greenjoe Posted September 24, 2023 Posted September 24, 2023 Pun Pun was killed in Steel Horizon part 1, My suggestion is his death remains canon and he is replaced wtih a capyBARa, with a idris colored bow on its head. 6 1 Quote
White Void Posted September 24, 2023 Posted September 24, 2023 Agreed, let the poor monkey rest (Plus i would like to see the service sector getting a unique pet instead of the by now generic monkey) +1 Quote
KingOfThePing Posted September 24, 2023 Posted September 24, 2023 Don't think it needs the bow necessarily. Ian already has one. Quote
ReadThisNamePlz Posted September 24, 2023 Posted September 24, 2023 Okay, fine. Give me the sprites for a Capybara and I'll look into making this happen. Quote
Dreamix Posted September 24, 2023 Posted September 24, 2023 Capybara was supposed to be operations' pet. Quote
geeves Posted September 24, 2023 Posted September 24, 2023 operations can have the tamed(?) reaver now that i think about it it'd be funnier if they just kept a hostile reaver in a box 1 Quote
greenjoe Posted September 24, 2023 Author Posted September 24, 2023 YEah I was reminded there was a vote for the Ops pet Quote

Flpfs Posted September 24, 2023 Posted September 24, 2023 Having a monkey as a pet never made sense, they are not pet animals for many obvious reasons and are meant to be in the wild. Same thing goes for capybaras, they weigh up to 160lb, need a lot of space and water, and are social animals meaning that they enjoy living with their peers. They live near shallow bodies of water IRL, like rivers and lakes. Putting one in a tiny, dry, metal plated office would be stressing and totally unsanitary. Anyone who has lived in regions where capybaras naturally exist in know that they should not be kept locked in a building like a cat or dog, they are exotic animals meant to be in the wild and require great care to be kept in artificial condition. I know that I will be called pedantic and that this is a videogame, etc. I don't wanna sound like a nerd or mean, but it would really not make any sense to add a capybara to a totally lifeless metal ship. We should focus on adding a pet that would realistically exist or a fictional creature from our lore setting, which I believe would be even better and create more depth. Quote

We have dogs, a fox, and a cat shoved in what is a tiny cramped office, the dogs are locked inside of a small glass cage until they are let go, none of the pets make sense, at all. I don't think a capybara is all that much of a stretch here, come on, the pun is excellent. Quote
niennab Posted September 24, 2023 Posted September 24, 2023 +1 I think Punpun is a reflection of typical SS13 servers and "le epic memes" that stem from having silly monkeys on board. Any other animal would be an improvement and I'd be happy to ser a capybara. Quote
rrrrrr Posted September 24, 2023 Posted September 24, 2023 -1. Pet bloat has been a long-term problem ever since Ian was first added to /tg/ in 2012~. Kill Pun-Pun off and don't replace him. He almost never sees any usage, which is tragic, because I love monkeys. Other people have pointed out why putting a capybara into a cramped, tiny room is a form of animal cruelty. I cannot suspend my disbelief that a one-hundred and fifty pound semi-aquatic rodent would make for a good pet aboard on a cramped refinery/exploration vessel with no bodies of water or even any open grassy areas for it to frolic in. I say this as a staunch lover of all large South American mammals, such as the tapir and capybara. People should be asking why every department needs a pet when the vast majority of them, outside of Ian, who has seniority and makes sense, almost never see any use. 1 2 Quote
rrrrrr Posted September 24, 2023 Posted September 24, 2023 Also, the capybara is named 'coconut' in the .dmi, a reference to the 'coconut doggy' meme. Capybaras are no more or less a meme than monkeys are. They're both funny looking dudes, which amuses people. 1 Quote
ImmortalRedshirt Posted September 24, 2023 Posted September 24, 2023 I agree with the above. The pets have rarely added anything of value, and they only ever seem to be around to provide cheap shock when this metal deathtrap of a ship kills them. Fewer pets, the better. 4 Quote
La Villa Strangiato Posted September 24, 2023 Posted September 24, 2023 I like ship pets when they're more conventional domestic animals, like Ian or Crusher, or more fantastical like Ginny and Ives. I always feel a little bad when exotic animals like monkeys or foxes are put on the ship; I know it's silly and pedantic, but it's just a stretch of my suspension of disbelief. I wouldn't mind something like a bird/parakeet in the bar, and maybe a rodent like a rat in Operations. These are just suggestions, though. 2 Quote
Yaku Posted September 25, 2023 Posted September 25, 2023 If pun pun gets killed off can we have a small painting/picture of Pun pun on the wall? Would be a cool memorial for his years of service if this gets trough. Otherwise i don't mind having a capybara or any pets in general. Pets do see their uses on occasion. Kept one as a hostage once even though they shot me anyway the fox died and that stirred a bit of IC drama within security. Other than that they're just npc's who bring a bit more life to the station. 1 Quote
OolongCow Posted September 25, 2023 Posted September 25, 2023 It would make sense to replace Pun-Pun with a "social" animal. We already have two dogs, give them a cat that can laze behind the bar. Quote
DatSamTho Posted September 25, 2023 Posted September 25, 2023 Pun-Pun is literally never used or involved in anything. All for this. Quote

Fluffy Posted September 25, 2023 Posted September 25, 2023 I would give crusher to the Bar, and give a mercy dog to medbay, basically a Columbo whose AI can be told to roam and seek injured people, with a suit sensor to know the location and a radio where it would bark when it finds someone injured This also makes the pet useful, instead of staying in the CMO's office or the reception glass cube, as well as justify the existence and presence of such animal Quote
KingOfThePing Posted September 25, 2023 Posted September 25, 2023 I think pets should remain pets, not tools. Columbo is the exception to this and that's fine because it's a guard dog. I'd also not shuffle them around. 1 Quote

Ok, other people above have pointed out that the pets often don't see any use, rarely add anything of value, or the likes What I was saying would address those points, it would see use and add value in having it, etc. Why do you think pets should remain pets? Why do you think it preferable than them having some utility too? Quote
KingOfThePing Posted September 25, 2023 Posted September 25, 2023 (edited) They are mascots. That's their purpose. Like in real life people hold cats or dogs or reptiles or bunnies or whatever because they are funny and because they keep you company. You dont get pets to use them for a specific purpose, except at some workplaces (like guard dogs), but then they are no pets, they are employees. There is not much more to elaborate on other that our pets should remain funny novelties. Â Don't come and argue about theraphy dogs or assistance dogs. Same thing, not pets in the modern sense.
