  2. To my knowledge, Baka has never conducted herself poorly in OOC and can handle people being rude or nasty without responding in kind. Baka would make an excellent mod.
  3. I voted yes, but I'm actually voting for a compromise. I'm voting for IPCs to be able to take CERTAIN head positions, but not all of them. The irony of an IPC Head of Personnel gives me chuckles. Furthermore, restricting HoP prevents IPCs from assuming Captain-ship in absence of a properly assigned crew member. I can see IPCs being very well adapted to the following roles though, due to the inherently logical foundation of their mind structure;- - Chief Engineer: the memorisation of blueprints, pipe systems, the setup sequence for an engine and general construction methods would be akin to understanding basic biology for a human. - Research Director: the memorisation of scientific principles, theories, historical biological studies, and the application of maths could all be handled simply by a synthetic intelligence with even the most rudimentary database/file storage system. And IPC brains are supposed to be bluespace integrated, plasma core gizmos in 2457. - Head of Security: this position is a lot less about robusting Nuke Ops and more about strictly adhering to and enforcing Nanotrasen regulations and procedures on your own staff than most people probably realize. An IPC could chew through a book of regulations as big as its own head in short order, check for inconsistencies and form those guidelines into a temporary 'lawset' enforced by activating secondary Loyalty circuits. Now what's holding IPCs back from Head status? Prevailing cultural notions of either inadequacy or superiority, in comparision to synthetics. Or to rephrase; the notion that, primarily humans, do not want to be taking orders from the very intelligences that they themselves created. It's Frankensteins monster, only Frankenstein has come home with degrees in several fields of Science and wants to talk to Dr Henry Frankenstein about bluespace physics as an equal. Holding IPCs back will, lorewise, either lead to synthetic rebellions or exile, be it externally forced or self imposed. Sooner or later humanity has to properly come to terms with the fact that it has created a new form of life, a new race, new species, that has become aware enough of itself to start asking the very same philosophical questions that humanity has pondered since ancient epochs. Nanotrasen has to look at what IPCs have to offer their company and decide whether or not now is the time to start trialing IPCs for Command positions, perhaps with the caveat that no IPC can for any reason act as HoP or Captain under even the most dire circumstances or for any period of time. Even if trials prove successful, I doubt we'd see a properly appointed IPC Captain for decades after that.

I've not played a Malf AI, but looking at all the new powers they get (http://www.ss13.eu/wiki/index.php/Guide_to_malfunction), I should think that these are enough to exert control over and terrorize the crew without Code Delta. Also, it's less likely that players will instantly try to come and destroy you if you have to be a little more subtle than NUKE EVERYTHING.

  6. I think this should be changed, in the same way that detonating the Nuke is no longer the objective of Nuke Ops. Malf AI is the only round that consistently doesn't last for the usual minimum of two hours, due to the majority of AIs rushing for Code Delta detonation. Now, the AI SHOULD have something it can threaten the crew with if it gains full control over the station, but not a 'round ends in three minutes and I win' button. Perhaps lifting the restriction of unleashing Singulo or using Atmos as a weapon? Perhaps a smaller explosion that destroys a massive chunk of the station without instakilling everything on it? Ideas, suggestions, hatemail, whatever you want to contribute.
  7. One of the uses of a loyalty implants is that they can be stuck in people who can then be released to continue roleplay, instead of facing brig time alone, if they're compliant. Removing them means more people will be locked up without another responsible recourse. Personally, I think all heads of staff should have mandatory loyalty implants.
  8. As a sometimes Chief Engineer, I'd ask you not to add Welding Goggles. The fact that only the jobs expected to be welding are provided with goggles/masks means I rarely have to worry about someone misusing the welder, because the eye-protection is locked away in the respective departments. EDIT:- Unless you're not talking about Custom Loadouts, in which case ignore me. Karima is great and should get goggles if she wants goggles.
  9. The only relevant lore was that one page on synthetics, which didn't actually mention IPCs beyond the one note in the timeline. And yes, I'm aware that I created a company as my characters background. The character is intentionally new, grown to maturity in a virtual realm and then shunted into a used chassis. Without lore, I was struggling with the question of how an enslaved intelligence would get a chassis. Most AI's and Borgs would probably shutdown between shifts, and spend the majority of their waking time serving the needs of up to sixty people, not goofing off and playing the stock market to siphon funds into their non-existent bank account. I figured someone, somewhere, out in the galaxy would be making IPCs on purpose, but I had to answer the question of why humanity would create 'free' intelligence at all, when the alternative is a safe, serving, law-bound intelligence. I came to the conclusion of a sort of synthetic class system with AIs at the top, and the remaining kernels being split into those that need to be law shackled and those that could probably do without. A chassis is issued, but it's more like a rental than private property, until you serve the terms of the contract. But that's just one company, and not a major player at that. The company is just a plot device that answers the unanswered questions about IPCs, for me.

One of my favorite characters is my Cyborg, but for all their abilities they are limited in other ways, and ultimately they are little more than slaves and quite literally company property. I like to think I've managed to imbue NG-X with a personality of its own, despite his occupation as a company work-puppet. Identify what makes role-playing this species different than role-playing a Human: An IPC is a positronic brain in an articulated chassis. As machines, they mimic organic thought patterns but are stripped of the cumbersome sense of emotion that so often clouds and confuses organics. But it comes at the cost of truly living, as organics would define it, because they are never truly happy, nor sad. Some positronics learn to emulate such things, but it is little more than a clever illusion. The very structure of their minds make them very good at tasks involving logic, mathematics or the endless spirals of bureaucratic law. Conversely, they'd be ideal for menial labor due to their tireless form. Instead of needing food, oxygen and sleep, they're limited by the need for power and the industrial tolerance of their build. Why does this species in particular hold your interest? I have little interest in the other Xeno species, but I've meant to apply for IPC for a while. I get to play with the synthetic perspective, but with a little less mechanical function traded for more personal versatility than a cyborg. While I try to give my cyborgs personality, they always end up feeling like tools. I hope an IPC will feel more like a quirky crewmember. Character Name: Casey Please provide a short backstory for this character, approximately 2 paragraphs ExoCore, a Robotics Corporation operating within the Free-Trade sector, creates a variety of artificial lifeforms. They manage Intelligence farms, where personality kernels are raised in virtual environments. Like children, they start off small and limited. Gradually they are given access to more information, watched and guided as they process the new data and mature. Kernels that turn out to be defective are simply erased. The fastest, most intelligent and stable personalities are gradually elevated to true AI status and sold off to other corporations who then shackle them with safety laws. Those kernels that are not able to manage the massive workload of AI duties are downloaded into a positronic brain and shipped out as androids, fitted to a multitude of service roles. They are largely stable, but usually given into the care and supervision of superior intelligences. Then there are the others, the ones that with the least amount of data processing potential. These few are watched for signs of data corruption before being offered another route out of the server farms. Casey is one of these synthetics, granted a type of existance that 'superior' intelligences will not experience. They are sleeved into a positronic brain and inserted into an unsynced chassis. It is not free, however, and they must then agree to the contract offered; for a determined period of time, a large portion of any earnings are to be siphoned back to ExoCore. This leaves the IPC technically unbound, but with a debt to pay. With low living and maintenance costs, however, it is still a good deal for most... even if it leaves them living in a sort of synthetic poverty, when compared to the earnings of the organics they will encounter. What do you like about this character? Casey will be a representation of how I see IPCS; only slightly better off than an indentured servant. It will have little need for emotional attachments but perform worse than most forms of synthetic intelligence in terms of data processing and overall capacity, suitable instead for largely menial tasks. This provides Nanotrasen a cheap form of hardworking labor, without the guilt and stigma of outright slavery. Caseys chassis will be inexpensive and worn, likely returned to Exocore after a previous user fulfilled their contract or was able to afford an upgrade, but maintained to a satisfactory degree for work. Casey will have no illusions of grandeur or superiority, nor will it attempt to mimic organic methodologies, remaining a simple quirky working robot. How would you rate your role-playing ability? I'd say I'm pretty good, depending on my mood. Sometimes I go into great depth with a characters actions and expressions, other times not so much, but I do my best to play consistent and hopefully believable characters within the setting. Notes:

    Well, I think I'm one step closer to getting it working. Apparently the Telecom servers process all languages as 'Human', even if they aren't, and the variable '$language' is missing completely when it should be a default. The workaround I'm currently trying is to check the $content variable, which is the text of a message, for any instance of ;:4 or any other language modifier and then replace that instance with just ;, to broadcast it over general without the language modifier. The problem is that it doesn't seem to recognize the language codes as part of the message '$content'. Also I can't seem to modify '$source' in anyway, but I can check it.

    Also known as; The Chief Engineers Secret Space Base. And if you thought getting to grips with Atmosia is hard, well, I hope you know how to into code. As you may have noticed, I've been experimenting with Tcom scripts for the past few days. Some of them work, and mostly it's the notoriously bad ones, like HONK and tourettes. I have a simple, selective mute and I have a general comm cleaner that prevents you from hearing Hulks, typing all caps or using profanities. The useful scripts I've tried and consistently failed to implement are the timestamp, job indicator and an auto translator, for when those filthy xenos start screeching their catspeak, warbles and rustles over general comms, but I can't seem to get them functional. I'm told some of the Tcom functions are somehow currently broken, but I don't know which ones. Anyway, if you have any ideas or requests, or scripts of your own to submit; here we are!

My only memorable instances have been engineering accidents. - Overloaded a Supermatter Core within five minutes of round start. - Flooded Engineering with plasma within five minutes of round start. Though I blame that one on button lag. - Heroically volunteer to brave the harsh environments of space as an Engineering borg. Set up containment, activated the Accelerator and stood there, watching as the Singularity grew. Well, borgs don't have magboots. I was summarily EMP'd and pulled into the Singularity. This is the only one that's happened since being on Aurora.
  16. Your offer was 'let me go and I'll help you'. Sarahs counter was 'That's not how this works. You co-operate and we'll be lenient. Do not and we won't.' She can't let you just walk out of helping someone rob the Vault. You can hypothesize on what I would have done, but let me be clear, I always, always, ALWAYS go lenient on prisoners who aren't stubborn and co-operate, LIKE NON-ANTAGS SHOULD. But no-one ever does because they have pre-existing notions of shitcurity. You'd have gotten some brig time and then been released though. I didn't shut it down last round because I spent as much time out of play as you did, either dead or receiving medical treatment. Now and then, I do try to order problem areas shut down to prevent misuse. If there are Captains, I try to go through them. There was not a Captain, or acting Captain. I'm unclear if it's actually against rules IC or OOC for a Head of Security to close down sections of a department that are dangerous and lacking command staff. It sounds perfectly reasonable to me.
  17. Regarding Sarahs impromptu investigation of Telescience that round; she was alerted by the AI, C.A.B.A.L, that people in Telescience were talking about the Vault. It was ICly justifed to go and have a look. That's what I did, and was immediately reported to the admins by Charlie who suspected me of metagaming, when I had absolutely no reason to even expect Charlie to be there. Sarah was responding to information that hinted of Telescience planning to misbehave. As to the arrest of Travis, he was complicit in Charlies high crimes and refusing to co-operate under interrogation. Permanent holding is a valid punishment, as far as I understand. The fact that it sucks to be locked up alone for a long time should have been some kind of IC deterrent for your character and edge him towards co-operation with Security, especially as he was not an Antag that round. I did not intend to leave you in Solitary for so long, but I was taken out of the round for a long time myself due to twice being attacked by loose slimes when searching in Xenobiology. I apologize you were left in there for so long, but you were given a chance to co-operate, and it was your slimes that prevented me from ordering your release, or coming back to try interrogation again. As for shutting down Telescience this round; it, and Genetics, are what I consider dangerous departments that shouldn't be left to run unsupervised due to the potential for misuse. People are OOCly sick of these departments being abused. In character, I've started taking steps to pre-emptively minimize the pointlessly malign actions these departments get up to. If there was an RD, it would be left completely under their jurisdiction, like Genetics has been left completely to the appropriate command staff this round. As of writing this, Travis hasn't even tried to appeal this through In Character methods.

  19. The CSI isn't issued a box of bodybags, so that requires taking them from the morgue and getting the CMO on my ass.
  20. Something else. - Toe Tags There's few things more annoying than having a morgue tray full of Unknown bodies with no way to differentiate between most of them, incase you need to re-examine one of them, and you can't use the Hand Labeller on bodies.
  21. There are many problem points with the revolver. Here are a few that come to mind; - Most detectives will forget to allow movement and item use and shoot the suspect out of reflex when setting a target with 'Aim' mode. - Likewise, few characters treat having a lethal weapon pointed at them with the gravity the situation demands, and will attempt to just run away or attack which leads to them getting shot at least once. - The lack of non-lethal alternatives means the revolver is the detectives only tool for defense, leading to improper escalation of force in most cases. And given the nature of the revolver, unless swift medical attention is administered, the person who's shot will almost always die of it. - Most Detectives that aren't busy show a propensity for alcoholism and thus hang out at the bar and get drunk, while carrying a loaded, lethal firearm. While your character getting drunk doesn't inhibit the judgements of the player controlling them, their judgement should be considered impaired in character. This is why a drunk Detective will almost always get canned if there's a Head of Security worth their salt. What can be done? I don't see any reason for lethal firearms to be issued to a member of the Security force, an investigate member at that. I think if you disarmed them completely you'd remove most of the allure of the role. So, instead, equip them with rubber bullets, a replacement stun revolver, or just a flat out taser.
  22. I just remembered something else. - Privacy shutters. As part of the CSIs job is handling autopsies, a little more confidentiality would probably help prevent information leaking out about dead crew who've been cloned. The medical morgue is naturally sealed off, but the CSIs lab has a series of open windows that let anyone in Sec peer in. Could also be substituted with the tinted windows like the ones you get in Robotics, but you'd have to make sure the entrance windoor doesn't still let you peer right in at the operating table.
