BYOND Ckey: dessysalta Discord username: remratsuken Character names: Kira Vasquez is my biggest, my other WL characters being Kasa'an, Sadie, Za'Akaix'Tonz, and A Funeral For Yesterday's Promises (and Eimhir Fenella if you count the command WL). Past that, GEVURAH, Nar'lth'tp Iska and Ungnyeo are solid contenders. Species you are applying to play: Tajara ------------------------------ What colour do you plan on making your first alien character?: Black (0, 0, 0 or thereabouts) Have you read the lore pages for the species you wish to be whitelisted for?: Nope, this is all homebrew (yes lmao) Why do you wish to play this species?: Part of it is because I aim to eventually get every race WL (one to go, after this!) to better acquaint myself with the lore, but the other part is because of the countless Tajaran characters I've seen that amount to more than playing the funny catpeople race. Boris Novinky, Ana Roh'hi'tin, and I think it was Kastyvir that was a Rredouane priest that I thought was badass, hence why I'm applying with one. Pretty much every species app I writes how much I like the dichotomies between the race in question and humans in this section, but I'm drawn to Tajara because of how similar they are, really. Tajara were pretty 1-1 with humans to me at a glance and it's their timeline/small differences that set them apart (like having sword-bearing priests for instance, or the whole "we're felines" thing). As far as references to human politics go, the naming schemes of the major factions (People's Republic vs. Democratic People's Republic both being very similar to the Chinese and Korean groups in my mind) served as an introductory hook that led me to do my research and see where the similarities are versus where the differences lie. I also have to admit that there isn't a lot of interesting super-cold snowy planets where you can convey a theme of emptiness or long-lasting endurance that measure up to Adhomai, which opens the way for a bunch of different ideas I have down the line (a xenoarch who is very resourceful and waste-not coming from the most extreme parts of the planet, a cook who was often poor and finds himself drawn to the heat of a stove psychologically, etc.) Honestly, I also want to get back into playing priests. Having a whole god in the Ma'ta'ke faith that revolves around gambling, victory, and fighting is just another reason for me to jump back onto the trope of "fighting is awesome" that I love so much. Seriously, I love that goddamn trope, do it more often. Looking at you, Zandiziite Adhomai. What makes role-playing this species different than role-playing a human?: The first thing that comes to mind (and by far the most boring part of this section) is going to be the differences in biology, how although they're about the same height as us, they have entirely different bodies and systems adapted to cold, sleeping for long periods of time, and combat effectiveness. Biting and slashing leads to more primitive and animalistic roots, roots that still exist today given the harsh nature of Adhomai as a planet and the need for strong, durable workers and society peoples following the civil war. Blah blah blah, everybody gets the differences in biology and the obvious "he/she/they/this one" versus "I/me." Economically, they're sort of in this gray area between human and alien politics, not quite in an ancient system where there are vassals but also not quite in the perfect modern-day society. With the general stance of Adhomai following the revolutions being anti-corporate (or anti-corporate/anti-xeno enough to say "come back when we're ready" at least) it almost gives them the position of a second Sol (this is hyperbolic, but I'm sure the lore devs will get what I mean) while still remaining fundamentally close to many other parts of the Spur (Moghresian traditionalists being the same, Scarabs(?) generally being very closed-off because of the weight of interacting with so many people and corporations and having to be extremely resourceful, etc.) and being just as politically charged as every other race. You have three different groups that are all in a cold war with one another, different stances and ideas on how to live or prosper being detestable or even worth killing over between the three. Sort of startlingly similar to Sol is how they went through two major wars with just an insane amount of casualties, but are still willing to be at odds with one another, and in almost every instance have no choice but to pick a stance and make enemies or friends based on it. It reinforces that they're not incredibly civilized and technologically advanced, nor are they barbaric lords and peasants worshipping plots of land and encouraging warfare. They're a "normal" society suddenly thrust into a galactic hellscape of corporations and interstellar powers. I personally interpret them as an interesting callback to where we are in real life compared to the rest of the Spur's either total technological advancement (Sol/Biesel/Nralakk) and the more feudalistic/imperial sections (Hegemony/Dominia). ------------------------------ Character Name: Jovan Ulizovski Write a backstory for your character. This may include their origin, education, personality and how they arrived to the SCCV Horizon. "Be his blade steady, his effort firm but disciplined; be his faith of no question, his personality of no mind," He had never known fear, he was hardly a child; little more than a cog in the machine. He had been taught to cook and how to speak; how to write and how to read, each carefully curated corridor of life open to his for the taking. Twenty-four-ten was an admirable year, if only to Jovan's family, life given unto him and allowed to roam free. To Jovan, this eight years of life was blissful, perhaps with bad days and good days, but he found solace in the cold. He was everything; ignorant, happy, and energetic. He didn't grasp the concept of politics; he saw no point in it. What was the point at all of thinking of horrid power fantasies and superior races or classes? There was no point in it all, he says, for it only pulled him down further into that pit of anger, and... "His eyes without mercy, his teeth bared, but not in anger; nay, in respect, but not for his opponent, but for his spirit and godhood," Monolithic blocks of fuel and fire hurdling through space? Hard enough to believe, but harboring aliens? What were these things? They are bipedal and clearly ancient, their ships housing technology beyond what this one had ever seen. What is this talk about mining and mineral-stripping? It had been done for centuries, why was it so important now? Were they here for it? But why? It is his planet, not theirs, her people's resources and economies, societies and lives, they had no right to be here. "Begone with them," he heard his mother cry, a thousand more voices in higher places echoing her. This one doesn't understand, what has just happened? Even three years would not be enough for him to understand... "And ever did he harken, harken, harken again to his heart and it's forever-wisdom, harken again to his blade, which know naught else but to carve, and harken again to himself and his body, which demanded change where none was found," Blood, he had seen it with his own eyes. Cries of pain and howls of fear and anger, of sorrow and uncertainty. He had seen his aggressors take bullets and die like their sense did: quietly, and without regard to others. He saw shackles broken, guns thrust into claws of those who were barely old enough to comprehend such a thing as total and absolute as death. He felt pity for his friends. He felt envy for the highly men in ivory towers so afraid to lose what they had. He felt so many things, from misdirection and disgust to anxiety and melancholy. When the door of his own home was kicked open, he felt a new emotion surge to the front of his body: Rage. "Something just snapped, something inside of him. He didn't care anymore. He didn't care about the finer days in Dolor, this one didn't care if they never saw a clear sky again, they didn't care if they lived—they didn't care about anything. All they felt was the fire in their heart, and finally, he fought." He sharpened his claws with a file to ensure they would cut, but chip into his enemies. He let his mane grow for the first time in years, each decade lending it inches of steel-wool-like fluff to nod to his age and superiority. He was bound to be happy again, surely, but not now. No, now was his time to fight. Now was his time to see through what his family couldn't, what useless bastards they all were. It was time for change, and he would be the finger that pulled the trigger. One revolution. Millions of lives. It was the beginning of something new; a time of prosperity and intellectualism, and then it was taken from him again. Hadii, why? Why did they hate you so? If he must fight in another revolution, so be it. He will do it a thousand times to get his way for his people. "-but they do not tell them that time is the true mender of wounds. His anger, so bright then, had been quelled in time. Each death blended in with one another. By the time the Democratic People's Republic had been established, he had hardly the strength to growl. The world had moved on since then. The world had emptied." Jovan left Adhomai in 2465. The DPRA was a force he needed a break from, no matter how patriotic he considered himself. He wanted to be somewhere, anywhere else, not in the hands of his friends and family, not around errant dissenters he despised, not around the other Zhan-Khazan or even his own home. He would come back, but now was a time for a break from it all. Forty years of fighting. It was enough to weaken even the strongest of wills. He wanted to do something else good, something that was not killing, something that was not terrorizing or idly scraping by. He wanted to thank his patron god for allowing him what he has and had done. The DPRA was victorious. It was time to rest with such a thing under his belt. "Rredouane," He whispered. "When he stepped onto his shuttle to depart, he saw you. You, whom he had always wanted to see. It is only natural he preaches his name for others." How has the recent events of the Orion Spur impacted your character? Events such as the Phoron Scarcity, the Solarian Collapse or even the Invasions of Biesel for interstellar-wide affairs, while region-specific events such as the Peacekeeper Mandate, The Titan Rises or even Cold Dawn may impact your character. Jovan's most influence comes from both revolutions, having lived through both of them himself, "taking ass and kicking names" being his own, not entirely accurate description. He largely didn't focus on extraterrestrial politics except where it would benefit him; knowing his people had been armed by Sol was delicious, but knowing what Sol did to them with their bans undid the good. Megacorporations like NanoTrasen trying to nickel and dime the planet wasn't of concern (or of much lesser concern) than the rifles and blades he wielded throughout the revolutions and the people on the other side of them. Cold Dawn was more fuel to the anti-corporate fire, but not enough to incite hatred for everyone under the megacorporation. He understood what happens when greedy politicians and wealthy men and women wagged their fingers at shiny objects; it was not entirely the crew's fault for their actions, but someone must take responsibility. How does your character view the megacorporation they work for? The Conglomerate is distasteful to Jovan. Had he the chance the chance to preach in Sol, he would—but this was a no-go for several reasons. Biesel was maybe just as bad, owed to the megacorporate nature of its government and the surrounding entities. Dominia was just another case of the same, the Hegemony had only barely began their friendship what with Zandiziite Adhomai, and Moghes was far too warm, anyhow. The Conglomerate, to him, is a necessary evil to bow to temporarily in the name of Rredouane, though the Ma'ta'ke faith as a whole was a close contender, even if he wasn't as personable with the other deities as he was the god of victory. He is here to make money, friends, and spread faith, not to better the monopolizing interstellar power. Notes: For the sake of clarity (since I had more of a narrative in mind with each answer than straight responses) here's a spoiler with questions the lore team cares the most about with straight answers.

Player Complaint - Virgo Panahi
dessysalta replied to Alaunus_Lux's topic in Complaints Boards Archive
Hopefully I'm not peanutting here, I would also like to add to this complaint a couple of things, as I was the HOS (Kira Vasquez) this round. Panahi also went on a tirade of holding a shotgun and frankly self-antagging (to my knowledge) in the bar and making just a ginormous fuss over IC regulations. I'm not sure if they weren't briefed on the whole "this is an HRP server" thing but regardless of traitor status all they did was wave a shotgun around, vehemently deny everything and ask for a lawyer, and then jump into a locker that ended up getting dragged to security. Their comment "you should weld me in" (or words to that effect) also hints at them being a new face from one of the other servers that allows you to do that, but that's neither here nor there. They were generally just a very unrealistic, very insane character. A few minutes later, they're in security being charged, and then they ended up getting winded by staff. Given they were un-winded later and I received an ALOOC from Noble Row about how they're ready to roleplay now, I figured that was admin intervention setting them straight on things. What Lux described above was immediately after that winding. It couldn't have been more than five minutes from being released from security (so maybe ten total). As for what came after everything up until that point, from arresting to suspending and bwoinking, I'm not sure. We didn't see them again but did get several reports of them refusing orders from other heads of staff (namely the OM and operations in general) to get out of their department after trespassing several times, which led to two more arrests. -

an open letter to all engineers: remodel places more often!! i like seeing it!! get the CE's permission ICly and then turn the bar into a cool night club looking place!! make more places look industrial!! its fucking awesome!!
-
If there is no CE work with another Head of Staff like Captain or XO. This was done semi-regularly on the Aurora 2 with the IT level or whatever it was called. People also once terraformed the entire (or at least one Z-level) of the asteroid the Aurora 2 was on. I think other departments should reach out to engineering and ask for remodelling when things are quiet and all the engineering things are set up.
HAVE FUN! THIS IS A THREAT!

Return Loyalty Implants as a CCIA Action
dessysalta replied to Butterrobber202's topic in Suggestions & Ideas
These are all pretty good points and I concede, but how long ago was the Elyra thing? Only one canonical cyborgification speaks to the rarity or it. -
Return Loyalty Implants as a CCIA Action
dessysalta replied to Butterrobber202's topic in Suggestions & Ideas
I like the idea of this in concept, but the Conglomerate isn't so dystopian as to tackle someone for insubordination and brainwash them. Cyborgification exists only as essentially the absolute worst-case scenario, marooning is preferable if a death sentence is wanted, and in the case of actual murders they'll just arrest you. Constant action that's deemed inappropriate by CCIA results in firing or disciplinary action, not getting your brain rearranged. Loyalty implants should totally be an antagonist thing, though. They don't really have a reason to exist outside of that. Biesel/The CoC/maybe Sol to a point would never allow some random-ass person to get brainwashed just because they're an asshole on a corporate ship, and there's no reason for it to be a choice thing either (i.e. "take the implant or you're fired") because next to nobody would agree to it (though I'd totally be in favor of this being a thing, the choice that is). -
I figure it's a glitch pertaining to using old/dead character names; unsure if it persists after the recent character name update. Swapping from one name to another in character selection probably tricks the client into thinking you're attempting to reuse a dead character's name (hence why I couldn't change it back to GEVURAH after I tried to make it GEVURA).
-
Agreed with Carver. The grace period placed upon naming is so people can have second thoughts or reconsiderations (take, for instance, someone mistakenly playing an izweski or other Hegemony consul, and then realizing it'd be more fun if they were from a different place on Moghes, Dominia, etc.) like I've done several times. That said, I'd also recommend that a system change take place that makes it so simply entering a name and then changing it to something else doesn't bar you from that name. I once tried to change "Gevurah" to "GEVURAH," and it wouldn't let me, so I had to contact a headmin. Having that limit only apply after the grace period has finished/after the character's been played at least once would be a much better fit.

accepted Mr Lenny wants all the power (command WL)
dessysalta replied to MrLenny's topic in Whitelist Applications Archives
You fucking better promote Bloodclaw to OM. Also, I've had nothing but positive experiences with MrLenny's characters, so I have no doubt he'll be able to play in a command role. +1! -

BYOND Key: dessysalta Discord Username: remratsuken Character Name: Kira Vasquez Item Name: defaced warlord flag Item Function(s): It's a large flag. Put it on the wall, maybe wear it as a blanket. Item Description: The flag of some minor Solarian defector state that has been stitched and painted over with various energetic words and the number and emblem of the 104th Fleet. The most notable is written in Sol Common, "Szalai's finest!" Extended Description: Not so uncommon within what was the Human Wildlands, and even prior to the Wildlands' formation, many minor Solarian successor states tried to form and either failed or were forcefully quelled or absorbed by the more capable fleets and warlords that were part of Sol's standing navy and army. Fleet Admiral Klaudia Szalai and the First Middle Ring Battlefleet itself were particularly heavy-handed with rebels or secessionists that opposed Sol or considered themselves sovereign powers, and the 103rd-107th Fleets commonly defaced, tore apart, or burned these trivial attempts at propaganda. This particular flag has many patriotic epithets on the backside, from Sol Common phrases, to Tradeband monikers, to TCB and Freespeak slang, with the ink in the center of the back reading: "Our attempt at a better life, one year at a time." Why is your character bringing this item to work?: Kira is a strange patriot by ordinary means, at least from the perspective of many working on the Horizon. She wants to forgive the Sol system for doing what it has done to countless innocent lives, she wants to embrace Biesel for letting her live a better, inclusive life, and she doesn't know which to align herself with, even if she always says Sol's her loyalty. Over the years of working for herself, for Sol, for NanoTrasen and now the Conglomerate, she's had time to realize that being a patriot isn't ignoring the faults of one nation and playing up their achievements, but accepting these faults and hoping for a better future; a better Sol. This flag stands for the 104th Fleet under Szalai's command, part of what would become the Southern Military District, known for its loyalty to the Alliance even when all hope was lost and they could have chosen to become pirates or some other antagonistic side. Much like how everyone else on the Horizon likes to hang up their flags for whatever reason they might have, Kira wants to hang this one in security. Not because it says "Sol number one," but because it reminds her that she fought for a better future for herself, her family, Sol, and now her friends. If nothing else, it advertises the Wildlands Squadron just a bit more, and draws attention to her old service--like any Sol veteran, she loves talking about it. How did your character obtain this item?: Even prior to the main collapse of Sol, there was infighting to be found and AWOL soldiers trying to play God or resent the Alliance and Kira's fellow man. One such deployment to a small asteroid housing a group of miscreant soldiers under the name of "The Solarian Province of Firesetters" (at the time named for no other reason than their usage of incendiary rounds, but always played up and framed as though they were taking on some "noble goal" of Solarian reformation; the joke of course being these soldiers had done nothing to better Sol and were no better than rebellious pirates) led to the 104th assaulting and arresting each and every rifleman that had defected or attempted to fire upon the 1MRB. Interestingly enough, these individuals had fashioned the old Solarian flag into one of their own, complete with the usage of black and gold ("The Front ended up using those colors better, hijo.") and even a large seal in the center ("A seal? Really? They couldn't have just put an ounce of creative thought into it?"). Kira, at the time Sergeant Vasquez, took note of this flag as the defecting men were cuffed and brought in. When her men stepped in to tear it down, she grabbed their arm and stopped them. Her eyes wandered around the room and found cans of spray paint, the ones that must have been used to make the flag in the first place. She stepped over to the box and picked one up, shaking it back and forth. "No, no. I've got a better idea." What value does this item have to your character, and what story does it tell?: The flag is of great sentimental value to Kira, someone who has come to terms with her military service and even yearns for the days she could go kicking pirates or dissenters in their pants again. It's more than your usual flag; it's not necessarily a keepsake to advertise the Solarian Armed Forces (she has plenty of those, and trust me, she doesn't want to make an enemy by hanging it near a Biesellite or, God forbid, a Gadpathurian), and it's not meant to be as blandly and loudly patriotic as a nation's flag. It conveys the message that while Kira might be another dime-a-dozen Solarian veteran, she did something good once, and maybe Sol did too. After all, the Wildlands Squadron, not to mention Kira herself, is here for a reason, light years away from her home, still fighting for a just cause, this time on the Horizon. Sprites: Kira104th.dmi Additional Comments: Sprites by myself! I also asked @CampinKiller if this would be accepted from a human lore standpoint and got the go-ahead. Shading is a little weird because it's a spray-painted flag.

Move the sprint key from the spacebar to the shift key
dessysalta replied to restricted's topic in Archive
I'm in favor of keeping it to space, honestly. Set a macro for whatever button you want to toggle mov_intent(?) and there you go. Space is an alternative for shorter bursts. Adding it to shift would make examining a pain and combat while sprinting worse methinks. Bay also has it set to space for similar reasons I'm pretty sure. -
Hi, since I haven't seen anyone comment from the security side of things, I'll do that now. If I'm peanutting, let me know. I was Commander Iska for that round, and while I didn't necessarily have an issue with getting wiped, I would be amiss if I didn't say "giving two combat-grade exosuits and an uplink to a pirate base when all we have is a PEAC and one powerloader chassis with guns felt like a bit much." As far as "validing" goes, I should say that my character's motivations are what drove me to weed out the pirate base, not that I needed some action or wanted to get some easy arrests/kills. Considering my character is an Iska (and, yes, mistakenly introduced themselves as Iska's Adventurers, this was my fault) and Central Command gave him the go ahead, he was more than willing to perform a raid on a pirate hideout. Though to me I thought it'd spice up the round if security wasn't holed up on the Horizon for once given nothing happened for over an hour and a half and I was starting to think it was an extended round. The only thing that rubbed me the wrong way is when we were in full retreat the two combat mechs, you guessed it, swarmed us and killed us in about 2 minutes on the outside. Maybe five if you count people dying from their injuries over that course, but the Vaurca went out of their way to execute us too (and I don't necessarily blame them, that's their right) and I feel you can't make the argument that the bugs didn't know we were Conglomerate-aligned after having seen all of our corporate gear and the Intrepid if for a moment. It felt decently aggravating to spend over an hour gearing security up, prepping for this mission, then we touchdown, Horizon tells us to GTFBO (get the fuck back on) and then we die without doing pretty much any damage aside from disabling their two mechs. We got steamrolled and the only other alternative would have been to do something that got me ahelped (since the bridge crew were yelling at us to get back on, and I had no reason to deny them that). As far as adminbus goes, I should go on record to say that the idea of raiding a souped up base on behalf of the Conglomerate for funsies is pretty awesome. Conceptually, that is. The only issue is we never actually got to do that, we turned our backs for one second (some might call this a mistake, but we didn't really have a choice) and instantly died. I wouldn't personally mind if more adminbus stuff like this happened occasionally, but we were woefully outclassed fighting the most brute-resistant species that had two combat mechs and heavy armor. We were all humans (+ a tajara and a sinta) in voidsuits. Of course we're not going to win, especially when the other side is offered punji traps, fuel traps (see: the entrance that was covered in the stuff and got ignited immediately), reinforced barriers, barbed wire and a chokepoint on top of the uplink and two mechs. Past that, I'll echo what has already been said on the pirate side of things about IC reasoning and the mentioned gear.
