bigass sprite rework

Recommended Posts

people told me to make a feedback thread (again, even though i used to do it, and gave up because no one responded)

it's 2019 and aurora is still using sprites from 2003. i'm trying to change that.

keep in mind i'm not the greatest artist and i'm doing this during my free time.

if  you've got a sprite that you're unsatisfied with, or you want to be done just post down below or DM me in discord or here, i don't really mind.

i cannot stress this enough. see some shit in the PR you don't like?  REE at me before it gets pulled.

in the meantime, i'll just be spriting random things here and there. don't expect any rhyme or reason, i'm just doing this for fun.

Dude. That lighter looks sick af. Also, telling gifts from evil gifts apart will really help when Christmas comes. the bots, I don't really care what they look like, it's not something you really pay attention to, but sprucing them up a little will make a nice small change I think. As for the watch. I have no clue, looks cool I guess.

EDIT: Also if you want to work on sprites, could you perhaps do a different sprite for labeled and tagged crates, the tagged crates used to have a yellow outline and it helped you tell which ones were marked, it just suddenly disappeared and its really annoying to redo things when you forget, also adding a small labeled sprite would just help again in a minor fashion, maybe jsut like a white square with some black pixels, but not too worried about it. But the tagged crates is a must since there is no way to tell if they are tagged or not. Saves a lot of frustration.

The perspective on those gifts look very off. Why are they directly facing me? Gives a very flat, book-esque vibe. Tubes, pocket watch and the cleanbot are nice enough though.

Philosophically I disagree with 'sprite is old? change it', as some of the old sprites (pens, toolboxes, AI circuits, SMES and a bunch of engineering-related stuff) were and are fantastic still, and provide a good idea of the game's angle/perspective. I can't stress the importance of sticking to this perspective. The age of 'ugly holdover sprites' ended years ago, for the most part.

Old images that provide good examples of the perspective (particularly the latter image, showing the refinement over the years that led to the game's current style).

The current look is nice, I would suggest building around that art style, rather than attempting to convert the station's aesthetic. Currently, the new bureaucracy sprites are horribly out of place. The pen is ten times bigger, the paper is giant and fat, the paper shredder is nearly the same size as the human sprite. Please try to just make the current look, more nice- not change the whole aesthetic.

100% this. The images I listed above showed a perfect example of refining existing sprites over the years whilst retaining the same style, perspective and spirit.

I have to echo the sentiments about the bureaucracy sprites. The bins are very odd, and while the pens are nice, they're... huge.

The lighter/watch/cleanbot look really nice. I've also enjoyed the grinder sprite. You do good work, but some things seems like they don't fit.

I believe the problem lies in the different styles and perspectives different spriters use.

For example: I feel the bureaucracy sprites are weird due to how they try to incorporate the 3rd dimension, which is something we usually do not see in other sprites, and of course, spriters have their own unique style which is incorporated into their designs.

If we rework alot of sprites, we should look into having set guidelines to the style and perspectives to ensure that the sprites are similar to each other in these regards.
