Guest Posted January 6, 2016 Posted January 6, 2016 Title. Kinda sick of people screaming into their headset for help after getting stunbatonned by either an antagonist or anybody that wants to take advantage of them. If you're in any other position that isn't 'standing' or 'being able to walk around and interact with objects', you shouldn't be able to use your headset.
Guest Marlon Phoenix Posted January 6, 2016 Posted January 6, 2016 This would really make it safer for antagonists to do their initial "capture" phase. It may be frustrating for a certain sect of victims, but if the antagonist isn't fearful of "HELP JANITOR STEVE DOUGLAS ATTACKING ME INCINERATOR" bringing doom upon them at any second then it might allow for a bit more elaborate interaction between antagonists and their victims. It's why I exclusively only antag as changling anymore, because I can mute them before stunning them and holding a brief interaction before eating them. I tend to space the body or gib it and turn it into hamburgers, which tends to permanently remove people from the round, so the fact I haven't had people angry at my changeling shenanigans in... Forever only strengthens my hypothesis about this.
Frances Posted January 6, 2016 Posted January 6, 2016 Hoooow about, you can't use your headset when on the ground, or restrained? Gives a clear visual cue of when a character can/can't communicate, plus a failproof combo of stun+cablecuffs to prevent people from immediately yelling out (which is the lamest thing ever). The justification for it, obviously, would be that headsets are touch/button-activated, so you'd need your hands free to use one.
Chaznoodles Posted January 6, 2016 Posted January 6, 2016 I'd say this would work best if you could not use the radio whilst stunned, weakened, or exhausted. That rules in all three stun types. Put this in conjunction to not being able to use the radio whilst cuffed, and you silence both fuckboy criminals who insist on screeching for their metafriend crewmembers to release them, and antag targets until they get the headset off.
Skull132 Posted January 6, 2016 Posted January 6, 2016 if (user.weakened || user.Restrained()) #return 0 Probably covers everything forever and ever~ (Note that all types of stunning use weakened to make you unable to resist anymore. So does too much pain.) I don't really mind either which way. we'll see what other opinions get posted.
Owen Posted January 6, 2016 Posted January 6, 2016 I have not experienced this as an issue very often but, I am not against it at all as it makes sense.
LordFowl Posted January 6, 2016 Posted January 6, 2016 This only really makes sense if we accept that you turn your radio headset on via a physical action (Such as pressing a button). This is the most popular scenario amongst roleplayers anyways, so I further add on to this suggestion that you should be unable to use your radio if your hand functions are inhibited, such as when you are handcuffed or if you are missing your hands.
Fire and Glory Posted January 7, 2016 Posted January 7, 2016 If this goes through, can you add an exception for the loss of one or two legs? If someone loses his leg through one way or another and gets left there then he's kinda doomed, I'd figure that after the initial shock of falling over I'd be able to maneuver my hands to my headset and scream for medical to get me before I bleed out. (Or I'm a robot and I'm lying there forever because I can't bleed.)

This seems good. Anyways, the idea's pretty smart and would avoid powergamers from trying to get the antag valid and outed early on.

Also, I'm sure they're separate bits of code, but make sure that intercoms and station bounced radios can still be operated while their microphone is on by people under these restrictions. They're area-based when used, not manually operated, so there's no reason they wouldn't pick up somebody who was restrained.
Guest Menown Posted January 7, 2016 Posted January 7, 2016 This'll really ruin the quirks of a few characters who're "cute because they say cute things when the mic is accidentally on"
Xelnagahunter Posted January 7, 2016 Posted January 7, 2016 This'll really ruin the quirks of a few characters who're "cute because they say cute things when the mic is accidentally on" Both that and miscomms can be explained by buttons getting stuck.
CakeIsOssim Posted January 7, 2016 Posted January 7, 2016 I'm 90% certain this is already a thing. My source for this being a heist round where I was pinned to a wall, stunbatoned, and attempted to request backup. No radio feedback, just resulted in me saying "Help me, you useless shits" out loud to the Vox ripping me apart.

I left out a bunch of context for the sake of staying on topic. Vox were spearing some doctor after I retreated because they outnumbered me, I moved back in to help the doctor, stunned three of them with my carbine, got pinned to a wall, and it was downhill from there. They didn't take my radio at all, because it was still on my old body after I was rebuilt. Whipped out the ol' baton in attempt to buy some time to unpin myself, got disarmed, stunned, and then tried to call for backup. Didn't work... No radio feedback, just resulted in me saying "Help me, you useless shits" out loud to the Vox ripping me apart.

But it oddly enough only happened when the Vox pinned me to the wall and then when I was trying to call for help it ended up with me yelling out to them. I was confused at the time but didn't think too much of it. It could however, be broken in someway. But yeah, I really like this idea of not being able to talk into a radio if something like that happens.

It is a thing (Just not as all-encompassing as the suggestion would like), I'm just not sure what the circumstances of triggering it are.
UnknownMurder Posted January 8, 2016 Posted January 8, 2016 +1 There's no way you can try to call for help while being wrestled to the floor. Although, it gives the antagonist a slight advantage to make the round interesting. Had the victim call out for help while being shot or attacked is kind of silly and annoying.

Yeah, I was thinking it like this. If someone was already talking and they were shot or something, the message would automatically send and it would put a "-" at the end saying that the person cut off mid sentence.
Garnascus Posted January 8, 2016 Posted January 8, 2016 I have wanted this forever. Please god yes. Its already stressful enough antagging. It just makes it worse that once you make your move on your topic his gonna scream and six security guards will run to your location to collect valids.

They have this on Goon (I think, might've been a diff. codebase) and it's legitimately the most annoying shit in the code.
EvilBrage Posted January 8, 2016 Posted January 8, 2016 Use a radio jammer if you're not robust enough to snag the headset before they can talk. You can even create the improvised version if you don't have an antag uplink.

But it makes sense to me. Why do you think it is annoying?
