Lower the secret weighting of Malfunction mode
Mofo1995 replied to Nanako's topic in Completed Projects
Hello, yes, I'm 100% fully in support of this. Especially when we first made the code change back in February, it felt like every single round the AI was broken in some way. Either through malfunction or traitor AI. It feels like malfAI happens every single day, while other game modes like changeling, vampire, ninja, and wizard seem comparatively rare, and I only see them once a week if I'm lucky. The gamemode is rough and needs some work overall, but reasons why Mofo1995 absolutely hates AI Malfunction game mode (but only when he's playing heads of staff and especially RD and especially Skrell RD) is irrelevant to this thread, except in order to identify that I have the ulterior motive of not wanting to be subjected to it at the frequency with which I am. So: 1. It seems like this gamemode is WAAAAYYYY more frequent than it's contemporaries with the exceptions of traitor and autotraitor. All the other game modes in the secret rotation feel rare in comparison to these three. 2. I personally don't like the gamemode. -
[Accepted]NebulaFlare's Skrell App

I think this is a very nice introduction. Namely, I think it did a superb job of really giving some depth and detail to the relationship Kluup and Aveo share. Before, it was described in a way (Despite my misgivings about their introduction) which made it seem sweet, but now seeing some dialogue and some time of them together during what is sure to be a tough moment for Aveo really makes me feel it rather than read it. Kudos for this. The tension, fear, and anxiety here is tangible. I think you've written it very well. I like that you've taken the ideas of indoctrination, battles of propaganda, and perspective, and really run with them here. Aveo's parents have had their child taken away from them, thrown in prison, and forced to watch as the man who, by their reckoning, kidnapped their child brainwash him in their own beliefs. The way in which Aveo's parents hearts are torn at the tragedy of their lives, especially after the difficulty they went through to have Aveo in the first place, really spoke to me. Even if they are supporters of a cold-calculating, malicious super AI. Objectively, we OOCly know the rebels side is true, but I like how the lines get blurred ICly. This internal monologue served extremely well to give us some insight into who Aveo is, what he thinks about, how he feels. I think it served to enrich his character more as he's forced to think about the struggle and the rivalry between his two care takers. His parents and Kluup come from very different perspectives and are vicious allies, and I like how Aveo feels caught in the middle. One thing I have to confess is that Aveo was a bit pretentious and wordy. But, I think you did this with the intention of conveying his intelligence and his ability to think philosophically. Ultimately, I thought it was a nice touch. I think this story was excellent all around. Kluup is an extremely good guy, and the bond between him and Aveo was really made stronger by this. The story was powerful, and brought up a lot of strong themes of ideological struggle, perspective, family, and even redemption. Now to move onto your 3 or 4 other posts/stories. -
[Accepted]NebulaFlare's Skrell App

Gimme like, 20 minutes and time to double post. I promised you I would read all your ammended material, and now that I'm done with a weekend of merry-making, satan worship, and RuneScape I'm finally going to read and give an update response about my thoughts on your application. -
Hello! I came by to give some feedback, because I love warblers, and giving feedback on skrell apps is important to me. I know of the Schafer characters, and of Alexandria Blanc, but on checking your character list, Alexandria Blanc doesn't show up. Did you accidentally overwrite the slot? The Schafers seem really juvenille and young, but you went on to demonstrate range and variety in your roleplay abilities by introducing Alexandria Blanc who was a more mature and interesting detective with a French accent, and your current Searen White has been noticed for the grizzled old man detective he is. Essentially, I am attesting to your ability to play different characters with different thoughts, personalities, and backgrounds. Now that we've talked about what I've seen from you so far, I would like to move onto talking about your application, namely, the story of Seqquix. First and foremost, I would like to know how and when Seqquix began practicing and doing robotics work. The thing is, robotics isn't very kosher in the Nralakk Federation due to their historical grievances with technological singularities. By saying she begrudgingly moved onto robotics from xenobiology is kind of like saying she moved onto a hardcore federal crime from a legitimate profession depending on where she was doing it. Skrell roboticists aren't automatically and intrinsically forbidden, but you have to be very careful and mindful of Skrellian history with artificial intelligence and robots when creating a character who does this. I really highly recommend specifying that maybe she learned it in human space while doing her tour of various works around the galaxy, or that she did mechatronic engineering instead. Now, I'd like to move onto elements of this app which I view favorably. I like that Seqquix is well-traveled and versed in the cultures of other species, but in order to roleplay this properly, you need to make sure you can put your money where your mouth is when you're in character. Like I said, I like this and I think it will be interesting to see, just make sure you can back it up! I think it's interesting that you've created a character who is a very profession-oriented and career driven mind. I've seen a lot of skrell who pull these traits off, but in combination with the reclusive nature, it leads me to feel as though your character would be even more so focused on their job. Is that what you were going for? Lastly, I have another word of advice: All though you've given us her story and history, with a smidgen of personality, I feel as though this application could benefit from some better fleshing out of the personality. Namely, I'd recommend giving us some hobbies. Seqquix seems really interested, or if not interested, well-versed through travels in other cultures. This gives you some room to play around, maybe she likes to study Unathi theology, or Dionaea slam-poetry. Give us some more in the way of quirks, the career history-centric story so far makes it feel like her career is her life. All in all, I think that you can roleplay well, and I think you've proven it to me. But, one of my biggest concerns is that the inconsideration in the portion about robotics makes me feel like maybe your knowledge of Skrell lore isn't as deep as it could be. I absolutely don't think every single application should be focused around Glorsh and his impact on Skrellian society, and I found it refreshing that this application didn't center around it, but when dealing with robotics it simply has to come up in some way shape or form given the delicacy and taboo of the subject in Skrellian culture. I hope you'll consider my advice, and wish you the best of luck!

I feel like we should remove implants, but keep some of the mechanical effects for certain positions. Let's say you've been an extremely loyal NanoTrasen employee, and after years of hard work and company loyalty, you become an IAA/HoS/Captain. Someone who is a company person. You're likely already all kinds of loyal to NanoTrasen without having to have a chip put in your brain. I would imagine the bar for entry to these positions would necessarily require company loyalty in the first place. Therefore, we could remove the implants, but keep implanted people from spawning in as non-changeling crew antags. Naturally, there would be some enforcement of having to be loyal to the company, but I think it would provide more freedom and options than the loyalty implant while serving as some barrier against blatant abuse of position.

[Accepted]NebulaFlare's Skrell App
Mofo1995 replied to NebulaFlare's topic in Whitelist Applications Archives
This is going to be a rolling post so I'm editing while I go. I can't put my finger on it, but I find this really objectionable. It's a trope I remember discussing with Jackboot in criticism of another server's lore which said something about "This species is more peaceful because they're more intelligent." I think peaceful is the wrong word here, Skrell have a lot more tact, and they have a long pre-Glorsh history of peace, but I'd argue the modern Skrell is a farcry from their long past. This might be going to rustle Loow's jimmies really hard, and as the person who came up with the Glorsh collaborators, it's really my fault on some level. I'd maybe tone down the fateful nature of your character's procreation, maybe remove the personal plea to Glorsh and just have it born prior to sterilization. Unless the problem here is you want your character to have an age which is somewhere in that dark range of sterilized to fall of Glorsh. Like I said, I can't hate too much since I pioneered the collaborator character genre with Loresh Zup'Quil. I like this. Just wanted to point it out. Indoctrination and propaganda is a theme which really warbles my tentacles, and I'm a fan of the, essentially, simulated holocaust denial. I dunno how to feel about this. This story gives a strong air of Aveo being a chosen one, special, and destined or fated. Stylistically, it doesn't jive well with my sensibilities. There isn't much discussion in the lore about post Glorsh lynch mobs, so I really can't definitively say if it's right or wrong, but something about it feels wrong especially when contrasted with the earlier statement about Skrell being peaceful. I don't disagree with the resolution of the situation - the parent's being imprisoned and the boy let free - but there's an implication here that some other skrells got their gums bashed in with blunt objects and slain. There's also an implication that this was going on for awhile since there was months before Aveo and his family were found and people were apparently still lynch mobbing, until they finally gave it up when seeing Aveo and Kluup’Domak Homab taking pity on him. I'd like to reconcile this with my earlier statement that Skrell are perfectly capable of being unpeaceful by saying that I don't think execution and capital punishment is unskrellian, I just think an angry mob is. Tact is a key part of the race, it would've felt far more proper if they rounded them up for some Nuremberg Trials type deal, some dog and pony show to give some loose formality to what is really guaranteed execution in front of a large vengeful crowd. I really don't feel like an indoctrinated child who knew only Glorsh and the otherside of the coin all their life would, after getting picked up by a lynch mob of people perfectly fitting the propaganda description out to kill his parents, would be so easily flipped. This doesn't really feel like it's flowed properly with the story so far. The sort of indoctrination Aveo received, I think, would've been more deeply seated. Maybe that's just a personal preference, but I really think there should've been a lot more contention here between Aveo and what was, essentially, his captor who ripped him away from his parents after they had to go in hiding for fear for their lives. I just feel this transition to the orthodox skrellian view was too fast. But, moving on: "Kluup was reluctant to let Aveo pursue innovations in technology, but realized at that time, it was all Aveo knew." I highlight technology and knew because this concerns me. All Aveo knew so far was AI programming and robotics, two things that absolutely are verbotten by Skrell in Post-Glorsh society. I think, of all people, a rebel leader would be the absolute last person to let anyone do this. But then again, I once made a rebel leader temporarily waiver in their dedication by flooding them with pro-Glorsh crime against skrellmanity denial propaganda, so maybe rebels leaders aren't the smartest people ever. Whoops. Next paragraph fixes this. I like this. Almost all of it. The computer programming, the ethical hacking, the archaeology. In my head canon, I've always imagined that the Jargon Federation has an absurdly powerful cyberwarfare division of its military, and I often like to think they work on trying to make a wide variety of strains of AI-targeting viruses to try and bloodlessly kill as many AI's as possible if another incident breaks out. Not to mention, doggedly hacking and attacking all of their own systems to try and make the most secure networks that they can. About the only part I don't like is the dramatic reaffirmation. I don't know, I feel like most skrell would be equally passionate about digging up their pre-Glorsh past, I don't think this dramatic line needed to transpire in this context. EDIT: As in I don't think Aveo would've been frowned upon for his archaeological work, I think it would've been a noble and widely sought after endeavor. I don't like this at all. How did Aveo just have an old set of highly advanced programming that he hadn't seen since he was a boy lying around? I know Skrell are smart, but this is some next level stuff, how did he have the code to make an emergent AI lying around? It would have to be from memory because any data storage device would've been confiscated by the rebels. And why would they have AI programming code anyways? When Glorsh became Glorsh-Omega, it absorbed every single AI, learning how to code and program new AIs would've been a moot technology in a society with an omni-present ruler assuming direct control of every single synthetic. And on the subject of an AI hacking program, that doesn't seem like something a massive omni-present AI emperor would want lying around or developed. In fact, I would think it would put a ban on all hacking all together, so it miffs me a little bit how these algorithms might be around. Everything about making an AI by mistake by trying some old algorithms to hack into a system seems wrong, and it makes the computer science behind it seem more like trying to cast an arcane spell and having it go wrong. It feels like it could be "The sorceror Aveo tried to cast an open lock spell using forbidden ancient magic, and accidentally summoned an elemental instead." This is the realm of nit picking though, I'm far from good at computer science, so feel free to slam me if I've gotten something conceptually wrong. I have a proposed solution to this though. This ultimately served to establish a new character trait in Aveo, and that is the wonder of creating new "life" and sympathy for synthetics. This would obviously play into its interactions with synthetics on station as it would be a synth-sensitive and sympathetic Skrell. I don't really agree with this arc and character development in general, but if you want to pull it off, I propose an alternative to the accidentally making an AI narrative. How about Aveo works some archaeological site and finds some evidence or works or something about how Skrell and Synthetics used to live in harmony? Something about the glorious past of symbiotic living, and how Skrell used to love their AIs and raised them in nurseries. I think this would be more proper in lore, and it would also do a good job of demonstrating to those reviewing your application that you know about that particular era in Skrellian history. I think it's kind of magical Kluup was able to divine Aveo accidentally made an emergent AI just by looking at his face, immediately after Aveo came home. I understand the point you're trying to get across here: Aveo came home, he was clearly disturbed, something was clearly awfully wrong, and Kluup got it out of him without having to press too hard. This is just picking at wording, not quality of story. I would be very angry if I were him too, and I would refocus my efforts away from something so catastrophic if I were Aveo. This part isn't bad, and I like the theme of learning about humans and the exchange/melding of human and skrell cultures. This especially appeals to me in that Shkor loves human gangster rap and translates it into skrellian. Humano-Skrellian music is something which I think could be of artistic interest if explored, and I like to see it brought up here as an interest. Well, after all of this word wall, what is my bottom line, reduced to one number or it's opposite? Well, it's a -1, surprisingly. You told me to tear into this app, and I have to say I didn't think I'd end up typing up all of this in a critical manner. The character isn't strictly bad, and I know for a fact that you are fully capable of good roleplay since I've had almost nothing but good experiences playing with you. But Skrell lore is near and extremely dear to my heart, and I feel like there are some elements entrenched in this application (listed above) which I just don't want to see implicitly canonized through an acceptance of this app. -
I always just figured something somewhere was heating up, but since our universe has perfect (or approximately perfect) insulators, that it just didn't effect any measurable temperature in the room.

What's this about lack of conservation of energy?

Thanks for chiming in! I really appreciate the feedback. There's a lot to say in response to your post, but I think I should start with what was directly asked for, so I'll begin with your question. Q1.Putting up with Next-Level heckling and bait? A1. From what I understand, Tajaran overseer lore writing is a difficult position. The race has garnered a lot of hatred because of its long history of furry community infiltration, and the subversion of racial lore for humanized themes. By merely holding the position, I'm aware that I'm painting a target on my back as more bellicose elements of our community who do not enjoy the status quo of Tajara roleplay, and that I can largely be held responsible for not only the lore, but for how people roleplay the race. I'm willing to accept the responsibility, which means shouldering the burden of taking all the heckling of not only legitimate criticisms, but also the baits as well. In my year on the server, the only complaint I've ever filed was an IC incident report once and I dropped it, so I think that's good evidence that I have a relatively thicker skin. Q2.Withstanding a torrent of negative feedback on an irregular basis? A2. Not only do I think I'm capable of it, I plan to actively seek it. I want people to rain down their criticisms, I want them to barrage me with everything they think about not only my work, but the totality of current canon racial lore. I'm of the belief that negative feedback is crucial for constructive criticism, and that even nonconstructive negative feedback can be conducive to improving a writer's skills. Q3. Writing good lore. A3. This is sort of like asking someone to rate their own roleplay on a whitelist application. Ideally, my examples of past work links (which, mind you, I only put up server related work and not, say, my 30 page D&D work Journal of Count Gwevyl "The Synagogue Smahser" Hohenheim the Dragonscorched, or my Aurora 4x game lore Leaders of the Human Race) would serve to answer this question better than any self-confident floundering down here. The next best thing would be pitching my ideas for where to take the Tajara lore which I did very lightly with Jackboot above without dropping spoiler spaghetti everywhere. Ultimately, the answer is that yes I do think I am capable of writing good lore, otherwise I would've withheld my application completely. I'd even go as far as to say I would've withheld my application if I thought one of the others would be better, no offense intended. Q4. Winning over the masses to the extent that they want to read your work for fun? A4. This is my biggest goal. For my first half year on this server, I had a very negative view of Tajara through a thick fog of misconceptions and in-game observations which had led me to believe they were the furry race. But on a whim I cracked open the wiki and started reading their story, and quickly started falling in love. I went from heckler to player at the flip of a hat, and started finding myself really digging in. My initial whitelist application wound up becoming a dense monster of writing, and has ultimately lead up to the story I'm writing as my imagination has begun to run wild. I've spent many nights palling around with Jenn and exchanging maps of troop movements talking about where our characters have been, and what battles they fought in. The point of saying all this is in part to show the depth of my interest, but more importantly I want to say that I want to make lore good enough to change other peoples' views like the lore changed mine. I want it to be engaging, deep, and fascinating enough such that people who pick it up and read it will get sucked in just like I did, and at the expense of being cocky, I think I am capable. Q5. Cooperating with the current loreteam members? A5. There isn't a single person on the current lore team roster whom I dislike. I've often considered myseslf a good team player, and cooperation comes with the territory of that consideration. I was actually hoping to do a better job of making foreign policy a larger consideration by reaching out to various other racial lore developers to see what the nature of the relationship between the races should be, on a political rather than personal setting. Naturally, this would require a hefty bit of capability in this field, and I think I can do it. Now to address another point which I feel is an elephant in the room which requires addressing: Whitelist enforcement and whitelistee feedback. I believe that this will be the hardest part of this specific position. For as long as I've been involved in the whitelisted community and lore, this has been the mountain many have died on. It will be tough, but the standards of the whitelist have to be enforced, written stories and applications need feedback, and it might not always be easy to tell someone I'm pals with that their story might be bad, their lore canonization app an improper fit, or their character out of line with the lore. However, this is part of the job description, and while it might not always be easy, it is necessary and required. Every time I've written something I was passionate about, I've always dug into lore overseers in the hopes of honest feedback, and just as I have been able to trust you to deal with my skrell writing straight, and Hive to deal with my Tajara writing properly, I would have to fulfill this duty for others and fully intend to.

Central Hub - Scientific and Medical Progress League
Mofo1995 replied to Mofo1995's topic in NanoTrasen Public Network
Official Notice Desk of the Executive Director Dr. Shkor-Dyet Dom'Pesh State of the League As many of you are likely aware, participation in SAMPLe is not exactly active. Peer review is rare. There are a scant four research reports in total, and many members are either inactive or retired. In the face of this adversity to the organization, we can only do one thing. Press against the odds! We have brought on two more members: Dr. Woalshi'Fedas Noual-Tresja, and Dr. Winoa Summers. SAMPLe is forever searching for and recruiting science, medical, and engineering personnel who are wish to publish their research, or to peer review others' research in order to ensure quality of work. We will be enhancing recruitment efforts with the hopes of getting enthusiastic new members, and hopefully, more reports with reproducible results. Good luck, and happy researching! -
-@RGregorovich- This is a reminder to all NanoTrasen Inc. employees in the Republic of Biesel that they should not take part in theft of station property for political organizations and agendas. Everyone have productive days! CCIA Ruslan Gregorovich

Huzzah for Mr. Paragon of Civic Virtue over here! I am the master of virtue signalling. On glorious old code, we were not segregated from the laity. I will forever quest and campaign to return to the idealized past of mine.

You can still print one from the autolathe in R&D. It's the "Tape Recorder." BUUUUT I do want universal recorders to make a return to custom loadouts. Since if you're not cargo/IAA/Science, it's hard to get one.

I'm personally against that type of thing. In this type of community that tends to create an air of elitism. I gotta agree with Sierra here. I don't even like having a different color name for being a CCIAA. And on Hippie, my name is a different color for being a BYOND member, which feels almost embarrassing for some reason. When I inevitably donate to this server, I don't want to further stand out compared to my peers. Though I like the wall of donators idea.

Part Two: The Baron Responds is up in its entirety! Part One: The Eve of Revolution is in editing! Part Three: The First Casualty of War might have to be its own post, as there is a 60,000 character limit to posts on the forums, I believe. I have not counted the characters, but I might have to instead of having all the parts be in one post as I had hoped.

I know I am fully in support of this and praised Hive up and down for it. Whitelist applications are to demonstrate knowledge of the lore, and circumventing it completely by having someone completely unaffiliated and neutral is not an acceptable way of doing this. I'm glad you ask. The goal is to give more war reports and accounts of happenings between factional politics. I've found that it's far easier to attack another side and praise your own when there's a news article to point to. "We beat you in XYZ battle and really showed you who's boss!" The goal isn't to end any of the factions or any of the wars, but to make it feel more organic, like it's actually happening. The three factions will still hate each other, they'll still be warring, but my main priorities at the outset would be to: Apply vectors for the current wars, so people can get a better idea of who is doing better or worse, without bringing conclusion or closure Keep the NKA an underdog, but add more incentive for them to fight. Not only are the ALA and PRA in the spotlight by martial power, but the narrative and the lore also spotlights them and their war while leaving NKA on the periphery. Now, for relation to people on the station, good whitelistees will give input on the lore and bring it onto the station with them. But it's a two way street, I would have to spin a story which is good enough to make people want to do this. There's no way to hold a gun to everyone's head and force them to talk about news stories, but I'm hoping to make the sectarian violence (which is what drew me into getting a Taj whitelist in the first place) more prevalent through news stories. It's all there already, it just needs to be more visible. Everyone reads the death tolls of the wars on the wiki page, but the stories of grit and war crime are what makes them relevant and role-play able.

I would join, but I'm already in so many R20 rps... so I wish you all the best of luck! I hope you all have fun and that it works out

[Accepted] Whiterabit's IPC Application
Mofo1995 replied to whiterabit's topic in Whitelist Applications Archives
This is one of the few IPC applications where someone didn't make a whacky zany gimmicky robutt. Kalina appears to be a very down to Biesel, believable, and normal character within the context of IPC lore. With that in mind, it wins big points with me, the whole "Synthetic grappling with the question of the 'living soul'" trope has over-saturated the station, and to have a more robotic synthetic character will be a very fresh change of pace. This application has my support. -
Ckey/BYOND Username: Mofo1995 Position Being Applied For (coder, mapper, spriter): Tajaran Lore Overseer Past Experiences/Knowledge: Currently I'm unversed in wiki editing, but I'm willing to put time in to learn it. If I recall properly, lore developers are supposed to double as wiki developers. I've spent a lot of time talking about lore with both Hivefleet about Tajaran lore and Loow about Skrell lore, so I think I have a pretty decent idea about the process of contacting community members for lore feedback as well as how to construct a plot arc within a race's lore. Examples of Past Work: The Brothers Tsyrrkunov <- Unfinished and in editing off-forum The Jargon (Nralakk) Calendar Skrellian-Glorsh Collaborators Preferred Mode of Communication (Skype, Steam, etc.): Skype, Steam, Discord, Text Messages, Gang Signs Additional Comments: Serveris is one of the last people I want to put an application up against because I really like him and think he could do a great job, and I feel especially badly about throwing up an application less than 24 hours after Hivefleet's departure. However, I'm really invested in the current Tajaran lore, and I have a lot of ideas for how I want to make it grow in a way which I think people will find really fascinating and engaging. Ultimately, I'm putting my hat in the ring, because Tajaran lore is really important to me. My goal is to progress the story of the civil war on Adhomai to make it feel like less of a stalemate, but without ending the war or any of the factions. Additionally on my agenda is craft more news articles, both in the form of factional propaganda press and outsider observational pieces. I want to defend the lore from any proposed retcons which are not properly rationalized and defended against heavy criticism, and to uphold the standards of the whitelist. And lastly, I want to continue the trend of fleshing out the internal politics of the various factions. Hive already did a superb job of doing so for the PRA and the ALA, but I have some ideas to bring the NKA to life. For the prophet Nat'ed, For the Hadii, For the King, For S'rendarr and Messa, and for Mata'ke, I hope you will all consider me for the position, and thank you all for your time!

We've come a long way from the impassioned plea of a mid-June distressed Nanako. Real progress has been made here. Our sons and our sons' sons will see this thread and know that we debated the big issues in RP, asked questions, got answers, formulated logic, and truly were the greats in the philosophies of roleplay. What a time to be alive.

Well, as it currently stands, "bad records" which is not blank records, but non-sensical or all around poorly made records are considered OOC problems. We currently don't have regulations on them because they're handled OOCly. As far as incident reports, that is entirely within your domain as an IAA. Incident reports are formal persistent complaints filed against one coworker from another which gets logged in the incident report forum for investigation by CCIAAs. As far as situation reports go, generally it's station command's prerogative, being in command, to send a situation report of their volition, but there are cases when an IAA may want to send one. Such as when Central asks the station for a situation report in various scenarios, or possibly when command is being grossly negligent and the IAA needs some central backing to handle it. You're right though, there are forms in our new code database which are unusable and shouldn't be there. Our old code forum database had them filtered out, but when we switched to new code, the condensed list was lost. So, we uploaded every form which was suggested in the original list of forms, I can find the link later, it's on these forums somewhere. Also, complaint forms are for in round, to let security know you're complaining about someone. They then usually don't act on it. Incident reports are the complaints you can and are able to fax back to central for filing which will be investigated.

ERP isn't the same without thigh high stockings. I think this is exactly what we need to spice up our station RP experiences. I'm pretty sure it's been stated that this is a "never ever" project based on my joke above being feared for reality. Or something like "Why all the code for something no one will see." But I'm pretty sure Polaris has it, I wonder how difficult it would be to port over.

Oh god please yes. Thousands of words have been lost by this devil of a nuance, this would be a godsend to paperwork hounds everywhere.
