[Denied] Sjogras's IPC Application
Doxxmedearly replied to Sjogras's topic in Whitelist Applications Archives
I wasn't trying to grill you for the paragraphs (Sorry if it came across as such); I just wanted to make sure you followed the requirements so your app would get a fair judgement. It's clearer now with your second post that you have an interest in the race and character, rather than just hastily putting up an app. I'd also like to point out going forward that I'm just a player like yourself, and you are under zero obligation to answer any of my questions if you don't feel like you want or need to. Generally this question is here so that lore devs can see that you understand that whitelisted races are not just humans with a different sprite, and that you're capable of roleplaying them as such. That's really all I was looking for you to clarify, as I wasn't totally sold that you understood this at first (I've never seen your character in-game or spoken to you OOCly, so I have to go based on what's written here). Might just want to take a peek at other whitelisted apps to see what points they addressed about their own characters. There are plenty of points to address, and I mean there's no right/wrong answer. Could be that you love their flaws, are excited to see how they interact with others, you think they're fun... no shame in enjoying the character you wrote. It's one paragraph minimum, not two, and I think this part is fine with a couple sentences. Again, it could help to look at other apps and see what people say. Nobody was asking for this. Things do not need to be this extreme for characters to be unique and interesting. Blank-slate, naive characters are very fun to play, and I do understand this (That's how my pAI is). Let me ask, then: What job do you believe you'll be playing as LBM? Cool, that's fair! Thanks for taking the time to answer that. I think overall I'm remaining neutral on this app for the time being. Good luck! -
[Denied] Sjogras's IPC Application
Doxxmedearly replied to Sjogras's topic in Whitelist Applications Archives
You may wish to edit this. This answer leaves a lot to be desired. There are more differences than just speech, and an industrial IPC can have the same amount of mannerisms as other IPCs, to my knowledge. Could you expand a bit more on the differences? And now I'm having a hard time figuring out if this app is meant to be serious. = = = The backstory tell us nothing about your character, or even what job they are intended to perform. IPCs do have personalities and unique features, even if they are mechanical. We need to see what sets LMB 51000 apart. Given your "Why do you wish to play this specific race" answer and your story, I wonder if you wouldn't just rather play a stationbound cyborg. Why do you want to play IPC, specifically? Also, this isn't the SCP wiki, you don't need to [REDACT] information. -
This is a good point, but the adult section he added would be a good place to do shady stuff. Though I agree, if that shady stuff involves maint access, this is a bit of a nerf. Believe it or not there are some librarians who enjoy staying in the library. I didn't even notice this initially, and I heartily agree. Rolling chairs make sense for the large table, but for desks? I'd go back to the big comfy chairs.
-
If it's about standardization across departments, I don't actually have an issue with it, even though I personally think it's extremely strange to have maintenance access. Would love if this access extended to the old theater just south of the library, but that might be a bit powercreepy to have access to such a secluded space. I'm more or less neutral on the light switch thing; it's not a big deal either way. A display area, is it? Huh, you know, I actually really like that. Reminds me of the libraries I worked in and visit. Okay, yeah, I'm on board with that. And yeah, I like the separated adult section. Thanks for explaining. My other suggestions and points still stand.
-
I, too, am making an edict-breaker. Expanding on what Azande/Xander said, Dominians have an actual obligation to constantly pester you, reminding you that you have sinned, and encouraging you to go back to face judgement. You can expect every Dominian character to recognize you and do this, which only adds to the distrust of strangers and soul-crushing failure that Zundy pointed out. It's doubtful that any character willingly/happily flees and denounces God and the empire, so bear this in mind when making/playing your character. You sacrifice a LOT and the crisis of faith will be huge. There's a reason that it's not uncommon for edict-breakers outside of the Empire to return for judgement/execution after constant pestering by other Dominians.

I'm probably just going to leave the mapping to Burger and add my suggestions to his thread as he updates. I'm not a mapper, as is pretty obvious. Your feedback is good, thank you.
-
Itanimulli, was that first sentence really necessary? Also, I believe the fins were the part that was left unrepaired by NT according to the backstory, so there is no need to represent them. As for the app, I think it's time the lore team weighed in. I have nothing more to add after these edits, and remain neutral on the app as it stands.

I knew when I saw Marwani as a journalist that it was only a matter of time before you'd submit a library rework. You're a good mapper, so this makes me happy. However, I dislike this current iteration. Pros: -Love the idea of the closed-off room in the lower left. -Won't say no to more space behind the desk (Although I'm not sure; do you feel this is necessary? I've never had a problem with it) -Vent in the office is always good for those of us that enjoy breathing. -Nice and open concept -You can really have books spawn randomly? That's pretty neat! -You have a really great mind for using space and rearranging structures, which is something I am afraid to do. Cons: -Could use a table/chair area that isn't out in the center. Lots of people come in to the library for private conversations or to do work in peace. Could be addressed by adding seating room in the lower-left -Not really a fan of the upper-left area. Is there a reason it's glassed-off? What is its intention? -The extra computers are kind of a waste of space. I love them aesthetically, but I've never seen anyone waiting in line for the computer before. I'd go back down to one, maybe two. -Private office is very small still, and does not address some issues -The two rows of four shelves are awkward. I would split them into blocks of two shelves, to make the genre separation more clear, and provide a little more walking room. -Missing the AI holopad, secondary newscaster, and public library requests console A lot of these cons can be chalked up to the fact that you haven't played in the librarian role, or even as a journalist, for a long time to see all the small issues that crop up. And that's totally fair; you can't predict every issue without feedback. As MO_oNy pointed out, you should look at that thread to view the list of issues that have been pointed out by me as someone who played librarian every shift for a month straight. Most notably, a bulletin board and an extra unlabeled shelf would be really handy for us, as well as a locker in the office, and keeping the filing cabinet in there as well. My map in that thread is very rough and I have never mapped before. Take it with a grain of salt and see what you can take from it as well as MO-oNy's design. I think this is a very solid start, and the library is very much in need of a facelift. I agree with this. It's not all that strange to me. I agree with this, as well. I don't see any reason a librarian would need maintenance access (As much as I would personally love being able to go grab that piano every shift). These can be changed by using a pen.

Forgot to add my newest revisions. Still a WIP but this should be a step up from my previous thoughts. Not sold on the placement of the carpeting, looking for comments. Having sets of 2-shelves makes stocking easier than 3 shelves, as mentioned before. Trying to keep the design open. Re-added the missing items (2nd requests console, hand labeler) Still want to keep the laptop vendor near the front, but again, not 100% sold on it. Sorry if a few devices were forgotten. It's just a rough layout atm. I don't actually know the first thing about github so this is more of a visual layout than a functioning map upload.

The Aurora Reader: A Library and Literary Blog
Doxxmedearly replied to Doxxmedearly's topic in NanoTrasen Public Network
Notice of Temporary Event Cancellation + Library Updates Hello, everyone. I am sad to bring you this post, as it is mainly due to my actions (or lack thereof). Letters from Home: With the month almost halfway over and only one submission to speak of, I'm shelving this literary event until a later time. It was a risk to put such an involved event in for this month, as I was aware I would be participating in fewer shifts due to personal business. As well, I had even more time taken off for bereavement due to the unexpected passing of two close friends. This resulted in being unavailable for the help and promotion needed to encourage participation in such an involved literary project. If you have a submission, please hold on to it! The event is not permanently ending, but rather will be scheduled for a timeframe where it can receive the attention it needs (Tentatively 7/2460 or 8/2460). I apologize for my lack of proper foresight, and will make sure this experience assists me in better planning these events. Feel free to use this time to plan out your work or refine your stories! Library Updates: Our adult section has expanded! Lovers of WetSkrell may wish to check out our new subscription to BadKitty! We're also working on securing a subscription to Scales 'n Stuff, so keep an eye out! In honor of the late Mother Irmguard Matrella, I would like to remind everyone that she wrote a book detailing her order, titled "The Abbey of Eternal Tolerance." We also have an anonymously-submitted memorial prayer published in her honor, titled "A Prayer for the Mother of the Aurora" Librarian's Corner: "Blue" is my latest poem, written for a dear friend who passed far before her time. Published under the name "Snow." New in Religion: Intro. to Holy Liturgy of God and the Moroz Holy Tribunal and Tenants of the Akhanzi Order Posted by Wynter Steele, 4:11pm -
Right, definitely figured that about the language, just making sure. Cool, I was just looking for that clarification. Thanks, JB.

There's a lot of good info in the Dominia wiki article, but it left me wondering a bit more about the culture of Unathi within the Empire. We already know that Ouerean and Moghean Unathi have different views, and given how the Unathi pirates originally came to the Empire, their mix with human culture, and the distance from their home system, I wondered how different things are for them? The wiki also indicates that Dominian citizens look down on Hegemony Unathi. It seems that the main tenants of honor and clans are still intact, as well as Guwan/Guwandi (in spirit). But with a whole different religion, I am curious about a few points: How are Unathi women viewed in the Empire? Is it like Moghes, or are they afforded more rights and opportunities, limited by the Noble/Freeman/Serf system? Are the Love/Lust/Duty tenants of the Th'akh and Sk'akh still a primary focus for Dominian Unathi, or is it different? How does this affect how marriage and relationships are viewed? Would Dominian Unathi still know Sinta'Unathi as a language, or is that very unlikely? I apologize if this information is available but I somehow missed it. The recent news stories and Dominian characters I've seen around are piquing my curiosity.

Love to see you took the time to consider what was said and elected to overhaul the story. It's good that you're being open to criticism and taking advice, and it says great things about you. I wanted to open by acknowledging your effort, as it's never easy to delete or change something you've worked hard on. You addressed a lot of the good points brought up by tbear. No laws, Xion frame stays a Xion frame, removed the handwavey "Wasn't perfect, slap them on a state-of-the-art research facility" bit... These were major concerns, so it's nice to see those taken care of. The underwater aspect and history of Aqua remains, which I'm personally glad was kept. We know that NT owns them now, too, and I can believe how they came to the Aurora. Had this been all, I would have a +1 for you. But I have concerns about the new detail you had added. I'm always extremely hesitant when I see people RPing mental illnesses. I don't know if the person behind the character is an expert on them, well-meaning but misinformed (Perhaps gaining their info from equally misinformed shows/movies/games), or completely ignorant. The latter two have a lot of potential for causing friction OOC by RPing the illness based on stereotypes and misinformation, which would cause serious discomfort, frustration, or anger to those who actually live with it IRL. It's a dangerous line to cross unless you're absolutely sure you know what you're doing. I invite you to ask yourself if this is a necessary part of Aqua's personality. I can't answer that for you, nor will my support hinge on the answer. What I need to ask you, and what I need a 100% honest answer to, is this: Are you confident that you are well-informed enough about DID to roleplay it realistically, while also keeping in mind the server roleplaying rules? I'm not asking if you have DID or know someone who does. I'm not prying into your life or being skeptical of you specifically. This is something I'd ask of anyone. An honest yes or no will do it for me, though of course you are under no obligation to answer anything I ask of you. I'm just a player like you.

Writing In Game Books - Why Is This So Hard
Doxxmedearly replied to Gamerlord's question in Questions
Yes, I noticed this was an issue, as well. However, the issue I was referring to with Chef Katelynn was not that they could not edit it in the WI, but they said it "didn't save," so I assumed this meant a librarian was unable to print/find it in the library. But, again, this is just an assumption, and I can see it fine in-game. The Sukh never gave Wynter a book to upload (Too good to visit me, I guess!). Also, checking my own books, there's no way to delete them. You'll probably have to post here for Coalf to delete them. -
Writing In Game Books - Why Is This So Hard
Doxxmedearly replied to Gamerlord's question in Questions
Awesome! Time to bug R&D more often as laptops are so much better for writing. I only asked because I added one book that way (Chef Katelynn's Star Menu! Author: Chef Katelynn Swarner) and next round I saw them (Which was a few rounds after the publishing) they said it "didn't save" (Though it's possible I misunderstood what was being said). I know that I can see it when I check the library, and print it as normal. Just wondering if it only appears for me, mostly. If any other librarian can confirm they see this next time they play, I'd appreciate it, and it would basically answer the question. Thanks again, Lynxx, this is very helpful. -
I like the idea, but agree with Lynxx. Also it wouldn't be bad to add sterile masks to the stock, IMO, unless there's something powerful there that I'm not aware of. Gloves, too, maybe?

Adhomian Divination Cards Deck And Moon Shaped Amulet
Doxxmedearly replied to Alberyk's topic in Completed Items
Yes, perfect, love it, thank you. +1 Klavdiya is one of my favorite sights during rounds. The readings are interesting and fun for the crew, and I think this is well-deserved. It makes sense with the lore and with the character, and fits the setting just as well as a standard tarot deck. She's a great character and I can see this making her even more interesting. -
What tbear pointed out is correct regarding frames, laws, programming, etc. That will need to be adjusted before I can give this app my support. I recommend taking another look at the wiki and addressing tbear's points. I would like to see a less hand-wavey method of Aqua coming to NanoTrasen. You should put the same amount of thought into this as you did with her backstory. This said, I like the story concept. The fins are a neat detail (Though unsure how compatible that is with lore), and it makes sense to use an IPC for underwater exploration and research. A background of underwater exploration would prepare her for space, and as she was built for research, I can see her being on the Aurora science team. I just want to know how and why Aqua was brought about the Aurora. I also wouldn't mind some more details on her personality. All in all, I think another look at the wiki, past IPC whitelist apps (There have been many recent ones), and a serious rewrite are in order. I like her background and I think she could be a great addition to the cast, but first the issues need to be addressed.

[Accepted]Furrycactus' Tajaran Application
Doxxmedearly replied to furrycactus's topic in Whitelist Applications Archives
No, not at all. It was more a question of curiosity than anything. I expect that of course you won't know, as that is shaped by so many things during roleplay. It's impossible to plan for. It's good to know that you're willing to see him through no matter how he grows. This only strengthens my +1 for you. Thanks for answering! -
Clearly I need to stock new issues of Wetskrell if Gonzalez is so bored. +1 in all honesty. Really adds to his character and is very interesting. The sprites look good, the mechanics make sense, and it fits Gonzalez well.

[Accepted]Furrycactus' Tajaran Application
Doxxmedearly replied to furrycactus's topic in Whitelist Applications Archives
I've seen your characters around, but haven't really interacted with them much with my own. That said, none of them stood out as bad or unrealistic as far as I can remember, so I'll trust what others say about your abilities. I was pretty neutral on this app until you expanded more answering coalf's questions. You seem to have a good understanding of the lore, and I believe you would be able to properly play Tajaran characters. I don't know how generic the backstory is, but that never really bothers me; as long as they have room to grow on station, there's room for them to be an interesting and unique character. I particularly am interested to see his personal growth with regards to his earlier-supressed romantic inclinations. A +1 from me. Also, out of curiosity (Don't feel obligated to answer): How do you see Asaar growing during his time on the Aurora? -

Looks nice!

Huh that's pretty rad. I'd like to see this.

Whoa! Thank you for that commentary, JackBoot! Certainly. I think the biggest thing is the difference between the roles of women on Moghes vs the Aurora. There's no doubt some traditional Unathi males may find it difficult to deal with women in higher roles especially as their captain/department head. Then of course there's same-sex relationships on board, and synthetics like IPCs walking around as an organic would. Even for Unathi who aren't super traditional, this would be an uncomfortable adjustment given the environment in which they were raised and their religious beliefs. I went off the Unathi wiki page for the Order. Specifically: So while not "Yeah be gay that rules!" they're more like "It will be much tougher to please your ancestors in this way, but it is possible." I'm well aware of the realities and troubles she'll have to face from other Unathi on the station. It's not sunshine and rainbows for her just because she's off Moghes. I understand this. I was actually flipping back and forth between having her stay with the Akhanzi or being out in the wilderness, and ultimately decided on the former. My justification is that even when she ran, she already wasn't 100% certain about it, and then when someone she cared for told her she was acting dishonorably, it fueled her inner conflict even more. Add in that she wasn't sure if her father's threats were empty or not, she didn't want to cause harm to the order she respected, so she turned herself in. Ultimately, if that ends up being an issue many people have, I would not mind adjusting that. This is a fair criticism. I think it's partly in Wynter's character to be friendly to everyone, but I agree it could be slowed down a tick or two. Thanks for pointing that out! I could never abandon my boy or my library I'm not married to the name. I would not mind thinking of another. That's a good point, and I feel silly for overlooking it now. Understood. I don't feel that it's terribly snowflakey but then again I have a hard time telling what this server considers crossing the line from interesting to snowflake. I don't think having unique characters is bad but I'm certainly not trying to make some sort of "I'm the most unique and special look at me!" arms-race here. I figured this would be a concern, and it's a fair one. Oh! I didn't realize it was such a new part of the lore, or that it was your order. I apologize for that. I was concerned if it made sense or not, or if I was overstepping any bounds. Understood. I fully intend for her to still behave like a normal Unathi, absolutely. There's no intention of her just jumping to liberal views because she's off world and I've got no intention of treating her as some sort of erp bait. My intention was not to try to subvert how normal Unathi behave, and I definitely understand wanting to keep an eye on me to make sure that stays the case. The last thing I want to do is go off and play some wholly unrealistic character given how much I respect the Unathi lore. Edit: Name updated. Pipish is now Kizikh. Thank you EVERYONE for your feedback so far.
