Chinese Man Yaps About Aurora Asian Lore
wowzewow replied to wowzewow's topic in Suggestions & Ideas
Honestly, I think it's fine in a logistical sense - our lore is extremely dense, so it takes the mental load off people when it's a very easy to remember mnemomic of "this planet = this ethnicity". My main issue is that if you're going to lump in a bunch of them together on one planet, there should be equal representation, or the very least, writing it in a way that's a synthesis of all of them for the ethnicities you're trying to represent on that particular planet, because if they're represented poorly, you're shit out of luck because that's your only option. -
This isn't in Lore Canonization Applications because this is mostly just my stream of consciousness, not concrete enough for proper revisions. Speaking of which, be nice to the Lore Team, since they're working with shoddy foundations balanced on a house of cards, etc. Konyang : For something that's supposed to represent Chinese/Korea/Japan, it is FAR too Korean-dominated. Imagine if there was a "Great Britiain" planet, supposed to represent English/Scottish/Irish. Except all of the signs and major place names were in Gaelic. And the planet was called Gaeltacht. Because of this, despite it being the premier "East Asian" planet, I don't find it very appealing for my (asian) characters to have their origin from there. Outside of a Korean character, it just feels misrepresenting. And another gripe is having New Hong Kong. Which is already covered by New Hai Phong. Which is just silly. At the very least the name should be changed. Frankly speaking, though. Konyang, conceptually, can work. Taiwan, Korea and Japan have a lot of similarities already (Mainland China is it's own thing) - they just need to be balanced accordingly. Sol Alliance : Sol Common is just Chinese, and the shtick is just "Hail Xi Jinping. Glory to the CCP." It feels like a Baystation holdover. A bunch of planets have Chinese cities and cultural stuff, but they mostly feel like afterthoughts - like, "oh, shit, we're supposed to be chinese". Which unfortunately doesn't culminate into an actual, appreciable chinese planet nor origin - which ideally, would've been supplemented by Konyang, but doesn't work for reasons stated. New Hai Phong doesn't count for me, because it's supposed to represent Guangdong/Continental Southeast Asia. Dominia : Same as above, although reasonably, Dominia is it's own, separate thing. Although, strangely, House Zhao has no ethnic restrictions. John Zhao is a perfectly legal character. Which is silly. That's about it, I guess. Kill me with hammers if I missed something that completely invalidates everything I've said.

Even as a stickler for retaining as much features as possible, PDA charging is honestly just busywork with no real net benefit. The difference being is that most "fun" busywork is mainly player-driven : Janitors cleaning up messes made by other people, paperwork made by a Head of Staff, to be filled out by someone else, someway, somehow, you're interacting with someone. PDA charging is just...there. It's ESPECIALLY bad during events or exoplanet expeditions since there's only outlets on the ships. It doesn't contribute to anything, it actively hinders RP since you might miss an important PDA message if you haven't charged it, and you might actually MISS RP since you're chained to a wall charging the damn thing. Even so, at the very least, I think the battery life should be extended to at least match or exceed regular rounds, and have a little randomization. If a round goes on a little too long, you can go "oh, damn, my PDA's run out, it's been a long day", or it'll only go out if you actively try to waste battery, e.g. leaving the flashlight on, etc.

I was a bit light on details, but to elaborate : - They aren't going to spawn in emergency toolboxes. The red emergency box you spawn with that comes with a small air tank and air mask. - Pocket crowbars deal less damage and are shittier than normal crowbars. Think impact wrenches and screwdrivers.
-
This is already a thing in other servers where the Emergency Box comes with a pocket crowbar. This should probably be added. No need to fanagle with airlocks.

I think conflating two completely seperate and different communities from just a word "execute" is a stretch. Also, this is a gross misinterpretation of my suggestion. "John Spess is looking to DOOM Eternalâ„¢ Glory Kill you, do you accept? Yes/No" doesn't particularly roll off the tongue. On the contrary, I think having something like this would encourage deaths in the cinematic sense. We've got people with DNR, people looking to die for someone else's character arc, "making the ultimate sacrifice"... I can't say for certain how common this is, but I've seen plenty of players enjoy dying for the plot.
-
Has this ever happened to you? Thinking about aura farming with your HOS killing some ne'er-do-wells, or dropping someone with a well placed headshot as an Antag, only for this to happen? ...you shoot like, three bullets, point blank at them, and they stay standing for a few seconds, and then they fall over, and they continue to bleed out, and the moment's kind of ruined... So, basically. If you've got a gun up to someone's temple, or a sword around someone's neck, you can request to execute someone for dramatic effect. A little box will pop up "John Spess is looking to execute you! Yes/No" and after a short delay (you can resist to back out if you change your mind), blam! You die. Utterly and completely. Glory kill stuff for extra cool points. Gun executions blow peoples heads up. Sword executions decapitate people. Laser rifles disintegrate people's heads. etc. It's also good for people who want to leave the round and don't particularly care about the possibility of medical rescuing them. And you know, martyr themselves and die in the coolest way possible.

I really regret putting "consent" in the title now because people are jumping to conclusions. My fault for clickbait title. Again. The Antag is fully within their means to just point blank you if they need to. This is simply an extension to how our current Exploitables system operates where if they have the time to RP, they can read it and play around it. There are no overarching moderation changes, no policy changes, no antag escalation changes... This is just an update to the small forgotten box called "Exploitables". Nothing more.
-
Clickbait title is clickbait. Kind of. Anyway. I think it's time to rework the exploitables section. Right now it's woefully underused for good reason : it takes too much effort to write, and too much effort to read. Antags are already spinning a lot of plates to read them. If no one reads it, then it's useless to fill it out anyway. Ideally, it would be adjoined to a "OOC Exploitable consent" toggle in your character creator. For example, when an Antag would examine you, it would show : "This is John Spaceman! ... Kidnapping - NEUTRAL Torture - NEGATIVE Blackmail - POSITIVE Extortion - NEUTRAL Bribery, etc. etc... Exploitable Information" So, from a glance, an Antag would know that they'd probably get the best mileage by blackmailing them RP-wise. Now, why Positive-Neutral-Negative, rather than a Yes/No? Mainly because sometimes, an antag's just going to have to shoot you point blank in the face. Shit happens. But when they are afforded the luxury to take their time, they can make the best of an RP situation. As an addendum this can be extended to Psionics and other similar mind altering gimmicks. Also with Srom and mind-reading or whatever.

This is tangentially related to the Engineering Slot reduction PR - I'm just opening a discussion. Clickbait title is clickbait. Aurora is growing. It's been a long while since we've got new faces. Now here's the thing : we currently have no systems in place to accomodate more people. Our mapping is extremely poorly designed for any alternatives too. A lot of our current procedures are to turn people away from playing the game, which is pretty abhorrent. Example 1 : Oddyseys - especially during events. Our server regularly hits the limit during them, and if you miss a roll, tough luck. You're stuck playing Off-duty, which is essentially for the most part a "cuck" role. And you can't really go up to the XO for a job assignment, nor have the XO open up more job slots which is a standard feature on other servers. Example 2 : Regular rounds. On Highpop, it's pretty common for people to be fighting over slots. Lose the roll, and you miss your chance of playing the game. Off-duty for you. You are literally locked away from your friends. You can go up to them, but it feels horrendous. You just watch as they get to play the game. Might as well play observer. It can be argued that you can fill in less played departments (Science, mainly), but I feel that's just Off-duty with extra steps. Example 3 : Let's say, you win the roll. Unfortunately, you're a new player. Aurora's gotten really good at being inclusive, but still - it's pretty insurmountable to break into the scene against established characters. It's just human nature. If, say, you were also paired up with other new players, it's a lot less daunting. I can't particularly give any concrete solutions other than "map more stuff" and "add more roles"... (that's up to you) But the matter of the fact is, that if we don't take these growth periods seriously, we aren't taking Aurora's sustainability seriously either. Food for thought. I just wanted to start a discussion.

BYOND Key: Wowzewow Total Ban Length: Indefinite Banning staff member's Key: @Melariara Reason of Ban: Posting questionable content and inappropriate comments on Discord Reason for Appeal: I got too comfortable in engaging in these kinds of comments without fully thinking through the repercussions. As a member of Staff I should've known better, and seeing myself as above the rules was a completely reckless and dismissive assumption. I've taken the time to reflect on myself. That I need to properly think through my actions, and whether things are to be better left unsaid. Things like this reflect badly on the server, and would offend and otherwise alienate users. I do wish to continue to contribute constructively to Aurora. I understand why I was punished and I accept full responsibility for it.
-
I feel this is more of a mapping issue than anything else. Right now there's two places where bodies mainly go : Medical's morgue, and the Investigator's morgue. Consequently both are locked behind several layers of each department's access, which practically forces any chaplain to pull teeth just to get at a body.

Bring back CMO in the pharmacy
wowzewow replied to DekserBecauseILostMyAccoun's topic in Suggestions & Ideas
I feel like this can be easily solved by adding some more medications to the Cargo Order manifest and then having the CMO use the department account to purchase them if a Pharmacist's unavailable. You don't even need a CMO, you just need to plan ahead and purchase them on your own accord if it's that much of a problem. Speaking of - there's already an alternative to Pharmacist - Botanists can grow plants which produce some T2 meds like Bicaridine and Kelotane. I suggest you open a PR adding these medications to the Cargo Order program if they aren't already in the game. Voting for dismissal. -
Eh, sure, fix it so that it's DEFAULT_BOX_STORAGE
-
This is rather silly - you can already fold and unfold boxes, you can basically do the same thing with the plentiful mask and glove boxes that are so generously strewn about medical already. And, what - there's only two sharps boxes on the entire ship? One for each surgical theater? Voting for dismissal.
-
Voting for dismissal. The point of the PR was to avoid departments becoming complete autarkies that basically can shut themselves from needing to interact with other departments for their needs. Speaking of - since this was a mini-event, I'd liken that it'd expected that there'd be more action, and therefore more resources to be used. I'm going to chalk it up as inexperience due to the recency of the PR, but I think at least someone should've ordered something from Supply at the very least.

also when it gets compressed down into the 32x32 in game sprites it'll be impossible to actually tell and we'll have to fall back to straight lines

Honestly, these flags are great, Goolies. I have a bit of feedback, if you don't mind. - I love the Greenland-ization of Silversun. Makes the colors really *pop*. However, the bezier-curve wavy reflection is just too digital. Flags are designed physically, with straightedges and compasses. It's too obvious that this was made in a computer program. Of course, you could argue that this is the future and this doesn't matter, but this just means the flag looks more like a corporate .svg free online powerpoint graphics starter kit, rather than a sit-down serious flag. - I think the hammer and sickle is a bit too on-the-nose that "VENUS IS COMMUNIST". I feel the deep crimson red and yellow stars already evokes strong soviet vibes, and it doesn't necessarily lock the planet into full on communism, but rather more broader strokes of socialism. - Pluto, I think the pink/purple are way too close together. Once you squint (or better yet, squish them down to the 32x32 pixel art flag size), they're basically indistinguishable. I think they should be made the same color, or have them be completely different. As for the cantons, personally, I like them staying, mainly because of what the Solarian Alliance really represents. It's an authoritarian empire first and foremost, under the guise of democracy. It's Sol-dominated, and it shows that the planets are obviously under the heel of the Alliance, as compared to the comparatively laissez-faire Tau Ceti and the loosely held together CoC.

accepted Wezzy's Command Re-Application
wowzewow replied to wowzewow's topic in Whitelist Applications Archives
Frankly, I didn't really know what much I could do in that round. I was basically sitting on my hands for the most of it. I was constantly trying to ring alarm bells trying to "raise" the heat and escalate the situation so Security can actually play the game - unfortunately, I can't really ask Sec to go guns blazing since it was up to the HoS' jurisdiction. So I was just stuck with saying "The Idris Reclamators are doing REALLY FUCKED UP SHIT we need to do SOMETHING", and "I'm in charge of the ship's finances, this isn't adding up". It wasn't until the Assistant flat out had to succumb and die that I could go "HOLY SHIT THEY KILLED A MAN ESCALATE NOW!!!" Basically, I was stuck between a rock and a hard place, because I don't think there was really much I could do during that round. the HoS was already talking to the Reclamators, and the Captain was *just* coming back from ferrying people on the shuttle. I didn't particularly want to muscle in on anything to avoid overstepping my bounds as a XO. -
Well. Can't we just increase every *OTHER* job other than Medical and Security?

I definitely think we shouldn't be kneecapping ourselves to a hard limit. I think we should definitely rethink how we handle our playercount. The fact our server just starts falling apart once we're out of this "goldilocks zone" of 20-50 players is not particularly healthy for growth.
