  1. Furrycactus, you're becoming a champion of great engineering upgrades. Personally I love this, as having more options for power is never a bad thing. Solars are way more newbie friendly and might lead to people picking engineer more often. I love the idea of it. And I love that it's not as efficient as the other two options. It's a good backup in case of a delam, too. From an antag perspective, this is a good way to mess up power temporarily, as it doesn't cause catastrophic damage like a delamination or freed Tesla. It's not a hard fix, but it takes time to get up there to do it, buying some time for whatever gimmick might depend on it. I wonder if there's a way to knock it down a little more, though. I'd like for there to be incentive to building your own solar array, or expanding on the existing ones. Maybe it can power the station, but only for an hour or so, which gives some leeway and breathing room towards setting it up to where it can power the station indefinitely. What are your thoughts on that? Is that even possible?
  2. Fresh, I don't think there's any doubt that you know I love your RP, and that we're more or less friends now. That friendship started and grew because of my respect for your ability to RP and your great OOC attitude. So, I owe it to you to be honest with my criticism on your app. As far as meeting OOC standards and the responsibilities of a whitelisted role, I have zero doubt that you'll do great. You've taken lots of criticism over the last few months, especially regarding Erin and her attitude issues. You hold two species whitelists and have done nothing but great with them, making good characters and sticking to lore. When you antag, you try to involve the crew and avoid murderboning. You're not afraid to try new roles and learn from veteran players. When you're sec, you don't validhunt. I play at least two rounds with you a night, and even when we're not characters who interact with each other, you do a great job adding to the round. You've had rough spots. We all have. Things we shouldn't have done in round or OOC. But this isn't a consistent pattern for you, and you fess up when you make mistakes. I've told you when you made mistakes, and you took it well. Despite what one screenshot says, I've never seen you have an issue separating IC and OOC. You definitely have my +1 as far as playing a head of staff, including the responsibility of holding this whitelist and being a good example to players both IC and OOC. But there are some valid points regarding using Erin as your HoP. I know you've RP'd talking to captains and command staff about being up there. That's good. You meet the age requirement, and 10 years experience in service counts. She, however, does not have a related degree, as pointed out. So unless you're willing to retcon your most established character's backstory (I wouldn't), she can't be one yet. And I know you love her; hell, most of the station does, IC and OOC. Seeing established characters being promoted is also always fun. But trying to put her as a HoP at this point seems very shoehorned. My honest advice is to make a fresh (haha) character for your app. I understand you're attached to her, but I can't support Erin becoming HOP. tl;dr: You still have my +1 for being a head of staff, but I think you need to drop the idea of it being Erin. It's not working out.
  3. I'm surprised it isn't a thing already. It's a great idea.
  4. A lot of small annoyances adds up. Punishing those who do seems reasonable.
  5. Working with Preston as Rowan or Xichi has been nothing short of a delight, and honestly, your ability to RP this character is admirable. He's consistent. He's got a defined personality. You don't meta his relationships with other characters based on non-canon rounds (IE: Still seeing Rowan as a good pal and great worker despite her antaggy actions in prior rounds). He feels very real. He reminds me of when I played Wynter: on the surface, people cry snowflake because of the way he looks, as if dyed hair is some sort of unrealistic thing. And the people that avoid him for that are missing out on a really good and fun character. I don't have any criticisms on him, but I'd be happy to point out where you can improve if I see a way for you to do so. For now, my advice is to just keep doing how you're doing. He's definitely a fave.
  6. Yep. People are gonna say you suck no matter what because a solid chunk of this community is made of a bunch of whiny manbabies who are still in their "I think it's cool/funny to be rude" stage of maturity. It's a huge problem. "Never be antag again" should not be more common than "bad rounds happen, you'll get better." And it's exactly why this happens. But, the inevitable aside... I've never played ninja, so I can only pull advice from being on the other side of one, hearing people talk, playing other antags, and general observation. -Exploitable info is an excellent tool. Read them, even if you don't want to center a gimmick around them. -Anything that leads to you being chased around in tunnels for half an hour or more is boring for everyone. This depends a good deal on sec not being validhunty, but still worth remembering if you plan to "go loud" very quick into the round. You'll probably get chased EVENTUALLY but after a while it gets old. -Basically what Coalf said. Blackmailing and intimidating crewmembers is a good tactic. It's not all about your sick ninja gear -Sec can and will kick your ass in many head-on confrontations. Unless you got the crew on your side, you gotta be careful; medbay isn't going to patch you up if you get shot and let you go free.
  7. Could we get cheap lighters added to the loadout? Right now only zippos exist.
  8. tbh I wish people would interact with the chef more rather than going to vendors. The chef is preparing freshly cooked food, with the freshest produce you can actually get, and usually happy to cook whatever you want to order, for free. Compared to shitty vendor food that costs a ton of creds. I'd like anyone reading this thread to keep that in perspective when RPing. Sometimes you're too busy, but, if you're not, yes, you should take some time to go get a free fresh-cooked meal. But. I agree with HouseofSynth's points. I also agree with and like the idea of vendors being only partially-stocked, since that doesn't really screw over the station without a chef on staff, and makes sense. The random recall event wouldn't be a bad thing to toss in, either. I see a lot of rounds with chef RP. There are some notable chefs who do a lot, and get a lot. And there ARE rounds where you get nothing. That sucks, and I know it sucks. But... I don't think all of the proposed solutions, as they are now, are a good way to go about this.
  9. +1 'cause Elliot's a great RPer, does will with his Skrell whitelist, and seems to have a grip on IPCs. I RP'd with him a lot when I was new, and now that I've been here for almost 5 months, I can say that he's really consistent and takes great care with his characters. Any questions I had were already addressed or are being addressed. Good luck!
  10. You've got the spirit, but the app is... not up to par, as already explained above. Toaster really hit all of it. My suggestions? -Reread the Dionaea wiki page. Like, really read it. -Look at past applications: they're in the whitelist archive! -Reach out to the lore team if things are confusing or you want to run ideas by them -Spend a bit more time playing on the server. I mean maybe another week or two, not a day. -Reapply when you're ready. Keep the lore wiki open for reference. Don't get discouraged! Stay DETERMINED. You just need to answer the questions more thoroughly and get some more experience with our lore. Unfortunately, I cannot support this app as it is. I like your drive, but we need to make sure our lore is represented properly in game through the characters.
  11. I've done this with a few of my characters already, such as Kizikh. It'll probably be along the lines of when someone has only a basic grasp on a language IRL: Not knowing words, and using descriptions ("Picture Floor" for holodeck, "cute human birds" for chickens, the character Aisha El-kabir using "Booms" for Kinetic Accelerators), incorrect sentence structure ("Can you explain her the rules?"), verb agreements ("She like the colors!"), strange word substitution ("How does he call..." instead of "How does he say...", "She has been fighting since four years" instead of "She has been fighting for four years"). It will be noticeable, and become more pronounced as she gets flustered and has less time to think. Slang will utterly confuse her. Aside from my own sentences, it'll be a matter of taking time to understand what other people say to her, communicating slowly, and sometimes just sort of pretending she understood what was said. Good question! That will have to come up in conversation. Like the NKA, she will keep a "stiff upper muzzle" about the conditions and hardships of living in what is basically a slum, and so won't complain about it. More like a "it is hard, but it is nothing she cannot endure." She shares a home with a refugee family, and if anything, it redoubles her efforts in working hard. Gangs... it's possible, though I am yet undecided on where that path will go. She has not been there for long, but that's a really good aspect to think about. Everyone's gotta have hobbies! She likes to keep up on fashion trends and enjoys modifying clothes and reading magazines. She got into board and card games during her services, and likes to play with the children she lives with. She's into winter sports, too, having played them with her construction buddies way back when. Thank you for your comments!
  12. Staff have said on the forums here that you're a person who has changed from being a shithead validhunter to a respectable player, and you recognize your past faults here. I didn't know the past you. But I can say that I think that the current you is a pretty good sort, with good characters, game knowledge, and the ability to roleplay. I can't recall any issues with your OOC conduct, and I have to say I love your answers for why you want the command app, and believe them to be genuine. Someone who can change as much as I've heard you did has definitely earned a fair shot at a command whitelist. I think you can do it justice, ICly and OOCly. I feel the character is a little lacking here, though. Nothing horrible or red-flaggy to me but I don't really have a huge sense for who they are. I'm not asking for any more than what's written, still, because I know you can pull them off as a well-rounded character. Definite +1 from me.
  13. I see. I understand then. Your concern is valid, though, because of course you don't want to see anyone going horribly against lore with a species you obviously really enjoy. If anyone reading this is a person who asked this, cut that out, seriously. Please don't be jumping to extremes like this. I understand his concern and respect Menown tremendously, and I don't think that that's at all what he was implying. He should not be harassed for expressing his concerns on a whitelist app.
  14. I'm saying it's a possibility, yes. That's development and learning. Rejecting the notion that you are disgusting and should not be how you are is like. A major, courageous, and careful step in coming to love yourself. It's not an easy one. It's not even a guarantee; perhaps it will always be a secret between her and her trusted friends, given that other Tajara on-station will treat her horribly if they knew, forever destined to be locked away in exploitable information. Maybe her fiery spirit will erupt and she will take this risks. Maybe everyone will write her off as a standoffish asshole and it won't even come up. Maybe she'll be shamed into taking her life. I don't know! That will be shaped by her experiences. The fact is that there are always people who will stand up for what they believe, even if it means the risk of death. I'm not saying she will be one, but it's not far-fetched to have it as a possibility. I'm not sure where this insinuation is coming from. I just described that my characters are ongoing in their struggles, with one exception. I'll say that no, obviously a week or two is such a ridiculously short time for something like this. I understand how serious this is. I get how big of a deal this is for Tajara. It's not something that will be ignored. Does my grasp of the lore seem weak in some places that I can work on further clarifying? Does it seem like I'm trying to shoehorn in sexuality rather than trying to work with it in the context provided by the lore? Should I have addressed sexuality in the backstory? I understand the concern, and I understand why it is directed at me. I am not sure I can ever really assure you that I take the lore very seriously, more than I already have (but I hope that I do, either with this response, or with my roleplay! You are a good Taj player, and I respect your thoughts). I'm sorry if I came off as being hostile or confrontational, it was not my intent. I'll watch my words.
  15. Saw this line of questioning coming, and so I will address it. I am aware of what is expected, as I was and am with Unathi. This topic was something I talked to mofo about while asking for some lore clarification questions. I understand some uneasy shifting going on, worrying that I might toe a line because gay is my default for characters just the same as straight is the default for many players. Being distinctly aware of the views of each race's society (and in this case, faction, as well) on the topic is something I know I have to understand completely before making characters that deviate from this expected norm. That is why it was a major point in my Unathi whitelist character; so I could make sure I was getting things right. I get the worry, especially because I like to joke about it and scream it OOCly. I'm sure people look at how I do characters and call it a meme, claim I'm being snowflakey, contributing to the "liberal hellhole" of Tau Ceti, or whatever other things are repeated in OOC a million times a day. But at the same time I think it's pretty unfounded that my IC behavior would be so blatantly against established lore, as I've had an Unathi whitelist for some time, and they have some similar ideas (though not as extreme as Tajara). -Kizikh, is not open about it and is in fact extremely hesitant to accept it as part of her. It is a slow process she is going through to accept it. -Sunny is not really on board with the idea she might be bi, and rarely touches the subject. -Xichi is now open about it (even if it took many, many rounds for her to be comfortable displaying it); it was easier for her because the Dominia wiki entry says it's chill Maybe people don't like the idea that gay xenos exist. I guess I have to say that's too bad, because they do, no matter what you or their society says. What matters is that I understand the lore well enough to know how they would display it. Which, for Tajara, is basically "they don't." I'm very careful with the lore that I'm operating within. She's not going to go "Oh thank goodness, she is no longer on Adhomai, time to brrreak out the rrrainbow flags!!!" Will she, maybe, eventually, after a very, very long time and internal struggle, perhaps think about displaying it, or talking about it, and rejecting the idea that she is disgusting and should be ashamed? Probably! That's character development. We all play characters from different walks of life in the lore, as aliens are as distinct and varied individuals as humans are, and this is just one of the ones I choose to do. I don't know what else to tell you.
  16. BYOND Key: Doxxmedearly Character Names: Full list in signature. Characters played for lengths of time: -Wynter Steele, Librarian -Sikaevi Suhn’Krashzkrikh (Sunny), Sec officer -Kizikh Guwan, Gardener -Sazya Xichi, Miner -Rowan Fortune, Cargo Tech -HARPI, pAI Species you are applying to play: Tajara What color do you plan on making your first alien character (Dionaea & IPCs exempt):Pink and purple Ivory (M’sai) Have you read our lore section's page on this species?: I’ve had a go over it several times, yes. Please provide well articulated answers to the following questions in a paragraph format. One paragraph minimum per question Why do you wish to play this specific race: There are a lot of good Tajaran characters around the Aurora. Initially, I didn’t have an interest, satisfied with my Unathi whitelist, but more and more I interact with Tajara and find myself getting interested in exploring them further. I was a bit confused at first about all the ethnicities and the war, which was a lot to go through, but the more I read about it the more I understood and began to enjoy the many conflicts facing them, such as a long war, racial tension, class disparity, adapting to humanity in Tau Ceti… They’re deeper than I thought, and so I’m interested in exploring and playing with these concepts as a player. I found myself thinking up character ideas as I read, and now I want to see them develop! Identify what makes role-playing this species different than role-playing a Human: You have the obvious face-level mechanical differences: Resistance to cold, weakness to warmth, claws, faster movement… There’s of course, the differences in speech (Rolling r’s and referring to themselves as “She/He” instead of “I.”) They use different body language to express themselves, such as flattening their ears or twitching their tails. There are differences in education; they are generally less educated than xenos, and there’s even educational differences within Tajara (Such as the typically-less-educated Zhan). Literacy isn’t an assumed thing for the species; the widespread introduction of such is a relatively new concept. Tajara as a whole are generally more conservative than humans, as well. This includes keeping displays of affection subtle, frowning on interracial mixing and finding inter-xeno relationships to be gross fetishism. It’s possible to have a Tajara that doesn’t share these ideas, but they are considered deviants in their society and unlikely to be open about it. These cultural and educational differences, as well as bearing in mind the prejudice between Tajaran ethnicities and tensions that may arise between supporters of the three different war factions, are things to keep in mind when playing a Tajara. Racism, war, and political fervor are all major realities for Tajara. Character Name: Nahjiya Khayaram Please provide a short backstory for this character, approximately 2 paragraphs What do you like about this character? She’s a young and naïve dreamer, trying to find a perfect ideal faction on an imperfect planet in an unfair universe, constantly being disillusioned with harsh realities clashing with her ideals. She is a perfect example of someone who falls for propaganda while searching for the “good” side of a war. She didn’t come here to escape a war, but rather to fight and contribute in a different way. She’s deeply invested in it. No “good kitty dint do nuffin’ wrong” with her. She’s fiery and passionate about what she believes, which I’m hoping will spark some interesting tension among other Tajaran crew. I don’t play enough irritable, standoffish characters. She’s compassionate, but it’s not readily obvious, given how fierce she is with her thoughts. She’s really not very bright outside of knowing how to do her job (And even then, she knows way less than her co-workers). I want to mix this in with her pride, as she’s going to be humbled frequently. This will be especially fun with her sharp attitude. There’s plenty of room for her to develop, being exposed to different cultures. She needs to grow up. She needs perspective. (Aaaand she needs to be confused about these big lizards, bugs, and trees walking around, for my own enjoyment). I don't know where she'll go from here, honestly, but I'm looking forward to finding out. How would you rate your role-playing ability? If I give myself anything less than a 9/10 I know several people who will flog me. I receive a lot of compliments that I don’t know I deserve, but I think people generally enjoy RPing with me. I’m confident in my ability to RP and maintain character; my Unathi RP started shaky but has become solid as I grew used to playing a non-human. I believe it will be the same for Tajara. Notes: -Her planned role is maintenance technician, given her background. -She worships Ma’ta’ke, with Shumaila being the goddess she focuses on. -Please help me if I got some info wrong about the lore and factions. I’m going off the wiki and PMs with Mofo. I am more than happy to correct and rewrite, as usual. I know several assumptions were made lore-wise. -Thanks, Mofo, for helping me out! Hopefully this doesn't disappoint (I’m sorry this is another cat engineer OTL)
  17. If it's not hell to code and doesn't strain the server (Idk how these things work, and honestly I'm not even sure BYOND knows how BYOND works), I think it's a good idea. I like doing decoration projects. It would also help things not get lost in large piles (Not that it's a HUGE problem, but say if the chef isn't at the counter, they might not know that I place a carton of eggs on the counter since it got buried under food. A small convenience.)
  18. Oh yeah, checked the git, looks like piano isn't on there atm. Makes sense. I love the piano, but yeah, there are definite Issues.
  19. A really good app. You can tell a lot of time and care has been put into it, and that this whitelist is genuinely interesting to them. Cactus is a really enthusiastic player who tries to involve themselves in the community, and has really good OOC conduct. They've upheld whitelist standards for some time now, and I have no reason to believe they'll be anything but an excellent addition to the Cool Lizard Players Club. The character is very solid, and you do a good job of avoiding extremes in "Everything's good" and "Horrific Tragedy." The colonization was a risk, his clan isn't 100% supportive of what he does, and it's good to understand that colonizing a new planet had plenty of hardships. I'd like to see this character around, and get to know them more as they play, to see how he balances out his goals and dreams versus the wishes of his clan as time goes on. Solid +1, excellent job.
  20. I mean. Yeah. Destructible shit is always fun. So I'm in for that idea. You can always disable the sound of it if it bothers you that much (I think?) Personally I really enjoy the piano and modifying MIDIs to make it sound NOT hellish is a fun past-time for me. I wish we could get a better soundfont for it, but that's beyond the scope of this thread. +1 for more breaking shit, but I definitely agree with Ornias.
  21. I'm almost certain that Burger's upcoming bar/kitchen redesign includes a stage area with a piano already set out.
  22. Well, I'd like to know, still. I mean, yes, taking ALL the equipment would have been in poor taste, but I don't disagree with taking half of it (1 OR's worth). My only other thought is that medical didn't check both ORs for the equipment, and perhaps assumed they were both taken. This is a pretty fair assumption on their part, if so. That, or one of us on the team got confused and we managed to take both sets, but I'm like 90% sure this wasn't the case. I wish I was totally certain, but as you said, it can't really be totally proved one way or the other. The main point I want to get across is relating to this phrase: We took the gear (planned to take ONE SET which was an explicit instruction mentioned) in order to use it for ourselves, NOT to screw anyone who got injured in the fighting. It was not some meta powergame move to dick over anyone who got injured. I want to clarify that, and the logs will also clarify our intent as we discussed it on AOOC and Merc comms. Either way, yes, it's good to make a note for anyone reading that stripping both ORs bare would be a pretty poor move.
  23. Was ALL the surgical equipment stolen? We were told to only take one OR's worth, and that's what I did (The northmost one). Fresh and Kyres were present in the OR with me, I believe. If we accidentally took both sets, then yeah, yikes, that was a bad miscomm. I thought I only saw one set in our makeshift base, though.
  24. This is one of the coolest ideas ever. I think it would be an actual item people choose from their loadout this way, and gives some nerds a game to play to boot.
  25. I like it. That's pretty good reasoning to give it to Zhan, too.
