  2. Technomancer adds nothing to the game other than to satisfy the people who moaned about how "unrealistic" it is. The round type is boring at best and insufferably obnoxious at worst. Wizard had a lot of effort put into diversifiying it before it was removed and it could add to rounds, there were like five different types of wizard, each with their own angles to play into. It could certainly be improved upon, but technomancer was a deliberate downgrade.
  3. I didn't feel like the events were railroading the ship to a particular decision, rather, I felt like this was an event where there was real, tangible danger that weighed on every crew member. The severity of the repercussions that could befall the Horizon wasn't just felt by a few select people, which is a really common pitfall some events fall into, but an imminent danger that illustrated the perils of being functionally alone in space. That was the most important function of the event, in my opinion.
  4. I had to scratch the farthest depths of my mind to remember if you've ever been remotely annoying. Demon is consistently enjoyable to roleplay with. Also, imagine for a moment, having command during dead hour. That sounds great. I think it sounds great. and oh look it's one of my favoritest ever bestest things to see in a command application Plus one, gibe command whitelist, etcetera. I hope to see fatlizard again soon.
  5. Holy shit, no. Everything I want to say about this has already been said far more eloquently than I could ever say it, so I'm just going to try and add a coherent argument. Anything that can go wrong on a space station or space ship most assuredly will. There are about two hundred different ways to die in game, and as time goes on, that number will increase. The tagline for the game is "try to stay alive," and no matter how many years Aurora spends building an identity, that theme will persist. This is a game where you will die, in a universe where the accepted truth is that the Horizon can be very, very dangerous. There is no mechanical nor a in-character purpose for suit sensors to be unavailable on code, or any code. Nobody on the ship is ever truly safe. It is not believable. Like Gem said, suit sensors are already voluntary. They're also easy to forget. Worst case scenario, just buy a radio jammer. That's what they're for.
  6. star trek IS canon since it existed before timeline divergence which means we CAN AND SHOULD discuss prime directive ic

  7. Most servers actually already have this feature. This would just be QoL feature and bring us up to speed with everyone else.

  9. I eagerly await the addition of unagi to kitchen menus.
  10. Name it Runtime again. Runtime was a funny little code joke. It will always be relevant to the game. Always. edit: 𝗵𝗼𝗹𝘆 𝙛𝙪𝙘𝙠
  11. It's not a bad change, but I'm getting a kneejerk reaction because I'm one of several people who took a long, long break from Aurora before returning. I see that there are other people in the thread who feel the same way. Losing your whitelist, despite how easy they can be to get, is a daunting thing for some of us who just stop playing SS13 every so often. While I've always agreed that we should handle command whitelists with more care, I can't help but worry that it might discourage some people from returning. I would wholeheartedly agree with this if it was combined with additional criteria, or if you hadn't used your whitelist in longer a year.
  12. No. And here's why. I was a lore deputy until for about a year, from 2018 until 2019. We both know what happened, so instead of going through it all again, I'm going to post a link and an excerpt from the staff complaint that resulted in your termination, and allow everyone to read that thread and make up their own minds. I've worked with you closely enough to agree with the sentiments in this thread regarding your aggression, but I'll spare everyone from having to hear my own account in regards to your immature, hair trigger behavior, since it's already been covered in depth and I'd rather not throw stones in glass houses. Additionally, I'll have to agree with the sentiments DanseMacabre, CampinKiller, Triogenix, - after your termination, you took a year-long hiatus from Aurora. You are no longer in touch with the community, and it's of my opinion that no person, whether they write code, or lore, or handle tickets should be in an official position if they aren't an active member of the community.
  13. More labor movements. We've seen the ugly side of every other faction, and it's time we saw Biesel's. We've gone in this direction of "conglomerate of megacorporations that control everything" and we get the impression that everyone is Okay With It. And yeah, I get that there are people fighting the companies, but we aren't seeing enough of it. Mass media control can only do so much. I want to see people trying to form communities outside of SCC control, I want to see protests (they'll call them rioters, let's be honest) and I want to see people in Mendell just fighting to make their home better off because they didn't win independence just for this. I want to see the SCC fight back by running smear campaigns against corporate dissidents, I want to hear about "ex-employees" who tried to unionize their workplace, only to be called some nasty name like a syndicate of mutineers. I'm tired of seeing the nice side of Biesel and just making assumptions about what goes on behind the curtain.
  14. Yes and no. While Xrim is pretty much overtaken by dionae, the part they were apart of was more or less abandoned, with only nymphs scurrying about the forest. It will to make them a little anti-social., which.. well enough, they'll be mostly stuck in a lab anyhow. It probably made studying weird. You're alone for decades, and then all of a sudden there's an amphibian asking what your interpretation of the essay question was. Yes and yes! This is a good question. I would say longer than it took to finish their studies, but not as long as they were living in the woods. My tentative answer to this is twenty years, give or take, which is enough for them to get mostly well-adjusted and also get a feel for "there are whole worlds out there, and also people" I think someone approached Mycelium with the idea first. A skrellian representative from Nanotrasen, maybe working with their university who recruited them some time after completion of their degree I'm really excited to play a character who thinks humans are just utterly bizarre. All of my other characters have grown up, the very least hearing of and knowing of humans, but Mycelium has spent a large part of their life more or less under a rock. Though, since they've essentially been surrounded by skrell up until now, they're probably not hot on synthetics! Not even a little. Xenobotanist and only xenobotanist. I think realistically, they would be more suited for a natural science, but this isn't the real world, and most of their peers were skrell, which would've encouraged Mycelium to pursue some sort of theoretical research like this. Singular sound. I tried to hint at it in the backstory. Everything. Every single thing. They don't even bleed, not really. They leak something when you injure a gestalt, or a nymph, but it isn't really blood. They're these collective consciousness aliens, presumably from somewhere deep in space we haven't reached yet, or dionae could be so old that none of them has recorded where they're from. Maybe they aren't even from somewhere, and a nymph just.. popped out of the ground one day. Mysterious is an understatement for the dionae. Almost every species has had their own encounter with them. I guess a good summary is that I feel that dionae have some great horrorterror potential. Dionae are terrifying. We know nothing about them. Not really.
  15. It's not my best work! I'm not good at making lots of words. A whitelist application usually takes me much longer than two or so weeks, but I was intent on publishing this, collecting feedback and improving the application while it's up. On paper, I know where they're from and how long they were there (they're from Xrim, and they spent about half a century wandering the deep wilderness, the planet's background providing the possibility for the node to grow there and also for a gestalt to Get Incredibly Lost) but I found it a more compelling narrative to leave it out of the original backstory. I also (sort of) know that the same drive that kept them in the wilds leads them to grow a deeper appreciation for the cyclical nature of life (I keep using this phrase because I am very fond of it) and that appreciation evolves, as it typically does, into an interest in the sciences, and that their introduction into society leads to a sort of "wait, I can get paid to do this?" and from there on it's much, much more self explanatory. I'll add improvements to the backstory before midnight. edit: did that
  16. Righteous. Here are some improved sprites, courtesy of sprite santa yet again. frog drip TWO croak harder.dmi
  17. I'm really fond of the shade I used, but we can change it on the labcoat. I'd really like to keep it on the accessories.
  18. BYOND Key: WitchBells Character Names: Phoebe Essel, Zuhzir Mansurhani, Oceoyl'Fedas Wruorv'hxeo (whose.. name I'm probably going to change, actually. The character needs a rewrite.) Aserok Guwan, Mari Wu-Jeong, XI-Pumpkin, and those are basically all my favorites at the the moment. Species you are applying to play: Diona What color do you plan on making your first alien character: tree Have you read our lore section's page on this species?: Yep! Please provide well articulated answers to the following questions in a paragraph format. One paragraph minimum per question. Why do you wish to play this specific race: Identify what makes role-playing this species different than role-playing a Human: Where do I even start? Despite all the weird shit we've tried with skrell, dionae have gotten the closest to being The Terrifying And Weird Eldritch Thing in our lore. As far as I'm concerned, nobody in the universe really knows where they came from, they just showed up and we started giving them citizenships. It's fine. The skrell vouched for them, they're fine. Probably. Character Name: Emerging Networks Of Mycelium Singing In Tandem Please provide a short backstory for this character It's impossible for humanity to touch every surface of a planet. Deep in the woods, where nature grows wild, unchecked and untamed, a small colony of nymphs would emerge from the ground. They sang to eachother, explored, and basked in the glorious radiation of the yellow dwarf that shone through the treetops. It was in that kingdom of forest that the newly-formed gestalt observed the cyclical nature of life firsthand - how ancient, withering trees fall to make way for the young ones, and when they hid among the branches, watching wildlife tear eachother apart, how animals would feed upon the remains and insects would be born among what was left - and the most beautiful demonstration of all: fungi. Mycelium was uncertain how long they had spent in those woods. When they deliberately emerged as a gestalt, fungi fruited from their limbs and occupied the thoughts of their collective, driving their actions. The gestalt threw themselves into a singular passion, a singular voice driving the gestalt to pursue greater knowledge. Mycelium spent decades in their wilds, seeing how life functioned, but now was the time to learn how. Thankfully, the possibility of mastery was within their grasp, thanks to the hospitable amphibious creatures they met with after emerging. While they were focused on the stars, Mycelium kept their eye close to the ground, watching, and listening, and studying the beautiful things that grew from the balls of dirt floating through space. But some sacrifices must be made for such an endeavor - even if, in case of some unfortunate circumstance, one finds themselves studying the majesty of nature in a particularly large metal box floating through space, but one must make sacrifices for what they love. What do you like about this character? mushroom I know I'm required to put more here, but.. mushroom. Mushroom! How would you rate your role-playing ability? I say about the same shit every time this question pops up. I mean, I think I'm good at roleplaying. I think I approach characters more like a writer would. It's more fun to create characters with really engaging stories that some people can relate to. I like to challenge myself and experiment with my roleplay, and sometimes it doesn't always work out! Some times, the months and years go by and a character isn't right anymore, and sometimes they evolve on their own into something that's different, but not wrong. I resent the phase Aurora went through where we said "make a side character, not a protagonist!" because everyone is the protagonist of their own story, even if it's a slice of life sitcom where the biggest problem they have to worry about is having to go to the stupid, awful grocery store after work, and it's a fucking saturday. Notes: I swear this isn't a self-insert.
  19. BYOND Key: WitchBells Discord Username: Changes with the wind. Right now it's tiny cat#8952 Character Name: Quoro Wurri'Til Item Name: I've elaborated on each of the three items in the description instead. Item Function(s): They are clothing. They clothe. I'd like the outer robes to have some pockets, though. Item Description: black robes Some simple black robes, made to wear under something more elaborate. The fabric has a distinct texture to it, giving you the impression of activewear or swimsuits. skrellian fancy robes An elaborate yet functional set of robes favored by the upper echelons of skrellian society, with a silver belt attached. A star is embroidered on the back, symbolizing the Jargon Federation. skrellian silver headband A jeweled silver headband worn at the base of the headtails. Why is your character bringing this item to work?: As a primary numeral and as diplomatic personnel, Quoro has an obligation to look their best. Skrell of Quoro's status are afforded only the sickest threads and the flyest accessories. How did your character obtain this item?: Probably via some department store that only people of their status can enter. Especially the fancy robes. What value does this item have to your character, and what story does it tell?: Quoro knows their place in society, and (though they'd never say it outloud) expects those around them to know it as well. It also allows them to stand apart from human crewmembers with something distinct and alien, and I'm really into making my characters culturally distinct lately. Sprites: Located in the attachment! Thank you, sprite santa! Additional Comments: I knew this was relevant but I didn't know which field to put it in. This character really excites me because I have way, waaaaay more experience playing "degenerates" than I do any other character type. I've made a guwan, a fucking calico, and a glorsh sympathizer. But Quoro is the opposite of that! They're a dignitary and part of a class in skrellian society points at, and goes, "See this? This is what we want you to be." For whatever reason, skrell consulars have been really unpopular to play, so I get to put Quoro on the station like WORRY NOT. BIG BROTHER FROG IS WATCHING. It's great. I'm having fun. frog drip (quoro's outfit).dmi
