The idea would be to set them up how roboticist is now. There is no restriction on what you could do mechanically. It just implies that if there was one SAR and one paramedic, they would both have their own preferred fields is the idea. That and having someone just say by picking a title that they understand EVA would be a blessing ?
-
Edited in the psych roles bit, thought that was in there but I blanked. As for EMT/Paramedic, I think it might be worthwhile to keep both roles and perhaps refluff them: one focuses on EVA/outside the station rescue (like being called Search and Rescue), and the other focuses on on-site response (could be called Paramedic still). This may not seem like a big thing, but having someone who’s capable of getting EVA setup and ready to go in a timely manner is huge and big distinction that remains important rather often.

I guess to summarize a bit of the points going on in this thread as a TLDR because holy fuck there is a lot to comb through at the moment: Pros of Renaming and Fusing Medical Jobs: - Definitions of roles can be whatever we want for game design, and roles are malleable based on balancing the game. - IRL comparison arguments won't be grounded/they aren't valid if these roles become fictionally based. - There would be no more alt titles that nearly do the same thing mechanically (note, roleplay wise they are different roles, but people do not seem too keen on alt roles if the mechanics are the same). - The "hidden complexity" (IE the surgery chart and similar role defines) can be diminished or removed. Cons of Renaming and Fusing Medical Jobs: - Changing and fusing jobs would alienate many medical players. - The hidden complexity of the department is an appeal for some/it's much more complex than other servers. (I'll update these points if people DM me, please don't bloat this thread by posting a two sentence reply about adding pros/cons.) To chime in on the non-department mains/non-players commentary, that argument is rather slippery slope; big changes to departments usually draw ire from a lot of their players. I'd probably point to dep sec as an example if I had to. In general, I'm really disliking the "accusing non-med mains of changing the department because they don't understand the role nuance" argument especially when people that play medical have shown a willingness to cooperate with the changes too. Moving on to the thread feedback, perhaps the following things can be agreed upon regarding fusing medical roles: - Nurse/Medical Intern/Medical Resident can be combined into one learning role. I understand that each one has its own meaning behind it and what it signifies, but having one homogeneous job for the learner and RP roles wouldn't be too bad. It would be in the same boat as Lab Assistant for science, where I've seen people actually use the role to learn, and some people use the role to be just a literal lab assistant, rather than focus on trying to elevate to the next role. This removes unnecessary variance and streamlines three ideas that can summarily be combined as one. - Trauma Physician and Physician get removed or replaced by/merged into one role, or they all have the same job expectation across the board and the titles just show a roleplay preference. Probably the latter here, but I doubt devs would encourage alt roles where there are no mechanical variance. - Combine psychiatrist and psychologist into the same role. Mechanically the same and the difference in the future could simply be pedantic. As for renames, I think Sherman's on the right track for the most part, maybe giving some futuristic suffixes or prefixes too as to further them from IRL equivalents. Haydizzle out. ??

This thread is looking really good. I enjoy how these look!

I think my commentary here might sound like detracting or being counter productive, but I promise that isn't the intent. I don't play engineering too often, but I feel there's always something to do if you aren't looking to go out of your way and RP. Engineering is in the cool spot of being able to build a lot of stuff around the station, or, with permission of a department, even entirely remodel what it looks like. There's also various spots in maintenance that make for fun usings, such as the theater by the bar for one. If you're looking for stuff to do, there are a lot of neat things you can do in that regard. When it comes to actually adding things or changing stuff up, I don't think it would be too necessary to add different ways for the SM engine to work, largely because there are other power generators available to people too. Tesla, solars, stuff of that sort to get you going. That said, I do agree that more antag ways to fuck with engines without them blowing up would be a cool addition to the game. For more actual suggestions and additions, perhaps an expansion on what can be constructed? Unsure how easy or possible that is, or what is entirely in the code already for this.

BYOND key: Haydizzle Character names: Porter de-Abaros, Morgan Andalhand, Buhersiz As'zalth, Kar'skalzi Bollu, S'uzda Dhosu, MYRIAD, Aerkor Hri'zok How long have you been playing on Aurora?: About eight months, with varying levels of activity. Why do you wish to be on the whitelist?: My biggest appeal to play command is for the roleplay aspect of it as well as being a paperwork pusher. Why did you come to Aurora?: I never played SS13 before, but I got roped into it due to my heavy background in various roleplay groups and knowing a bunch of people on Aurora. Have you read the Aurora wiki on the head roles and qualifications you plan on playing?: Yes I have! Have you received any administrative actions? And how serious were they?: To my knowledge I have not. Please provide well articulated answers to the following questions in a paragraph each. Give a definition of what you think roleplay is, and should be about: Roleplay is telling a story at its core. Whether you are the storyteller of sorts by driving the narrative (like an antag, or perhaps someone just hosting some kind of zany event for others to enjoy) or someone engaging with other people attempting to start a narrative, roleplay is a medium of collaborative storytelling. In its various forms it varies from place to place, but for this server, it is intended to be a more fast paced storytelling platform for smaller stories I feel, which heavily differentiates itself from things like D&D, RPG video games, or forum RP, which all vary in pacing and longevity. What do you think the OOC purpose of a Head of Staff is, in game?: I believe heads of staff are meant to not only organize departments and help keep people involved, but also make decisions that meaningfully drive the story of a given round. Of course this can be as simple as raising the alert level and making periodic announcements about dangerous activity on station, but it can also include more complex or self-initiated things to give people something to do, like leading a research expedition, hosting a small party for moral, or even checking up on departments to roleplay with characters more person-ably. While I personally do not expect any given head of staff to know everything about their department like some kind of walking encyclopedia, I do think it is reasonable that heads of staff also show exemplary standards of roleplay. What do you think the OOC responsibilities of whitelisted players are to other players, and how would you strive to uphold them?: This question I find rather interesting due to how it is for whitelisted players in general and not specifically to command. In general, I believe that a whitelist shows responsibility in knowing the lore and being able to generate roleplay or "hooks" with the character. Being able to turn a boring shift into a memorable one for some, or being able to just walk into an otherwise stifled room and make things interesting. From experience this is something I try to do already when I play a given character by having them be outgoing and conversant with complete strangers. Could you give us the gist of what is currently happening in Tau Ceti and how it affected your character and their career?: Mmmmm well to give one example, one of my characters as a paramedic has been picking up shifts in Mendel during the periods of riots and unrest. (It was a good reason for absence of character for a month or two as well.) However in general during the phoron shortages, my characters that would not normally be interested in being command due to being "content" with where they are at are starting to reconsider if they would want to pursue higher paying jobs in the future. It was also a major reason one of my newer characters, Hri'zok, left their home to find gainful employment elsewhere to support their commune. The recent events with the murder in the casino have actually played a weirdly heavy indirect impact on some of my characters, seeing how some people on station are being affected by it after the fact and are talking about it with my own characters. What roles do you plan on playing after the application is accepted?: I'm looking to primarily play Head of Personnel and Corporate Liaison. Characters you intend to use for command or have created for command. Include the job they will be taking: - Dalask Caladius, a Dominian Head of Personnel who is offering their history of banking and human resources for NT's finest on the Aurora (I recycled the name from a character I used all of three times so don't hurt me if it sounds familiar). - Huynh Yen Phong, a Hephaestus Corporate Liaison from New Hai Phong who is being sent to Aurora in light of the phoron shortage to snipe more contracts from NT for Hephaestus (might not get around to playing this one, but listing it just in case). How would you rate your own roleplaying?: I give it a solid 8/10, but I'm always looking for more criticism and ways to improve my ability. Do you understand your whitelist is not permanent, and may be stripped following continuous administrative action?: I do, and hopefully it won't come to that. Have you familiarized yourself with the wiki pages for the command roles?: I have! Extra notes: Thanks for the time to look over this. I'm 100% willing to listen to any criticisms with my ability to roleplay or perhaps my grasp on the game at large. Feel free to shoot me any questions here, or any in DMs should you feel they're not relevant to this application.

At any rate, my support is for the idea in general; it generates enough interest and expands on what kinds of characters it allows people to make, if done right. If there’s another set of names pushed out that are a little more clear on what each role does at a glance, I wouldn’t be opposed to looking over them and giving them my support. Good luck with the suggestion .o7

I’m probably going to step up to the bat and be labeled a class traitor for my opinion here, but a change of medical towards being more research oriented *does* make sense. It would be like working on a thesis so to speak; on top of being a doctor and medical professional, you’re also doing what doctors IRL do, including performing trials of new medicine, experimental techniques, and other such things. As a whole, the flavor of medical leaning towards this would be rather fascinating. However, I do think that the name changes would need to be a closer merge of Coalf’s idea paired with some names that give more recognition to what the roles do overall. A good pro of having the names kept *as is* is that people see the name and probably have a basic idea of what that role does 90% of the time. If we get too crazy with the naming process, we could be alienating new players somewhat. Just my two cents. On this note too, putting research and medical next to each other in the remap might not be an awful idea, and having *some* cross departmental play would be interesting (such as robotics and surgery having access to the same operating theater, chemists having the potential to make chems and do research for science on the side). That said this might not be the thread for those ideas though based on what I’ve read :’^) (PS: chances are if you ping me on this thread I will not reply, I already had to get through an hour of word soup just to reach the end and give my parting thoughts. Think about how much energy you want to spend on a one hour post if I might not get to reading it) Also, to be fair, if the thread is named ‘No More Medical’, I can see the upheaval, the title is a tad misleading

Very cool! Keep in mind to emphasize their tone then often as an IPC’s quirk is a distinguishing trait for them. Looking forward to seeing your IPC then when your application gets approved, duster. ? +1

Hello! You are definitely someone I’ve gotten to enjoy some late night/early morning deadhour rounds with (PST gang rise up!). Ryog has shown as a satisfying level of ability when it comes to roleplay and is a pleasant person to interact with, as I’ve garnered from limited contact. I have faith in their ability to roleplay out the concept well, and biochemist is literally one of the best roles for this type of character I feel. However! You’re not off the hook so easy. Some questions before a +1, equally curious and probing of your knowledge on IPCs: 1) what are your preliminary ideas on what the IPC quirk might look like? 2) what would Alexander’s views be on obtaining freedom and their current position as an owned synthetic? Thank you for your time, and glad to see the application!

[Denied] Shadow7889's Reapplication
Haydizzle replied to Shadow7889's topic in Whitelist Applications Archives
I find that I agree with your own analysis. Being aware of your own shortcomings and that one can never not get better at roleplay are both good things. I too enjoy big words, so if you withhold any from me, I WILL show up to your house and demand you give them to me. All in all, I would definitely trust you in a command role. Thanks again for your feedback and time for your reply. +1 -
[Denied] Shadow7889's Reapplication
Haydizzle replied to Shadow7889's topic in Whitelist Applications Archives
Hello. I've thought for a hot minute on what I wanted to say here since I didn't want to go on some superfluous tirade that was both extremely corny and long winded. I'll try to be to the point as possible. There exists a handful of people on server with a "remarkable" history that I would be rather wary of putting in any kind of command situation. Shadow does not strike me as one of those people. Over the course of more contemporary discussions with him, I've gotten to know a pair of Shadow's characters through brief or lengthy interactions. I've become acquainted with their impressive standard for RP, their more lighthearted, risible activity in lulls of station activity, and also behavior regarding antags and conflict on server. I firmly stand on that front--Shadow makes for material to drive a round and engage properly with the Aurora's denizens. I'm also of the mind to say that "self-penance" in disappearing from the server for a time as a direct consequence of committing a really erroneous mistake exemplifies character and remorse. Shadow has, in addition to this, shown me a lot of patience as I navigated through figuring out some kind of error (I spent about 10 minutes trying to fix his IPC with repairs that should've taken about 1 minute; I ahelped it to get back on track, Prate might remember that actually), which I think is also a rather fine trait to have for command staff. Overall, I think Shadow deserves a second chance for command. However, I've in my possession one concern I want to air and seek awareness on. Sa'tak's behavior in general, from what I have personally garnered, might lean towards being more validhunt-y in nature. This is also a pretty common problem for unathi in general though from what I keep seeing, and Sa'tak also does not tend towards it as badly compared to other unathi, so I'm personally taking it with a grain of salt. Anyway, I do have one question: what do you think you need to work on when it comes to roleplay? I look forward to your response or any commentary you have. -
[ACCEPTED] Unathi Marriage
Haydizzle replied to geeves's topic in Lore Canonization Applications Archive
Alright. Here's my fresh hot take on it. There's nothing bad about this idea. In fact, this might be something I do myself. It's fun and simple and has a good idea behind it and plays into the spiritualism aspect really well. However, I personally don't think it has enough merit to get past being player-created lore. Marriage ceremonies for unathi in particular are a pretty unique niche and are not something that would be utilized on station enough to be something I think should be on the wiki. -
Yes hello! This was a nice read. This concept is definitely very interesting—I enjoy the spin on typical Queendom lore by using a concept I don’t often seen toyed with in lore, which would be ‘misplaced spirits.’ Your application shows promise and good understanding of some less used aspects of unathi lore. Ironically enough I had a concept for something like this the other day, but I definitely think you will execute it better than I. However, as deputy, I’m not here to just pat your back. I have a couple of questions as well when it comes to figuring out your understanding of the lore as well as your first character. So! Without any more shenanigans: 1) what will bring your character to the station, and what job will she perform there? 2) what religion do think she prescribes to and believes in? (There are no wrong answers here, but I’m curious to see if you may stray from a quote "expected" reply with a unique reasoning and understanding.) 3) exploring the themes of the species in general is what attracts most people to apply for that species. I noticed this is your first forums post and, as a result, your first whitelist application too. Going off of your answer to the ‘why do you wish to play this species,’ are there any specific elements of the lore that brought you to this species in particular? Such as the specific faction of choice, how unathi behave, etc. Also, for comments, views, and +1s, I recommend linking your application in OOC after you play in a round, so people can comment on your ability to roleplay. I look forward to your answers, and thank you for the time and effort in applying!

Hey! I played that paramedic, Kars. As corporate liaison, you went out of your way to chat with me, and we kept up conversation for a healthy amount of time, nothing to sneeze at. It was quite enjoyable, and though I tend to play really dynamic extroverted characters, your end of conversations, interactions, and questioning felt solid and made me want to continue that heavy RP period. I only have a bit of constructive criticism. As command, (while that was a good moment for me and I enjoyed being selfish/taking up some more time to RP,) I would consider how much time you're spending with people. Being in that position, it would be good to have presence in round, even if the presence amounts to "oh, they brought me donuts near the start of the shift" or whatever else the super simple interaction is. Being recognizable and seeming approachable would help a lot! Again though, you played the character well, answered questions ,and gave useful information (as I played the dolt), so all in all it was very pleasant and left an impression on my character. Big +1. I also have a quick question in regards to your initial application, more so to satiate my curiosity. How do you feel your response to the 'purpose of Head of Staff' question relates to you as you play corporate liaison? Thanks again for the fun in game. ?

Thank you for your questions and feedback! 1) Dominia will always have a nice little spot in my heart. Schwann did a good job reworking them from where they were before, and it really roped me in interest wise. However, while I will acknowledge that there are a couple of things in the lore that feel a little forced (like the introduction of unathi into Dominian society for one), I ultimately think that the marriage of unathi spiritualism and human culture is what makes Dominia stand out, so I would be for them staying as a part of the empire. Personally, seeing an arc with them in conflict perhaps with a revised Grim Compact or even the Hegemony would be extraordinary! I don't want to get ahead of myself with an arc though, I'd definitely need a little more experience leading into it, but I'm interested nonetheless in the future possibility near the end of the year or similar. 2) Well! I'm always a little spacey--I unfortunately had two parents with ADHD, so getting it was inevitable. As a result, it's easier for me to get too far ahead or lose focus; writing the essay for the prompt already had my mind leap towards what ideas I had for Ouerea for example. However, this has been something that I've always struggled with, and a point of my life that's always with me, so by now I have a lot better hold of it than lilttle 5th grader me. Even then, sometimes I'm still really productive because of it. There's a distinct memory I have where I put off a paper I had to do in 8th grade, and instead of doing the essay due literally the next day, I finished a slew of projects that weren't due for another three weeks or so. Anyway! Sorry for oversharing, I hope that answers the question. 3) Teamwork wise, I'm a natural leader. I don't want to toot my own horn, but generally speaking if there is a lack of direction and people are not working, I start to crack the whip and organize people actually. I think I fit the 'one gay of the group' meme pretty well. My only downfall for teamwork that I need to work on is staying organized. Organization is not my biggest foe, but in a group it's easy for me to not stay on top of it. If I can find someone that's good with it and I pair with them though, look out! I can be a real driving force when collaborating. I love team projects because it can be a chance to see other points of view, and with the lore team as it stands now, there are many people already on it that I adore and would love to get to work with on lore projects. PHEW okay questions answered thank you next ? Thanks for your time.

Thank you for your question and feedback. For Ouerea, the first thing that immediately pops into my mind just goes back to my essay prompt. It would be interesting to see some slang/informal dialect of Azaziba that's evolved to be more compatible with skrell and humans for example. Skrell's headtails could simulate tail movements, and humans or even skrell could just simply use a leg to emulate a limb they don't have. Some preliminary thoughts on it at least. Alternatively, instead of Azaziba, sign language could have become a norm there for most as a means of interspecies communication instead of Tau Ceti Basic, which would give sign language an interesting use and see more usage outside of being used for deaf and mute people. Culturally, there is a missed opportunity to see where some humans, skrell, and unathi all have common ground and bond (through avenues like music or entertainment; potentially looking at human and skrell counterculture affecting unathi perhaps?), and where they start to disagree or where conflict emerges as a result of cultural clashing (skrell being more casual towards relationships versus unathi taking them more seriously versus humans being a middle ground). I would also like to see about Ouerea having some corporate dystopian vibes to it as well; Hephaestus' presence on the planet could very easily be ruining its natural ecosystems, so perhaps there is pushback from some unathi who think that such operations have consequences spiritually. Anyway! I hope that answers your question. If I was too vague on anything, let me know. Thanks for your time.

Haydizzle replied to kyres1's topic in General Announcements
A based and welcome change. Being able to be in one server for lore is great. Out of curiosity, what are you looking for the bot to do? -
Thank you for your question. Well! Aut'akh also seems like a hot topic from what I've seen from other people. There is a lot of room to see how they develop and overcome their current situation. I know some people call for their removal, but with the amount of investment put into them by people by now, it would feel rather clenched to take them out of the game. I would definitely be interested in perhaps pursuing some new lore on them as I mentioned before in some kind of storyline with IPCs, maybe finding common ground in both being largely outcasts and also stinky machines maybe they both benefit together in some way. I'd ideally want to work on too the various meta stereotypes about them (like Optikams and Samariites being edgy), but I'm personally unsure about what could be done for that sort of thing. At any rate! I think their development would be interesting. I can't deliver any pertinent promises as to me getting something like this done quickly if promoted, but it is something I would definitely assist with. Thanks for your time.

Thank you for the questions! I think that it's personally a great piece of lore. I know I've heard some people gripe and harp on it, but I do think that it's an example of an extreme situation caused by conflict in which a social paradigm is really shaken up. Since it has been untouched for a while, I'd like to see some work done on it and give it some new life and aspects. One way I'd be doing that would be ideally with my essay topic; I would LOVE to give different regions/nations/cultures in unathi lore their own minor twists with language and mannerisms, which would include the Queendom in the long run. Otherwise, I don't have much off the top of my head for them. As far as I'm concerned though, I wouldn't be opposed to think tanking lore on it and seeing what more can be done for it. Thanks again for your time.
-
Thank you for your time! I'm glad the essay interests you as much as me. 1. Factions wise, Grim Compact. I distinctly remember when you polled people in the unathi discord (before it got depreciated, may it rest with Th'akh) about the Grim Compact, and thinking about how I probably would've done something similar in your shoes. I think that is easiest one of the weaker areas of unathi lore, and I don't think I see many people that enjoy that aspect of the lore more than they have problems with it. Ideally, I'd aim to revise the lore to be more accessible and usable for players when they are designing a character. From experience, if a setting's lore doesn't pique interest, tell a story, or feel like it fits with the rest of the lore, it can be jarring for whoever is working with it, regardless of it being for a roleplay environment or book or show. Depending on your definition of a 'faction,' I also mentioned Ouerea as needing some love as well as Gakalzaal (though that latest article though... ?). Ouerea would probably be the one I'd gun for first after language and mannerisms though, as the idea of a bigger blended culture of humans, skrell, and unathi would be really cool. 2. Unathi as a species are very spiritual (and as another note, that's what I enjoy about Aurora lore from what I've found, that different species usually have different aspects that draw people in). Forgotten Realms lore usually does something similar where different species often have their own focus that draws in players or gives them a good starting point to work off and do their own take of. Character creation is probably one of my favorite parts of being a DM, and could be probably cited as a reason I want to be a lore deputy; I want to create content that inspires people to make characters. Alright! Little tangent aside, to be more specific, I think the biggest draw of unathi to me is their different conflicts in relation to the setting. An almost post-apocalyptic vibe mixed with religious conflict and classist struggles is extremely appealing. I think, mixed with the NanoTrasen setting, some unathi have similar backstory themes of trying to 'rebuild' after the Contact War by seeking out better jobs among the stars. My application for unathi was a person who lost their lives due to the Contact War and worked hard to find a way out of the Wasteland, making a better life for themselves (which slots in with the above pretty well!). I think in the department where it could be made 'better,' that portion of the question ties back to my application in general. Unique language and mannerisms can make creatures feel varied and diverse without actually making them drastically different from ourselves. The mannerisms like chuffing and baring your neck are a good start, but I want to inspire people to perhaps come up with some of their own slang and phrases, and do their own spins to truly grow into it. Whenever I see Eridani for example on station, there are some people who I see extrapolate the slang and go above and beyond to do their own research to develop it for their character, like a dreg using South African influences. It's touches like these that can really make characters diverse and interesting that I just adore. Anyway! Sorry, that one was a little long. 3. This is a tough question! I probably spent the most amount of time on this one actually. Most species have some kind of relationship with unathi in some way; skrells and humans are on Ouerea; the K'lax vaurca in the Wasteland; tajara and unathi on Gakalzaal; dionae trying to help heal the Wasteland. Honestly, this might seem like a weird pick based on what I put in my application, but I'd actually like to explore a possible relationship between IPCs and unathi, whether it's a symbiotic tale (perhaps with Aut'akh?) or one of conflict (like extremist groups of unathi terrorizing IPCs brazenly). There are avenues that can be taken for either, and that relationship would be one I would be keen to work on: have to work on something more original eventually, right? Thanks for the questions! I kind of went overboard with the responses, but they were all too good to leave short ;-;
