[Accepted] DatBerry's Unathi Whitelist
Superiorform replied to DatBerry's topic in Whitelist Applications Archives
I don't really see what is snwoflakey about this, other than perhaps the father going guwandi on the spot, which seems a bit... excessive. But... fucking yes - a guwan who actually deserved to be guwan and won't just be pitied and befriended. He can be hated, he can be loved... I can't wait. OOCly, DatBerry is excellent, but I can't really say much ICly, because I hardly interact with his characters. That said, the few interactions I have had are positive, and Oster is an actually helpful assistant. +1 -
Server Culture and its Effects on RP and Power Gaming
Superiorform replied to Bygonehero's topic in General
I think a really big problem with this is we see heads of staff doing this. Not to name names, but I feel this is especially prevalent with CMOs. They know chemistry when no chemists are there, virology when a virus is on station, and surgery when someone breaks a bone. When we see heads of staff powergaming, we begin to powergame too. I had not even realised the issue was so prevalent, but now that it is brought up, I can see that it really is. This right here, I think, is an amazing solution. We could get the same for destructive analysers and robotics? I sorta pretend that my character is manually analysing the tech with the DA, and then creating a blueprint that is slightly better than the last. I'd like to see flavour text when something is destroyed that it looks like the scientist is working and concentrating very hard, or in robotics, that the roboticist is making lots of precise welds and cuts, and doing complex wiring. Maybe even for engineering too? -
Paul Bird's Tinfoil Wrapped Station Bounced Radio
Superiorform replied to Kirk's topic in Denied Apps
Realistic vs believable. Eh. I could believe that. -
I have played with Sophie Rifler quite a bit, and, while at the start it was obvious the player was used to LRP, I noticed a rapid increase the in the quality of the character, and I really enjoy playing with Rifler now. The feedback thread is amazing. It shows that Shodan can take criticism maturely and confidently, and actually use it to improve, she definitely has after the thread. Finally, I really love your answer about OOC responsibility: driving the round, not immediately shutting down antags, and making it fun for everyone with your power. I think you answered it perfectly. I do have one concern, and that is... why Sophie? From what I have seen of her, I wouldn't have thought of her as the type to accept a loyalty implant, or to be first in line for promotion. So I would like to know, how would she feel about literally being forced to benefit NT, rather than necessarily the crew (resources), her friends (resources), and herself (resource). Sometimes sacrifices must be made... for NanoTrasen. And why was she up for promotion first, given her past behaviour and young age, and seeming lack of much time with NT (You don't give a number on her years with NT, but it seems like she wouldn't have much time with them, according to the backstory.) Overall, definite +1 from me, but I'd like to see my questions answered please.

As someone that was thinking of applying for unathi, and intent on making a Maraziite inquisitor type character, I'd love to see this in the custom loadout section.
-
If you did your research you'd see that's something that was addressed in a player complaint and something I have ceased doing, on staff recommendation. My mistake. I have not read your player complaint, I... didn't really have much reason to. Maybe because you don't make pleasant characters yourself? There's nothing wrong with that, and I'd definitely love to see more Jake Lawrenson, but if a few sour IC interactions are enough to sway your opinion OOCly then you really need to learn to differentiate the two things. I do not mean pleasant as in they were meanies ICly, I am fine with that, I love IC dicks. My problem is when a character is a dick ICly in a way that makes it unfun OOCly. In my opinion, Adolph is not a fun character. For you, at least. I think I'm doing fairly well with most people. Mixed reception, and yes, this is my personal opinion. Because it's not a popularity contest, it's a matter of competence, and it's silly to think Central would be so involved in the day-to-day of their low level employees to seriously consider popular opinion. Haven't you ever worked under a manager, supervisor or any other authority figure that you and your friends absolutely despised? Yeah, it happens. Central is hardly going to sit down and think to themselves: "well, x and y don't like z, so z despite being competent and capable shouldn't be given this position" I am sure personnel would be promoted based on performance, and if somebody is considered unlikable, even the big guys at CC would know. Leadership is an important quality. At any one time, at most, there are 40 people on the exodus. 10(?) in security? It's not a massive company building where the people promoting will never have spoken to the person being promoted. Adolph. Not me. I'm not my character. And I've already explained that particular reasoning. Some heads have a nasty tendency to think they can override standard procedure and/or regulations. Adolph doesn't allow that. Alright, I should have said"you play Adolph going against command a lot, and before I see you in a command role, I'd like to see you play a character that can actually follow the chain of command like someone who does not want to be fired." Uh, okay? Unless it's OOCly me? Correct me if I'm misinterpreting this, but is this a critique on me or the character? Both. 39. I'm starting to wonder if you actually read the app. There's a page of qualifications on the wiki where they list years to obtain degrees and unless I made a mistake somewhere with my math, the numbers add up. He could be both, but why? I have not looked, so sorry if you have answered that somewhere, but I am sure this topic has been thoroughly discussed elsewhere. I sincerely hope you're not basing this off only what your characters would want. Like I said, being able to separate IC from OOC is a valuable skill to have. I am basing this off what my characters would want for reasons I just detailed. Maybe you could be good in command, but I would like to see you play anyone but Hammerstein before you play command. In a station with only 40 people on it at once, what other chars think of your char would affect whether he gets promoted or not, and OOCly, I don't think he is fun.
-
The application is a-ok, nothing to comment on there. My question is how well will you abide by it? Are you just going to condescend to new cadets as you condescend to the officers? Are you going to powergame as I have heard of you powergaming as warden, and doing RnD as a roboticist?I cannot think of a single pleasant interaction I have had with your charterac that has been more than a few sentences long, and whilst I understand the character might just have a toxic personality, he is unfun OOCly too. Why would Hammerstein, of all people, so hated by his coworkers, be promoted to HoS? You also go against command a lot, and I'd like to see you playing a character that follows command (unless it's OOCly you), before trying to play command. Maybe try playing a timid, subservient character? Idk Why is he a roboticist too? He is like, 30? How does one gain the qualifications for both robotics, and being a warden, and why? I really have to give this a strong -1, sorry. If I were you, I'd try making a new character that is a nicer person, and see how it goes. My chars wouldn't want Hammerstein as HoS, and I don't want Hammerstein as HoS.

I'm glad you made this thread, because you told me you were going to make a head app, and I was going to DM you, asking to fix the stuff that has been brought up. I'm glad I didn't have to put a -1 on the app. You are showing a really good attitude here, looking at each criticism, saying what you did wrong and how you will fix it, but you don't just roll over, and make reasonable counter-arguments when you do disagree. Definitely bring this thread up when you make your head app. Also, take the too much antag comments seriously. Don't let Rifler become Humblin.

[Accepted] AWPen Unathi application
Superiorform replied to AWPen's topic in Whitelist Applications Archives
All of your app seems fine to me, and I very much like the backstory. An unathi that has had a long, full life, wrote it all down, is a bit of a thinker, and now wants to settle down. Love it. I have one problem though... why does a 76 year old unathi want to be a security officer of all things? He is 76! I think it would be far more fitting for this character to be a much more relaxed role. I won't make suggestions, because I know very little about him, but I would definitely suggest nothing sec related. -
One of the newer captains on station, Viatorem is the laid-back, charming (hopefully), captain from the frontier, just trying to make the most of his luxurious life. How have your interactions with him been? Also, if you have any feedback on Lawrenson, Latham, or Tilton, feel free to post it.
-
I'm 50/50 on Sophie right now. Your roleplaying has most definitely improved, to the point where I would consider you one of the better RPers here. However, it seems that she is almost too brash, and willing to completely defy command on a whim, and while that sort of thing is fine, you should be RPing it out a lot more than I have seen you do. Especially when I was the captain, wanting some changelings secured to send to CC (for the OOC purpose of possibly allowing them to escape and continue antagging) and you just wanted to... space them. It seemed incredibly validy. There are a few more instances where I feel you were a bit validhunty, but your play as an antag is very good. You do not gank, you roleplay very well as an antagonist, and I have enjoyed all of the rounds where you have played antagonist, so props to you on that. Overall, Sophie is fun, but perhaps could tone down or develop further the defiance of command.
-
I like the backstory, it is interesting, believable, and detailed. However, you say he had worked for NanoTrasen for 5 years, and I believe you need 10 years experience with NT to become a head of staff. Another issue with the character, in my opinion, is you changing his personality every round. I'm not sure this is a good thing in a HRP server. Perhaps you could come up with some sort of IC justification for this type of behaviour. I fully agree with all of your other answers, and I would like to see head whitelisted players with that attitude. I can't say I've seen any of your characters, but I am BST, so that's probably why. Definitely a +1 from me, but please clear up the minor issues I mentioned. Good luck!

[Denied] AWPEN Head application
Superiorform replied to AWPen's topic in Whitelist Applications Archives
I'll have to echo what has already been said in that the application feels bare bones and rushed over. When question is not even completed, and the backstory is more of a description of his personality. It is clear that the backstory has not been checked, either. As for Assim, I have to agree that his roleplay is good. But I have seen a few times now where he does seem really really validy, and desperate for any excuse to kill the antagonist. I, personally, feel that as a HoS, or captain, you should actually be looking for excuses to not shut down the antagonist, especially those that have not shown outright hostile action. (For one example, I was the AI on that round, and I made an effort not to kill you, when I left the turrets on stun while you went around and batoned each one in turn.) So. I think Assim is a good cat, and fun to RP with, but I would like to see this application sorted, and the validy play-style corrected before I could personally trust you in a head role. Sorry, but I'll have to -1 this one. -
[Accepted] Lualyrr's IPC Whitelist Application
Superiorform replied to Lualyrr's topic in Whitelist Applications Archives
I have extensively RPed with Lualyrr, mainly when she is playing Kim Lowe, and all of my interactions with the character have been pleasant. She is an extraordinary RPer. 7/10 is an understatement. She has also RPed a lot with synthetics, because Lowe is a roboticist, and I am very interested to see how well she will do when she is playing the robot. No doubt, she will do amazingly well. The robot itself sounds interesting, and in a sweet spot. My favourite part of the application has to be "I do not intend to play them in an entirely robotic manner. “DSU Vindex” will be able to chat and properly interact, should it be approached and the situation allow it. It just won’t develop relations - be it negative or positive.". I am glad we are getting some actually robotic robots, and this one sounds like it will be interesting to RP with, as if I could ask it a question, and it would try to act humanish, but it is really a cold, robotic response. +1 so many times over. -
Server Moderator Application Basic Information Byond Account: Superiorform Character Name(s): Jake Lawrenson, Cathryn Latham, Alexander Viatorem, Daniel Tilton, a few rarely played chars. AI Name(s): Auntie Marian, Pacificatron (secborg) Preferred means of contact: Discord Age: 16 Timezone: BST (GMT+1) When are you on Aurora?: At least four hours per day on weekends, normally more, and in general, two-four hours on weekdays, though this varies a lot more. Experience How long have you played SS13?: Around 10 or 11 months now. A year now! Amazing! Kill me. How long have you played on Aurora: Around 10 or- since I started playing SS13. I played Goon once, then randomly clicked on this station that said Heavy Roleplaying... and stuck! How much do you know about SS13 (Baystation build) game mechanics?: Very knowledgeable on combat, science, cargo, and medical, but I don't know much about engineering, like wiring and setting up the engine. Do you have any experience moderating for an SS13 server?: None at all. Have you ever been banned, and if so, how long and why?: Not once. 3 day antag ban because I screeched on the shuttle... forgetting that it breaks windows. All responsibility accepted, and I am sorry. No malicious intent at all. Personality Why do you play SS13?: This is a... hard question. What is the draw of a 14 year old, 2D, top down, pixelated graphics, BYOND driven, video game? I think it has to be the radio, top down view, and complex, interactive mechanics that allow you to really get a good idea of what is going on around you, get immersed in the game, and roleplay. I've always liked sci-fi, and sorta semi-dystopian worlds, and NanoTrasen allows dor that quite nicely. Why do you play on Aurora?: The community, it has to be. I like all of the staff, and all of the players. Everyone is friendly, helpful, and the quality of roleplay is very high. It is very rare indeed that I find something that breaks my immersion. Despite this, there is a healthy dose of fun on the server, that is not restricted by uber-realism and I really like that. It seems as if everyone knows what to do to get that nice mix of a tad of silliness, and immersion. Also, antagonists do not feel restricted, and it is rare that I find myself being murderbones, or feeling as if I had an unjustified death. These things happen, of course, but rarely. Antagonist gimmicks tend to be quite fun on this server. What do moderators do?: They sort out any problems that are ahelped, communicating and working closely with the community, the ahelper, and the administration to resolve everything in a timely, and effecient manner. They hand out punishments where necessary, and ask for help and advice from the rest of the team to make sure everything is done correctly, when they are not sure. What does it mean to be a moderator for our server?: To take up the mantle, and the responsibility that comes with being in such a powerful and esteemed role on our server. To take the time to make sure the image of the staff is kept nicely, and to help wherever and whenever help is needed. Why do you want to be a moderator?: I want to help out on Aurora, and give something back, I've spent so much time here that I really feel as if I should help out a little. I also think... and I'll probably be proven wrong rather quickly... I think I might enjoy it. Problem solving and debating are well within my skillset and I think I would enjoy solving disputes between players and helping out. What qualities do you possess that would make you a good moderator?: (This is copied from my previous application. I don't believe it requires editing or changing.) I actually think I possess many of the qualities needed. For starters, I will show why I believe myself to possess two of the qualities Skull mentions in the thread “Trial Moderator Criteria”: Communication: I am part of a debating team, and reached the national semi finals in a public speaking competition. I pride myself on my eloquence and ability to communicate, and actually enjoy debating. Following on from that, I can remain courteous, and I believe I have demonstrated this well in OOC. There was an instance where I was accused of being a bad antag, and some horrible words and names were thrown my way. I did not respond in kind, rather, I called them out on their rudeness, and asked them why they believed I was terrible. I calmly gave my counterpoints and explanations, and not once did I insult anyone. Good Judgement: I always err on the side of caution when taking strong actions, and I believe I have demonstrated this in my play as an antagonist, security, and head of staff/captain. I try to make sure I don’t shut down the round or role-play to fast. I believe this would translate well to me being a moderator. I would not be handing out bans for minor things, or without contacting and informing an administrator. When dealing with someone else’s fun, I would always make sure I do the right thing, and this involves me asking for help. Also, I always try not to get too attached to things in a 2d spessman game. I would definitely stand back and immediately inform someone else if I am part of an issue. I also like to help out newer players. Some people have noted that I often take newer cadets to the holodeck to make sure they understand proper arrest procedure as security, so we have more good security cadets and officers, and I often find myself teaching newer scientists how the toxins chamber works. How well do you handle stress, anger, or insults?: Stress, anger, and insults. Really not a problem to me. When I feel as if I am becoming stressed, I take a few deep breaths, and step back. How can I solve this problem? How bad is it, really? What resources do I have? Time? I can't remeber the last time I have ever got angry over the internet, if ever. Insults? I play Doctor Fate on Injustice 2, people scream at me half of the time I play online. Someone insulting me over the internet is more inclined to make me laugh, but I think I'm above goading people on. Anything Else You Want to Add: I can get salty. I'll admit that. When I feel as if I have been badly done for in-game, I have complained in dsay. I understand this can give a bad image, so I'll stop. Of course, I'd never take any action myself if I feel badly done for when I am a moderator, I would ahelp and ask someone else to handle it. I think I am quite well known in the community, and trusted. A few players have told me nice things about myself, and I really like that. I think I would be a good choice for moderator, because of this. I also reckon I'd have quite a friendly moderating style. Link to my previous app: https://forums.aurorastation.org/viewtopic.php?f=31&t=7766 You will find some comments in suport of me, and my previous interview. This is probably worth taking a look at. I was denied because the applications closed. Thanks for taking a look, and for considering me!

I like the idea of a conscripted rebel fighter, but the backstory is very sparse, and fluffed up. In those two paragraphs, all you have told us is that he is a zhan-khazan cat that was poor, got conscripted, and deserted because he didn't like war. His family? His feelings? Please, develop this. Also, I have not seen your chars in game, and I don't think Aurora ignores its newer players. When I joined, I was welcomed quite nicely, I think.

[Accepted] XanderDoxen's Ban Appeal
Superiorform replied to Azande's topic in Unban Requests Archive
I haven't read the responses from the staff yet, just your OP. You have a screenshot of a discord conversation with me. I'd just like to say that that was very immature of me, and I apologise for it. That is not to say I was not glad that you were banned, just that the way I expressed it was terrible. Sorry about that. I had recently had some terrible experiences with Stamos, and that's why I did it, not that it excuses this absolutely inappropriate behaviour. Sorry again. I am not giving my opinion on the ban appeal, as non-staff, I am not sure I am meant to be posting. I just wanted to apologise, because I was mentioned in the appeal. -
I really like the idea of having multiple human languages, especially as the humans are meant to be quite diverse... but aren't. As has been said, how could I tell the difference between a human from earth, and a human from Biesel? I can't. I think it would be nice to be able to distinguish humans from Elyra, maybe, who might be speaking the Arabic type, and characters with Asian descent, who could be speaking the Asian type. It would be nice for these niche characters to be able to speak with each other in private, whilst the most common type, type A, could still be spoken between most humans, and actually act as a common human language that people actually use. So, mechanically, I like it. As for the lore aspect, I don't really like what you did, but that's more for the lore team than me. Also, gut gutter, and trash tradeband. Plz.

[Accepted] The lancer's head application
Superiorform replied to The lancer's topic in Whitelist Applications Archives
Whilst I haven't ever played with you that I can remember, all your answers his the nail on my head in my opinion, and the backstory looks quite interesting, I think you could really develop it whilst you RP with the character. A +1 from me. -
I like the app, and the backstory is quite good, interesting. For most people I request some extra development on the questions, but I think you hit the nail on the head. It should be noted that Seb is a great example of OOC conduct. When he got valided for no reason as a ling, he didn't complain excessively in dsay, he ahelped, and made a few calm remarks about how poorly the ERT handled it. Also, Seb is excellent at RP. I haven't had many chances to ICly interact with him, but when I have, it has been massively enjoyable. I think he really gets into character, and treats other characters as people. All in all, probably 8-9/10, he is what the community can strive to be like in terms of RP. So, overall, a strong +1.
-
That's a good point, and I will definitely take it into account. I will play as an RD for a while before going into a captain position. As for characters being promoted, my scientist will become an RD, and later on, when I apply for unathi, I will make him an HoS (This won't be for a while, though.). I will also create my captain character, soon. Thanks for the feedback! EDIT: Due to Hollydale being ousted as a Hephaestus spy, he will no longer be becoming a research director. Poor guy.
-
Whilst I don't recognise any of your characters except Becket, who I have recently played a few security rounds with, I very much like this application. The question on the differences of playing an unathi is very well answered, and I believe that you have demonstrated an understanding of the culture here, and even more so in the backstory itself. Again, I very much like the backstory. It is interesting and special, but still very much believable, and keeps to the lore very well, despite the fact that the clan itself is sort of against the status quo. The character you have described again, is interesting, and you have given her a personality, and explained why she has that personality. One criticism: The fact that she suddenly decides to get up and go seems a bit weird to me. This shy, timid, person, suddenly leaving everything they know, and even against the wishes of the clan? How did she leave? Why? Why did the clan let her? For such a massive event, I don't think you have adequately described and explained it in one sentence. It's a +1 as it is, but I would be very happy if you could make a small change.
