how did you even find this. that's amazing. that's exactly how it should look. With this visual reference, i'm sold.

I agree with the asessment that it's pointless and annoying, but not with the conclusion that it needs to be removed. It has on occasion, provided interesting fun moments. Like the time a dinnerware dispenser threw a knife at the chef which embedded in her chest, and she had to come to medical and get it removed. Then a visitor stole the knife and got arrested because i thought she'd been attacked and that it was evidence i agree that just tossing random bandages and coke cans all over the floor is pointless though. I have a few ideas to beef it up: 1. Have it affect fewer machines. Far fewer. like maybe a quarter of the ones it does now 2. Have it be a threat, not just an annoyance. For example: Glass bottles of dylovene launched at people should shatter on impact and cut them, as well as spreading broken glass and fluids on the floor. A bottle of soporific should drug you with the stuff and send you to sleep Coffee launched from a machine should be boling hot, and cause burns by splattering on impact, plus mess Coke cans launched from it should just plain hurt more. And stun you too. Taking a coke can to the head when you're off guard, should knock you off your feet Making the machines both fewer, and a more serious threat, should give engineering something meaningful to do in protecting the crew. It also gives a janitor more stuff to clean up, they're very often lacking for work and have a tendancy to go SSD or spend the shift screwing around 3. Allow intact items to be picked up and put back into the machine after its fixed. More janitor work, or something any bypasser can do if they dont like the mess 4. Make certain machines immune to it. Like cigarette machines, and the little nanomed machines in medbay (not the big Nanomed plus ones, just the wall mounted ones that look like a medkit. Any machines that don't have some meaningful threat to add, shouldn't be included in the event. plus those mini nanomeds are just far too numerous and hard to track down

i don't see why this would be a downside though, i like the complexity of it. It's engaging to optimise. the dragging canisters around is not fun though i really wish we had a phoron port right there in the room Building forts does sound fun, it's a shame to see all the turrets and such go to waste. I don't think i've ever seen anyone build a turret on aurora. The problem is that requires energy weapons, so it's near impossible to do without notifying security, and any case where they might approve that is one they'd prefer to handle themselves anyway I have an idea that might help remedy it: http://aurorastation.org/forums/viewtopic.php?f=18&t=5677 I would like to see engineering given more freedom, maybe there's a case to make that it should be fortified on account of all the sensitive things there, especially the engine Can you clarify this statement a bit? I do see quite a bit of bombing. You're saying sissy antagonism, i've also seen "antag hugbox" used, which i believe implies the opposite I agree that setting up shield generators jut to not-get-attacked feels a little disappointing. I have seen quite a few situations of raiders bombing the station from the outside, although i've never seen a shield around at these times. I guess it just happens too seldomly to be worth preparing for? Perhaps it could be remedied by making setup easier, such as having a dedicated shield room with the wiring and SMES all setup already can you clarify some of these solutions?

Antagonists usually hit the station unprepared. Either because they start blowing things up really early, or because an extended period of code green gives no legitimate reason to prepare for conflict, we're supposed to RP a normal functioning station where the antags are a rare anomaly This post by 1138 seems to highlight this mentality. And while i don't think there's anything wrong with this style of play, a little difference once in a while couldn't hurt. Siege mode is my idea to give us an opportunity to do something different. How it would work? At the start of the round, or very near the start, there will be a central command update, that unidentified, but probably hostile ships have been seen heading towards the station, and are expected to arrive in about an hour. There would be occasional warnings indicating the ships are closer and giving another ETA. But sometime before arrival (maybe 15 minutes ish) command would issue an update that they've lost track of the ships, and can't tell when they'll arrive, or whether they already have Therefore, for the first hour of the round, the station is going to be on code blue/ Security will order lots of hardsuits and energy weapons, the roboticist will have legitimate reason to build the rarely-seen gygax and durand mechs, science will work overtime on producing high tech weapons, engineering will setup shield generators, upgrade substations, and make sure every department is prepared to cope with power interruption. Medical will produce large quantities of emergency medications, and make sure several people are driving odysseus suits. Turrets will be setup at strategic locations, ED-209s will roam the halls Everyone will spend the first hour preparing for war. After that hour, the antags will arrive. Two, maybe three sets of antagonists will be randomly chosen from the available list, and unleashed upon the station. They might even be enhanced. Cultists could start with a couple of constructs, traitors could be given twice as many points to spend or simply have more traitors, wizards get more spell slots, changelings start with a significant pool of evolution points to spend, etc. Both sides will bring their best, and face off against each other at the peak of their power. Now some technical details. Who will be the antags? A couple of ideas come to mind. First and foremost, some time before the antags arrive (maybe 15-30 minutes in advance) newly joining players will be notified of this, and encouraged to wait around as observers instead of joining the crew. Secondly, in the case of some antags, such as a malfunctioning AI, revolutionaries, changelings, or traitors, those antags would be chosen from people already on the crew, who have opted in to playing that antag during character setup. It can be assumed they've been there all along, but have been waiting for the arriving ship to create an opportunity to get started If there's not enough of a ghost pool, some people who've opted into appropriate antags will be given an automated suggestion to go to cryo, which will cause them to go into storage immediately and respawn as an antag. Most likely, there would be people doing this already without prompting, who know they can go into cryo near the end of the first hour and reliably respawn as an antag. Other antags, like wizard, ninja, and raiders, will start off-station and attempt to insert themselves on the station somehow. The cult here i'd envision as a hostile force, so they'd arrive with lots of runes learned, and some constructs already available Thoughts? Refinements? Improvements?

An odd question to be sure. The common answer you'd think, would be about 70. But if you asked someone that a couple millenia ago, the answer would be closer to 40. Technological advance has steadily increased human lifespans over time, and it is an accelerating thing. In aurora we have miracle medicines like cryoxadone and dexalin, and wierd bioglue that repairs organs. So, 452 years into the future, in aurora's time setting, how long does a human typically live, assuming they have access to all the wonders of modern medical technology? When we have miracle Have the standards of what is "young" and what is "elderly" changed?

Personally i like less detail, characters who have an entire life story including how they heroically did X or how they felt about Y, just feel really wierd. a smaller backstory means more flexibility to adapt to situations, i'd say. And its pretty hard to write one for a vaurca or diona anyway, who already come with their own major restrictions and conventions Penny is probably my favourite character on aurora. We first met when she locked me in the mining outpost for my own safety, as the AI went crazy above (sadly, my two companions insisted on trying to escape and play hero, and i died in that attempt) Since then, we've been through a lot together. The pair of us ran medbay without assistance countless times. She's the droid i'm always happiest to see Regardless of the detail in the character backstory, or lack thereof, i'm confident Chada can do it justice, and even if i do think Psych slots are kind of a waste of people, i'd be happy to see it develop

Sierra's feedback thread, since everyone else is doing it
Nanako replied to SierraKomodo's topic in Character Stories
You've not updated this with some of your more recent characters. Samantha Black is a bureaucratic paperwork fetishist, and a total bitch who makes everyone's lives miserable. When i see her running medbay i just go play engineering sometimes. I feel like she might be better as head of personnel, but maybe that's just a personal desire so that i don't have to deal with her. ECOM is my favouritest AI ever, though. The notifications about wounded and deceased personnel really make my life easier, and ECOM has saved countless people with them. I don't care if others find it annoying, the safety of the crew comes first, and i feel safe with ECOM in charge. It seems stressful to be so proactive though, and ecom does seem to go into storage quite often, which saddens me. There's been a few times i've thought of breaking into the AI core and wiping it, just to get rid of an inept AI so ECOM could take over. -
Locking someone in a room with electrified doors doesn't count as harming them, does it? As long as you continue to provide oxygen, they can theiretically exist there happily for a day or two. If they choose to attempt escape and get shocked, that's self harm

She's nice to have around, and helpful, but quite quiet, i feel. I find some of your other characters more interesting

Nanotrasen Employment Records: Auralia-Fedas Ro'Suos
Nanako replied to Owen's topic in Character Stories
I'm never sure how to address this character. Surnames with an apostrophe in them are such a pain to type. Gender is rather indeterminate too,i thought it was a man all this time I do like her skin though, one of the skrells i can stand to look at. Dom'pesh is such a hideous shade of green -
I think he once spent a whole conversation staring at my ass

I mean, mostly, yea. But it IS still built on voodoo space magic at the core. The supermatter is a magic rock that, when heated, outputs more energy than was put into it, while apparently not being consumed Or maybe it's canon that supermatter is just a really efficient fossil fuel and does get consumed eventually, i'm not 100% certain on that
-
With the mention of organs, i would like to say that trauma kits being a magic fix-all during surgery for all organs instantly, is a bit of a cop out. I'd like to see repairing organ damage be made harder, like requiring specialised single-use equipment, a unique one for each type of organ. so there'd be more reason to cut organs out of corpses or grow them in labs, and transplant them into patients but i also think cloning is a mechanic that massively cheapens death. When an entire security team and command staff gets wiped out, people just drag the corpses into medbay, and then its like an industrial processing line to magically get living crewmen out of them again, with very little personal attention. i don't thinknit should be removed, but maybe massively limited, so that cloning more than 2-3 people per shift would have some significant cost in resources or power, and actually pose a question as to whether it's worth the expense then a geneticist could have more role in producing stem cells, and.or biomass, and whatever other magical biological components would be needed to drive cloning. Chinese geneticists have created supermuscular hulk pigs for the purpose of producing more meat. That's a pretty valid reason to enhance muscle mass of animals. Hulked out monkeys could give more biomass for cloning.

Something that's been on my mind lately, i saw this thread http://aurorastation.org/forums/posting.php?mode=quote&f=17&p=56586 and this post quite notably: I do notice in a lot of games, that engineering is often understaffed, and sometimes empty. People will crowd six players into security while the engine is still offline and theres no engineering staff. But why do people play engineer less? It's a deep, interesting and engaging department, at least gameplay wise. There's a lot of complexity, a lot to learn and do. So why do people avoid it? Why don't YOU play engineering more? I have a few ideas of my own, though these are just personal opinions: 1. Repetition. The process of setting up the supermatter is a bit of a pain, dragging canisters around. But its also one you have to do repeatedly, it must be done every shift or everyone dies. Its a burden engineering has to bear 2. Lack of interaction. It's an isolating job, you often mostly just see other engineers unless you need to visit medical, or go fix something somewhere. The broken vending machines thing seems like a nice idea to get engineers out of their department, but it's not severe enough to warrant calling them much of the time. Most of the time, you're dealing with inanimate machines that respond predictably, which kind of ties into point 1 3. Different mindset. Engineers are people of action. They have all the tools at their disposal to get anywhere and do anything, only bureaucracy stops them. I've seen engineers get shouted at for going into certain places without asking. they believe they have a god given right to go anywhere in order to fix stuff, and they don't like being stopped. I've never met an engineer who likes paperwork, or requesting permission for things. Most of the CE's i've met are pretty laid back, and will do whatever they feel appropriate without filling out station modification forms or any other such impediments. If you don't ask, you can't be refused. 4. Lack of respect. Kind of tying into other points. Engineering is out of the way, arcane and mysterious to most. Very few people ever go there unless they want to take equipment. People only call engineers when something's broken. And the whole overalls and hardhat image kind of ties in with notions about people of lower class. When a security officer brings down your assailant, or a surgeon repairs your lungs, you're both there after the fact, to express your gratitude. When an engineer saves your life, he's usually doing it on the other side of the station, and you might not even know about it. Very few show appreciation for their hard work Last time i played engineer, i got shouted at by a doctor for leaving a door open. But nobody thanked me for setting up the engine. It kind of leaves a bad taste in the mouth. What are your thoughts on the matter? If you're not a regular engineer player, why not? what turns you off about the department?
-
My thoughts: With only one head of staff, you can't call an ERT, otherwise that should be the first option. You mention breaking into offices and promoting people to get the extra IDs? Well hacking into places is engineering's job. You said there's no engineers. And when there's hostile intruders and/or traitors onboard, it's a job for engineering AND security. As far as i can tell the crew had neither. I don't see a way out of that situation without metagaming/powergaming, except to call the shuttle and leave. The fact that an engineer turned up is incidental, without an IC way to request personnel. You can't reasonably know or expect that will happen, and using your OOC knowledge that someone will probably join as engineer at some point, doesn't seem a reasonable reason to continue the round. The fact that only one person died, and that the breaches were contained, is probably OOC knowledge too. Generally only an engineering team and the AI will know much about the status of a breach, to everyone else it's a big scary mess of yellow doors and possibly-deadly rooms. From an IC perspective, a station without power and no engineering staff, is lost. A station under attack and without security staff, is lost. Both of these together seems like more than enough reason to call a shuttle. So for what it's worth, i think you made the wrong decision here

[Denied] LemonTheFruit IPC Application
Nanako replied to LemonTheFruit's topic in Whitelist Applications Archives
I feel like PAL OS never finishes a shift. Or maybe it's just too quiet and unnoticeable. The only times i remember its around usually, are when its being moved into cyborg/AI storage because there's a notification for that -
I responded to a medical call in science today, and found that archie was accused of sexual harassment and someone ended up banging his head against a window over it. Quite an odd start
-
Then it's settled. Shut down and bin the thread, loremeister has spoken and made a decision. Well i still think there is an issue here. Like i've said, i agree with phoron, it's good and it works. Plasma is an incorrect name. I'd like to see us settle on phoron fully, and remove all references to "plasma" in the strings and code

Reporting Personnel:Nanako Magojiro Rank of Reporting Personnel:Nurse Personnel Involved:Raieed Amari, Jack Sayek, Luca Eliza Time of Incident: (If unable to provide, leave blank) Real time: 0230 GMT, 2016-03-29 Location of Incident:Medical Nature of Incident: [x]Workplace Hazard [x]Accident/Injury []Destruction of Property [x]Neglect of Duty []Harassment []Assault [x]Misconduct []Other Overview of the Incident: (General description of the incident, to include as much detail as is deemed necessary) Dr Raieed Amari is a tajaran medical professional who often serves in exodus medbay. He serves in a wide variety of positions, including as Chief Medical Officer at one point. During this incident, he was serving as Chemist. During this shift, command staff were somewhat absent, we had only the captain and chief engineer. Throughout the shift, Dr Amari repeatedly displayed an unprofessional and lassiez-faire attitude. It started right at the beginning, when i made medicine requisitions for the shift. He became arrogant and seemed insulted that i'd asked for basic medicines, bicardine and dexalin plus, both in pill form. Though he did provide them, the dexalin was the wrong dosage. Shortly later, after the Chief Engineer was almost killed by raiders with energy weapons, i requested dermaline pills. This request was denied because he couldn't be bothered, too much effort. I offered to step in and make them myself to save him the trouble, if he'd allow me access. This request was denied. I had to treat several more burn cases with inadequate medicines. Throughout the shift, several important medicines ran low, and Dr Amari neglected his duty to keep an eye on them, or to make the more advanced things that we might need. At one point i had to go back to him and request more dexalin plus pills, and was given a different, but still wrong dosage. Despite having a significant compliment of doctors on staff, and an odysseus that i'm certified to operate, he repeatedly neglected his chemistry duties to rush out and play EMT to wounded personnel i was already assisting, sometimes just getting in the way. I made repeated requests, polite at first though gradually less so, that he focus on his own job, and that a good chemist was what we needed most. Nevertheless this interfering behaviour persisted. Later in the shift, after a radiation storm, Dr Amari was told repeatedly that we needed hyronalin to treat radiation symptoms. I personally needed it myself, as i found out the hard way that the Odysseus isn't radiation-shielded. Dr Amari repeatedly delayed requests to make radiation medicine, citing that he was tending to patients. Something which is once again, a doctor's work, and we had an ample staff of doctors. Eventually Dr Luca Eliza emerged from virology and took over chemistry to make the needed medicine For these three aspects, i cite neglect of duty, but that is the least significant thing in this report Sometime around the middle of the shift, the janitor came to the chemistry window and started asking for things. He didn't name any specific compounds, possibly due to a lack of knowledge, but it was abundantly clear to everyone present that he wanted narcotics for recreational usage. Instead of calling security or informing a head of staff, Dr Amari entertained these requests, and eventually gave him a pair of pills named "Raieed got bored "1 and 2. The janitor spent much of the shift staggering around, vomiting, and accumulating toxin damage, I didn't see much of it in person, but i did bump into him in medbay and watched him vomit all over the floor. Eventually we had to chase him down in the hallway and take him back to medical in the odysseus for treatment, he might have died from the overdose of various things he took. When questioned about it Dr Amari admitted to giving the janitor other things in addition to those two pills, and also admitted accidentally mixing a toxin into the narcotics he made. This case demonstrates both incompetence in the lab, and guilt of a contraband charge for distributing narcotics. It was around this time that Captain Jack Sayek picked up on chatter about the narcotics on the medical channel, apparently nobody had directly informed him up until that point. He threatened the chemist with demotion, to which Dr Amari replied various rude things that definitely should not be said to a commanding officer. The only one i specifically remember is that he said, over the common channel, "The captain is just swinging his big dick around". He also said, in response to a threat of being fired, that "it wouldn't be the first time" The captain was unable to process a demotion or any disciplinary measures, due to frequent raider attacks on the station, lack of personnel or security heads, and a very shorthanded security department. Which meant he spent much of his time in the shift doing battle personally. I have little doubt that Dr Amari would have been demoted if the captain had the time. Slandering a head of staff, general misconduct, and a very casual attitude to the rules of his profession. I believe Dr Amari's conduct is not befitting of any medical professional, and ESPECIALLY unbecoming of someone who often serves as Chief Medical Officer. He is not fit to be command staff in my opinion. Did you report it to a Head of Staff or IAA? If so, who?: Captain Jack Sayek Additional notes: In times i have served under Dr Amari as chief medical officer, i would judge his command ability poorly. He is frequently unresponsive, and gives confusing or conflicted orders. In one incident when the station was being bombed, i was ordered to EVA to pick up three voidsuits for the medical staff. I spent 10 minutes standing outside EVA waiting for him to authorise the AI to open the EVA doors, while he talked to other crew and ignored me. I eventually gave up and returned to medbay, only to be sent out to pick up EVA suits again sometime later. This was a waste of precious time in a crisis situation.

I can't stand the red flashing, i couldn't stand it even if it was solid red. The whole light overlay thing is a pain. We already have fire alarms that flash red, couldn't they just be made more visible to communicate the situation?

[DENIED] slc97's Moderator Application
Nanako replied to slc97's topic in Moderator Applications Archives
Jack Sayek is a pretty awesome captain, really down to earth, communicates with the crew a lot, and radiates an aura of authority. I really like him. He's also not afraid to drop into medical and help out in times of high casualties. +1 from me, he'dbe a good moderator i think -
afaik borgs can't drop their resources, they just produce and use them on demand, to build things
-
There's a whitelist of items which aren't destroyed when someone is moved to longterm storage, specifically for this reason it is. try playing medical on a long shift during visible time at peak hours. SSD Baldies everywhere, piling up like sandbags. 95% of them don't have anything valueable to be lost, either
-
If you have internet to talk to other players, you have internet to play. i fail to see the issue That is insane. Are you running on a toaster? A computer that takes 30 minutes to reboot is an abnormality, it's not reasonable to expect everyone else to accomodate your soviet-era hardware. The round is only two hours, generally. That's an absolute standard. If you're going to be out for a quarter of it because of a crash, the problem is on your end. Most cases i see of people going SSD, they're back within a couple of minutes, often under 30 seconds. i've never heard of anyone taking that long to get running again Mine is sometimes. It's long enough for everyone to get annoyed with their SSD body breaking immersion and wanting it gone. And considering that many jobs have limited slots (especially heads of staff, which have only one), you being SSD and squatting it can have a major impact on the round. So what if you come back as a ghost? Just respawn, RP that you went for a cryonap and just woke up No, we have cryo for that purpose. Crew transfers are for ending the round and playing a new mode. The people who are SSD don't care, they've closed the client and gone to do something else. Those who keep voting to continue the round clearly want to play. Also chemists, roboticists, warden, chaplain in cult rounds, cyborgs, and the AI., The latter two can't be cryo'd sadly, but these people being SSD significantly affects the round in a negative way It needs work, it has needed work for a while. And hopefully it will be worked on. I don't see why the poor state of a current feature should affect the addition of a new one, it just adds a prerequisite, and imo pathing needs to be worked on anyway, with or without a cryobot. Server admins have identified that janitor bots are causing insane amounts of lag. Skull seems to be working on it now, so i'd expect that to be sorted, and probably made better than before

Today an autoinjector of 5u chloral hydrate saved a colleague's life. it works, thanks everyone!
