  1. I think this is a rather unfair attitude. There are people -though not great in numbers- who do try to bring strangers together and provide them with RP, or at least some RP fuel, but they rarely get attention. Instead of complaining about old characters sticking together -which makes perfect sense from every perspective but the one that demands that everybody be included in the RP equally COUGHCOMMUNISMCOUGH- I think everybody whining about chair-RP being stale and out of reach for new players should take a few moments and ask themselves, "How many times have I neglected the chaplain's cries for attendance at a sermon?" "How many times have I waved my hand over the librarian's book club?" etc. etc. Hell, just look at the manifest; there's lots and lots of roles that are absolutely dull and uneventful without other players. If you feel nobody wants to chat with you, pay a visit to the librarian, or bring a refreshment to the janitor, or go confide with the chaplain. The odds are, these people will be delighted to see you.
  2. To maintain the neutral attitude, allow me to provide a double-edged answer! I'd say self-inserts can be very useful, especially for beginning players who are learning the Auroran ways, as they do not need to think so hard about what their character would or would not do and can focus on the narration instead. The character is there and alive and good to go - and, for the most part, it's probably working, unlike some of our creations. Aaand then there's the downside. With self-inserts, one is more likely (in my opinion) to identify with their character too much and be genuinely, OOCly upset about their misfortunes. Not to mention what happens when somebody points out some self-inserted character's traits as stupid and unlikeable. I mean, damn!

    Response to RP

Like Tainavaa says. They have the right attitude. One more thing, though - Not true. You get thirty minutes of "penalty" after which you can join in with another character. So no. You cannot use those three damn hours as an argument against narrating an intriguing story instead of trying to come out on top of every situation. From there, a connection can be made to another argument, but that is essentially already expressed in what Taina said; that if you acknowledge what is happening to your character and can bring yourself to see yourself as responsible for delivering appropriate feedback*, dying can be a lot of fun. And at that point, everybody wins. *I mean, your role as a player of SS13 -on Aurora, anyway- is strangely dual. One should be able to recognize and act in accordance with their character and their aims and wishes (such as, not to die) while at the same time being responsive to whatever stimuli your character is receiving. We ought to narrate both our actions and our reactions.

  5. I don't really see how that adds any depth to your character - while it has a bit more narration to it than the workgloves, essentially, it still has no other use (doesn't really feel like the correct word, I hope you see what I mean) than adding some swag to Rebecca. If I may make one more point, it is not necessary to have a custom item. Vast majority of characters do just fine without them. I don't mean to discourage you from applying for one, no; but right now, I get the impression that you really want to have a custom item and spend a lot of energy trying to come up with a suitable one. Rather, sit back, have a couple of games, and who knows - something might happen that will develop your character's story and leave you with something that would be great to carry around as a reminder of that event. Or something like that. Don't try too hard.
  6. Sorry for bringing this up again, but REASONS Uh, nope! First point to make - it does say that the fungi nowadays have ways of not harming their hosts whatsoever, possibly even developed intentionally out of sheer respect for all life - an attitude that's developed from the undeniable fact that they themselves are parasites, and cannot feel entitled to living as a natural right like we might, since that would be an absurdity; to consider their lives "granted" while originally requiring others to die in the process of sustaining themselves. (I thought I made it pretty clear that they were as pacifist as it gets?) Furthermore - It doesn't say anywhere that they kill sentient, civilized beings. Quite the contrary, if I remember correctly. But you have in fact demonstrated why I considered them such a great addition to Aurora, specifically in the spheres which I feel are lacking - PHILOSOPHY. A living fungi aboard implies there is a being that's killed to live, you say. Alright. How is it different from the Unathi swallowing monkeys whole? Or any species eating meat, really? Come on, guys! This could be fun! Maybe. For some. Perhaps not many. Igam Yute?
  7. What Tainavaa just said. Also it might be worth mentioning that estabilished characters as nukeops have provided us with lovingly creative conflicts in the past - Winston Carton/Stein had often shown regret and restrain and even hints on the possibility of abandoning his antag role altogether because of his ties to certain characters. And overall, there's not really much room for preparing your antagonist's character, and very often -I feel - the antagonists are nothing but just that; the bad guys. Slapping an already living character onto your antagonist makes them human. Relatable to. Creates new perspectives and possibilities. It might provide them with an unfair advantage, but then; wasn't it our motto of sorts, that we are here to roleplay, create entertaining stories, rather than win? I'd be happy to lose to Carton any day of the week.
  8. Hi. So, I haven't been around much. But I haven't been slacking, either! Custom cover for the VALIS trilogy A comics thingy Because inconsistency in themes and tools used alike A custom cover for Transmigration of Timothy Archer
  9. Do we still play on 1+? Because I would love to 1+. This is the most philosophical approach to roleplaying I've seen here since Igam Yute, and it comes off so... natural. Not forced. Not trying to be quasi-intellectual. So easy to fall in love with. Please let this happen.
  10. This may come across a completely off, coming from somebody who's fairly succesfully cut themselves away from the game and community alike - but hey, who knows, maybe that perspective is what is lacking here. I would just like to point out that this, what we're doing here, is playing a game - and that we are all here because we love the game, imperfect as it is. I haven't been there for these arguments, I can't tell who started what and who's in the right, and frankly, I don't think it matters at all. What matters from where I'm standing is, and I would like to emphasize this as much as possible; you people are presently all being deeply upset by something that has happened on the internet. Not even in the actual game, but in the lore; don't get me wrong, I love the lore, I love this universe we pretend to live in, but let's face it, it can never become as immersive as the game itself. The lore is sort of a sauce around the main meal, a background to the game we play. It is understandable, though no less silly, that events of the game in which one is immersed might personally upset them. It is much sillier than that to become hostile to one another because of this. Think again; we've all come here to have fun. Why would you ruin your fun over such petty matters. Tadaah! In my dreams, this is the point where everybody feels amused and a bit ashamed for letting a let's-pretend become so real to them, waves their hand over the matter and forgets the whole thing. Because, you know. This is the only way to solve this without anybody getting (butt)hurt. And it would be awful shame if somebody were to be hurt over a game. Perhaps another perspective to ponder; none of us are entitled to the game. The lore team's work should adapt to the players' desires -such as Nursie's, but everything I've seen so far leads me to believe that Jackboot is trying to do exactly that; provide enjoyable universe for the players, as opposed to one's desire to shape a universe out of our fantasies. And while the players' voices should be heard, they should also express constructive criticism and be directed at the lore, not people in the development team. But now I'm straying. Let me end it with this; before you say anything, pause and reflect. Are you upset? Yes? Then you would do best to turn off the computer and go for a walk. You came here to have fun; if you are not having fun, then frankly that is your problem and can be resolved entirely by changing your attitude. I wish I had better words for this... clinically speaking, most psychological issues are conflict between your consciousness and subconsciousnes, respectively, between our experience of reality and our idea of reality. When reality doesn't live up to my expectations, I am distressed. The only way to become better is not to change the world, obviously, but to give up on your delusions and come to terms with the world and love it for what it is. To finish the parallel; there's plenty to enjoy about the game regardless of what the lore is like (how often does the lore directly affect the roleplay?). Make RP not hate. I'm so sorry for the rant. I haven't slept in three days.
  11. Dawkins is quite capable regardless of what he does, and inspires respect. That's what I've gathered from how people talk about him, I mean, because when he talks to Dan, he's always a damn manbaby in I don't want to be a captain black jumpsuit. But jokes aside. I've spent a lot -a lot- of time with Avery, although most of that time, he was whining about Kimberly not being present on the shift...and then there was that incident with him stealing Dan's things. From her smoking remains. Note: emotionally detached from reality Ave performs great in positions of authority, but seems uncomfortable in civil roles - there he mostly comes off as ill-at-ease, and appears to have trouble holding conversation beyond mere "hey, how are you". Note: superiority complex, possible hints at sadism? Add to that his obsession with Kim and you get a terribly deranged man with little to no touch with reality. In all likelihood, he has had a terribly traumatizing childhood and had shut himself in, cut himself off from other people (possible tragedy, loss of close relatives?) - all the pieces come together; his unability to interact with other people unless provided with a false sense of security through the authority and respect associated with a high rank; his sitting in the Medbay lobby, demanding attention; his clinging to a motherly figure. I forgot where I was going with this. Ave's fun!
  12. Aurora remembers.
  13. You are missing the point - we're not talking antagonists, but regular playable race, at last one that isn't humanoid and might be able to provide a new angle with regard to RP. That is a valid perspective, one that I am perfectly aware of ever since I have the access to the charts of all the stuff that should be done and isn't done.

    Ape Race

Sounds like the perfect moment to mention my longing to implement a completely non-humanoid race, the Fungi! http://aurorastation.org/forums/viewtopic.php?f=18&t=1362
  15. In hindsight, the similarities between the Fungi and the Cortic Borers should make this easier, rather than anything. Wink wink?
  16. Fuck. And it is off.
  17. It. Is. On.
  18. Rech and RunningWithScissors do!
  19. No. Just... no. 1) Since only Security and Heads can see those records, anyway, then there is no doubt whatsoever that this would only find practical use in giving the Security chance to brig people before they had even done anything, for being extremely suspicious and known troublemakers and whatnot. See, people do remember who does well and who behaves like a jackass. People remember a lot of stuff on Aurora, and basically, whatever you do will be stuck with you. That is actually much greater problem, the metagaming; if anything, this would encourage it. 2) If those 'notorious criminals' were detrimental to the ArhPee of the game, they would have received permanent notes. By the mods. If they remain in game, then their influence in all likelihood isn't considered negative. You have to keep in mind, our aim is not to abolish crime aboard Aurora; we love crime. I remember a thread where we were trying to encourage drug distribution aboard.
  20. Oh boy do I love to tell this story. The first time I ever tried SS13, I logged onto one of those servers where assistants start with a plastic bag. I had no idea what I was getting into - I decided I would just click some buttons, figure out how things work. Within a minute or two, I've managed to put the bag over my head and, unable to get it off, I suffocated. Hello Space Station 13! I would basically just log onto different servers, try to RP for a minute or so, fail terribly and stuff an SSD down the disposals. The admins would yell at me, I'd log off, and repeat somewhere else. The milestone was this one time when I found myself flying in space, running low on oxygen and raping the hell out of the pray button. Skull answered those prayers and summoned up an entire bloody location within a few minutes to act out a religious experience for me. Haven't left Aurora ever since, except for a round or two at Colonial Marines. Edit: I have this feeling I knew how to make improvised grenades before I knew how to behave.
  21. Most certainly. Do you have anything specific in mind? Otherwise, I'll just throw some random sprites at you and see what sticks.
  22. In the light of my recent attempt at the Sue-ness test, which turned out to make her the anti-Sue bad sort of character... Any thoughts/criticism on Daniela Baranova?
  23. This is not really for me to discuss, but... I'm gonna do it anyhow! As I have tried to point out, the reason for the ban appearing appropriate for all antagonist roles and not just for changeling would seem to be that you remain unaware of your responsibility as an antagonist to provide entertaintment for the 'regular' players, rather than rek' them and win the round. Why I keep repeating this - I believe that the moment you fully comprehend this, you will be able to have your bans lifted and do your 'job' properly this time... or, you may realize that instead of providing fun, you'd much rather have fun, and won't long for antag roles no more. Howg. I'm done.
