  1. This. We just need to make the EFTPOS not a POS to use. (Seriously, using that thing is an exercise in frustration.)
  2. I'll just say it like it is then. I'm tired of people constantly posting about how others sound when they post. People are going to argue. People are going to have different opinions. People are going to put their opinions in different ways. Some people will always feel uncomfortable posting their opinions publicly, for fear of looking bad or being ostracized. Some people, like me, can be hyper-aggressive at times. Others can be ridiculously passive-aggressive when blocked or stopped. You will not change this. Not without fundamentally changing human nature. Let's allow the administration team to handle how they moderate their forums, and they can decide what tones of discussion are acceptable, or not, on the server they volunteer to run. If they want our input on how to moderate, there is no shortages of ways they can acquire it. I am personally getting tired of people asking, or demanding, that others change how and why they speak. If you find something offensive, why not message someone direly? (Like I did with Erik not long ago. I offered an apology for our disagreement and asked that both of us try to moderate our behavior. Since the exchange we had in-game was unacceptably bad, and both of us agreed it should have been handled better OOCly.) or, if the post is bad enough, report it with the report button. We do not need weekly discussions on forum tone. It is getting ridiculous.
  3. http://aurorastation.org/forums/viewtopic.php?f=17&t=2047 You can have aggressive arguments, or you can have politely passive-aggressive approaches to debates. You cannot expect one person to do both, and you cannot expect us all to be perfectly civil at all times if people feel strongly on a matter. Pick your poison. I've noticed a lot of people complaining about tone on the forums lately. Can we stop?
  4. It would be a bonus if it prevented your jumpsuit from getting covered in blood. ...because labcoats don't actually do that at the moment.
  5. I will say nothing on the locked doors, but the AI really shouldn't be warned for the "syphons" in particular. As for who the AI listens too in mutiny, that's one of those grey areas. Each AI has a different methodology for how it decides how it listens too. If the AI did not feel your deposing of the original captain was valid, then it is within its rights to refuse to recognize your new captain. I know of at least one other AI player who would have done the same. The same player has another AI that will accept two heads of staff overriding the captain, which is more in-line with my own AI. Mutiny is supposed to be confusing, awkward, and tricky for the players to decide what side to be on. This AI sided with the loyalist captain, through thick and thin. Depending on the reasoning it was given (for example, a bluespace pathogen event) such actions could very well have been justified.
  6. I do support this application. Having known Focks from well before I joined Aurora. They are by far one of the most level-headed people I have known and they can play a fairly wide range of characters very well. We require additional Boxes.
  7. If anything they would be much more highly experimental, rarer, and cost exponentially more.
  8. Syphons on aurora are exceedingly slow. Killing someone with them will take ages, and vents from another area actually would completely stop and reverse the process due to how much faster vents are than syphons (unless distro is affected). I will actually routinely intentionally open doors and firelocks to help speed up re-pressurization in a controlled manner, which does occasionally scare people who ignore the lockdown+tape that was set up. Atmospherics itself does not create much lag. No, not even syphoning a room. The real lag-causers are FIRES, which need to be updated quite badly (We have an old version of bay's firecode, which none of our coders have touched. Their new version is much, much less laggy and also can break floors, which makes fires less deadly.) Likewise, cleaning a gas spill or superheated area is actually trivially easy if you don't spread it around. Just vent the area (with a RCD or by taking out a few walls) and then refill it. If you aren't dealing with sun-level heat (3000-4000k) you can even just turn on the gas filters or use replace air to fix a room. From what I can see, the AI was very careful not to let anyone be injured by the syphons. I do not see what the issue is.
  9. Sierrra made a generator for records. http://sierrabrown.me/aurorarecords/index.php?list It is a wonderful resource.
  10. In a stressful situation, familiarity can matter. Sometimes a head of staff will have time to interview a transfer and review their records. Other times they are simply far too busy to do so. In the latter case it comes down to a simple question: "Can this person work in my department and not mess things up royally?" While it may not be entirely fair, and might even be slightly elitist to say, there really isn't anything wrong with forgoing an interview process with someone who your character does, ICly, know can cover a job. The last thing you want during an emergency is dealing with a transfer of someone who does not know what is expected in their role, or who you cannot know if they will be reliable to do what you need done. While by all means refusing transfers during calm rounds is somewhat shitty, if the head of staff is busy you can't expect them to just okay your entry to their department. As for command/senior roles? Those are very rarely done for a reason, and assigning an interim successor is a very, very important task for any head. You do not want someone who the team as a whole will ignore, or someone who will make the department look bad/act incorrectly. Just like you do not want to simply waltz into a department as a head of staff one day and expect the team there to respect you/do everything you say. Frankly? If I was busy. I'd have told you "no" too. Intern positions and normal roles exist for a reason. Your best bet is to use them if you can.
  11. I would rather not force people to handle every hostage situation the same way. Which is what this suggestion would do. If someone wants to shout, you can shoot them. It doesn't need or make sense for it to be reflexive or automatic.
  12. It is supposed to be a "move and get shot" action. People use it for more than it's really intended to be used. If you want to have full-blown intentional hostage situation, you need to do more than just click on someone once. Shout them to the ground, tie them up, stun them. etc. The whole point of the feature is a reflexive fire in response to movement. Not someone speaking over comms. Taking hostage should not be an i-win button.
  13. Frankly? I'd shout anyway. Hostages never survive. Ever. Calling sec, or not, doesn't change that yer gonna die. Using the hostage feature to take hostages is dumb and virtually never works out. There are better ways to do it. For example: stunning them and tying them up. (Funfact, stuns stop you from using your headset long enough for your attacker to remove it and still tie you up.) Just shoot 'em if they shout. There's no need to add more auto-fire actions to take_hostage.
  14. To preface: I'm an outsider to this. Take my opinion with a grain of salt. I've dealt with some very immature and rude people before. Quite a few, in fact. Over the years I've seen a lot of people who are difficult, rude, and sometimes outright belligerent. Doubly so when questioned. Many of them can even be decent people when spoken too privately, and yet complete and total fuckwits elsewhere. You know what I've found? People change. People mature. Some people I knew who were very, very bad elsewhere are here. To the point where they had outright bans for behavior. Some of them were openly chased out of one or more communities . I'm not saying who you were, I'm sure all of you know who and what I'm referring too. Some of said players I have not seen regularly for a year or more, and found here. Overall, after playing with them for a few months? They've changed. Some of them have changed drastically for the better. I'm not saying they are perfect. I'm not saying I am perfect. I am, however, saying that even the "worst of the worst" (according to some people) can and will change for the better. All they need is a chance and a bit of encouragement. Change does not happen overnight. Change doesn't happen in a few days. Change can take a year or more to come to fruition, even. However... You cannot change without being given the time and opportunity to do so. I personally +1 this. Give Theplahunter a chance to prove he is sincerely willing to change, on the condition that he knows this is his final chance.
  15. Playing something different from your standard fare can revitalize interest. Taking a break for a few months can also do so. People get bored. People get tired. People burn out.
  16. Well this thread exploded today. Right. Tainavaa? It may be worthwhile to step back a bit. You've made your stance clear, and that is fine. Let's look over the preposition as a whole. The suggested course of action is as follows: To give view, but not post, access to all registered users to the Head of Staff forums. Arguments for View Access "This is causing some players to be partially excluded from discussions that directly impact them regardless" - Bokaza "Everyone should be able to voice their opinion on regulations and such, if not in the subforum, then raise questions in the General or Suggestions, while quoting from there." - Bokaza "(we) want a quiet place to discuss what to do. " - Bokaza "OOCly, it affects everyone, not just heads." - Gollee "Its just a place where we go and argue about paperwork, keeping it hidden will only raises tension." - Starfish "It makes sense from an RP-standpoint that it would be restricted to those who actually have the access." - Valkrae "The reason players don't really have a say is because they're not command, they haven't filled the roles (probably) here on Aurora and they don't have a play-style or their own personal SoP to discuss with the other players." - Xander Arguments against View Access "People who are non white listed and want to participate but cant I imagine might develop animosity for those they disagree with but can't really voice." - Tainavaa "One of the few reasons the concept of "need-to-know" exists." - Tainavaa "If everyone sees and has the right to comment, in or out of the subforum, you might as well just take it away" - Tainavaa "We shouldn't let practicality get hindered by social issues." - Jaker "There is no real scandal or reason for everyone to see the Heads discuss or bicker about their personal policies." - Jaker "Nor is it necessary in bringing people who do not play heads, get involved with a party they are not involved with" - Jaker "Having a board where heads can butt heads or exchange experiences has actually benefited how the Heads play." - Jaker Reviewing the head board right now, the following topics are on the front page: UPDATE: Duty Officer Action -Sticky -Notice regarding Duty Officer Action on various players who have had complaints. Very important for heads, not something a normal player should know Cloning Policy: Possible Solution -A discussion on cloning policy for antagonists -Probably something most players should be able to see. Affects everyone. [Guide] Greytide 101 -A guide on handling trouble players/migrants from other servers -Could go in the guide section, but really only relevant to heads. Normal players don't need to see it. Intro's/Characters We Play -A list of characters and who plays them. Also a quick meet-and-greet personally. -A non-issue for people to see. Cloning policy -A discussion on general cloning policy. -See Above Captains. -Captain players sharing tips -Not super necessary to keep hidden. Would be useful for future heads of staff to read. Head of Staff Manifest -An up-to-date list of all active heads. not really up to date. -See intros. On the topic of console building. -A discussion on who should be involved/responsible for building department-specific equipment. -Not really relevant to anyone who isn't the CE or another head that might want consoles done. Engineers might want some of the info, but it's really more a policy debate. On the Topic of: Autopsies -A discussion about Autopsy procedure. Who gets the body first. -See console building above. Mostly relevant to the CMO, HOS, and their respective departments. On Account Suspensions -A discussion about suspending station accounts as punishment. -See console building above. Mostly relevant to the HOP, Captain, and HOS. URGENT: Station Directives -A EXTERNAL link for posting proposals for station directives. Said link does NOT have a login. -This really, really should not be visible to people who are not heads of staff or server staff. As the suggestions here directly impact in-game policy. RFC: 001 Principles of Engineering operation and efficiency. -Some suggestions for improving engineering. -See console building above. Proposal: Security Training Program -A suggestion for HOS characters to cross-train some station staff in official sessions. -See console building above. Red Alert Drill -A suggestion for a "Red alert" drill on extended. -See console building above. HoS Copypastas -A SOP document that OP posted for other HOS characters to use. -I don't see why normal players couldn't see it. It contained a lot of jokes though. (Player)EVENT - Biohazard Training! -A suggestion for a "Biohazard Training" event on extended. Never panned out due to lack of interest. -See console building above. Remember the real reason we play on this server. -A discussion on creating fun scenarios as heads and following procedure. we talked about a biodome too. -harmless to show to non-heads. Actually, may be beneficial to have them see it. Keeping the station from blowing up -Tips and tricks heads use to avoid having the station get destroyed. -This really. really. really should not be visible to everyone. As a determined and talented griefer could use the information in there to their advantage. The thread we all need - how to make Mutiny work -A thread on mutiny, and acting during it as a head -Not super relevant to non-heads. SOP vs Station Directives -A thread discussing old SOP and the new directive system -Not really relevant to anyone anymore. Keeping players in game -An OOC discussion on keeping players in the game. When, why, how. -Should probably be a general discussion topic. The Standard Operating Procedure -A discussion on the old SOP, which is now gone. -Not really relevant to anyone anymore. A Friendly Reminder to Heads of Staff and SSDing -A quick reminder that heads are supposed to Cryo -Completely not-relevant to people without the whitelist. Emergency Shuttle -A discussion on when to call the shuttle. -Considering the subject, this should probably be visible to the rest of the crew. I believe this was reposted to general chat after the discussion. Demotion Procedures -A discussion on setting up ground rules demotion procedures. -Considering the subject, I'd rather not have this discussion public. It would allow people to try and line-toe, which is irritating to deal with. Currently We have: Five players giving arguments for giving read access. Two players giving arguments against. Roughly equal number of arguments for each. Four threads which probably should not be visible to people without the whitelist. Eleven threads which are irrelevant to non-heads. Four threads which would be beneficial for non-heads to see. Two of them are introduction/heads of staff listing. Two completely irrelevant threads due to change in policy. Considering the numbers, I would suggest the following: 1. Addition of a sub-forum to the head of staff forum where more sensitive threads. (Duty officer, directive suggestion link, anti-griefer tactics) should be posted. This forum would only be visible to white-listed players. 2. Changing the general discussion area of the heads forum to public viewing. 3. Slightly heavier moderation when it comes to sensitive and non-sensitive topics. Threads without sensitive data should be in the public subforum, threads with sensitive data should be in the private subforum. 4. Topics which involve more than just headstaff should have a second topic in the general forums with a link in the body of both topics. To act as a place that non-white-listed players and visitors can air their opinions publicly without cluttering up a discussion between the people who actually can/are playing the affected role.
  17. Oh great, another Lazybutt sibling in engineering. Nasir is going to end up ordering second crate of extra gloves isn't he? ((This actually excites me))
  18. I've always personally believed that uh, a goodly number of human groups do take slaves of all species. It is just that as a whole the Sol Alliance is anti-slavery/anti-piracy, and Nanotrasen is Sol Alliance (Or at least pays lip service to them.) Considering the difference in populations and the massive technology gulf however, I agree that it is strange that the People's republic of Ahdomai and Moghes haven't been made into client states of the Alliance. It's probably just the case that the Alliance isn't a unified government, but rather a well... alliance of multiple worlds/colonies who individually are not strong enough to invade either world with enough firepower to be decisive. Plus one must take into account the inevitible infighting and bickering within the alliance itself... as well as efforts to improve infrastructure and population on the outer human colonies. It's very probable that unless the Tajara or Unathi as a group sought to be made members of the Alliance, the Alliance simply doesn't see the point.
  19. Totally made a Pneumatic cannon last night. Your engineering team is comprised of trained professionals. We are loyal, hardworking, and skilled in our areas of expertise. You can expect good things to come out of engineering often. You can trust us to get the job done, and get it done well. http://i.imgur.com/QZB8RzF.png
  20. Can we get some not-wacky/crazy canon events sometime? Cat Gulag/Not-lifeweb/Astrodika are all 'fun' and all, but having some lore-based events that make sense would be better.
  21. This is Nasir Khayyam, greetings. He has a small thing to add to this report. A member of engineering, Cole Desmond, was the person who's body had been disposed of improperly. Due to this neglect Desmond later found their previous body in disposals and, in a fit of CMD, very nearly committed full un-retrievable suicide by jumping into the singularity engine. Desmond was talked down from the action, and he will be sending Desmond to counseling sessions and personally assuring that they are well cared-for while on-duty. Disposing of a corpse in that manner is unacceptable, and very nearly resulted in a permanent loss of a very good staff member and friend. He demands action be taken to find the perpetrator and see that incidents like these never happen again. Thank you.
