/!\ READ - STATE OF TAJARAN /!\
LetzShake replied to Susan's topic in Whitelist Applications Archives
It's been said a few times, but essentially, I like the idea of Tajaran as oppressed second class (at best) citizens who are not treated very well. HOWEVER. I do not think in a professional environment, loud, overt racism should be the norm. I think, realistically, the kind of racism that should exist in the game is quiet racism. You know the kind. The kind that exists in the real world. The kind where if you see a Tajaran on your shuttle, you kinda move to the other side or clutch your bag a little closer. the kind where, while it's not impossible for an individual to become a token head of staff like Ana or Houssam, it's not common (I think we've done a good job of this so far). And despite it being retconned, I don't think a Tajaran head of security is a bad idea because that position requires a loyalty implant. I think that'd make it one of the first head positions likely to get a 'token' member. HOWEVER I also think that 'Cat' shouldn't be treated as a proper racial slur by NT. Or at least not yet. Social progress isn't that fast, but it's something I think we have a unique opportunity to play out over time on this server. Calling a Taj a cat or an Unathi a lizard shouldn't be 'the N word times a hundred'. But it should not be reasonable for a Tajran to say "please don't call me that." and then file a formal complaint when it doesn't stop. Unfortunately this raises another issue. Formal IC complaints tend to carry almost no weight. So I agree, that I think too many people play Tajaran as a little too free-wheeling and forget where they came from, but I also think that SOME characters like this are realistic and expected. Look at the real world. Some members of marginalized groups respond by quietly living out their lives and doing the best they can. Some crack. Some turn to crime. Some become loud, angry, belligerent and RAH RAH FIGHT THE POWAH. Almost never, however, do they turn to physical violence against racism, and when they do they get shitcanned mighty quick. TL;DR: I love Xeno-Racism. But it's not realistic for it to be this loud. I like Tajara as a marginalized group, and we shouldn't get away from that but we shouldn't expect everyone to be a uniform submissive janitor. I think people are getting too personal in this, on both sides. -
People keep coming back to the pink fur, for some reason. It's a genetics modification not really any different than any of the others geneticists spam. Would we strip whitelist from anyone else who does that? There'd be a lot of homeless Research Directors.
-
So she genetically modified herself like every geneticist and their dog does. I've never seen her take a nap on a desk in front of the brig, I was talking about my own experiences, not anybody else's, as I said. I don't think a female tajara rolling down a jumpsuit is any less professional than any male doing it, given, again, they have no breasts as far as I'm aware, and no visible nipples. So if anything, it's even less revealing than a human male. I'm just saying that I've never seen Safiya act in a way outside of what I would expect from any other player on this server, except that she seems to consistently be roleplaying in the times I've seen her, which is more than can be said for a lot of people. So you say "Pink, Naked, Telekinetic, Cat" to try and make some grand point but lets break it down. Naked? No. I've never seen her naked during a shift and I don't think anyone else claims to either. Telekinetic? Yeah her and every geneticist since genetics was implemented 100 years ago on goon. So it comes down to pink cat. Hardly the most snowflakey thing we've got going on this server. Even taken together that's probably not the most snowflakey character on the server at any given moment. So if we're all willing to sit down and change how genetics, in general, is treated, I don't think this complaint holds much water. Maybe I just sympathize too much. I've been a community pariah (not here) before and it's not a nice feeling to get put under the microscope to a degree well past others.
-
I feel like a lot of this complain is just based on The Furry being... a furry. Rather than actually doing anything wrong. Again, maybe I haven't seen enough, but I think terms like 'cat-ear-clitorises' are just symptomatic of finding trouble where there isn't trouble. I say this as someone who has done very little in the way of romantically themed RP with any of my characters on Aurora. This isn't because I think sexually charged 'furry' characters are a thing we want. I just don't think these things are going down that path as much as you do. My only experiences with Safiya have seen the character acting professional. And I'm pretty quick to be suspicious of people who do the dumb. I just think maybe it should be considered, if he had a different username would this discussion be happening? Or at least would it be framed this way? I don't think it would.
-
I don't know, to be honest, I haven't seen any sex crazedness from them, but that's just my experience from ghosting a few rounds and RPing with them once or twice. Not to say they don't often have thirsty 'suitors' on Safiya's heels but I haven't seen anything a bit sexual happen. Also Tajara don't have breasts, do they? They probably don't have the same taboo about toplessness.
-
I've only seen Safiya pink and glowing once. I can kinda see the Pink thing being something someone might reasonably do to themselves if there's a stable, safe way to do it (I don't understand genetics well enough to know how to test for other side effects) BUT I am against the liberal distribution of powers that often comes with genetics fiddling. Not Safiya specifically but geneticists in general. I thought about writing up a complaint about a particular doctor who used his powers to dump all of chemistry's things into disposals because he didn't like something I said, but instead I just gave him a swirlie. Because people can have outrageous hair colors, they do that all the time. But I really don't know about how easily people take to being genetically modified that heavily. That said I think The Furry gets put under the microscope a lot more, consciously or not, because of his ill-advised username. I think I've seen a LOT of geneticists consistently chucklefuck around a lot more with powers and shit like that throughout my time here, and only really get in trouble if a hulk goes batshit on the station too many times. I don't think Safiya is more of an offensive standout than your typical geneticist, and if you want to do anything, genetics itself is the place to start.

[ACCESS:NEWHIRE.TAINA.VA] ALERT: All TAINAVA agents must abide by confidentiality agreements. Do not disclose the nature of this agency to anyone but your direct superiors within this agency. Violators will be faced with termination or imprisonment. LOGIN> GUEST PASSWORD> ************* ACCESS LEVEL> NEW HIRE ACCESS Limited. First time user detected.... Welcome, new hire! If you are here this means you have chosen or been chosen to serve in the Terrorist Attack and Infiltration Network, Asessement of Vulnerability Agency. As you were informed during your orientation, we are a covert agency within Nanotrasen that probes installations in Nanotrasen-controlled space for weaknesses in security and procedure via simulated infiltration or attacks. You were chosen not for potential combat prowess but either skill in infiltration and stealth or experience aboard Nanotrasen vessels. Your knowledge will be put to the test. Intimate familiarity with Nanotrasen stations and procedure are of the utmost importance for these missions. Missions are self-assigned. Each comes with its own pay based on value and difficulty. In addition to financial reward, TAINAVA guarantees immunity to prosecution for all crimes committed during the course of officially sanctioned operations. Penalties will be taken from pay for any TAINAVA regulations violated during the course of a mission. Honesty is expected, as dishonesty in reports will be met with termination not only from the agency but revokation of criminal immunity and full prosecution under Nanotrasen Corporate Regulations. Bear in mind that this does not guarantee immunity from arrest and action by station crews, simply any legal proceedings once the standard shift has ended. Welcome. Please make sure to review TAINAVA Agent Guidelines before accepting any tasks. Violations may result in penalties against levied against your pay. ACCESS ASSIGNMENTS [[OOC: Thought I'd try something a little different for all you people out there who want to play Antag but don't want to feel like you have to kill people and blow shit up! I'll be including a Bounty Board document (still working on it) that explains the different tasks, bonuses and penalties. ALSO, please post in this thread if you want your character added to the Bounty Board as a Bonus kidnapping or assassination target. Also, please note, as of right now, this group's existence as an NT agency is NOT canon. If you complete an antag shift as a TAINAVA agent, post a brief report of what you did, along with an list of your assignments completed here. Proof would be nice, but I'm not that hung up on it, this is just for roleplay purposes! ]]

If this was the Rev game I was in... yeah this is super understandable, Here's the problem with RP Rev at large. I don't know how to solve it. The revs are NOT the antags, even if they're handled as antags. The heads and security are ultimately the antags. So is acting against them really self-antagging? And if it is, doesn't this mean the heads and security are self-antagging even harder because they're always happy to shoot and harmbaton anyone who they don't like and run the station into the ground?\ I was in that round, and even before I was brought into the revolutionary fold, I think I would've ended up fighting security in that round because they were behaving like absolute maniacs.

You just use set pose, and write that your character's asleep at their desk or whatever. People don't use it, but the feature is there.

I think we should discourage bombing as antags, rather than encourage it. -

By that logic you do recognize Tajarans and Unathis wouldn't be in head roles either, yes? Yes, I know Tajaran and Unathi are very vulnerable to hackers. But seriously though, no. They aren't as new to things as IPCs are, and they also are biological. They aren't 'new and experimental', really. Tajara have been in contact with humanity for a while now.
-
So, humans can learn Siik'maas just fine, though they would not be able to speak it fully. this was all I could think of.
-
Is there an actual reason as to why you don't like IPCs as heads? Besides "the thought of a machine being my boss makes me uncomfortable." You've been very adamant in saying "I don't like this" without giving a coherent reason as to why, and then going on to assume that you have a final say in the matter. As Gollee said, it's the community that dictates the lore. Not the writers. The writers apply what needs to be changed as is their job to analyze whether the lore is good or not. IPCs not being heads makes sense, to me, because they're still very new and experimental and we're not sure of their vulnerabilities to being hacked or whatever. as Dea said
-
The community should dictate the lore, not the other way round, in the end, the lore is a tool for players to use for roleplay, not the 10 commandments Absolutely this. While the lore writers are important, I don't think they should just be able to essentially dictate rules, unilaterally. And I think a lore writer who is unwilling to listen to the community probably isn't fit for their position.
-
Sums it up perfectly, really. I think it's just kinda forced to make restrictions tighter than this. It seems like forced unnecessary racism for the sake of it.
-
In my experience, the opposite problem happens more often. The AI stealths until "FIVE MINUTES UNTIL EVERYONE DIES". So there are two options. Metagame, and make preparations for malf beforehand, which is bad an unacceptable. Or die.
-
Baka is pretty much a perfect example of what to look for in a mod. They've got it all.
-
I still gotta +1 this. Jackboot is someone who I've always respected as very knowledgeable and fairly level headed, and good about RP. Dude's great.
-
That is because every other round can work with a single antag, except maybe Cult. I wouldn't be surprised if cult didn't function without enough people readied up but that doesn't happen because Cult isn't a horrible mode that half the server hates. So there's that. But that's absolutely true, if you don't like it, don't play it. But the difference is Nuke requires a minimum number, because of sheer mechanics. It doesn't work, as a mode, without enough people. So it can be voted for by a simple majority but it can't actually function with one. This isn't about manipulating ready up status. It's about the fact that the number of people needed to play nuke and the number of people needed to SELECT nuke are not the same. So sometimes the game type will be voted for when there aren't enough people to play it. That's not manipulation. You can't FORCE people to play a game mode they loathe.
-
This is the opposite of metagaming. This is sticking to your character's knowledge base. And Nuke Ops who go from 0 to exploding armory and cargo. It goes both ways. This is why Nuke isn't fun. And as for what some people said about this thread containing forbidden knowledge? Keeping game mechanics a mystery isn't any more conducive to good RP. There's some knowledge people should have. Like that. I'm sure Nanotrasen gives crew basic training on how to deal with an AI since it's something every single crew member will come into contact with at some point.

I thought the shuttles didn't gib anymore. Guess I was wrong. Also, remembered another one. Walked into a heavily griefed toxins storage where a maintenance drone was releasing plasma. I had internals on so i was okay but while moving cannisters around to try and start cleaning the air in science I blocked myself in. I took the chance to grab the drone and destroy it. I forgot that attacking drones makes them spark.
