1. This is an interesting idea, though I lean on the side of players being responsible for their motivations, rather then being fed an objective by the game. Playing to satisfy an objective system encourages playing to win, which we are supposed to discourage here. Also: Players who voluntarily flag for Traitor should be prepared to play their character in ways that are not consistent with their canon character's behavior in order to be a satisfying antag. It's the same way people can learn to enjoy Cult or Rev, except in this case the choice is almost 100% theirs as to when to play it. Breaking character is sort of the point of being a traitor and some other antag types as well. You are (or become) something that others do not expect you to be, and you use that to your advantage to antagonize the crew. If this did get implemented, I'd also like it to remain an option or possibility for a known character to roll Traitor, as the impact of a known personality betraying co-workers/friends can be greater than that of Johnny or Janey Come-Lately. Maybe an additional flag in Character Setup, giving a player the option to be a somebody or a nobody? Edit: I read your OP again and see that you've already accounted for this last bit. Sorry!
2. I think it's daring and a little subversive of recent trends to create a character whose goal is the true emulation of organic empathy and emotion - there's been pushback against concepts that tread that line over the last year that can discourage many good players from trying. However, to me that line is at the core of what makes IPCs interesting as sci-fantasy characters and as futuristic AI, so I am supportive of anyone who wants to make a good attempt at it. It makes the execution of this character's roleplay particularly important if accepted. I enjoy that opposed to shell frames - facsimiles of organic species that often fall short of the mark as beings - Cinder is outwardly a robot with an inward mastery of what those shells try to imitate. Having to manage the way that core structure dictates its behavior on board, while simultaneously informing it via interaction with humans, is something that I personally would enjoy to play, and one that reminds me of my own IPC app from yesteryear. Maybe most importantly, this is a character who reminds me of why I found the whitelist in 2015 fun. As for Vile, I've only typically had positive or productive interactions with her, in game and out. Though I don't often see her roleplay firsthand, What I've read of her writing here and elsewhere makes me confident she'd treat the character, the whitelist and related material with care. Something Vile, how would you respond to someone critiquing this application by saying you're attempting to whitelist a literal "metal human?" The character's core quality seems to be its pursuit and achievement of things that some of the community might identify as unique to human or organic life. Is there something characteristically synthetic about Cinder's drive toward developing truly organic capacities? Do you feel that needing such a synthetic quality is important to the character, or the lore that props it up?
3. If we collectively want this to stop, we could probably do with mentioning it to the player printing a trillion pizzas, rather than altering the machine so that that one player can't do that one thing. The player is just likely to find another method to assert themselves on the round that others may find just as annoying. It's ahelpable if you believe that someone is making an OOC meme of things, and modmins ask players to do this when they see it so that they can enforce the rules. I think that changing the game's devices mechanically to try and alter behavior isn't the best approach; the machine is not the problem, it's just one way the problem manifests itself.
4. MAKE is a favorite of mine. It isn't afraid to make an effort to be more memorable than some of the more sterile synthetics that seem to have been encouraged over the last year, while still maintaining a decently synthetic demeanor. It manages to be funny, relate-able and thoughtful without throwing the issues surrounding synthetic life in people's faces or forcing people to nitpick the lore that allows/disallows such behavior. And it's also generally helpful! I know KELT and CAKE less, but they are never crew that I don't want to see. I even made TAKE to kind of play along with the theme There's one thing I hate, though. There's one thing I cannot abide by. Why is there no fourth period in their names??? M.A.K.E needs a stop after the E! Otherwise, it's "Multipurpose Assistant of Kalentine E!"
5. While the explicit instruction not to handcuff compliant detainees isn't spelled out on the regs page (since it's a list of crimes, more than it is a security guide), the Corporate Regulations page does indicate under i202 Resisting Arrest that the refusal of handcuffs (implying a detainee can do this) does not qualify as resisting arrest. Handcuffs are also considered a 'use of force,' and in i116 Excessive Use of Force in Detainment, it is mentioned that using force 'against a compliant suspect' is an example of that violation. Also, in the Guide to Security for our server, under arrest procedure, attempting to handcuff is first mentioned only after a subject refuses to surrender peacefully.
6. I don't like them mainly for the rate of fire and range. They also are supposedly implemented for area-denial, for which cult already has an un-counterable, invisible wall that does the same thing (except those do not try to burn down poor suckers who wander within a screen and a half of one). Given that their intended purpose has a redundancy, and that cult already has several strong tools (blood boil, stuns, EMPs, constructs, etc.) I would be in favor of either heavily modifying pylons, or removing them.
7. A fond thank you to all players and staff who have brought us to this point. I'm looking forward to good times, and I'm glad I get to see this happen.
8. Ckey/BYOND Username: Synnono Position Being Applied For: Wiki Maintainer Past Experiences/Knowledge: I do some wiki editing for my work's internal process wiki, in a web-based editor with HTML elements. I also spend too much time on our spess wiki, and have contributed a small amount of lore content to it. Additionally, I possess a fiery rage that can only be quelled by correcting typos, grammatical errors and sentence structure on the regular. It's a curse. Examples of Past Work: I'm not sure how to show this in terms of wiki editing - you may have to take my word for it! Lore content mentioned above was edited before being posted to the wiki itself, so I'm not sure I'd call it entirely mine as it exists there. Preferred Mode of Communication: Discord DMs @Synnono#2558 Additional Comments: The wiki always needs some love. I think it can be made much better without a ton of extra effort, and have the tools to help with that. Thanks for considering me!
9. For what it's worth, I don't think that IJ is asking you to erase your character or his experiences. He seems to simply be asking you to name your detective something other than the name of this other detective. Any IC confusion with people you regularly interact with could be cleared up in a moment of LOOC explanation, and then everyone can carry on with their shift. Retcons happen all the time. This one just happens to be rule-enforced, even if it came later than you anticipated.
10. SHODAN has a good idea of (what I feel) the point of Command staff is from an OOC standpoint, and when playing they tend to help drive the round regardless of what position they're playing in. While Sophie Rifler has caused some issues in the past, the player is committed to improving her, and handles criticism very well as I noticed in this thread. Overall, I think they would make a good player to whitelist for these reasons. Not actually knowing the letter of all protocol is not as important as creating an engaging story in a round, and this player is usually trying to drive that somehow. One question for the applicant: Sophie's shown rebellious tendencies toward Command, protocol, and the company in the past. Do you imagine that playing her with a loyalty implant would significantly affect her personality? If so, how?
11. Sounds like a great use for the library. Replace Librarian with Curator when?
12. I'm for it, so long as I can cryo without asphyxiating. The surface level vents every forty minutes as a law of nature. Edit: Additional thought - with cryo and potentially the holodeck moving to the main level, what reason is there for anyone to visit the surface level in all of its vented glory, besides primary tool storage?
13. I'm not involved in the interaction between the two players, but I do want to point out real quick that there is a notice which indicates that a 'transformative xenobiological experiment' (e.g., turning someone into a slime or slimeperson) is effectively murder/suicide, and it has generally not been allowed IC in the past. It results in the legal death of the person being transformed and is therefore not something most non-antags do. Another player asked for clarification on this notice in this thread where Jackboot confirmed that interpretation of the language.
14. You might want to ask yourself that question one more time and see if you can come up with an answer to it. "Ask yourself that" is not a proper response to a question which genuinely intends to attain information, especially when the answer is not straightforward. CG - Agreed. UM - I did do this, after you asked, and I can't come up with one. Keep in mind that you are suggesting NanoTrasen's regulations be changed to be explicitly permissive of this, which is the context that I asked that question in. In that context, I cannot think of a good reason why the company would want to allow that, or why its employees need it spelled out in the reg book. As of right now, there doesn't seem to be a reg that even states you have to wear one at all. It's just common sense that you should. To revise/summarize from my last post: 1. Why would NanoTrasen want to allow this behavior at work explicitly in their regulations? What is the benefit to them? 2. What is the benefit to mechanics or gameplay, in your opinion? 3. What is your thought process behind wanting to make the change? (This is mostly what I wanted to know with the other post) 4. Which regulation is being changed (or is one being added?), and is it necessary to even change/add at all in order to behave like this?
15. What? I'm not sure I understand your sentence, but I believe it's suggesting that wearing an ID card visibly during code green should be optional, and only mandatory during code blue and higher. If this is the case, I disagree. Workplaces with security of any kind often make it mandatory to prominently display identification, and many encourage their employees to challenge people who aren't doing that. In respect to NanoTrasen spess stations specifically, a ton of the machinery and electronics are meant to react to an ID card as well. Why would people want to not wear them at work? Aside from potentially getting yourself confused with a wizard for the lols, what are the mechanical benefits of your suggestion? (Aside from all this, regulations specific to IDs don't appear to be covered under the wiki regs, but I would sure as heck include it in i106 Suspicious Conduct if I saw someone aboard a secure station with no ID card.)
16. This paragraph makes me feel like Alissa would have realistically grown up with strong pro-Republic sentiment, both inside and outside her family. What influences or experiences in her life on Adhomai made those things feel stifling? Does she care at all about the cause of her country (and parents) or the outcome of the war? While it makes sense for a character to want to flee from a conflict, she seems to effectively be leaving the people and family she loves (according to your app at least) to do 'something for herself' that isn't really defined by your backstory. Why was it so appealing to steal from her family and leave everything she's ever known behind, and does whatever that is help define how she'll be played on the station for you? What I would want to avoid in your position is making an applicant character who consciously ignores one of the main themes of Tajaran lore today. While it isn't necessary to spoil an entire backstory in an application, it is important to indicate how the species' central conflicts have helped create the character you're applying with. As it stands, this sounds like a coming of age story with no defined motivation (yet), and could be just as easily applied to a human leaving home because they just don't like being home. On the player, I don't have any concerns - you're a longtime favorite of mine on Phoebe and you definitely put some extra thought into the humans I see you play.
