come to your department if you’re too busy or understaffed to step away. And thank you everyone for your submissions so far! These poems are excellent and I’m glad you decided to share them with the crew. I hope you’ll continue to write! Look for the final publication at the beginning of next month, and keep an eye out for details on our next literary event, which will be posted some time next week! -Wynter Steele Posted by Wynter Steele 11:15AM -
[Accepted] Jupiter Storm's IPC Application
Doxxmedearly replied to Jupiter Storm's topic in Whitelist Applications Archives
I think 7/10 is lowballing your abilities. Gideon is a great character and Jupiter does a really good job with RP. While I won't pretend to know much about IPC backstories and what makes for a good whitelist, I can vouch for their solid roleplay, which I'd put at closer to 8 or 9/10. +1 for me based on that alone. I don't feel like I can provide any useful commentary on the character/backstory here, sorry to say. Good luck! -
I did notice that a lot of duplicates and troll books were already deleted by the time I saw this thread today. To which I have to say "thank you" to both you and whoever helped clean up the other books prior. This is going to make stocking the shelves MUCH less of a headache.

Writing In Game Books - Why Is This So Hard
Doxxmedearly replied to Gamerlord's question in Questions
I know this is a few weeks old, but I have a few questions about the same subject, and felt making a new thread was too spammy. -I don't see an option for a printer module in the laptop vendor. Am I missing something? -As well, when I asked R&D for a Nano-printer, they didn't seem to know what I was talking about. Does this exist or did the player perhaps just not know? -Do I need to publish a book first in-game and then edit it, or does the "Add new book" option work in the interface? -...Is there a process for deleting books in the external network? I have uploaded duplicate books, because they were the incorrect subject (Fic/Nonfic/etc). This was before I realized it could be edited. I see a few other authors have done this as well. The web interface is such a GREAT tool, thank you for pointing it out! -
