[Accepted] kyres1's IPC application
CakeIsOssim replied to kyres1's topic in Whitelist Applications Archives
Application accepted. -
21.2.2460 Aristalus Negotiates Loosening of NanoTrasen Synthetic Employee Restrictions In mid-September of last year, an IPC known as Aristalus was elected into the office of the Secretary of Synthetic Relations, a position in the Republic's presidential cabinet. This is the first time in recorded history that a synthetic has held any sort of government office of any state or organization. Aristalus was selected by president Dorn specifically due to their past relationship and Dorn's acquaintance with one of Aristalus's closest friends. Since mid-October of last year, Aristalus has been working closely with representatives and board members of the NanoTrasen corporation in an attempt to open better employment and business opportunities for synthetics of all types. "NanoTrasen's regulations regarding employment for synthetics were obstructive and cornering, forcing androids to adopt their brand chassis for retail price straight out of the android's pay. Some of their command-level roles were also barred from synthetics unless they met these requirements," Aristalus said in a private interview. "I spoke with their representatives, their board members, and their internal affairs agents, and frankly I was appalled. They had an alarming number of potential candidates for these command roles, but because of the nature of the agreements they required the IPCs to make, they weren't being filled. What good is potential wasted?" "They were not open to the idea at first, hesitant to change their policies for the sake of revenue and cost. I worked with them, suggested ways to reduce these costs and impacts on their biological employees. After a handful of months, here we are. NanoTrasen has happily opened up more opportunities for their synthetic employees. Some of the major openings were security chiefs and personnel directors aboard their orbital facilities. Some mining facilities are opening up foreman positions to IPCs, as well." When asked about the mistrust of synthetics in the workplace, Aristalus responded with, "Yes, it is a shame that our creators cannot see us as equal to them... there will forever be mistrust, I think. There is still mistrust even between two individual humans. It can't ever really go away, but the trick is to prove slowly over time that synthetics are not the enemy. All they need allowed to them is time and a little bit of hope. These two concepts seem to have a tremendous impact on the outlook of human civilizations all throughout the past." Aristalus intends to "keep up the good fight" by increasing the equal opportunities for synthetics all over Tau Ceti, and even other stars. "This one star system, this Tau Ceti... it has been the focal point of many, many awe-inspiring events - some great, some terrible. It would seem that all eyes are on us. I should, and we should, be making our best effort to make a good impression." NanoTrasen released a statement along with the completion of the negotiations; "NanoTrasen is an equal opportunity employer, and we recognize that synthetics make up a wide array of the specialization in our big family. Synthetics were already previously allowed to assume responsibility for many other critical roles in our installations. Now, we have widened those roles. Qualified IPCs can now take up head of security or personnel positions on any required facility, as well as other opportunities elsewhere." The negotiations did not completely redact the policies, however. Due to the wide variety of chassis types employed by NanoTrasen, certain restrictions had to be placed on time-critical positions, such as their security chiefs. Heavy-style chassis, like Hephaestus Industries' newest Generation 2 industrial body are disallowed from taking the position, as well as the stylish (but fragile) Bishop Cybernetics Accessory frame.

[Denied]How does a Positronic Brain Work?
CakeIsOssim replied to Muncorn's topic in Lore Canonization Applications Archive
Kyres and I have discussed this a bit, and we've broken it down to three major criticisms. Here they are: 1. Accurately describes the processing power and function of a positronic brain. This is something we actually want to avoid doing. A marginal amount of people who play or play around synthetics are going to be either computer scientists or theoretical physicists, so we can allow ourselves some creative freedom here. This freedom, when expressed correctly, allows people to come up with their own explanations for filling the gaps. Not really 'gaps' per se, but something that is more meaningful to a reader or player other than the exact scientific function of the brain. It can be reduced to a few simple concepts, I'm sure. I can see you have already realized the importance of not alienating people. That's good, but there's another goal; how much of this will be relevant in-game? How often will any of it actually be brought up in roleplay? If I may be blunt, how much of this will people give a damn about, other than that marginal percentage? 2. "Has anyone actually seen your degree, Doctor Freeman?" "The brain instead consists of channels that electrons are fired down in certain orders much in the same way electricity would be sent through wires, but instead of simply sending information like a traditional wire would, these relays of electron transfers work in the same way as the neurons in our brains do." You got half of what I covered in number one here. Half scientific technobabble, half reality-based science. I'd like to lean more towards "technobabble," but with less babble. Let me clarify here that there is nothing really wrong with describing the function of a positronic brain. The trick is to just not reduce it to an exact science. There's another thing that ties into this one but I'll cover that in number three. 3. The specifications of a positronic brain are not really necessary. Just about every megacorporation builds or owns synthetics. They all have varying models, different makeups, and whatever else. Positronic brains aren't really that different, so we'd like to ebb away from over-specifying parts of the brain. While I personally originally liked the diagram and outlining of the different parts, I'm now against it for the sake of brevity. Brevity is the soul of wit, and this is what I was alluding to at the end of number two. It's also somewhat trivial. While I do really appreciate your effort, I do not think it's likely for this to be accepted in the current form that it takes. We want to open discussion about this, however. What are your thoughts on these criticisms? -
[Accepted] kyres1 Synthetic Lore Deputy App
CakeIsOssim replied to kyres1's topic in Developer Applications Archives
I have spoken with you about lore and things on multiple occasions. You strike me as very passionate about the quality and content of lore, synthetics included. I have some questions here, just to garner some more information about a few specific things. What is trivial lore (or even, trivial information) to you? I'm not asking you to criticize the lore here for an answer (I mean, unless you really want to), just provide a made up example. Will you be able to function and work with a team? While lore writers have their own sort of little areas to work on, developments involving others writers are very common. You should have an ability to share work and provide criticism from an objective point of view on others' works. 3D modelling is great, but how well can you use these programs to provide 2D illustrations? As I brought up in another application, I am in need of flair. Would you still be interested and invested in developing lore for synthetics if the direction they were being taken in did not fully align to your wishes? To clarify, I don't mean completely different. That depends on your opinion of the direction the lore should be taken in. 'Fully' can mean any sort of disagreement. Would you be able to log into the server for at least 2 hours at a planned point in time? This is in case I need the deputy to assist in an event. Events requiring assistance like this probably won't ever be spur-of-the-moment, and will have set dates. -

[Declined] nursie's (synth) lore deputy app
CakeIsOssim replied to witchbells's topic in Developer Applications Archives
Uh, I need clarification on this. Are we talking about like, hardcore image editing, or just finding images suitable for a cause? (I do have a small amount of images I've edited, if you'd like to see) Just hunting down images on Google images, for many reasons. References and news articles mainly, but also some inspiration. Edited images are also just as good, if not better. -

I have worked with you on some concepts on multiple occasions indeed. All of them were positive or had positive outcomes for me. Let's get the questionnaire out of the way! What is trivial lore (or even, trivial information) to you? I'm not asking you to criticize the lore here for an answer (I mean, unless you really want to), just provide a made up example. When writing a section where the final product is intended to be uploaded to the wiki, would you be able to keep that section of information clear, concise, and free of clutter? You're resourceful in graphic design, but are you resourceful in Google images design also? Seriously. I desperately need some flair in some places. Would you be able to log into the server for at least 2 hours at a planned point in time? This is in case I need the deputy to assist in an event. Events requiring assistance like this probably won't ever be spur-of-the-moment, and will have set dates. Just to bring to light again that I'm looking for a partner and not a secretary. Should you make the team, you will be required to be both creative and logical, realistic and fantastical. -

Hello, [mention]Arkter[/mention] I understand your application was quite delayed. However, I cannot delay it any longer now that I am waiting for another response. Please try to address my previous criticisms in the next few days. -

Yes, yes they do. I apologize, I had forgotten that segment of your application when typing up my response. Your application is accepted. -
So you seem like you'd work pretty well on a team. That's great! Good trait to have. I must agree with Loow here, however, that you're being pretty cautious. Don't be afraid to voice and express your true opinions and bring it up with whoever in the meantime to make sure you're not overstepping bounds. It's not a very common issue, I don't think. I also like your style, and your interest in future developments. If I gave you a few directed areas to work on with free reign and a little bit of guidance, do you think you could do it? Help you generate ideas, give you an idea of flow, that sort of thing. I have some more questions for you that you haven't already answered, too. What is trivial lore (or even, trivial information) to you? I'm not asking you to criticize the lore here for an answer (I mean, unless you really want to), just provide a made up example. Would you be satisfied in changing some of your work if it received a large amount of negative feedback from the community, and not another species maintainer/deputy? Would you be able to log into the server for at least 2 hours at a planned point in time? This is in case I need the deputy to assist in an event. Events requiring assistance like this probably won't ever be spur-of-the-moment, and will have set dates. Lastly, I would just like to bring light to the fact that I'm not looking for an underling, I'm looking for a partner. Not in love or marriage, unfortunately, but in fabrication and expression of ideas and information. Useful information that people enjoy and are willing to take time out of their day to ingest.

While I do wish the backstory were not so black and white, I will pass you this time, but with some questions. To what degree is S.A.M.'s dislike towards organics? How was it mistreated other than being talked rudely to? How exactly did it get reassigned to the Aurora, which is a completely different company's space station? -

Your backstory, while imaginative, is simply lacking in a few key elements I'm afraid. (also, that must be a very wealthy hobbyist, shells are expensive) I must ask that you give the backstory another attempt, perhaps flesh it out a bit, and make it less comical. Being a synthetic is not exactly all about sunshine and daisies. -

In a previous question, you stated that synthetics see their surroundings with logic and calculations, not emotions. Then, you present a character that seems to function mainly on social and emotional cues. Will the character still have that robotic aspect to them? -

So, I can see you are struggling here, and that's okay. Unfortunately, I still have to deny your application, but it's mainly so you can get another attempt at a clean slate. I'll present to you a few things you can do better. You can also PM me on discord for help any time. First, and I see this a lot, "Identify what makes role-playing this species different than role-playing a Human." I'm not looking for mechanical/gameplay differences here. I already know that IPCs don't need to breathe, need to be repaired, et cetera. Identify what makes roleplaying this species different from a human. Be creative! Then, I see your application's backstory has gone through many revisions. The first one was valid-oriented, it seems. This one that you have now is sadly very bare bones. I understand it was an attempt to avoid the "machines are violent" nature, but a little more information than that would be wonderful. Flesh out your character a little more, give me a taste of them before coming out with the main course. I highly encourage you to apply again as soon as you feel like you are ready. -

Hello, sorry about the delays. I intend to read this in-depth when I get home tonight. -
Alright, after a giant bout of inactivity, I'm going to actually try to keep to a sane schedule and bide my time accordingly. Thus, to help me organize, I'll now be separating my work into phases (and totally not because it's edgy and cool-sounding). I'll always add my phases to each diary update, as well as which part of the phase is complete, and which phase I am currently in. New things may be added to each phase over time, depending on circumstance. I'm currently in Phase One. More details on each little bullet point to come over time. Phase One: Finish the General Synthetics page, which contains all three cyborg subtypes as well as general artificial intelligence. Separate general synthetics from the IPC page, as IPCs will now have their own page akin to all other whitelist species. Finish the Positronic Brain page. Probably do this first. It is extremely relevant and also important. Think of some more notable synthetics. They don't have to be implemented during this stage, but brainstorm some ideas and hopefully come up with something cool and noteworthy. Practice some better whitelist quality control. Phase Two: Now, you can focus on mechanical changes. New IPC types, balancing, and aesthetics possibly to come during this stage (and even before it). Think of some interesting new concepts! The page on the Technological Singularity seemed to be well-received, with what little attention it got. Brainstorm! Some history! Where are some notable places in time, or physical places, where synthetics have been used? Expand the synthetic colony, EC-2718. I'm thinking somewhere more questionable in the in-universe sense, but we'll see. Phase Three: The synthetics no one likes to think exist (no, not the sex bots). All organic denominators subsumed. Nah, but think of more things to include in the third phase. Phase one should be done within a few weeks, at least. I don't want my entire job to be wikineering, so in between all of this, I will also try to host some events and story arcs - some minor and some major. Get hyped, for there's much to come.

Hello. I apologize for the delays on your application. Unfortunately, I have decided to fail your application for a few reasons. The first being that I do not believe you have spent enough time on the server for me to be convinced that you are in a comfortable (but still new) place in the server's universe and theme (first seen date 2017-12-18, last seen 2017-12-29 - less than two weeks as of this reply). Another reason being that you do not really seem invested in your wanting to obtain a new playable species. "I'm tired of playing [x] species, time for something new!" Please show me that you actually want it. You also seem to be hung on mechanical changes/differences, and advantages, between IPCs and biological species. Focus on the role-play differences. I already know that IPCs have all of these fancy immunities and mechanics. What about its behavior? How is it role-playing differently from a human? Lastly, your character's backstory strikes me as forced, and while it is interesting as a concept, perhaps it's the way it's portrayed. I encourage you to play a while longer on the server and gain a better feel for things, and afterwards, I would be delighted if you submitted another application with the criticism I have given you here in mind. -

Out of curiosity, how often do you actually log in to the server and play a round, or even a part of one? I do not think I have seen you around too often lately.
