xTrainx Posted May 16, 2017 Posted May 16, 2017 Roboticst need RnD for basic functions of the job, like exosuit boards resrach, and positronic brain resarch, as well as cyborg upgrades and power cell upgrades for the cyborg, as well as autolathe for components. RnD is not much of a job position than a chore, but the one that are the most dependadnt on are the roboticist, not to mention, they are familiar with the equipment since half of RnD is alredy in the robotics lab. scientist can do anything they can without even touching rnd once, but roboticist need it for many of the things they would be able to do. If you don't have someone at RnD, you would ask cargo, where, for example, a xenoarcheologist can do his job even if he is the only crewmember on board. RnD can be done in as little as 15 minutes, and there never be touched again, so it's not a core part of the scientist job as it is for the roboticist.
DatBerry Posted May 16, 2017 Posted May 16, 2017 Nope Nope Nope. Research and Development is a whole other science field, if not more than one. Roboticists are barely scientists, if not for the Positronic knowledge some of them have they'd be more fitting in engineering than anything. boards can be acquired from cargo if RnD is not staffed, posibrains? though luck. you don't need, and should never be able to run your whole job to a 100% completion on your own in the science department, needing other people to finish your job is by design, so that you would have to interact with other people. all this will do is have roboticists sneaking into RnD when the scientists aren't around and avoiding contact, not to mention the mary sue powergaming aspect to it. so again, i oppose this.
LordFowl Posted May 16, 2017 Posted May 16, 2017 No. We already have the problem of roboticists up and constructing their own ghetto RnD. We should not validate this behavior.
Alberyk Posted May 16, 2017 Posted May 16, 2017 Nope, robotics has no real reason to have access to the RD lab, they can do their job fine without it. So, voting for dismissal here.
MoondancerPony Posted May 16, 2017 Posted May 16, 2017 There is absolutely no reason for this to be a thing. It eliminates the best part of science, making friends and developing relationships because you have to, you can't do everything all alone; doubly so on newmap.
Guest Menown Posted May 16, 2017 Posted May 16, 2017 Following that Train's train of logic means that officers should have armory access, doctors should have chemistry access, and engineers should have atmospherics access, since all of these positions require the others to do their job effectively. Despite it being easy as balls to do OOCly, because it's a game, doesn't mean your character would know how to break things down that easily, in Research. There's ICly a lot more to it than just slapping shit into the analyzer and out pops a new circuit board. If your character has the knowledge, you can head to the Head of Personnel or Captain to get the access, you don't need to effectively remove one position because it's never filled when you want it filled.
Lualyrr Posted May 21, 2017 Posted May 21, 2017 I am likewise against it. And I usually play Roboticist. Its supposed to be an own specialization / job. Just because the game makes it simple, doesnt mean its supposed to be bland and skillless IC'ly. A click ingame should not mean all the character IC'ly did was clicking a button.. I am fully against it.
Scheveningen Posted May 21, 2017 Posted May 21, 2017 Certain roboticists need to learn to be patient. There are other things to do to make yourself useful as a roboticist without hijacking another department just to ensure yours has more to do.
Skull132 Posted June 2, 2017 Posted June 2, 2017 Sat long enough, invoking right of second dismissal. RIP thread. Anyways, no. Because no. For all of the reasons stated above. There's a neat new mechanic on Baystation that we plan on porting to give Roboticist something new to do. Though this will be post map meme unless one of the community members I discussed it with is faster than us. Locking, binning.
