SleepyWolf Posted September 10, 2019 Posted September 10, 2019 (edited) Ckey/BYOND Username: Sleepy Wolf Position Being Applied For: Diona Loredev Past Experiences/Knowledge: Unathi Lore Deputy, Dionaea Loredev, Skrell Lore Deputy, Skrell Lore Dev, Vaurca enthusiast, lots of helping with articles, lots of drawing and other fun stuff Examples of Past Work: EghHg see above, stuff like the giant Skrell rework, making articles and helping with plot-points, drawing for articles and sometimes the wiki. I REALLY want to add more flavour to the different clusters of lore. What I want to do is work with different loredevs to see what they'd want from specific clusters. I want to increase the amount of clusters so that any player can create a gestalt of their own, with any personality they want, and have it be okay. Passivity and 'simply observing' is no longer acceptable in my eyes - a lack of action or drive leads to stagnation as we see now. No change will come from dionaea simply being 'observers', no roleplay comes from waiting around. One other thing I also want to add is the ability for people to be Cyclopses as Cluster Consulars and priests, the giant buff Cyclops being just a re-modeled dionaea with the ability to grow floors and walls from itself at a fast rate, as well as with less biomass lost to themselves. SleepyWolf Posted September 11, 2019 Author Posted September 11, 2019 Another idea I have wanted to do for a long time is add variation to dionaea bodies - this is one, very fun example of one from the Xrim Cluster I want to make. Their giant eyes are used to watch their subjects, their pets, and now with the new citizenship character setup mechanics I believe it can be implemented easily if I just supply the sprites.
Snakebittenn Posted September 11, 2019 Posted September 11, 2019 Sleepy has my support, as she did wonderful acts of necromancy when it came to Skrell. However. Sleepy, What do you think are the largest issues with modern lore, and what's your gameplan to fix this? Just so we can have all your thoughts in one place.

My main issue with modern lore is the passivity of them, the way they simply observe and sometimes do their own thing but it's never extremely interesting or actually capable of being used in game. I want to make lore that can be used in game by players, and maybe even played with to make their own unique spins on things.
Snakebittenn Posted September 11, 2019 Posted September 11, 2019 Satisfactory answer, thank you very much. Are you any interested in changes to their biology? Expanding on their origins?

I'm thinking of rewording the names of the different forms to something more thematic to what I would change the Dionaea to - I'd keep Nymph, change Cyclops to Gestalt, make the Argus named Cyclops since they have one giant eye... I'm debating changing the biology for physique and organs to be dumbed down to something simple, with just a small cluster to explain each organ if it's even required for some of them. On origins, that'll be left a mystery.
Snakebittenn Posted September 11, 2019 Posted September 11, 2019 Great! Thank you, that's it for now.
Scheveningen Posted September 11, 2019 Posted September 11, 2019 What do you plan on doing to make diona feel and behave in a way that is more active and relevant?

I don't plan on doing articles, but I do plan on making them actively seek to do things on station. An example would be - For the Royal Garden of Dominia cluster I want them to actively seek stories and gifts to bring back for Boleslaw and other Dominian royalty, while currently there is no enticement for you to do things as the current clusters.
VTCobaltblood Posted September 11, 2019 Posted September 11, 2019 Excellent loredev with fresh ideas, whom I very much enjoyed working with during my skrell deputy tenure. I can only hope that Sleepy is still able to conduct the forbidden ritual that brings races back from the dead. +1
Coalf Posted September 11, 2019 Posted September 11, 2019 Sleepy is a very exciting person to work with, they're capable of taking very barebones ideas and ping-ponging them around with others until they take a full shape which everyone is satisfied with. While I've worked minimally with sleepy on the official lore team, I've talked to sleepy in private multiple times and can attest that they're a very good person when it comes to understanding themes and establishing story structures/overarching ideas. However, if I remember correctly, Sleepy has a bit of a habit of jumping into lore and jumping out every so often. So I'd like to ask, can we expect that here or is this a more mainstay application? Second, suppose that right now some mysterious skeleton appears and says that all of your mechanical proposals are outright denied right here and now due to Spoiler bloat gnome would you continue with your application or would that be a deal breaker?

The last thing dionae need is a dev who will go dark after two months. Can you promise you'll stick around this time, or will this be a repeat?

So I'd like to ask, can we expect that here or is this a more mainstay application? The reason I'm applying right now is because I'm dissatisfied in current dionaea lore, and I want to throw my ideas into the ring to bring this allowance for creativity for myself and people in the future. Jumping in, throwing fuel on the fire, then jumping out isn't necessarily a bad thing - it sounds bad, but an increase in quality is still an increase in quality. I can't answer if I'll stay in the position or not, I can't say if I'll enjoy my ideas of dionaea for the first two months. But I will stay until I'm satisfied with my work, and satisfied with the places lore will go. This may be selfish, but I want to be able to enjoy dionaea and see others playing with lore in the same ways I do, from the canvas I put the base coat of paint on. 5 hours ago, Coalf said: Second, suppose that right now some mysterious skeleton appears and says that all of your mechanical proposals are outright denied right here and now due to Reveal hidden contents bloat gnome would you continue with your application or would that be a deal breaker? I came here completely understanding that everything I bring won't be added. I'm throwing darts at a wall and seeing which ones stick best. I hope to get a few, small things in and maybe even remove a few of them if I'm convinced well enough - but I do want to discuss ideas and find out what would be easily implemented. One good example of this is, I've already thought out one of the mechanics I want added to instead just be made into something simple. A dionaea building a dionaea wall with an ability can be replaced with a more simple thing - use a nymph on a wall to make that a diona wall. This is something that, from what I understand, would be easy to code and hopefully used. this paragraph is a little Strange because i rushed it out but i hope that answers. TL;DR for that one: I'm okay with code being refused, but will debate the argument of bloat until it gets obtrusive to talk about.
SleepyWolf Posted September 11, 2019 Author Posted September 11, 2019 One reason I wanted to apply for loredev instead of doing a lore canonization app is that I want to keep the thematic cohesion between every single piece of lore added or modified. I don't want to have the things I add feel like the only things that stick out, like a sheep painted red in a crowd. I want to paint the whole herd red, maybe even just show people they can paint their personal sheep whatever colour they want. yesssss
Mofo1995 Posted September 16, 2019 Posted September 16, 2019 I'm going to have to decline this application. The reasoning goes like this. While I think you have a lot of great suggestions for the mechanics of dionaea, I disagree with the proposed lore changes. While dionaea being less passive would be a good change, I don't like the idea of dionaea being scatterblasted to originate from all sorts of political entities in the lore. Essentially, I feel like it would put their hand into too many cookie jars. The vaurcae are already just sorta everywhere, and I feel like this is a bit heavy handed to sort of interject diona into all these different areas of lore as well. There's also the fact that this would be a pretty big retcon to go back and suddenly add this. The direction I'd rather take is to emphasize and expand upon their relationship with skrell and position in skrell society, though I do like the idea of independent diona from independent clusters being a thing. But another big issue I have how short your tenures tend to be. I'm looking for a more long term commitment, someone who is really gonna stick with it and likely not only be on the server this time next year, but still the dev. Most of my tenure so far has been spent on staffing, and I don't like the prospect of having to come back to the applications board in a couple months time to have it all out again. Ultimately, I have faith you could revitalize dionaea lore and draw up player interests. If I didn't have faith that others could do so, I would certainly accept the application and curate as necessary to buy myself more time until a more permanent candidate could crop up, but at this moment I would rather cut out what would probably end up an interregnum. Thank you for your interest, and don't let it discourage you from applying in the future!
Mofo1995 Posted September 16, 2019 Posted September 16, 2019 Re-opened at applications request to be considered for Dionaea lore deputy.
SleepyWolf Posted September 16, 2019 Author Posted September 16, 2019 I DIDN'T EVEN KNOW THIS WAS A POSSIBILITY BUT IT MAKES TOO MUCH SENSE
FreshRefreshments Posted September 19, 2019 Posted September 19, 2019 The main issue I had with Sleepy's position as Dev, and what other people have stated, is yes, she changes and loses interest in things. And right now, that interest is in Dionae. Deputy allows her to get the things she wants in, which I like so far, in- and this even includes sprites, customization, a whole nine yards. I think Sleepy would make a great addition to the Dionae team, for as long as she wants to be part of it. She's entirely right- the passiveness of Dionae is their problem. I think slotting in as a Deputy would be perfect for what she wants to do, and quells concerns about sticking around.
Yonnimer Posted September 19, 2019 Posted September 19, 2019 (edited) I do like the app and the ideas suggested. There's not much I can say that hasn't been said. Although I do have a question I wish to ask. Do you have any concerns with a possible difference in opinions or ideas with the rest of the Dionaea team? or the full lore team? Edited September 19, 2019 by Yonnimer meant to add this in, didn't.
SleepyWolf Posted September 20, 2019 Author Posted September 20, 2019 (edited) I don't really feel a difference of opinions is a bad thing, in fact I feel it's a good thing and can encourage a more in-depth discussion on a species (If Done Respectfully). More ideas for all of us to choose from on what we enjoy, or don't enjoy, is really cool and fun, and this goes for both the full lore team and species specific teams. @Yonnimer Edited September 20, 2019 by SleepyWolf added (If Done Respectfully)
Yonnimer Posted September 25, 2019 Posted September 25, 2019 Sorry for the delay on this. Your app has been accepted. Welcome to the team!
