Nearly every input system needs to be coupled with an output system, even if simply for feedback. Security hazard. Information extraction from a loyal human would require fun things, like interrogation, which has the adverse effect of fogging the mind, providing false answers (provided only out of a desire to escape), damaging the subject, perhaps to the point of no recovery. Other means of information extraction carry similar risks. Machines? Lock it, nab it, slave it, done. Bits don't lie, humans can. This is only from a security threat point of view. With that in mind, let's review what positions they would be looked at by higher: Captain -- extremely sensitive information, no-go Head of Personnel -- access to sensitive information, potentially?* Head of Security -- extremely sensitive information, no-go Chief Medical Officer -- general medicine, software hacks can have similar results to an IPC hack, go Chief Engineer -- imprinted schematics, critical systems, potentially a larger threat than a compromised Captain due to the IPC's capacity to retain information, no-go Research Director -- access to sensitive information, potentially?* *IPCs seem better fit for secondary executive and managerial positions, where they simply need to keep tally and distribute, while having someone right above them to report to. Talking about positions such as a Quartermaster, as opposed to being a flat-out Head of Personnel or Research Director. This secondary position would free up the respective head to conduct further development and planning.

[Denied] Schrader's Signature Acoustic Guitar
Skull132 replied to CakeIsOssim's topic in Denied Apps
Instruments create lag. The more they are used throughout a shift, the greater the compound effect (I've used the piano for events before, that's how it goes). I'm not certain I want to add the potential for this type of stress to be added onto the box. -
SQL updates waiting until 12JAN2015, when the finalized versions are up here.
-
Three ways this can go: I add an entire mechanic supporting custom signatures for all. I actually have wanted to do this for a long time now, so maybe. I hack, depending on how the conversion proc works and add a singular exception. May not be possible, and will be silly if it is. Third, neither of the above is doable at this time an will be done at a later date (option one, at this point).

All of these things are actually relatively simple to patch in. One thing I would also like to pop up there is putting a range limit on a belt thing. Basically, it's a lot harder to see you reaching for your belt than it is for you rotating your torso, and getting grabby with your backpack. Let's say, within a 4 tile radius, you see someone going for their belt, if the item is below w_class 3. If it's above w_class 3, you see them pulling it out whenever. For rucks, at any range you see them going for it. Because, again, you basically twist your torso, or move your hands more. Thoughts?

"The 3rd anniversary of the Eastern Syris Massacre."
Skull132 replied to Theplahunter's topic in Character Stories
Right, 4 replies nixed. Can we not have an immature frackfest on the forums, at least, not on this level. We already have enough of these, thank you. Also, Plahunter. Read what Jackboot said. Which I'm going to use as a bit of a bounce for my own line: respect your work, and respect your reader. When I see uncapitalized letters, I'm not going to nitpick and say, "Dude, the word "I" is indicated by a capital letter." What I'm going to do instead is stop reading, and walk away from it. Why? Because the writer couldn't bother himself to move a pinkie to the shift key while typing. So, in turn, I'm not going to feel inclined to be constructive, provide any feedback, or actually even finish the story. Obviously, I made an exception here. Legitimate mistakes are fine. I learn English as a foreign language, I make mistakes. But I make sure that all of my mistakes are committed out of a lack of knowledge, and not because I'm being lazy. -
Instead of what was posted, the easier option would be to add shutters on the lower passageways, deployable with command level access. Would result in a lot less haphazard map editing and make the checkpoint optional. Which it would be, because it's expected everyone gets screened before arrival.
-
Yeah, binning. Too much work on the creation of an intertwining proc for what can be accomplished with me's and consideration.

I'm siding with Tishina. Further more, the specific titles pitched sound completely out of place for a research station and are even more dependent on staff setup than the departmental assistants. Instead of having these, or offering user input, just go and talk to the HoP. No, you can't be a special private detective or bouncer every round that way, but the trade off is the lack of "Erec Bellard, Buttscratcher, has arrived on the station," type announcements. Plus, if we got this, people would start towing the line on what is acceptable, and what is not. Which will cause arguments and the whole charade along those lines.
-
I would say, since there is a player-driven countermechanism at play, to not worry too much about the OOC realism at play here. They no longer have the entire play field to themselves, and have to start paying mind to their moves, lest Serveris and Doomberg catch them by their tails. And, again I would say, that this makes the entire thing much more fun. Staff doesn't have to worry about it too much OOCly, because the two forces will keep eachother in line. And players ICly can have some fun, do IAA work or try to avoid suspicion.

So, let's review the past few weeks. Consider these ramblings the mental trail that I've jutted down for you, so that you may perhaps gain insight into what I consider as right, and what I consider as wrong, as far as my actions over the last month goes. A form of transparent thought, perhaps. I've been here for a year and a half. "Here", meaning Aurora, prior to that I was a player on the previous iteration of the Apollo 17 station. "Here", in my post on the server? For a year, roughly, now. Started with Tool, quickly changed into me, Sphere and Sub, and then back down to me and YeahChris. What have I done in that time? Along with the various staff, we kept this station moving. There has never been a specific goal, a specific point that we've wanted to reach. Really, we've just always wanted to keep the environment dynamic and moving, while retaining a quality of roleplay that was deemed acceptable by the staff. Some people have raised gripes with this, that we're constantly changing and don't stop, "We should have remained small!" No, that would stop being interesting very quickly, movement is life. A dynamic environment with new faces, new features, new moments is something we all can accept as something we desire. If not, then you've come to the wrong place. That is a point I am willing to stand by. Okay, we want movement, we want a dynamic environment where people can apply, do their thing, get removed if need be, given more power if need be. I would like to think that the tools for all of this are here. If not, then let us know. But let's talk about tempo. Tempo-tempo-tempo. I was never one to jump at complaints. Well, that's a double-sided story. I jumped when I needed to, when the proverbial cup had been filled. I pushed matters that needed pushing, and tended to address a situation in public, without the reference to names. Oddly enough, I was stronger worded at that point, I kept less to myself, and was more honest about the following: Back to tempo. We had a slow tempo. "Never expect a knee-jerk reaction." Simple enough to explain: the bad ones would commit offenses and shove themselves out the door for us. The toxic ones would eventually make themselves known and, at that point, me and Chris could just step in, bag'em and tag'em. This is no longer the case, party due to my own fault. I tried pushing a subject that, I thought, was worth pushing. This was a mistake. I butchered my own point, made it into a illegible mess that, up until spending a few days thinking about it, I wasn't even certain about. But I did have a purpose behind my actions. The purpose was fine, to guide and to raise, but the methods chosen were destructive and rash. Simple enough, issue located. Let's fix it, shall we? I'll take a step back and let things run their course, simply guiding them where needed. Obviously this doesn't mean that I'll stop providing input, removing people that generate issues, letting the suggestions forum run unfiltered. That would be neglecting my duties, something that I do not intend to do. But I do intend to change my tempo and tact, perhaps retain better and easier control over the situation. We will see. But what of !FUN!? Well. Let me be perfectly honest here: there is no way to create an environment that is fun for everyone. You can try, but conflicts emerge, and if both sides remain stalwart, even refusing compromise offered by a third party, then something has to give. Someone has to either curb, or leave. Do I have !FUN! on my agenda? What's an agenda? Because, I am quite sure I'm lacking: I've always just wanted to code and stay amused, and really, to see happy faces. What am I seeing? A whole lot of bitching and everyone, by everyone, because of everything. Well, okay, not really. That's a hyperbole, as it is a relatively minor group who stir up the noise. Eh, whatever, they can be until they decide what they want and actually choose to communicate, instead of kicking up dust, and then slamming the door shut when an actual point is discovered. Oh, and let's talk about having an agenda. What is mine? I guess that comes as close to having one as possible. Dunno. Any objections to this one? Full thread here: http://auroraserver.freeforums.net/thread/805/community-head-developer Otherwise, dunno, I'm done for the night. Rest easy, and get the fuck back to playing your 2D spess.

Arrrrivalls... Not the best place to detonate a welder tank. Generally speaking, any damage to the arrivals area should be avoided, or at least made in a fashion where the shuttle itself is left habitable and a chance to escape is present. If it were south, where the external shuttle docks are, then it would have been fine; but as it stands, I assume it screwed the new arrivals over majorly, potentially even depressurizing the arrivals shuttle itself. But, the point appears to be understood, so I'm good with letting you back into syndies.

A blazed trail, a single misguided step, a mechanical click as the wire is released, and an explosion. Tainavaa, this is what you get. This single unprofessional step to undermine everything you're not seeing. You're not seeing the orders for staff to hold their fire against Jawdat, despite him playing Tajaran HoP. You're not seeing the orders for staff to hold their fire against the Jawdat family, despite the existence of a fully fledged criminal syndicate aboard a station monitored by AIs, where everything is recorded and saved, sounding ludicrous. Orders partly issued by me. Orders issued under the consideration that the investigation and whatever illegal activity around the Jawdats can be !FUN! for people. And ultimately, these weren't even the issues in question that made me call out their names. My mistake is more human in nature than you believe. What you read was unprofessional, yes. But it was a prediction. I'm ultimately too tired to chase after people right now. And I'm about to have less time than I already do: the American timezones for play are out of my reach, have always been. I apologize. My move was unnaturally poorly calculated, and one to throw names at an issue that required none. I spoke a bastardization of the realistic image, without consideration given, in an attempt to quell, affirm, and sate. As a leader, I failed to utilize the tools at my disposal for proper execution of a task: my selection was poor and unnecessary, my actions reflecting in that decision. It is one that I cannot stand by, despite the pretense for me doing so existing.

I needed to trace the buckle code for simple_animals to make sure that mice can't be buckled into anything anymore (or lizards, for that matter). It's one of those things that gets intertwined and intermingled just about everywhere. A tired head is telling me how this sit function could be accomplished, but it'd be so much code duplication, or a sheer amount of modification to existing procs, objects, mob files that I don't consider it as something that's worth it.
-
The two xeno heads of staff that I am actively tracking are Jawdat and Uaekis. Both of them are troublesome, and I, frankly, expect both to be eliminated from the command roster within the next month. If not through IC means, then through OOC means, due to how ridiculous it is becoming for, at least Jawdat, to hold a command position. So, the argument is valid. However. The argument is misdirected. We are not discussing individuals here. Individuals out of bounds will be eliminated in the long run, as they being targeted right now. We are discussing IC and OOC groupings, mixed together, which does not make for a good result. OOCly, it might be true that some players of the IPC races, like Inverted, are more level-headed and less edgy 2kewl4u than Covert and Jackboot. It does not mean that we should whitelist a race just on these grounds, and unwhitelist a race or two. It simply means that we remove Covert and Jackboot from the command roster.

As a point, if the janitor stumbled onto a confrontation, I have no issues with him tossing a cleaner grenade or two at them. But at that point, he should probably just use the distraction to run the fuck away, instead of getting in close and personal, flashing them and removing their headset. The former is self-preservation. The latter is idiocity which should be punished by death, but given the circumstances, was not (Rarely is, but it can happen, when people try to robust the nuke team and the nuke team just steamrolls over all of them because they were stupid).

Kiwi, in your opinion, was the conduct of Apophis appropriate for the situation or not? From what I understand, he was not acting under orders from you to arrest a fellow security officer, instead he elected to do so of his own initiative. Obviously, do correct me if I am wrong. For clarification: I'm not really interested in the excessively long brigging, as circumstances can, and I do believe did, waive that. What I am interested, however, is the potentially uncalled for arrest of a fellow officer, while enacting the order of a commanding officer. Oh, and of course, I'm curious as to what Kingmatt9, the player of Apophis, has to say about the whole deal.

[Processing] Dr. Crane's Vibrating Blue Squirrel
Skull132 replied to LordFowl's topic in Completed Items
Hi, I'm starting to swing around this place again. And I noticed this. Initial thoughts: Errr, what. After reading the thread: Errr, no? After more consideration: Errr, maybe? Okay, this is an odd one. I kinda agree that we should have whacky things approved, just, simply due to the nature of the game. And, I mean, come on. This is a small little trinket that's not on the level of, "Oh, I have an earring of someone's tail!" yet. So maybe. Out of curiosity, Lord Fowl, why would you like this item OOCly? As in, why apply for a weird blue squirrel, instead of something else? -
Ban lifted. Enjoy your game.
-
I'm willing to lift this. I'll give it 24 hours, and if there are no complaints, it'll be lifted.

Am I going to need my decoder/encoder again? Because, this was glorious: http://gyazo.com/0a66c2a9e34ec64883ad6f5c6bd70344 Also, welcome back, Nebula.

The game has a "Player Notes" system built into it. Basically, for every CKey ingame, there is an associated list of notes. We can review these at any time, really, or add to them.

Hello, A subforum for Heads of Staff to discuss matters on has been created. Due to its nature, it is currently locked away behind a forum group that everyone with a Head of Staff whitelist should have access to. However, I cannot be certain that I added everyone. If you have a Head of Staff whitelist, but were not added to this forum group, then please reply to this topic and you will be added within the next 48 hours. Thank you

This will be placed into effect. It's an effective compromise in the following fashion: If the round has no promise, or is shit, majority will vote out, and the shuttle will tick over. If the round holds promise for the majority, then it'll continue, leaving only a minority without their wish. After the 3 hour mark, it becomes the old, one-swing-vote-winning spiel that we know and love. Sound good?

Staff complaint: Malfunction round 27DEC2014 ~0040 hrs
Skull132 replied to Tainavaa's topic in Staff Complaints Archive
I'm glad we can agree on this. So how about we refer to my original reply on the first page, and focus on the actual issue present, with the antics about gameplay placed on the sidelines. Why do you feel like you have been selected as a quarry? Or would you prefer to discuss this over some other means? At which point, I would recommend PM-ing FFrances with full details, or establishing some other form of dialogue with her.
