If anything I think the contentious nature of this thread should highlight that the server is divided and as such, removal would not be healthy for the server. But, I think some ground can be made towards improving stationbounds in our setting that shouldn’t involve a lot of changes in terms of the code. I think it was put very aptly to me when a friend mentioned how if you were to play an IPC, they fall conceptually somewhere between machine and human. However, a stationbound would instead fall conceptually somewhere between machine and IPC. A stationbound and an IPC are similar, but ultimately different, leading to a fascinating question of just how close of a kinship they can truly share. Nonetheless, here are a few thoughts I had in regards to fixes. Would locking stationbounds into one department improve the question of ‘stealing jobs’? That way the stationbound is constrained to similar limitations as any other character would be. The lore by and large needs to change or see new additions so as to better encourage character development. I think we’re forgetting just how powerful the lore can be in regards to this situation. And it would require little to no coding. Hell, an arc could be woven around any substantial changes. If it comes down to removal being the only feasible option at this time, as much as I’d disagree with it, then we might as well put stationbounds on the IPC or (more likely) AI whitelist until further changes can be made.

Why not make Hephaestus be in Science as a Robotics only role? It could even stay as Heph + Orion as well if needed, making it feel as though Robotics is loosely connected to science and operations.

[Accepted] Niennab's Unathi Application
niennab replied to niennab's topic in Whitelist Applications Archives
Shiuz would likely be uncomfortable around less traditional Unathi, ranging from strained tolerance with the Dominians to general dislike of the Autahk. With Dominians, pirates and more corporate fairing Sinta it’d come from a place of general unfamiliarity and ignorance whereas with Autahk it’d be an issue of religion. Shiuz would not think any ill will towards the Unathi on Moghes. Something I couldn’t fit in naturally in the original backstory was that his parents were originally refugees fleeing Moghes (presuming this doesn’t mess up my colour choice). So, in some sense he feels a loose kinship to Moghes culturally in a similar way that a second generation immigrant in our world might. I think Shiuz would feel dejected indifference towards Hephaestus. There was little recourse or way out of his debt but through Hephaestus he is able to work that debt off and, I presume, treated with a smidge more workers rights than his father might have seen. -
[Accepted] Niennab's Unathi Application
niennab replied to niennab's topic in Whitelist Applications Archives
Thank you to everyone's kind words on my application. It meant a lot to me and I appreciate it immensely. Curses, you found the recipe! When it comes to Shiuz and the Sk’ahk religion, it by and large serves as a point of comfort for him. There is something inherently pleasant in knowing that his father is resting well in the Beastlands. However at the same time, there is a degree of struggle felt in the church’s belief surrounding one's fate. If everyone’s outcome in life is predetermined, what did his father’s life being cut short serve? In regards to the civil war between the Hegemon and the Sk’ahk faith, is this pertaining to the recent events with the Iron Masks and the Iron Crusades? At the start Shiuz would have felt a degree of questioning over the destruction of ancient temples, attacking villages and kidnapping, however he would have trusted that if High Priest Unzi was following the Warrior’s Code, then the outcome must be one that was Righteous and well-intended. However with the civil war coming to a close and the High Priest Unzi banished, Shiuz’s concerns would have shifted from the larger to the small. With all that was said and done, he’d begin to wonder as to whether Sinta like himself might experience discrimination for following the Sh’ahk faith in light of the recent conflict. Whether this would mean on a broader legal scale or the day-to-day between other Sinta. -
I feel the same frustration surrounding stationbounds however I wouldn't want to see them removed, at least not without a genuine attempt to rework them. Both in terms of the lore and mechanics, they have not been touched for a long time. Equally I think a whitelist is only justified if stationbounds are changed drastically in terms of their lore or mechanics. The suggestion of removing maintenance drones would of course be ridiculous considering the crucial role they play in setting up the engine during low pop hours when there are no engineers.

2 dismissals Shifting the Connotation: Staff Complaints
niennab replied to Caelphon's topic in Rejected Policy
If the name has that much weight, then who is to say the punishment against any agregious staff wouldn't be lessened? Since it's only a review and not a complaint. Moreover we run into the unfair bias that a player can have a complaint lodged again them but staff are only 'reviewed'. -
Some recent commissions, largely for different settings

BYOND Key: Niennab Character Names: Z.I. Provenance, Khadija Al-Ashab, Gulrez, Z.I. Brandon, IRU-Sentiment, Aubrey Piper, Flotsam and Finley Greyson. (I’ve had a few others but they didn’t pan out as successfully as the names here). Species you are applying to play: Unathi What color do you plan on making your first alien character: Brown Have you read our lore section's page on this species?: Yes! Please provide well articulated answers to the following questions in a paragraph format. One paragraph minimum per question. Why do you wish to play this specific race: Having been floating around the server for about a year and a half before coming back in June, I believe that unlocking the Unathi whitelist is the key to continuing my interest in playing. Since Haydizzle became the maintainer back in the day and the Unathi team greatly improved the species from questionable beginnings, I have always been meaning to get my Unathi whitelist. Plus, I am excited to play something that differs greatly from a human in their mannerisms. Identify what makes role-playing this species different than role-playing a Human: Beyond biological differences, Unathi differ from humans in that they are more than likely to have a closer relationship to living off of the land and feudal societies. Beyond more niche cases such as Vysoka and Dominia, Aurora-verse humans have largely ascended past the base struggle of simply being able to feed oneself. Moreover whereas sex no longer dictates a large part of human culture across the Spur, for Unathi it is baked into their identity as a species. By having more roles dictated by sex, Unathi struggle with the divide wrought between traditionalism of a more simpler society while grappling with the larger conflict of space travel, technology and the greater universe as a whole. Simply put, Unathi were brought into the fold of space travel too early, resulting in the more obvious devastation to Moghes as well as the conflict of traditionalism in the face of expansion. Moreover where humans largely have the worst parts of their history settled, or less egregious examples played out daily, Unathi have more recently been devastated by nuclear warfare on Moghes. This catastrophe had a shocking impact on them then but I’d also argue that Unathi are a people still struggling with the ‘fallout’ of such a conflict even today. Character Name: Shiuz Gukuzan Please provide a short backstory for this character: Born beneath a canopy of riches and trade forever outside his reach, Shiuz was forever witness to the progressive, democratic luxuries of New Skalamar on Ouerean while struggling in its shadows. Born into poverty, his father mined the sands that provided the great artisans with the materials to weave beautiful glass sculptures. On one fateful shift, the sands gave way on a higher ridge and a Sand Loader came crashing down, killing Shiuz’ father, Mizaruz. This event left Shiuz’ family without a stable source of income. Unable to provide for herself and her son, Kazali, Shiuz’ mother, was forced to relinquish her son to the care of an orphanage to survive. Shiuz was only 6 at the time. Severed from his parents, made into a Guwan, and thrust into the care of the Gukuzan orphanage, Shiuz processed his grief the only way he knew how, by acting out. Never adopted, Shiuz was a rowdy child in his adolescence. Although treated favorably better than if he were placed in a Kuhwinla orphanage, Shiuz remained at odds with his caretakers and their attempts at instilling obedience in him. As the years stretched on and when Not’zar Izeweki’s edict in 2459 made it so that all orphans were no longer labeled as Guwan, Shiuz was faced with the potential of a future. As he continued to grow, his behavior mellowed out. Dejected but obedient, following his 17th birthday Shiuz was contracted out as a Shaft Miner through Hephaestus Industries and over the years, eventually found himself aboard the SCC Horizon. Faced with an insurmountable debt, Shiuz finds himself toiling under the stars. No different from his father, Shiuz hopes that his future will amount to more than a passing name. Shiuz follows the Sk’akh faith. What do you like about this character? Beyond what might seem like a simple character, I like that I am able to possibly dip into issues pertaining to honour and tradition surrounding masculinity as well as the nuances of what it means to have one's childhood robbed by conflict. Although Shiuz has mellowed out with time, I think there is something to be said for how that’d be reflected in an adult. What does thinking you are a Guwan for most of your life do to a person? Plus, I get to play a big ol’ lizard. How would you rate your role-playing ability? I think I am a pretty good writer but I have the habit of my characters speaking in similar dialects or going through the same arcs on core concepts surrounding identity, death and personhood. Playing a new race may help me move away from these habits and diversify my writing. Notes:

Some recent pieces. Commissions are also open.

Could the bar backroom be made radiation proof? Any time there's a radiation storm, that poor dumb monkey Punpun gets blasted. Whereas I think the other pets are in protected rooms.

I could likely add it to deluxe in the future. Since, if it was successful, diamond, red, and syndie have it after all. (and there's a lot of NT bars from my sprites) Lately I've been adding an opened version of the labcoats as well as tweaks to the existing shading. Is there normally a standard wait time for developer applications however? 20/11/2022 EDIT I figured I'd add the corgi to my application however I wanted to also put a note that until I get a word on my app, I will be halting development for now.

Recently made a Konyang flag as well as some tweaks to existing flags as well as updating the soap sprites. PR here: https://github.com/Aurorastation/Aurora.3/pull/14685

If we are to go by the logic that the ship is a boat and that the residential decks are below (and here I always thought they were above us), then doesn't the current numbering system work? If not that they should have a zero infront of them. The helm of a ship is around the top, like our deck 3, and we're launching space craft from deck 1. Then, we can presume the residential decks are in descending order. Drawing over some existing diagram:
-
I've seen you put a lot of effort into PRs as of late and I think the server would benefit to have you on as a developer. Easy +1 from me.
-
I don't mind adding the names to them but I think generally people are going to view the decks as they would a building. Swapping it out could end up a noob trap for new players, and confusing for existing players following the swap.
-
I could! Although I wouldn't feel comfortable starting any of the larger overhauls unless I am taken onboard. The furniture is a good point though. Which machines would you say look outdated? So I can keep them in mind.

Admittedly it was Stryker who taught me how to PR, so the honour should go to him. Thank you for the kind words however! Since making the application, I've made some more things. Two screenshots from the PRs listed in the first post: As well as two recent changes to some toys and the addition of the portable memory wiper:

I'm fine with this outcome. Thank you for looking into the matter.

@Omicega Your demeanor and the weight behind the words can be viewed in the blob thread. This was not something that only I picked up on either. However it is neither mine nor anyone elses’ job to education you on the meaning of words. It is a contentuous word. You said yourself that ChairRP isn’t of substance. Nonetheless, please stay on topic. There was nothing on the common channel denoting that the cadet had been ignored. If we believe this to be the case that the cadet was ignored, then there’s very little basis for where Omi got their information from. Furthered by the fact that WickedCybs, who as I understand was the cadet, admitted that nobody was talking on the security channel in the Relay after the event, sparking Omi’s library clique comment as well as the later conversation with biplane (in the above spoilers tab). One such note being: If it isn’t an incident of metagaming and pure chance, then it’s another repeated incident of Omi making wild claims about a situation they were not involved with nor had no information on. Since, the cadet cryoing was the incident that sparked the Relay comment. @Garnascus I did not ahelp it during the round, finding it odd but innocuous but in retrospect I wish I had. However, thankfully having kept my client open, I was able to go in after the fact and acquire the screenshot from game after being sent a screenshot of Omi’s comment from the relay, as someone who is apart of the presumed 'clique'.

I am not a moderator or an admin so the results of player conflicts are not going to be disclosed to me. Nonetheless, in both instances one can view repeated behavior of saying mean spirited things, only to try and construe a differing narrative after the fact. Whether this be pretending ChairRP isn’t a contentious word, claiming I am cherry-picking/brigading you, that someone asking you to clarify means they are being facetious, so on and so forth as detailed above I stand by the comment made regarding you downplaying the experience of others. However pointing to my abrasive comment does not undo the above abuses. Unless staff have questions, I have nothing further to add.

BYOND Key: niennab Game ID: Forum thread, Event: Dreary Futures: All Aboard!, and Relay Player Byond Key/Character name: Omicega Staff involved: Peppermint (?) Reason for complaint: From the start of the thread, Omi consistently engaged in bad faith, rude and aggressive arguments that derailed the suggestion, leading to it eventually being locked. Omi’s arguments did not refer at all back to the suggestion, which was arguing to reduce the blob spawning during lowpop when no one in engineering, medical, or the manifest is filled. Instead, they focused on criticizing and demeaning players who they deem are not ‘capable enough’ despite accidents happening or players who engage in ‘chairRP’. Then, they ended off with a comment trying to claim conspiracy against them, as though we were trying to construe their choice of words as a slur. This is grossly undermining what a slur is. The topic was never about removing blob but rather making it more reasonable for a roughly 6 person manifest. This is not the first time that I have seen this type of behavior from them and I would like to include it here as well. One recent incident was when following an event, Omi implied that a group of people roleplaying in the library were a ‘zavodskoi clique’ furthering their Arc(tm), despite these players consistently welcoming and engaging with anyone who stopped by. This was from the Relay: Leading to them being particularly aggressive to one player inquiring about what they meant: This incident also led to them meta-ing over the Engineering radio during the event about something they’d have no knowledge of. Which as I understand it, a Zavodskoi cadet entered storage shortly after not getting any response over the security radio channel. The comment from the relay is mean spirited and encourages a toxic atmosphere that I do not think is appropriate for the server at large. Reaching out post staff looking over the thread, Peppermint advised that I write this player complaint. Approximate Date/Time: August 12th (Thread), July 23rd (Relay, Event Round)

Accidents happen. An event that is formed around 'be perfect or get fucked' is not a good event. Kindly read the proposal as well. It has been made clear as day, and by multiple people no less, that this would be to improve blobs on lowpop. The suggestion would not impact the hours that you play. Regardless, this remark is the only thing that needs to be highlighted to make your perspective clear as day. If you aren't interested in a high roleplay setting and would instead choose to downplay genuine, earnest and interesting writing between multiple parties, and want to focus on mechanics, then another server might be better for your play style.

Just because you don't have issue with the blob justifies that a timezone that you don't even play on should suffer. People are going to be at different levels of capability as Engineers. It is a struggle to go through as one engineer and even more dangerous when there are no medical aboard. Two capable characters nearly died on lowpop extended due to a blob with no medical.
