I don't like this idea at all. It's effectively trying to mechanically enforce roleplay, and while that's fine for an LRP or MRP server, a server branding itself as a heavy roleplay server shouldn't have half of these, like "tourettes" replacing random words with all-caps swear words, or "partial schizophrenia" making an imaginary friend. Most of them don't make any sense from a medical standpoint, and I'm not talking "a neurologist would dislike this", I'm talking "someone who took a life science class in seventh grade would sigh in disbelief". A "complete separation of the lobes of the brain" wouldn't create split personalities, for example. Honestly, I don't think this fits the server at all. Maybe someone else disagrees, but as it stands, I don't think this should be added. (In case it wasn't clear, this is a vote for dismissal, though I suppose since it's already got a PR that won't do anything.)

As it stands, I don't see an issue with this suggestion. The argument of "consistency" when it comes to spell words makes no sense; even when word research for cult was still a thing, they weren't consistent. Besides, why does it matter that the arbitrary nonsense or reference words are the same between rounds? Most of the time they're whispered, like with knock and other stealthy spells, so I don't see how it would matter, anyway. In fact, chaplains can already make their own religion and religious texts, so this has precedent in mechanics. And please, stop with the non-sequiturs in suggestions. It's immature, and we should all try to be better than that. That goes for Pacman, Noah, and Butter. Don't derail threads, and don't just say "I like/dislike this" without providing constructive feedback. There is no need for feedbackless plus or minus ones, because the quality of the suggestion and the reasoning behind it are what I try to take into account, not the number of posts. I'll see how they're currently handled when I get home before I commit to anything, but as it stands this seems like a trivial addition that I'd be happy to implement, barring any objections from other devs or staff.

I'm pretty sure there's a PR on Polaris that adds modular laser weaponry. Might be worth a look, if not a direct port. If it's not a PR yet, I can still get the source code for it. I'm sure the sprites are also able to be used.

Intergrated Circuits - A Guide to Space Age Electronics
MoondancerPony replied to Ornias's topic in Guides & Tutorials
A better idea is to append it to a list. That way, you don't waste space. But then you can't go all super fancy schmancy tech guy and take out the chip, look at it and hand it to a forensic tech or something A better idea is to have a large screen on it, unless you want it to be secret. You could also put the list on the chip... -

They can also be used to record conversations with enough memory sticks and some timing circuits (Or a machine full of memory sticks and a recorder with a subspace transciever) A better idea is to append it to a list. That way, you don't waste space. -
Intergrated Circuits - A Guide to Space Age Electronics
MoondancerPony replied to Ornias's topic in Guides & Tutorials
A way to add more processing capacity to a drone chassis is to offload most of it to another machine, and link them with subspace transmitters. I also want to emphasise what you can do with microphones. Universal translators, subspace phones, etc. are all things I've done. -
[Accepted] Nikov's IPC Whitelist Application
MoondancerPony replied to Nikov's topic in Whitelist Applications Archives
This application seems promising, but I have a few questions. Mainly just to sate my own curiosity, since this is going to be a +1 anyways: 1. Wouldn't a crew member dying to a fire result in legal liability? Assuming people file lawsuits, IRs, etc. if corporations act against their 'good', wouldn't this result in your IPC acting just like a normal person would? 2. How are you going to deal with those who want to, say, arrest you for neglect of duty for doing what you describe in that post? While your reasoning is solid, especially for the character, it can be frustrating to deal with officers, etc. that refuse to recognise it. Either way, this is a solid +1 from me. I can't wait to see the character. (you also get bonus points for mentioning utilons in your post, yay) -
[Accepted] sdtwbaj Head of Staff app
MoondancerPony replied to sdtwbaj's topic in Whitelist Applications Archives
Given my interactions with Dreidos recently, as well as with Marcus and Harriet, I think sdtwbaj would be great for a Head of Staff position. They work well with others, can do their job, and roleplay well. Also, I remember roleplaying with some of their older characters from when they first joined, too, and that was a blast. Overall, +1 from me. -
I'd definitely want this. I might someday actually write some. (((NOT SMUT YOU HEATHENS.)))

You can loyalty implant IPCs already. See: Shell Heads of Security.

Part of this is an out-of-character shift in how I want to play Ferrin. She wasn't true to her character when I played her as incredibly reclusive and acerbic, so I decided to change that. But there's also an in-character aspect. Given the increasing use of machines and robots in research, for telescience calculations as well as xenobiology. She's worried that if she doesn't expand her skillset and influence she'll be made obsolete and forgotten, which to her is the worst thing that could happen to her. One way to prevent that is to have a Command position, where she can teach others while also adding to her own knowledge. Another in-character reason: given debt and various other things, she's not doing too well financially. Her interests in a Command position aren't entirely altruistic; she could really use the pay increase.

BYOND key: MoondancerPony Character names: Tanya Robinson, Ferrin Sytes, Monica Huntington, Robert Huntington, Ryann Ford, Susan Ford, Susanna Callisto, Lysander, Hadley Bishop, Assister, ResearchMate 2459, HI-A 2238, Abigail Smith, Sunshine, Gaea/Blaire Baker, Maxwell Turner How long have you been playing on Aurora?: Since about July of 2016, so about 14-15 months. Why do you wish to be on the whitelist?: It's been over a year now, and despite having several characters that are command-oriented, I've yet to apply for a Command whitelist. Why did you come to Aurora?: It was the first SS13 server I played after learning about the game, and the lore and medium-to-high roleplay made me stay. (Also, I'm staff now. Huh.) The community is also great, despite how diverse players' opinions, beliefs and backgrounds are. Have you read the Aurora wiki on the head roles and qualifications you plan on playing?: Yes. Please provide well articulated answers to the following questions in a paragraph each. Give a definition of what you think roleplay is, and should be about: Roleplay is, essentially, stepping into someone else's shoes for a moment, even though that person doesn't actually exist. It's about acting appropriately to the character, developing meaningful friendships (or enemies), relations and interactions between characters, and creating a narrative involving your character. What do you think the OOC purpose of a Head of Staff is, ingame?: Heads of staff have a huge responsibility of driving the round. In rounds with antagonists, they serve as the crew's leadership in dealing with whatever is happening, and in extended rounds they keep the shift interesting and under control. They also serve as an example of roleplay, character design, and behaviour. If a player is new to the server, then should help them acclimate, both in-character and via LOOC/OOC, for things that need to be explained OOCly (such as UI interactions, 'click this' or 'use this verb'). What do you think the OOC responsibilities of Whitelisted players are to other players, and how would you strive to uphold them?: Whitelisted players are supposed to be the example of an ideal player (or at least close to it). They need to be well-behaved both in and out of character, and on and off server. They have to be respectful and understanding, and not doing this could possibly lead to a warning, whitelist strip or ban. Players should strive to be the same quality as players with head of staff whitelists, and whitelisted players should strive to be an example to those who, perhaps, aren't quite there yet. Please pick one of your characters for this section, and provide well articulated responses to the following questions. Character name: Ferrin Sytes Character age: 33 Please provide a short biography of this character (approx 2 paragraphs): Ferrin Sytes was born on Biesel in 2426, to a middle-class family in Homewood (District 5 of Mendell City). Her parents were employed by NanoTrasen as researchers following the discovery of phoron in the Romanovich cloud, and encouraged her to pursue a career in science. Despite some initial struggles regarding her abrasiveness, she eventually entered a program for gifted students and excelled in her classes, specifically physics and biology, and eventually got a merit scholarship to the South Selene University of Biomedical Science, where she got a BSc in biology and a Masters in genetics. However, the Second Great Depression hit her family hard when she was a few years into her PhD in xenobiology, and she had to balance a job, taking care of her aging parents, and schooling. Eventually, her parents passed within a few weeks of each other, and she took a year off of her schooling to deal with it. When she returned to schooling, the academic landscape had changed drastically following the creation of state-of-the-art research stations such as the NSS Aurora I in the Romanovich cloud, and she struggled to find a place. When she eventually got her PhD, she had about a year to get used to the status quo before the discovery of 'slimes' shook the field, and she was hired to the NSS Exodus. While working on the Exodus, she suffered an accident in Xenobiology, was cloned, and subsequently transferred to telescience until she could transfer back to the Xenobiology department. Approximately a year passed, during which the Exodus was decommissioned and she was reassigned to the NSS Redemption for xenobiology research, before she felt ready to go to the NSS Aurora and take a leadership role. What do you like about this character?: While having a diverse range of skills, she's not too strong in any of them. Her skill in Xenobiology is tempered by her unwillingness to work with slimes, and for ethical (and practical) reasons she can't do genetics experiments on the Aurora. However, this doesn't mean she can't apply her knowledge; she has plenty of theoretical knowledge, as well as the ability to instruct and help others. What do you dislike about this character?: I feel like I'm unable to characterise her properly in the way I picture her in my head. She either comes across as too casual or too rude, instead of striking the balance of formality and bluntness reminiscent of, say, Susan Calvin from Isaac Asimov's stories (which is what I'm aiming for). What do you think makes this character fit to be a head of staff?: Ferrin is knowledgeable in her fields and has plenty of academic experience, as well as experience working under others. She understands the chain of command, as well as the responsibilities of the Research Director aboard the NSS Aurora. Additionally, while she may be abrasive sometimes, she's never caustic or rude; at most, I try to make her truthful but blunt. However, that's not to say she's tactless; she acts professional in professional situations, especially when dealing with superiors. Please provide well articulated answers to the following questions. How would you rate your own roleplaying?: This question isn't one I particularly enjoy answering in applications, but I'll try my best. I've come a long way, but I definitely have room to improve. I'd say that, out of ten, I have a solid seven and a half. Extra notes: I've been delaying this for far too long.

This should probably be written down somewhere. Bug CakeIsOssim about it? Or one of the wiki maintainers.

Just a side note. MMIs remove your memory, permanently. Plugging a brain into an MMI to interrogate them does not work.

As well as some others. Tanya Robinson (inactive) Ferrin Sytes ResearchMate 2459 Sunshine Gaea/Blaire Baker Monica Huntington Robert Huntington Ryann Ford (inactive) Susanna Callisto (inactive) Alex Callisto (inactive) Hadley Bishop Maxwell Turner (this guy, this guy's cool) Tell me what you think about any (or all) of these people.

Feedback: Faysal Al-Shennawi and Sslazhir Yinzr
MoondancerPony replied to Alberyk's topic in Character and Concept Feedback
Where's that one Cargo human you said you would play when Newmap came? But, er, seriously, though? Yinzr is a professional officer. Does his job well, doesn't let "MUH HONURRS" get in his way but is still roleplayed properly. Faysal and his harem of catgirl 'clerical assistants' are also great, just saying. I should totally make a whitelist app just for that. -
-1. Pacman memes too much. But seriously, though. Pacmandevil produces good quality code and has an enthusiasm for developing. Those two things combine to make a good developer. Also, I can't wait for firing pins to be completed as part of your inevitable trial. +1 from me. (Maybe just cut down on the memes a bit.)

[2 Dismissals] Nerf Frag Grenades or Frag Grenade availability.
MoondancerPony replied to JKJudgeX's topic in Archive
One suggestion per thread, please, Kaed. Even though that's a legitimate suggestion, it should be posted in its own topic to get the attention it deserves. Anyway. Given that there is an upcoming frag nerf in the development branch, I don't see a reason to keep this thread going. Voting for dismissal. -
This seems interesting, but I'm not sure if it's a good idea. Maybe it could be trialed? I'd also LOVE additions to NTSL, as I seem to be the only one who uses it. It's incredibly useful for, say, coordinating information between channels with a broadcast command, and not having a common channel would make that incredibly useful.
-
Waaaaugh, this happened last time! See you soon, hopefully. Good luck with college, classes, and your research, and I can't wait for you to come back!

Science starts off with testing firing pins that can be fired in Research/a testing range only. I feel like the execution of this suggestion thread was botched, honestly. I feel 'depth of gameplay' should have been the selling point and 'less validhunting' a sidenote, instead of the other way around. I like the arguments for depth of gameplay, including DNA-locked firing pins, code-restricted firing pins, and adding firing pins to departments other than Research. (Mining, anyone?) I don't like the personal attacks against people who disagree with the suggestion, as their concerns are quite understandable. I feel like this could be given a trial run on the server for the standard few weeks to a month and then we could decide whether or not to keep it.
-
I'm sort of changing my mind on this. It still has problems, namely for antags that don't have uplinks. HOWEVER. Lohikar mentioned possibly adding custom firing pins that are incorporated into the Integrated Electronics port from Polaris Lohikar is testing. In my opinion, that's a great idea, and I'd like to see it, assuming the issue with Revs/Loyalists not being able to easily get uplinks is solved. EDIT: Dreamix, a bulk metal crate is able to be ordered from the engineering orders menu. Nothing to do with mining, and it's more of a general statement about how terrible some Cargo players can be, which I agree with.
-
It will only hinder people who want to use them legitimately. In cases where people are going to abuse them, they'll either exploit/break it or find something else to abuse. This is an administration/player problem, not a code problem, and this is definitely not a good solution for it.
-
I don't think I have anything else to add to this, this is basically all I have to say. Ahelp it if it's a problem, I don't believe this is necessary or a good mechanic.
