[Resolved] Character Complaint - Luxo Khazarazir
alexpkeaton replied to Ornias's topic in Complaints Boards Archive
I see a common theme in this thread. "ISD was busy/dead, so I did ISD stuff." That is simply not appropriate for IA. It just isn't. IA is not ISD. That implant doesn't give you special authority. Your job is internal affairs, not antag hunting. -
I am pretty sure beverage dispensers and chem dispensers were available in the cargo ordering system previously. I cannot find them now. If they are there, I would appreciate being pointed to where I can find them. Which leads me to this: a searchable ordering database would be awesome, especially because it is hard to go through everything to find what you want. Paradise has searchable autolathes and protolathes (which would also be cool), you might be able to find the code for the basis of such a querying system in Paracode.

[1 dismissal] Corporate punishment system reworked
alexpkeaton replied to MO_oNyMan's topic in Rejected Policy
I applaud the effort to think outside the box here, but I do not believe it would be effective to switch things around in the manner prescribed. I do believe that hard time translates into deterrent, even 5 minutes hard time. People don't want to be arrested because it's not just the 5 minutes in a cell. It's the 3-5 minute interaction with security and a 5-8 minute walk to sec and processing before the timer starts. Time adds up. But, despite brig time being a deterrent IMO, I also believe that time with sec is not necessarily lost time. There is plenty of time to RP and strategize. Overall, it's a -1 from me, but let me say what I do agree with. What can I get on board with from the OP? -Being more apt to invoke a fine for a first offense (whether or not after an optional warning). I have done my fair share of minor crimes. Haven't been fined once. Especially when there is no evil intent, it might be nice to get docked some pay. And, since the OP considers the notion of cross-round consequences, if we ever instituted a persistent economy which has been whispered about in the past, fines would be the way to do that. -It doesn't make sense that people can simply walk away from the brig after serving a sentence for say, a medium crime, with zero impact to their job. Yes, only CCIA can effect cross-round punishments ICly. That should not change. But department heads and the HoP should be more involved in the actions of their staff within rounds. Unfortunately, this is more an indictment of them than an indictment of the system - the system does provide for causes of demotion due to criminal activity. It is just on the heads to be aware of it and to implement it when it happens. That sort of IC RP can translate across rounds and can eventually lead to situations where heads will seek to have CCIA intervene after a couple of shifts where so-and-so had to be demoted for crimes. -
Shutters crush on Paradise with broken bones a near guarantee. This is done too often by accident on the bridge there where the lockdown shutters come down in between entrance airlocks. Be careful what you wish for. You think AI's can doorcrush to great effect now? Just wait until the departures checkpoint is their playground on malf. EDIT: Or do you mean the two-tile wide doors? If so, ignore the above.

[Resolved] Character Complaint - Luxo Khazarazir
alexpkeaton replied to Ornias's topic in Complaints Boards Archive
This is going awfully down the rabbit hole here about warrants. Let me ask, is it often that Captains observe crimes occurring on green and direct an officer to make an arrest sans warrant? Is that really the warrantless arrest problem that Aurora is having and IA needs to respond to? Sounds like an awfully special case to me. The Captain could author the warrant and the HoS works for him - don't forget that if the Captain were replaced by the HoS in this surgeon scenario, there would be no problem. Personally, I'm not convinced that there should be any difference between the loyalty-implanted HoS observing a crime and directing an officer, that works for him, to make an arrest, and the loyalty-implanted Captain observing a crime and directing an officer, who works for him, to make an arrest. I think that saying an officer breached procedure is going too far. If anything, the Captain breached procedure, and then only by not signing his name to a piece of paper. It is splitting hairs to say the officer was in the wrong. And no, IA's duty is not to split hairs. -
Community Discussion: Multiple jobs - Job hopping - Realism vs Gameplay
alexpkeaton replied to Faris's topic in General
And here is why you’ve derailed the discussion. At no time in my initial post do I differentiate between command and other roles jobhopping to bartender and chef. I am saying that those jobs should be filled only by qualified individuals only who are trained in the discipline and hang their shingle full time in food/drink service. I replied to your initial comment agreeing that command hops to barkeep and chef do not make sense, but my original post does not make any differentiation. The only way people with other full-time roles aboard should be in the kitchen or bar making food should be at HoP’s discretion only, and then only access, not employment. You have pushed my thoughtful post down by five entries based on not reading what I wrote. It’s in the forum rules. I don’t even know where to begin with this comment. It’s ludicrous and borderline trolling. People have hobbies. HoP has discretion on access. All I am saying by using the word “hobbies” is that they can come on board as a visitor and see the HoP for additional access in the kitchen/bar but at no time should they be considered employed in those disciplines nor expected to replace someone from from being employed in those disciplines. Also, HoP has every right to say no to add’l access. And I address the visitor policy implications in my OP, which I ask that you read fully before posting again. -
Community Discussion: Multiple jobs - Job hopping - Realism vs Gameplay
alexpkeaton replied to Faris's topic in General
Sure they are hobbies, in addition to being careers. I made the distinction in my post. Some people enjoy mixing drinks or making food but don’t get paid to do it. That’s called a hobby. Some people get paid to do those things. That’s called employment. Would you care to explain how it makes any sense for a command staff member to make such a large jump in paygrade when taking other jobs aboard the station, then? I have yet to see the issue addressed, unlike the other talking point which sums to "people can have hobbies", which does not quite contribute to the discussion in any meaningful fashion aside from stating it simply for nuance. Schev, you are derailing this discussion by not having read my initial post which provides for how hobbies can work. I agree that command staff shouldn’t be employed as a chef or bartender, they should only be permitted to share the space while as a visitor. Please don’t respond with the visitor policy because I acknowledge it in my post. -

Community Discussion: Multiple jobs - Job hopping - Realism vs Gameplay

I think job hopping can happen under two circumstances: 1. You are a new player to the server (less than two weeks) with no published backstory. You want to try out different roles. It’s not optimal that they use the same character but it is going to happen and we should give just a bit of leeway to this. When you’ve been here long enough that a staff member notices the hopping and lack of backstory, the player should be noted by staff and given the opportunity to make a new character next time or settle on their path. These initial job hops can be considered non-canon when the player develops their backstory (allow the player to retconn their first few shifts as necessary if they job hopped) 2. It makes sense on a case by case basis from backstory, and in extreme/unusual cases, validated by a staff member in notes so the player doesn’t get constantly questioned. Personally, I think moonlighting as an EMT (and in some cases paramedic and possibly even nurse) should be okay across the board. Medical certifications expire and you need to work in the field IRL every now and again to keep up those things. Moonlighting happens in the medical field both for certifications and for $$. In addition to volunteer EMTs IRL, some people switch careers from medical to something else and keep their old career serviceable just in case. Chef and bartender job hops from other roles should be okay across the board where it makes sense in a character’s backstory. However, I also believe that these roles should not be official paid roles but rather obtained by the player starting as a visitor and getting access via the HoP. Am I advocating changing the visitor policy? Yes, sort of. This would only be for bartender and chef hobbies, and the access should be considered exactly that, not an official listed job, just “you have access to the bar/kitchen to work your hobby.” (So you are not getting hired to do something, you are just being given the ability to share the space) ID should still read “Visitor” or “Visitor with X Access” - as always, this would be at the HoP’s discretion, with the official line being that NT will employ those positions only from the established bartender or chef pools, and it is up to the visiting hobbyist to defer to an employed staff member’s guidelines. Any conflicts should be resolved by the Head of Personnel with deference given to the employed staff member(s), within reason. -
Would Eleanor Shen want to deal with being the arbiter of two HoS's in conflict with one another, giving conflicting orders? It just wouldn't work. The idea of a sergeant is not a terrible idea, however short of a whitelist and some pretty defined boundaries, it will end up terrible. And having a whitelist for a sergeant is like having a whitelist for Warden... or Quartermaster...

[Denied] Staff Mod Application - Ariever
alexpkeaton replied to ariever's topic in Moderator Applications Archives
My question is this: why did you appear to take your Citadel app seriously and not this one? Relevant: https://citadel-station.net/forum/showthread.php?tid=745 Also, while this doesn't appear to be the aheal you refer to that got you demodded, can you summarize what happened in this mod complaint against you and what you learned from it? https://citadel-station.net/forum/showthread.php?tid=849 -
So my holidays have been busy, and that is most of the reason why I haven't been on the server in going on three weeks or so. But the other part of the reason is some new games I've picked up during the holidays. I got a Super Nintendo Classic and Rainbow Six Siege among other things. They've provided so much fun and distraction that I have yet to unpack my laptop from my trip to see my family. What's new from your holidays that is competing with your time on the Aurora?

Strong +1 here. The character of Andie is fantastic. Easily on my list of favorite players to RP with either of my Jack's (Tanner or Edwardson). I definitely support providing new ways for McKinney/Candelaio to RP. I've not been on the server for a couple of weeks but if I'm ever aboard as a QM Jack Edwardson if Roscoe is greenlit, I would be happy to help facilitate a purchase through the cargo account. The character is interesting and the time period choice is fantastic. I am curious how Roscoe will portray ATLAS considering his human contact and programming has been pretty much a group of ATLAS supporters, yet the time period involved America fighting a war against the original space nazis. Does not compute? This is not at all meant to be a negative but rather an invitation, I notice you have just a few forum posts and would love to see your take in the community here on the forum since you are so active on the server.

Lower the Heist readied-player requirement down from 15 to 12
alexpkeaton replied to MattAtlas's topic in Archive
Yes. 9 crew ... but that's just at roundstart. Any latejoiners add to that total. And let's face it, engineering is pretty incompetent most rounds even fully staffed, I don't think stealing four randos from the player pool will change that too much. When you think about it, a NT station with a skeleton crew would be the ideal target for heisters. Is giving the crew a raw deal by lowering the player requirement really a bad thing? Space pirates happen, and will pick on the weak. -
Also, and I know this is still a bit bugged, but is it possible for R&D to get their own doorbell? Robotics has one but it would be nice for cargo deliveries if R&D had a doorbell also. And, medbay's doorbell could be moved as it is easily covered by something on that table. It could be attached to the glass (not sure if this is possible) between the two windoors of medbay's reception. Instead of placing the doorbell near the door, place it at the windoors of reception. Like a bell that you would ring if nobody is manning the reception desk at your doctor's office. It would encourage people to come to the desk and not the door to try and let themselves in. Thanks for considering these as well!

It would be nice if the QM's office had electrochromic glass and a privacy switch to darken them. Thanks!

I come from med-RP Paradise, spent 2+ years there. Everyone can (and will) have full knowledge of antags. Wizards are Enemies of the Corp, always, even when they are not. Get your valids. So when I first came to Aurora, and saw an arcane tome, I casually asked "Is there a cult?" The response was "What's that?" and it started what seemed like an Abbott and Costello routine where I talked about common cult things and they had no idea what I was talking about (then I reread the wiki and realized antag info isn't common knowledge here). And boy, was it refreshing! Where I am going with this is the following: when I am an antag, any treatment short of a greytide pile-on feels like freedom. I really feel for wizards and ninjas as they can exist as the lone antags of the round. When I rolled ninja early on in my Aurora tenure, I felt super-responsible to provide a decent foil to security and a solid RP experience. I likely failed on both counts, but I was grateful that security gave me a wide berth and didn't go nuts over some non-violent trespassing (they showed up, but we talked it out). If they kill me, or give me a HuT, it essentially becomes extended for everyone. Nobody likes realizing it was an antag round for the first time from the endround report because the antag(s) got robusted by security 20 minutes in. My personal stance is that antags should (continue to) get a wide berth on this server, and I'm okay with that. I'm not saying look away from witnessed criminal activity -any antag should know that once they start committing major crimes in broad daylight, all bets are off- but to take any suspicion with a grain of salt and ask yourself if that suspicion is objectively legit or a product of metaknowledge. IMO, people on Aurora are already pretty good at doing this.

The notion that hacked drones are mostly harmless is a non-starter with me. They are basically full-fledged engi-borgs that can escape through vents and hide under tables. I haven't seen hacked drones on Aurora, but I've seen a few on Paradise. They are a menace. You don't even notice they are hacked (despite there being a sprite-swap involved on Paradise) until you are in crit on the floor and they have skittered into the nearest vent. You've grown so accustomed to them being harmless and out of your way. IMO from Paradise, hacked drones can be a little OP. Also, during a malf round, dead players may meta and hop into a drone upon dying so they can be hacked. More than one or two of these devils roaming around could easily take over key parts of the station, bolt/electrify/weld doors, disassemble critical infrastructure or depressurize areas... and all that is just if they don't decide to go on a no-holds-barred murder spree. I'd like to see what kind of hacked laws a drone might get, but assuming it is the standard emagged borg concept, it's a -1 from me.

Lower the Heist readied-player requirement down from 15 to 12
alexpkeaton replied to MattAtlas's topic in Archive
The only concern I have is that with a lower player count there is likely to be a lower staff count. Heist introduces vox to the mix and ensuring appropriate RP could be a thing. That said, more always join after round start, including the typical camper or two who don't ready up and wait to see what's available. The count just needs to be enforced on the ready up number. If there were statistics on how many players/ghosts a round ends with during lowpop times, this could reinforce the notion of lowering roundstart requirements for Heist. All in all, +1. It wouldn't hurt to try it out and revert it if an issue is noticed. -
I'm happy to see a player enthusastic and wanting to do more after a week here on Aurora. I think some of the comments here are frequent criticisms of new players, jobhopping (I did that too in my first week) and malpracticebay, especially. I would recommend at least 3 or 4 months of solid experience on the server, and at least a couple of stints in an interim head role, before applying for IAA again. I would also recommend a headmin lock and archive this before the pile-on gets out of hand. -1 for now. Welcome to Aurora!

I like the general idea. But simple mobs can break immersion too. They should have a wide range of possible phrases. Also, what should happen if someone attacks a simple mob or tries to strip them of gear? Because people will try... and real security can't reach them there. Even if they are invulnerable, there should be some way of dealing with chucklefuckery.

Make being under anesthesia slowly generate cryptobiolin
alexpkeaton replied to sdtwbaj's topic in Archive
I like the idea. But here's my fear: crappy surgeons who essentially take you out of a round for 20 minutes because you're under anesthetic the whole time, and then, on top of that, you have a multiplied recovery period because you were under anesthetic for the whole time. I would suggest capping the potential max debuff after, say, 5 minutes of anestetic. Or, perhaps code it so that after 15 minutes of anesthetic, your body adapts and starts metabolizing the debuff while still under general anesthetic, so, after 5 minutes of surgery, you might have 5 minutes of the debuff. 10 minute surgery, 10 minute debuff. 15 minutes surgery, 15 minute debuff. But then, 20 minute surgery, 10 minute debuff. 25 minute surgery, 5 minute debuff, and 30+ minute surgery, 0 minute debuff (assuming you are under anesthetic the entire time. Whatever debuff is given, it shouldn't be a chem. Then you'll just have powergaming surgeons toss their patients into sleepers and use dialysis after surgery. +1 assuming malpracticebay is taken into account. -
What I typically do is I do word replacement. That could be accomplished with code. For example: Doctor: You have brain damage. Patient: I feel fine. I most certainly do not have pop tarts.
