[Resolved] Ban Request - Jesse Armstrong
Ornias replied to Aaron J. Hughes's topic in Complaints Boards Archive
I was the diona antagonist that round, Wearing Face Over Mask. Jesse Armstrong did not handle this situation properly. They made a silly decision (which, in fairness, was backed up by the rest of security, who were all in a position to deny the order) which resulted in the deaths of three people. I didn't like that they beat down my nymph pile, but in fairness, that's pretty much expected at this point, and I don't blame them for acting like that. I defended myself afterwards and the situation was dealt with ICly. HOWEVER. This is the first time I've ever had any form of negative interaction with them. Now, maybe it's because I don't play sec enough, but every interaction I've had with them (antag or not) bar this one has been enjoyable. They've shown understanding of how a detective should work in the past, and feels (while a little hands on, perhaps) like someone who genuinely cares about trying to play a detective rather than just an officer with a cool coat. This specific incident, while poor play, is by no means indicative of how he usually performs. I have off-days too. It was dealt with at the time and should be kept that way. I think calling them a 'toxic player' without talking to them about it over PMs or in LOOC is a little silly. People can't improve if you don't tell them how they can improve, and jumping to a player complaint feels like a drastic step. -
Server Culture and its Effects on RP and Power Gaming
Ornias replied to Bygonehero's topic in General
I actually take a bit of issue with the idea that characters need to 'progress' mechanically. If you make a character who moves from an assistant to a medical intern, keep them a medical intern. Or, keep them a medical intern until they've been playing long enough to become a paramedic or such. To become a, say, GP medical doctor, requires a doctorate. To become a surgeon requires another. To become a virologist requires another. To become a geneticist requires another. To become a chemist requires another. Nobody is going to acquire these skills across the course of playing on-station. Personally, I want to see LESS mechanical progression, full stop. It should take a long time to teach even basic skills in the medical, robotics, research, or other highly specialised departments. The idea of someone going from assistant to CMO across the course of a year is not feasible at all. Go from an assistant to an intern, maybe to paramedic after a while. Play it for the character, not for the abilities and status that character gains. At least that's what I think. And even a CMO knowing how to do everything in a department is over the top, even if you're an ancient Skrell genius. Nobody could learn EVERYTHING there is about doctoring without being a supragenius. We ain't that. -
[Denied] Awesomeguy002's Head of Staff Application
Ornias replied to awesomeguy002's topic in Whitelist Applications Archives
Hey, lucky thing I happened to be scrolling through the Reddit, huh? Two quotes from this also: "He had O- blood, Blonde hair and was 20 years old. Nursing Intern", and "I put a small amount Ethanol in a couple of his tablets and blamed it on the Machine being faulty." Normally I love joking around ICly. But here, you're just shit-talking a player trying to play their character because you don't like what they decided to do. If they have O- blood and are 20 years old, chances are they're new. They confirmed ICly that they signed up recently. They were trying to get involved by making a flawed character, and yet you take this interaction as an opportunity to use IC to ridicule their character OOCly, instead of trying to have ANY KIND OF MEANINGFUL INTERACTION with them. You looked at them, realized they didn't fit in with what you wanted, and so bullied them. You screenshotted doing this and posted it on Reddit of all places, to further ridicule him. I don't want someone who would trashtalk and discourage a new player, or ANY player in a head of staff position, let alone for something so small, and DOUBLY SO FOR DOING IT PUBLICLY. You don't like someones character? Talk to them about it, adminhelp it if it's severe enough, or toughen the fuck up. Strong -1. Heads of Staff are meant to help new players, not bully them because they dared to try something new. -
Reporting Personnel: Luka Brala Rank of Reporting Personnel: Head of Personnel Game ID: b08-avsK Personnel Involved: (Name, Rank: Offender/Witness/Other (Ckey)) - Luka Brala, Reporting Party - Ciara Greenwood, Witness - Serena Johnson, Offender Time of Incident: Friday 23 June 2459, 21:00 NTT Real time: 3:55 GMT Location of Incident: Cargo Bay Nature of Incident: []Workplace Hazard []Accident/Injury []Destruction of Property [x]Neglect of Duty [x]Harassment []Assault [x]Misconduct []Other _____ (Place an x in the box that applies. If other, replace line and specify.) Overview of the Incident: At the start of the shift, following with my job requirements, I began to organize the departments, setting quotes and requirements for the day. I asked over the supply radio for no supplies to be delivered until I had spoken with the department face-to-face, and went to speak with the stations chef. After I returned and arrived at cargo, I greeted everyone, and saw Miss Johnson sorting the station supplies by forcefully throwing them about the room. I requested that she be gentle with the equipment that she was sorting three times, each time ignored, until she threw two fragile MMI units. When she did finally respond, she asked me whether I wanted to do it. She was continually disrespectful to me, swearing repeatedly and ignoring my requests, until she eventually made a point of throwing them as far as she could without organization, before announcing that she 'quits', and walking off. I gave her the chance to return to work, to which she replied she was on break, and when I told her I had not cleared her for break she stated she was on strike. With no other option I cleared her termination for the shift and called her to my office to hand in her things. She came to my window, threw her PDA at the sliding door (while wearing only her undergarments, may I add), and stomped off. Throughout this, she continued to demean me over the radio, including calling me a "mouth-breathing bureaucrat". Her payroll was revoked, and she was terminated for the shift. Did you report it to a Head of Department or IAA? If so, who?: Only myself. There was no IAA or captain aboard at the time. Actions taken: Shift-long suspension for her actions. Additional notes: I do not consider myself to be rude or abrasive in my work, and while I respect employees disagreeing with me I do not respect it when people are rude and slanderous without reason.

Nah, that's just conjecture. Let's look at the server rules page real quick, which I've organized into the relevant ones for convenience. No believable character would ever realistically experiment on themselves without good reason, certainly not with something they suspect will transform them into a non-human slime-being for no reason whatsoever. I've tried to be sympathetic with you on-server, but really man, it's heavy roleplay. You don't experiment on yourself in your workplace. I'll be incredibly surprised if you were actually warned unless you responded rudely. You were no longer human, so sec were by station regulations well within their rights to arrest you and science was well within their rights to experiment on you. Also: Try not to mix up IC and OOC stuff. People play some pretty rude characters who are lovely people.

Currently, Journalism suffers from a few disadvantages that make the job both pretty hard and less engaging. Job Slot: For some reason the journalist job-slot overlaps with the slot for librarian, which means that a journalist who has no interest in hanging around the library is taking a librarians slot, and vice versa. I think it would make more sense if the journalist got their own job slot (or two, to allow for competition), and a very small room (especially considering all the maint tunnels we have, it would be easy to fit) equipped with a table, chair, newscaster, camera, lamp, and recorder. As a followup, the camera and recorder would be removed from the library back-room. Newcasters: Other stations have implemented features to make newscasters feel more like actual news sites, rather than just random ramblings. These include comments sections on articles and a view counter. Further, the input method is a one-line hard-to-modify line which erases EVERYTHING on occassion, with no way to edit articles that have mistakes. A proper interface, and way to edit articles with a view-history could easily solve this issue. Finally, pictures attached to newscasters are limited in that they only display the picture itself - none of the text you get from examining it. If there was a way to fix this, then the news would be a lot more user-friendly. Journalistic Ability: Journalists are often very limited in what they're allowed to do when it comes to antagonists if security is already on the scene. Although many HoS's and officers are very eager to allow criminals to be interviewed, it is very rare that they will allow journalists anywhere near antagonist actions as they are going on. That does make a lot of sense, and I'm not begrudging anyone for that, but it often means that journalists have no choice but to get third-party and biased reports on the situation. On the flipside, the most memorable moment I've had as a journalist was when a Head of Security (I think Dylan Sutton, but if it was someone else I apologise!) gave me a security vest labelled 'press' and allowed me in to photograph and document a combat situation. If a vest was avaliable in the Head of Securities locker for that purpose, or some other precedent was set to allow journalists to enter these more combat-heavy areas, it could greatly benefit their work, which is just as much an OOC job as an IC one. As it stands, Journalist is one of the most underplayed jobs because of how hard and draining it is to do properly. If we made these changes to allow it to be easier to get into, then we might see more journalists running around.

I like the thought behind this, but I can see that the application may not be as great. This would provide a huge boost in power to different races, and would mean that a bulky head of security couldn't tackle down a passing janitor Unathi. And I have a feeling that it would even further mess up our combat meta, because an Unathi wouldn't need weapons when they can just charge-bash any criminal scum they see. I love the idea of more combat mechanics, because I feel that they're painfully sparse and could greatly benefit from more choices and options, but I'm not sure this would be the best way to go about it.

Despite this feeling rather sparse, I'll easily give a +1. Phoebe is believable and enjoyable to interact with, especially because of the conflict my character and her have. Actually, I'll only give a +1 if you stop wearing the cat on your head, or agree to wear it during surgery thank you -
Actually, going to go slightly against what DatBerry said to distinguish our points of view. I like your character. If someone can't handle someone being an asshole ICly, it means that either: a) You're being too abusive. b) You're being too obstructive to what they want to achieve as their character. c) They can't work out how to differentiate between your IC attitude and OOC attitude. Read: We're a roleplay server. We're playing characters. You should not need to limit yourself to playing a likable character just because people can't handle a confrontational and dickish character. Rule 1 is for OOC, not IC. If you went out of your way to call one person a cunt every round and ruin their day, then there would be an issue. If you genuinely intended to ruin peoples rounds, then there would be an issue. But as it stands, the main issue people have is c), at least from what I've experienced (obviously I don't have a PhD in Hammerstein Theory). If Hammerstein became a head of staff, I feel it would conflict with b), and then there would be fair reason to complain. You're ready for a head of staff position, easily, but Hammerstein isn't. I don't think he'll ever be. He's made to be a dickish and obstructive character (GREAT! We need more of those!), but if you put him in a position where he CAN be obstructive, then people will begin to take genuine issues with him, including me.
-
If you'd made this before your last player complaint, I would have given a strong -1. But, as it stands, after all the desire to improve I've seen and your explanation, I'm going to give a +1. But I'm going to implore you to pick a different character to elevate to be head of staff. I like Hammerstein, genuinely, and a small number of my characters even like him ICly (Astor, Joie, and Serena). He is a very fun character to interact with - my personal favorite interactions with you are when Hammerstein is going over the top trying to prove that he's better than his coworkers, such as one incident where you ranted to me about various mundane facts about exosuits as if they were legendary and esoteric knowledge. After I mentioned it in LOOC, you let me work on exosuits, you gave me room to do my only job whenever you could, and despite your character being a jerk ICly I still very much enjoy interaction with him. That said, I don't want him to be a head of staff. Jerk heads of staff are good, so long as they're either incredibly well done or are very easy to work around. That extra bit of conflict with someone who believes they're superior and has the power to back it up is great, really. But you've got to be able to be swayed - if you're a dick with no way to work around it or appeal to their 'better nature', then people will begin to feel frustrated. Further, I can see why people would dislike Hammerstein OOCly - IC conflict can lead to OOC frustration very easily. I've had several people message me privately after IC conflict with some of my more crass characters, and had to explain to them that it was all IC. I don't begrudge them - it's the nature of the game that you project yourself onto your characters, and thus people rightly assume that other people do the same. I'd definitely advise going out of your way to talk to people in LOOC whenever you do something which could be considered rude, cruel, or abusive, because having a friendly chat in LOOC when being a dick IC can alleviate that stress and show the difference between character and player. Basically, Hammerstein is a fun character. But he's too far off the mark to be a head of staff. Keep playing him, definitely. Make a jerk head of staff, full steam ahead. But you can be a jerk who is easy to work with, someone who's racist, sexist, but knows how to put the job first so they don't get fired. TL;DR: +1 with another character, but don't stop playing Hammerstein or I'll be sad

Gonna throw in my two cents here. Having powerful antagonists is equal parts a boon and a risk. It's a boon because it means the antagonists can tell a compelling story and be genuine threats to the station, without needing to be worried about their story being cut off by an officer emptying a laser carbine into them when they're typing. If the community was perfect, and everyone on-server was an excellent roleplayer, I'd be in full support of giving antagonists some pretty unfair firepower against the station, with the understanding that they'd use it to create some very enjoyable scenarios and set themselves realistic weaknesses. Unfortunately, and I see where Delta is coming from, not every player is experienced enough to do that, and a pretty sizable chunk don't want to (including players migrating from other servers where antagonists are more win-focused), so antagonists are still limited in power. Tough enough to take on the crew, but if the crew organizes themselves the antagonist will almost always lose, and will always be at a huge disadvantage. Gamemodes like traitor, rev, and cult tend to be more chaotic gamemodes because the teams aren't always "on the same page" and are often underpowered when they face the crew head-on. Revolutionaries may all be fighting as antagonists, but it's rare that they're all rallied behind the same common cause, and without any additional power they need to push hard in order to stand a chance against the station. Traitors very rarely bother with the codewords or trying to work together, and need to fight hard if they want to stand a chance against an organized security team, no matter what kind of neat toys they get. And cults, even though arguably very powerful, basically need to be stealthy and ganky to be able to advance. You can disagree with me on that, but cults are given tools like the stun talisman and convert rune for a reason. Now, I think Crossfire has both the highest and lowest potential out of practically any roundtype (with the exception of, say, Paranoia). Mercs are powerful. Heisters are powerful. Working together, they can take down a station pretty consistently (unless the station REALLY gets their shit together). But, if disorganized, then it can very, very quickly take on the worst aspects of most gamemodes - overpowered murderbone simulation. I think there should be more encouragement for the two of them to communicate and build a solid reason for them both being there at the same time. Even just red text on spawn, "REMEMBER TO PLAN WITH THE HEISTERS/MERCS". At it's best, we're going to see two teams of antagonists who can make the game interesting for an even wider selection of people on station because of their superior firepower and numbers. But I'm going to bet that Delta was unlucky enough to experience the bad end of the type - two groups who were uncoordinated and out for blood, who weren't exactly going out of their way to make a story so much as to kill the crew. I'm glad that Crossfire exists. It doesn't need to be removed - but it needs to be carefully watched over in order to ensure that the teams are doing what antagonists are supposed to do here: make the round fun. After all, a storytelling experience is where Aurora shines. Otherwise we'd all be playing on servers more dedicated to the combat.

BYOND Key: Ornias Character Names: Astor Noton, Joie Desai, Pining For The Lost Days, Luka Brala, Mitchell Guess Species you are applying to play: Unathi. What color do you plan on making your first alien character (Dionaea & IPCs exempt): Orange-brown. Have you read our lore section's page on this species?: Yes, all of them. Please provide well articulated answers to the following questions in a paragraph format. One paragraph minimum per question Why do you wish to play this specific race: I recently applied to play as IPC's, and despite the whitelist being accepted, I did not particularly enjoy playing them and have not done so much. I, in a way, dislike too much openness, because in a way it feels almost more restrictive than having strict guidelines (not that that makes any sense) - I want to make more dynamic characters, who can be believable and "human" but at the same time have that alien twist to them. Unathi have for a long time seemed very interesting to me, and I have finally decided to apply for them. Identify what makes role-playing this species different than role-playing a Human: Where to start? For the big things, they come from a completely different culture, having their own set of morals and traditional standards. They have recently come out of a nuclear holocaust and have faced great cultural backlash as a result. They have a different mindset, being alien, to human life, which I intend to play to the best of it's ability. Character Name: Erakirali Kire'aka Please provide a short backstory for this character, approximately 2 paragraphs Kire'aka was born a short time before the outbreak of the Contact War, and grew up experiencing less of it that others might have - born in Janvir, and living slightly to the side of it, he was fortunate enough to be out of the way of the majority of fighting - most of the men went off to war, but little fighting happened around his tribe. Not understanding, even as he grew towards adulthood, the horrors of the war, he was excited to fight for his tribe against the Izweski Hegemony upon reaching adulthood. However, fighting ended slightly before his eighteenth, and he still regrets not being able to help his brothers on the battlefield. His new plan in life, decided as much by his elders as him, was to attempt to keep their tribe alive and strong through the traditional means - political marriage and work. This essentially meant undergoing a political marriage to a neighboring tribeswoman named Trashizi Kesri'shra and looking for oppertunity to bring in funds for the tribe to deal with the new, struggling economy of Moghes. Fortunately, an oppertunity would present itself within the year, allowing for Kire'aka to move into Biesel space and begin schooling in Research & Development. This was not a small decision on anyones part, least of all the tribe which was forced to scrounge hoarded resources together to allow for what they gravely hoped would be a great return on investment. This would, altogether, prove to be successful, with Kire'aka achieving a PhD and moving into work at the first company that he could be hired too - Nanotrasen. Now living comfortably with his tribe providing a boon to their survivability and wellbeing, he donates a majority of his income to those that gave him the oppertunity to expand his horizons. He lives in a large home by the standards of his tribe, and is acknowledged as an important individual among them, but lacks the social experience during his time of schooling to progress up the social ladder. As it stands now, he has a relatively stable life in his tribe, but hopes to one day rise further up, and expand his tribe outwards. The below is more on his personality, because I appreciate that the above doesn't provide as much information as it perhaps should on how he will actually act. Kire'aka is, for all intents and purposes, strongly traditionalist - a strong believer in honor and traditional values. However, his time schooling in Biesel and experiencing the outside world has definitely left a mark, although not one that would tarnish his reputation in any capacity. He is accepting of the idea of females of other species working aboard Nanotrasen stations, but still believes the idea of female Unathi working to be abhorrent, and females working in security still makes him uncomfortable. However, despite being unable to hide his disgust at seeing female Unathi working (except for as chefs, or even bartenders), especially in more scientific or otherwise strongly literate fields, he puts up with it and does not go out of his way to highlight his dislike of the matter. He also believes himself a warrior, as any true Unathi should. He would happily lay down his life for the good of his tribe, and will defend himself should he be attacked by any force mundane. Not that he's good enough to stand a chance against a security officer trained in modern combat, and certainly not a chance in hell against a trained agent of - say - the Syndicate, should they by a million-to-one chance show up on the station. (This is basically just saying that he will defend himself, but never actually attempt to take down an antag.) One thing that he does strongly struggle with, and will show, is a disgust of Guwan working as anything above the lowest of roles. Seeing this feels like a deliberate insult to Kire'aka, and despite explanation and his time in Biesel sees no reason why Nanotrasen would purposely disgrace themselves to hire them - nineteen years of growing up traditionally made it very hard for him to understand that other races do not view Guwan the same way that Unathi do. He is also a Th'akh, who depends strongly on his shaman for guidance. His time apart from the shaman was perhaps the hardest part of his schooling. He follows the obvious belief that synthetics do not possess souls and are not truly sentient, but has no problem with robotic limbs - growing up unexposed to even the concept, his first true time considering it was on Biesel without his tribes opinion. His relationship with his wife remains quite ordinary as far as marriage among Unathi is concerned - while strongly political, he would easily die to protect his wife both for honor and for genuine affection towards her. He will have children, but due to feeling that he should be there to teach and raise his children as warriors, he is waiting until his tribe is more sustainable and self-sufficient before he takes time off to raise them. Finally, on a face-to-face level he is relatively outgoing. He is eager to make connections, especially among other Unathi, and to show his tribe in a good light. He enjoys reading and writing, but against reason does not like computer-printed writing and will not read it unless needed for work or other important reasons. Essentially, he is an Unathi who tries very, very hard to remain loyal to his tribe and traditional roots - even if that means acting in ways he would not like (see: working with women, using computers) in order to bring the most honor and success to those he cares for. What do you like about this character? I'm going to be honest, I just want to bully Guwan. That's all I want. Alright, maybe a bit more than that. I want to see more traditional Unathi who are trying to adapt to this new space-age that they've been thrust into. Before reading up on Unathi lore, I didn't even understand the full implications of the Contact War, or just how important it really was to Unathi. I didn't understand the full concept of their honor, or of their traditions. I think that by playing a character like this, I can change that a bit. How would you rate your role-playing ability? 9/10 boys. Notes: I'm a bit unsure about the naming scheme, that's basically the only thing I don't feel comfortable about. Much love.

as we all know, nanako b is quite an important character in mouse lore, and i'm not so sure how it would factor into gameplay if your character knows someone like that. perhaps replace them with someone less notable in the same field, such as nanako d or nanako h? still, aside from that, +1

The plan is for a pretty mundane personality, considering that it's an Industrial IPC which makes it, by design, less "human". Loaded with a supply of bartending knowledge, a brief understanding of recent events, hobbies, and history, and understanding the basics of how a conversation works, but not much else. Hate Messages: "I am sorry. Please tell me how I can improve so that I may submit this information back for later product tests. Would you like a drink?" Attacks: "I am sorry. Please cease within the next thirty seconds or I shall be forced to file a: Security Complaint." Negatory, it was built and put into practice very recently. Definitely more the latter, but it will be able to identify who associates with it frequently and remember basic information about them. I'm definitely going for a less human and more "machine with a twinge of feelings and sentience". The latter again. It's not complex enough to form long-term goals or values, let alone work out a coherent way to follow through with them. Only if accepted thank you -

No. It will ask directions continually. Every round? You may find yourself getting particularly tired of that, especially in the occasions that nobody responds. Might want to alter the specifics of that particular issue. you underestimate my stubbornness to remain in character. legit, though, i considered that, but i'm honestly fine. being a diona and being slow as fuck gets tiring, but it's part of the role i want to play. appreciate the heads up though. -

My bad for not wording it correctly. That was what was originally planned for, but they realised the drawbacks on the first day of field-testing. It was stripped of all security programming (bar the very fundamentals such as corporate regulations so that it can obey them). It will have no training except for bartending and lifting crates and getting lost. -
