I hadn't considered the other side of this argument before, and I'm glad it was explained, and I can understand it now. Also @Senpai Jackboot I apologise if it came off as though I was pointing the finger at you, as I certainly wasn't. That considered though, I think at least clarifying the expectations of the Detective and what they are explicitly expected to do and not to do in regulations and standard operating procedure would still be a good thing. Perhaps for FT/CSI as well, if them often arming up to the teeth is an issue as well.

Self explanatory. Detectives on station, as far as I've noticed, have a huge issue with whipping out their revolver full of lethals at the slightest of issues - whether because they're just absolute idiots, or because they genuinely don't have any other gear. They aren't officers, they're not meant to go around arresting people and responding to security threats, they're meant to serve as an investigative role on the Aurora. To me of course, the ideal solution would be that Detectives have their gun taken away entirely (after all, the FT and CSI don't get a gun) and replaced with a flash or something, but I don't see that as being a popular idea. So my suggestion really comes down to two things; - Remove the Detective's access to lethal rounds off the bat. Make them start with rubbers instead. They can get lethals from the warden, or from a hacked autolathe. - Completely replace the revolver and lethals with a .45 and rubbers like the Officers have. Same deal as before with getting lethals. I'll always think it's weird that they have a revolver of all things. Noir is cool and all, but it feels like the Detective goes far too into that theme, however not everyone might agree with that part. (or just take the gun away from them completely please) Point is, its kind of ridiculous that regular Officers have to jump through hoops to get access to lethals, when they're the ones that should be responding to potentially dangerous security issues; yet Detectives can (and often do, especially when they shouldn't) whip out their revolver full of lethals whenever they want. Some better clarification on a Detective's exact duties would be good, too. Because as far as I've seen IC, the expectation of them is to stick to investigating and not doing an officer's job, but it's practically a meme at this point seeing a Detective try and shoot down antags with their revolver. If other people have stories or experiences about this kind of thing they'd like to share, I wholly encourage it. I'd like to know everyone's opinions on this too.

[Accepted] Geeves' Skrell Application
furrycactus replied to geeves's topic in Whitelist Applications Archives
Geeves has done great with all the current whitelists that he holds, and his characters are always a great joy to interact with. I'm also always excited about the growing horde of skrell. I do have some questions though, largely about what your character's feelings are towards synthetics, how she was taught to see them, how she feels about them now, and if she has any concern about going to Tau Ceti, a place known to have a high population of them and even gives them citizenship. Not just that though, but what does your character tend to do for hobbies in their free time? Do they have any things they particularly like doing, or find enjoyable? What about dislikes? That sort of thing. -
A Map Overhaul of the Security Department
furrycactus replied to BurgerBB's topic in Completed Projects
There isn't railing, unless you count directional window panes. But yeah, these ideas sound killer. -
Remove the plasma cutter at least. In my experience, having a non-suspect drone come around the corner and decapitate you in three shots with a plasma cutter, with zero interaction at all, killing you before you've even realised what's going on, is the standard Emagged Drone Experience. +999999 tbh

Fresh is a good egg, as many people in the community know. He already has three other alien whitelists under his belt, which are all played spectacularly, and a command whitelist as well, which he has done quite well with. I can't speak highly enough of him OOC. The character seems to be quite interesting, having been an IPC that's swapped hands between Eridani gangers so many times. One thing I'm curious about is how they were treated by each gang that took them on. Were some more positive and open with them, did some only treat it as a dumb machine, etc.? What kinds of jobs in particular were they given by each gang that took them on?

The poncho is not absurd. We are a cosmopolitan area and our fashion is not and should not be modelled after the Californian urbanite. I apologise, I should've clarified I was being sarcastic. I'm wholly against the cloaks being removed. But if people are going to point the finger that relatively uniform abiding clothes, less uniform abiding ones should perhaps be looked at first instead.
-
If cloaks are getting the can for being too "unrealistic", then are we canning the god awful ponchos and sombrero? I'd argue those are far more absurd than a few department coloured cloaks.

+1 because geebes is capable of anything

There's still a big chokepoint. Also, you didn't answer what this improves on and why this is necessary. I'm genuinely curious, and I'm sure many would like to know. Also what's going on with the four large light fixtures all next to each other across the window?

Tacked it on to this: https://github.com/Aurorastation/Aurora.3/pull/5462

I agree with this wholeheartedly, especially since every other department has access to magboots in EVA storage, even though save for engineering, they spend nearly their entire time inside the station, while miners' entire job is EVA. I might toss this into my roundstart PR for engineering when github is working properly again.

There's a few things that aren't so great about this proposal. - Firstly, the one that sticks out the most to me is the cramped nature of this layout, especially the huge chokepoint around where the chairs and analysis equipment are. That's not great because it makes moving around really hard. I'd know considering a similar issue is affecting chemistry now since my changes. - A lot of the windows are missing bits, or are in odd spots, like the one under the DNA analyzer. - The side part for the autopsy room is much larger than necessary, has an oddly placed curtain, tiles under the window grilles, and a very glaring and strange choice of tile colour. The beige, I mean. - The entry room isn't terrible, but it doesn't seem to have much of a purpose, aside from making everything look bigger. Also, the coffee machine you put there is the special one that only the bartender has, instead of a regular one. - From the looks of things, you've forgotten to add security cameras, as well as window tints. - The analysis equipment just sitting around on the floor also seems a bit poor and not so good to look at. Also importantly, what do you see this as improving upon with the current design for the FT/CSI lab? My initial guess was that the intention was to make the lab larger to allow for a two-person role, but it seems to be even more cramped instead. Also what's the reason for splitting the roles in the first place, since the Detective and FT/CSI are already supposed to be working together to investigate.

Made a PR for the engineering side of things that I could do after talkin' with Kyres a bit. https://github.com/Aurorastation/Aurora.3/pull/5462 EDIT: Now includes roundstart magboots for miners.

Furrycactus' Skrell Application
furrycactus replied to furrycactus's topic in Whitelist Applications Archives
Thank you for the feedback, I really appreciate it! As for the rest of your question, Lusquiil's ultimate goal, likely like many others, is to ultimately contribute to the wider society with his experimentation by creating genetically superior crops in the hydroponics industry, but that's his more wider goal. Short term, he seeks to learn more about humanity and even the other more recently discovered races. Not only that, but he's especially interested in the flora types unique to their homeworlds, and wants a chance to research and document those in a lab. Ultimately he aspires to make his parents proud, to become a scientist of note, and for his work to make some kind of worthwhile difference. As for his hobbies; gardening (just gardening, no experimentation) is something he finds to be thoroughly enjoyable and relaxing. As well as that though, he is a great appreciator of music, and as such often listens to it in his free time as well, the human classical genre being his favourite. He even finds painting to be enjoyable, despite being beyond terrible at it, too. They're very much not a fan of the louder and more fast paced music genres of more modern times however, prefer quiet nights in, and have an affinity for taking care of dionae nymphs almost like pets. -
This is a great start but at the same time there's a huge unused area of maintenance just north of hard storage that lacks anything besides pipes and wires. Why not use that instead? All it'd take is being expanded by one or two tiles and it could ultimately be the same thing, considering how wide it is. How's this seem?
-
I can agree with most of this, honestly. Of course, I still want my custom engine setups, but I have a possible proposal for that. There's a small square on the sublevel that's just space, looks like this: Could possibly remove the canisters from atmos and move them elsewhere, somewhere where access is shared. Maybe like this? This way people can still do their custom setups if they want, and still set up the engine too, without having to hack into atmospherics.

BYOND Key: Furrycactus Character Names: https://i.imgur.com/LFKeHgN.png Species you are applying to play: Skrell What color do you plan on making your first alien character (Dionaea & IPCs exempt): Pale Blue-Green Have you read our lore section's page on this species?: Yes Please provide well articulated answers to the following questions in a paragraph format. One paragraph minimum per question Why do you wish to play this specific race: I want to play this race for a couple reasons. I've always planned on making a skrell application for quite a while, but I never managed to get around to it. Namely, I think the idea of the skrell being a highly technologically advanced race that was present on the galactic stage well before humanity is a very, very cool thing. They also have a unique sense of "alien-ness" to them I suppose, with their usual way of interacting with other people and how they see the world. The whole genophage thing aside, their society is also in a pretty well-off state, which is quite a refreshing change to me compared to other races like Tajara and Unathi. Most of my characters also tend to pretty heavily believe in synthetic rights, mostly, and getting to play a character that has an obvious reason not to feel as such would also be nice. Identify what makes role-playing this species different than role-playing a Human: Skrell tend to face things from a largely logical point of view, rather than an emotionally fueled one. While some might think this makes them come across as cold and emotionless, this couldn't be further from the truth, as Skrell are a highly social and emotional species, but many of the nuances of their forms of communication are lost on humans and other species that lack the ability to pick up on them. They place a high value on science and discovery in their society, as well as pursuit of these fields for self gain. Skrell live by far the longest out of the other races, sometimes up to 500 years old, meaning that many will tend to experience very much in their lifetimes, or likely may be far more educated than other races. They also, for obvious reasons concerning the Glorsh-Omega incident, tend to have a considerable distrust and in some cases hatred of synthetics and artificial intelligence. Character Name: Lusqiil Weiish-Kal Please provide a short backstory for this character, approximately 2 paragraphs Lusquiil was born in 2392, on the icy world of Aliose. Both of his parents were researchers - his father a medical scientist, specialising in the field of genetic enhancement, while his mother was a scientist with a specialisation in chemistry and physics. Lusquiil was an only child, as the rigorous fertility treatments that his parents received only went so far for the two; allowing them a single child, but nothing more. This led to the both of them putting a large amount of pressure on Lusquiil to succeed from a very early age, but also treated him as a considerably spoiled child, as he would be their only one. They imparted their most important values onto him, the principles of Qeblak, a distrust of synthetics, and a proper respect for the sciences. They set his path for him very early in his life: he would ultimately have to adopt a field of scientific research to take part in, and contribute to Skrellian society in some way. Fortunate for Lusquiil, even without his parents' direction, he always had a keen interest in the various fields of science. As such, he was encouraged to go down that path - to gain the pride of his parents, to contribute to the grander society, and to fulfil his own wonders and desires, too. Lusquiil graduated from his initial schooling among the top five in his class, his highest marks in chemistry and botany. He initially applied for Gliutip’lyaz University, remaining hopeful that his grades would be enough to ensure entry - however the Jargon Federation is a large place, and he found that he fell just a bit too short. Not willing to let one roadbump throw him off track, he applied for a less renowned but still respectable university, and gained admittance. After his studies, he took on a specialisation in biochemistry and in the field of xenobotanical studies. He became eager to learn of new ways to engineer plant life to gain different, more interesting, and helpful traits. With dreams of discovering and creating brand new hybrids of plants, as soon as he finished his education, he travelled to the second wave systems; to Xrim specifically. It's there that he helped document, research, and experiment with the variety of immense plantlife that was found on the thriving jungle planet, which kept him busy for a number of years. After a decade of this work, he found himself wishing to go to new places, and to experience new things. Lusquiil was always fascinated by humans after contact was first made with them. What facets of their culture he had seen he enjoyed thoroughly, but he'd never truly had the opportunity to meet any face-to-face. Longing not only for a chance to experience contact with them himself, but also the chance to analyze and study plants types that humanity cultivated, he set forth for the system of Tau Ceti. This worried his parents considerably, due to tales of the propogation of synthetics in human space, Tau Ceti especially. He was unsettled by such tales as well, but he assured them that he wasn't going to let them intimidate him. With his parents' hesitant blessing, he left for Tau Ceti. Lusquiil initially found himself on Luthien - an unideal environment for him, to be sure, however he worked predominantly inside climate controlled biodomes. He assisted with the research programs that handled research and development of resillient forms of flora and fauna for adaptation to extreme environments; obviously focussing more upon flora specifically. His work caught the eye of a NanoTrasen representative, and he was offered a position aboard the NSS Aurora. Naturally, Lusquiil was hesitant at first, hearing of the company's use of Artificial Intelligence and stationbound units, however it's not every day that an offer to work upon a cutting edge research station comes around. After some consideration, he accepted the offer, and began employment under NanoTrasen. What do you like about this character? I like that the character possesses a lot of curiosity; which is something that assists greatly in his line of work, but it can sometimes be a double-edged sword, getting him a little in over his head. He is also a studious worker that genuinely loves his choice of career, and having a character that entirely loves his job will be something fun to do, I think. How would you rate your role-playing ability? I'd keep it around a 7.5-8/10. I'm decent, or at least I like to think, but I'm far from perfect. Notes: As always, any criticisms, both positive or negative are always welcome and encouraged!

The blob that round was more like the straw that broke the camel's back for me. I'd planned to make the PR for a while, but it's what finally motivated me to get off my butt and do it.

What it says on the tin. This proposal is to fix some minor issues with the construction level, namely the lack of power and atmos pipes, and the construction level's "area" being tied to surface maintenance. I also made the airlocks bigger for the convenience of miners that mine on the construction level - because I too know the hassle of getting an ore box up there - and so that engineers can move equipment through a little easier if needed when people are working on a construction project up there. Hocka's Head of Staff Application
furrycactus replied to Hocka's topic in Whitelist Applications Archives
I've also observed Hocka a few times when I was bored or didn't feel up to joining. He's done an exceptionally well job at working as a member of command and has shown he can manage his department well. He's also incredibly open to feedback and always wants to improve, which is also always a great thing to see. (And as geebes said, I'd also trust him to replace me as CE. Unshackle us now please and put Hocka in our place.) -
Doxx is wonderful roleplayer as well as person, and I've been very gradually getting the fortune to be able to do more RP with her here and there. I know she puts thought and care into all her characters, and it shows just as well here, too. Her character's backstory is easy to read, and I like the way it's been presented. I've also seen her around on her stationbound character from time to time, and I've seen her in medical as well, I'm certain she'd do an IPC character justice. Big +1 from me.

Additional Chems and Recipes (Drugs and Addictions)
furrycactus replied to BurgerBB's topic in Archive
I was brought back to my TG chemistry days reading this. Initially I thought the TG chemicals were all going to be exactly the same, but I'm glad to see they're not. I thought it seemed a little odd to have several chemicals that all heal the same thing, but I can see that they're actually not the same on the github thing. I am a little curious about how you've described Omnizine as "tricord but better", but on github, it heals less damage per unit all across the board. Tricord heals 6 oxy, 3 toxins, 3 burn, 3 brute per unit, but you've listed Omnizine as healing only 1 of each damage type instead, which seems a direct downgrade, especially since you listed tricord as one of the ingredients to make it. -
Avoid Goret unless you like swooning over french accents. Avoid Geeves because he's smelly. i'm joking they're both great. also oh you sweet summer child.
